Title: Carcassonne Central: Advent Quiz MMXVIII
Post by: danisthirty on November 29, 2018, 04:31:40 AM
I’m not normally someone who says "Yikes", but December is now just two days away. Yikes! :o

One of my favourite December traditions is the Carcassonne Central Advent Quiz which is now in its fourth year (2015 (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=2186.msg30812#msg30812), 2016 (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=2970.msg44409#msg44409), 2017 (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=3632.msg53830#msg53830), 2018 (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=4145.msg60902#msg60902))! It’s a great opportunity to review what’s happened over the course of the year within our little community, and to test your knowledge of who said what (or at least your ability to use the Search feature anyway).

My hope is that it will be more fun than opening a new window on your advent calendar each day anyway (although probably not as tasty as eating the little chocolate that was behind it)...

Here’s a quick recap/ update of the rules for anyone who hasn’t taken part in one of our previous quizzes:

- Between the 1st and 24th December I will post a single question each day (at a random time), to which the answer will be the name of a member of our community here at CarcC. Going on previous experience, it seems likely that most questions will be fairly easy for most people to answer (I'm the one posing them after all :P), but I won't ever ask anything that a quick and/ or cunning search of the forums won't reveal.

- When you know the answer, don't post it on this thread! :-X Because then everyone will know, and we don't want that. Instead, send me a PM including the question number and your answer for that day. I won't respond to your PM (please don't be offended), but if you get the answer correct you will win one or more quiz points depending on how many others have answered it correctly before you: 3 points for the first person to provide a correct answer, 2 points to the second and 1 point for anyone else who answers correctly. C:-)

Based on feedback from last year I am extending the range of points on offer this year as follows:

1st correct answer5 points
2nd correct answer4 points
3rd correct answer3 points
4th correct answer2 points
All subsequent correct answers   1 point

- There's no cut-off date for any particular questions so don't despair if you miss any. You can even answer all 24 questions on Christmas eve if you want, but don't expect to score big overall...

- Once Christmas and boxing day are behind us, I will post the correct answers – one at a time – along with who won the big points (or indeed any points) and total scores per participant. This is where it gets really fun! :o :(y)

- The overall winner will be the person with the most points at the end of the quiz, but there is likely to be a small prize for everyone who answers all questions regardless of whether they manage to answer any of them correctly. Last year I gave away something very special indeed, and I'm hoping to think of something even more specialer between now and the end of the quiz. But obviously it will be a surprise. O:-)

Since I still haven't posted the prizes from last year I don't want to get myself even further into debt here, so this year will be for fun and bragging rights only.

Any questions, please ask now. Otherwise, you can expect question 1 of 24 sometime on Saturday! O0

Many among those of us who play Carcassonne via the iOS app made a new friend in January. But who was it that first told us about "Frank", and how to unlock him?

Although the first couple of prototype sets were available to look at in 2016, it wasn't until this year that the exclusive, limited-edition Carcassonne book-boxes were available through the Cundco store. The hefty price tag proved somewhat prohibitive for many of us, but who was the first forum member proud enough to show one of these beauties off via the photos he posted of his own set in November?

We first heard about a new expansion - the Fruit Bearing Trees - back in March and spent a while discussing the various pros and cons of its release amongst other things (such as Cundco's spare parts service and Decar's Uncle's 80 pots of Quince Jam). One eagle-eyed forum member however spotted two of Monty Python's Knights who say "Ni" hiding in a bush on one of the tiles. Who was this?

Q15:
In September I proposed the idea of a collaborative game of Carcassonne where we as a community played a game from the position of one single player against three AI opponents. Thus providing opportunities to share our thoughts, strategies and insights between us as part of the ensuing discussion that evolved as the game progressed. Whilst the idea didn't take off as well as I'd hoped it might, the game is still in play on my iPad so we might come back to it in the new year and pick up where we left off. Anyway, it's not something I would normally have considered, but who was the first to suggest getting an early farmer down once the game was underway?

The UK Carcassonne championships were held in June this year. Despite ranking 17th after the first three rounds of competition, I qualified for the knockout stage as the lowest-seeded player before progressing as far as the semi-final where I was knocked out by another member of Carcassonne Central: JackFace! However, I wasn't the only CarcC member who Jack sent home without a trophy. Who was the other?

Although it's been a quiet year for online tournaments, TheAwesomeTheSteveAllen has worked hard establishing our all-new Carcassonne Central Divisional League system which is already proving popular among those players who have been able to schedule any matches ::). In the premiership meanwhile, at least one player was keen to get some practice games in after making a startling revelation that he's only ever played three games of Carcassonne; all three resulting in victories over yours truly! I haven't mentioned it so far, but it would be remiss of me not to mention one of this year's major highlights for Carcassonne fans around the world... the International Fan Meeting held in Saxony in July! For those of us who couldn't make it, Decar wrote an excellent photo-filled account of the week which covered all games played as well as all the extra activities/ excursions. Among MANY other games, Decar mentions that he enjoyed a game of Go against someone who "absolutely mashed" him. Who was this?

Q21:
One of the nice things about being a global community is, by definition, that we have members all around the world. And there's no better way to be reminded of this than when people post about their meetups with fellow members of CarcC. With this in mind, who sought out the Chilean national champion (and world number #16) in September during a year-long tour of South America with his girlfriend, for a game or two of Carcassonne?

PS - Sorry for the lateness of this one! I thought I'd posted it earlier but didn't realise it hadn't gone until I came back to check my messages and found no responses!

Back in February, The Steve suggested that it might be a good idea for some of us to assist farin (author of JCloisterZone) by forming a squad of elite testers to playtest the interactions between the numerous expansions and to ensure that they behave as intended: "The Defenders of the Cloisterzone". Q23:
It's been a little while now since our Complete Annotated Rules document was last updated, and as such it's beginning to show it's age in terms of the growing list of expansions it doesn't mention. However, a small but dedicated team of Carcassonne rules gurus led by the almost competent Maj. Frost ;) was established in September and their progress on the brand new WikiCarpedia (http://wikicarpedia.com/index.php/Main_Page) has been incredible (so be sure to check it out if you haven't already)! They're always glad of any assistance from anyone who wishes to help, but which WikiCarpedia volunteer admitted that the existing CAR had been their bedtime reading over the summer?

Q24:
I didn't do a "spare bits giveaway" this year as I haven't got much in the way of spare bits left after 3 years of giving them all away! I did however give away a selection of tiles for both artwork editions that had been signed by Carcassonne's designer: Klaus-Jürgen Wrede 8). All of the tiles were claimed, but one lucky CarcC member was able to claim a signed river tile through this giveaway even though I didn't have one to give away to begin with! Who was this?

If you think you know who this was, please PM me with the answer - don't answer here!

This is the final question of the advent quiz! Thanks so much for taking part; I hope you've all enjoyed listening out for the questions and searching through the years activity to find the answers. I've got a couple of days off now, but intend to start posting the answers from the 27th Dec which should hopefully be enough time to go through them all with a question-by-question scores update before 2019 dawns on us, so stay tuned for that...

I wish you all a happy and peaceful Christmas and new year, and thanks for everything that everyone here has contributed throughout 2018.

Much love and respect,
Dan :blue-meeple: :(y)

I will admit that I was being a little bit sarcastic with this one as the forum member in question wasn't technically offering a golden meeple to a childrens football coach. He did bring up the topic of children's football coaches in the same thread though, so I hoped that I'd given you just enough information to discern that I was referring to LaplazadeCarcassonne (link) (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=4093.msg60055#msg60055) for this question...

I had to double-check this when I re-discovered that this great day of boardgaming was earlier this year as it already feels like such a long time ago with all that snow, losing at almost every game, Decar conning Rich_The_Fish out of letting me win at Carcassonne, and then being made to wait for my small plate of biscuits as my blood sugar rapidly sank to new lows. Still, spending the day in the company of some great friends, and jungleboy, was very special indeed and I'm hopeful that we'll be able to repeat it all again soon. Although I might bring my own biscuits next time.

Anyway. Who won at Imhotep? It certainly wasn't me. It was: Rich_The_Fish (link) (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=3870.msg57262#msg57262)...

And a very insightful discussion it was too!

There were a lot of things I could have picked out from this thread. Another comment which stood out was from MrNumbers and is repeated below as it's something I remind myself of when it feels like things aren't going my way during games of Carcassonne:

I would save my diploma for 6th place in Carcassonne World championship'2016. It is very special to me and will always remind me that you should concentrate on a game till the very end.

Few of us have any diplomas/ certificates from any world championships though, so who was happy to settle on a signed British Moustaches tile as his favourite item? The answer I was looking for was: Squiffything (link) (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=4072.msg59840#msg59840) ...

This shouldn't have been too taxing for most people and there were a couple of ways of finding out if you didn't instinctively know who CarcC's top Hungarian player is. I know him well as he's one of my top-5 most feared opponents, but I always enjoy a game with him as we've had some fantastic clashes in the past. Who am I talking about? Why, it's Leven (link) (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=3999.msg60008#msg60008) of course...

We're a quarter of the way through the answers now and it appears that Piet Agoras is absolutely smashing it! I can't say I've noticed any unmarked vans parked outside my house or people following me around and peeping over my shoulder whenever I go anywhere near my laptop, but some of those response times are almost as impressive as they are disturbing! He leads Decar (winner of all previous advent quizes {I think?}) by 4 points and the rest of the field are lagging by at least twice as much again :o. But with the new scoring system it takes nothing more than a badly-timed mishap to change all that, and it's early days yet so stay tuned to see how things pan out...

Q7:
Although the first couple of prototype sets were available to look at in 2016, it wasn't until this year that the exclusive, limited-edition Carcassonne book-boxes were available through the Cundco store. The hefty price tag proved somewhat prohibitive for many of us, but who was the first forum member proud enough to show one of these beauties off via the photos he posted of his own set in November?

He may not have been the first to have bought one of these, but he was the first to announce that he'd done so on the forums and shared some fantastic photos of his special set in the process. Congratulations on your purchase Maj. Frost (link) (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=3969.msg60621#msg60621)!

After experiencing some lengthy delays, the final game of the 2017 World Cup of Carcassonne Central was completed in May this year. Dan "the magnificent" isthirty was defeated by 224 points against 206, but who was the eventual winner of this 163-tile, 7-expansion epic clash?

Back in October, in an act of extraordinary self-sacrifice and generosity, one of our humble forum members was kind enough to offer us for sale a set of FOUR Carcassonne tiles AND a coaster for a mere 125 Euros. Who was this?

I cranked the sarcasm up to 11 for this one as everyone knows by now how I feel about sales such as these taking place on the forums. There will be news of this in the new year, but for the time being I think it was fairly obvious that the person in question here was Push (link) (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=4100.msg60206#msg60206)... >:(

Who made a big announcement on the forums in October, by posting an image of two phantom cases and a red meeple standing on a Carcassonne landscape?

And the dog. Don't forget the dog! There's definitely a dog in that photo, although I wasn't quite sure what it was supposed to be when I first saw it and assumed it to be a pile of sticks. That said, subtlety is often wasted on me and I completely missed the whole purpose of this image until I saw some of the follow-up comments congratulating Decar (and of course Mrs Decar) on their exciting news! Who was this?

wolnic mentioned that there was a Monty Python question in the 2017 Advent Quiz too. I'd completely forgotten about that one, but the answer to both AQ 2017: Q23 (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=3632.msg55432#msg55432) and this question was the same: thodekey! With 2574 replies and over 490 thousand views, our "I love the postman" thread is still going strong after more than four years! Back in August, one forum member in particular was especially pleased to see his postman after he won a prize draw at a boardgame event and had four games including 13 Clues, Flagdash, Jorvik and Legendary Inventors delivered to him. Who was this?

Although I'd never heard of most of these games, it would have been nice to have had some new titles to go on my shelf of shame. Fortunately however, these games went to a much more deserving home and are now proudly owned by none other than... B1nder! Which forum member expressed their excitement at the prospect of attending the Carcassonne "Scottish Championships" in September, but then fell at the first hurdle when they realised they would be in Spain at the time of the competition?

We didn't hear much about the Scottish Championships (of Carcassonne) as TabletopScot doesn't appear to have stuck around to tell us all about how his convention went. With any luck it'll be on again next year though, so be sure to look out for it in early September (presumably?) and try not to be in Spain at that time.

This question concluded our inadvertent tour of Scotland with a quick visit to the Collaborative Carcassonne thread. Personally I'm not usually a fan of placing early farmers regardless of how many players there are, but apparently I'm in the minority with regards to this key area. Nobody struggled to find the answer to this one; congratulations wolnic! (link) (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=4084.msg59965#msg59965)

Q16:
The UK Carcassonne championships were held in June this year. Despite ranking 17th after the first three rounds of competition, I qualified for the knockout stage as the lowest-seeded player before progressing as far as the semi-final where I was knocked out by another member of Carcassonne Central: JackFace! However, I wasn't the only CarcC member who Jack sent home without a trophy. Who was the other?

I hadn't intended this question to be as tricky as it turned out to be, as there was an obvious answer to it posted clearly on the forums. But I guess that was only obvious to those of you who had actually seen it, and the searching process for those of you who hadn't seen it proved trickier than usual. Q17:
Although it's been a quiet year for online tournaments, TheAwesomeTheSteveAllen has worked hard establishing our all-new Carcassonne Central Divisional League system which is already proving popular among those players who have been able to schedule any matches ::). In the premiership meanwhile, at least one player was keen to get some practice games in after making a startling revelation that he's only ever played three games of Carcassonne; all three resulting in victories over yours truly! Who was this?

This claim was contradicted by some pretty convincing evidence such as screenshots and photographs of the person in question actually playing Carcassonne against other people who weren't me, and even in some rare cases where he was playing against me but I won! This could all be #fakenews of course, but I'm inclined to believe that jungleboy was merely having a senior moment! The Secret Santa hasn't worked out as well this year as it did last year, but seeing all the wonderful gifts that were made and given in 2017 meant it would be a shame not to at least try to repeat last year's success again this year. Piet Agoras may have lost his grip of first place to dronedrone, but is still within striking distance if he can utilise his blistering speed for just 2 or 3 more questions. Meanwhile, Decar and Meepledrone are still within spitting distance of the title too. Anything can, and probably will, happen over the course of the final 6 questions of the quiz so stay tuned for the final installment due new year's eve... :(y)

Q19:
I haven't mentioned it so far, but it would be remiss of me not to mention one of this year's major highlights for Carcassonne fans around the world... the International Fan Meeting held in Saxony in July! For those of us who couldn't make it, Decar wrote an excellent photo-filled account of the week which covered all games played as well as all the extra activities/ excursions. Among MANY other games, Decar mentions that he enjoyed a game of Go against someone who "absolutely mashed" him. Who was this?

Scroll scroll scroll and scroll some more. Nearly there. A bit further. Is that it? No, not quite, a bit more. Next one. There it is! This was probably one of the longest posts of the year from anyone, but that's to be expected considering what he was writing about and all the many wonderful activities and events Decar had to describe in his account of the 1st international fan meeting. It may have been a bit tricky to find, but I did quote him where he said that he'd been "absolutely mashed" so hopefully this would have been enough to help anyone who didn't already know that the answer to this question was: PresetM (link) (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=3741.msg58950#msg58950)...

The year isn't over yet, but 2018 has been one of our lowest in terms of new membership. :( This said, our average hasn't dipped below 2 new members per day yet and we've certainly got quality over quantity anyway! :(y) One of our "new for 2018" members introduced himself in August. He discovered Carcassonne for the first time eight months previously and hadn't obsessed this much about a game for 30 years! Who was this?

No advent quiz would be complete without a quick visit to the Meet the Members forum as it's always nice to be reminded that the community is growing even if we don't often hear very much from some of the newer members.

I tried to complicate this slightly by not mentioning Xanderx12 by name, but despite this it would have been obvious (if you looked in either of the places that gave this away) that the correct answer to this question was JoeSesquipedalian (link) (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=3784.msg59595#msg59595)...

Back in February, The Steve suggested that it might be a good idea for some of us to assist farin (author of JCloisterZone) by forming a squad of elite testers to playtest the interactions between the numerous expansions and to ensure that they behave as intended: "The Defenders of the Cloisterzone". Who came up with this name?

While it's true that The Defenders of the Cloisterzone haven't seen a lot of action so far, I do feel that any potential bugs that may otherwise have crept into JCloisterZone since our formation have been kept at bay mostly through fear of how quickly they'd be identified and brought to farin's attention through this elite force, and that's mostly because of our cool name.

I think it would take me many, many nights to get through the existing version of the printed CAR as a book for bedtime. I'm sure parts of it could really help me to sleep, but some of the less consistent rules clarifications would cause outrage and subsequent rampages that would make it hard to sleep at all! And imagine the nightmares. Dreaming of being a tiny wooden person being pursued by a wooden dragon?! No thanks! Good luck to you Meepledrone

There were a couple of posts on the thread which all added to this as the plan was forming, but it eventually came to pass that I would send one of my signed new-art tiles to Halfling and he would send an old-art river tile to... Many thanks Dan, that was a close run battle for top place this year.  Well done dronedrone for a thoroughly tough contest.  Based on your response speeds, I'd love to know what your technique was!  I only came close to your fastest response time once and that was because I hit refresh on the 'unread posts' page a moment before going to lunch.  Based on your times at the start of the contest, I feared I was out of the running, simply because I was too slow with other commitments (like having a job!) @Decar: I think you may be confusing dronedrone with Piet Agoras as it was actually him who posted several of the fastest response times (including more than one sub-minute response! :o). While Piet Agoras faded a bit in the second half of the competition, dronedrone's consistency is what enabled him to generate so many points even if his individual responses weren't always as quick.

But it seems you had a couple of days where you had similar and I was on holiday.

@Decar: I think you may be confusing dronedrone with Piet Agoras as it was actually him who posted several of the fastest response times (including more than one sub-minute response! :o). While Piet Agoras faded a bit in the second half of the competition, dronedrone's consistency is what enabled him to generate so many points even if his individual responses weren't always as quick.

Oh dear! Let's hope that isn't a question in next year's quiz, I'll get two members confused :(

So Piet, how were you so blooming fast!?!

By being in the office when Dan posts his questions :)

(Having a seperate Chrome-window with 3 tabs open helps also. One with this thread, one with the search page ready, one with a DM ready with subject and receipient already filled in. As soon as I see the mail coming in, I go to the first tab, hit refresh, read the question, go to the second tab, fill in the keyword, hit search, scan trough results, open third tab, fill in answer, hit send. )

Second half of the quiz, I was working on location and there I couldn't answer immediatly.

Also, thank you Dan for organising this challenge. I participated in 2017, and i was really keen on participating again in 2018. I really enjoyed the rush to get in the answers as quickly as possible :)
