Title: Favouritism Poll #6 - Spin-Off Score Tracks
Post by: Decar on April 26, 2016, 11:16:14 AM
We're continuing our Favouritism Polls by asking you:

What's favourite Carcassonne Spin-Off Score Track?

And because there are so many, this week you have 2 votes!

Do you like the regiment of 'New Lands' or the ingenuity of 'The Castle'?
Or do you prefer the flow of 'Over Hills and Dales' or the artwork of Cardcassonne?
I've included it, but I hope no one votes for 'The Dice Game', given it's a sheet of paper.

Here are some images to remind yourself of the options:

Let us know your thoughts or remind me of the Spin-Off I missed - I wasn't going to include Cardcassonne because it was so different but the artwork is brilliant!

Remember we're asking you about your favourite score-track here not your favourite spin-off.

Wow, I've literally never seen the Cardcassonne score track (or any other component of Cardcassonne), it looks cool! So I voted for that and for the Castle, because the Castle score track is unique in the Carcassonne universe and it's so great how it's integrated into the game. Plus, who doesn't like castle ramparts?

I chose Mayflower / A New World. The squares makes it easier to find the right number and follow its progression.

I really like the scoring mechanism in South Seas. By making the collection of ships the aim of the game it gives you a good incentive to go for every type of feature, which isn't always the case in other Carcassonne variants.

It was not easy this time.

The first scoreboard I've voted was "Over Hill and Dale" and than it was not easy to decide.
The 2nd was than "Goldrush".

But I also like the scoreboards from "Hunters & Gatherers" and the "Winter-Edition".

I have voted for cardcassonne and hunters and gatherers. I'm most familiar with both of these which probably has something to do with my choice, but I really love the H&G artwork in general, and the scoreboard matches it really well.

As for Cardcassonne, I've only played it a couple of times but having the score track going alongside the rows of cards is a nice reminder of how everyone is doing when you're taking your turn. Plus I like the little meeples that you use for the score track as well!

I definitely like New World (not "New Lands") and The Castle boards the best, mostly because they both play a role in the game itself (like the base Carcassonne scoreboard probably should). I created an overlay for the New World board that works for base Carcassonne for my "Reconquest of Gaul" fan-expansion a few years ago.

The New World board doubles as the starting board and also somewhat confines the bounds of gameplay once the Surveyors enter play. Even though I am not a huge fan of the photo-realistic (and difficult to see) art of that game, the start board is beautifully executed and a great idea. Players are encouraged to continue heading in one direction as they place tiles, and the board acts as the eastern seaboard of the United States.

Equally, I like The Castle's board because of the role it plays in scoring and keeping the game tight. I mean, they even had to expand this board with The Falcon expansion because it was too tight, but that's exactly what I expect of this game. The Castle is one of my favourite spin-offs, and the scoreboard is definitely a factor that makes it so.

I don't own any spin-offs, so I haven't seen lots of these before!

I have voted for Over Hill and Dales, because I really like the art on the scoreboard. The people getting up to various things around it are a nice touch.

My second vote should have been Goldrush, because I think the colours and the figures are brilliant. However, I wanted be to facetious so I voted for the Dice Game! I love pen and paper games, so I'm a big fan of any game that dispenses with a scoreboard and makes you improvise!

I would also have considered voting for the Winter Edition, because I like the theme, but I voted for that in the previous score track poll (and got in trouble :P)

Why would I want anything other than the basic score track? At most I might want to put it onto a spreadsheet. I can't see my votes there.

Haha, you didn't get into trouble; it's just that the Winter Edition was waiting to be added here ;)  The Winter Edition is a weird Spin-Off it's not really a spin-off at all; but it's not base either.  It's really just new artwork I suppose.  On the plus side - it meant you could vote for two things now. :)

Votes are looking great, so far. I decided to vote for the The Castle and South Seas. I think these change the game the most and are both used as part of the mechanic rather than something put to the side of the game!

I never played Cardcassonne, but the scoreboard looks really nice, so I voted for that. Second vote got South Sea, I like the art very much, but my decision was more biased by the fact, that it is a really nice and unique scoring mechanism in the "Carcassonne Universe".

I voted for The Castle, by the same reason as whaleyland: I like that scoring track is well used in the game; and for Over Hills and Dales, because I also like the art on that scoreboard.

The vote is really split here, The Castle is just ahead but only 18 votes have been cast. That's only 9 people.

Hopefully a few more people will be able to share their favourite spinoff scoretrack over the weekend!

A disappointing result for this poll; never the less we'll continue.  This week we'll ask you:

What's your favourite Big Box? (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=2703.0)

Many thanks to everyone who's taken part.
