This weekend will be my last weekend at home for the next month (although I usually take my laptop with me while I'm away). So it would be great to organise matches with the North American players - Carcking, rfielder and monwil - this weekend if they're available. I can always play the European-based players during the week because we're all in the same timezone.

Thanks for replying! It might have to be Sunday, because your evening is very late at night for me. So the best chance is probably afternoon for you or monwil / evening for me. Or even Sunday morning for you / afternoon for me.

I can do Sunday morning or afternoon.

Will check with monwil.  She may be able to do Sunday morning, as long as the game ends by 1030hrs EST.

From what I have read, it seems that using the Online option with JCZ 3.1.0 can be problematical.  Do you have a server?  Last time I tried to use mine, nobody could link in.

I may be able to host for you if you let me know what time you settle on. But it may be worth trying again on your server rfielder as I'm sure it has been workable in the past. Is it running the right version of JCZ (i.e. 3.1.0)?

I will do some more testing.

Running 3.1.1 at this time.

Do the countries in CET change their time this weekend?  Hungary, Norway, Switzerland, Netherlands....

We are going onto Daylight Savings Time, which moves our clocks one hour ahead.  If everyone does this, then no problem.  If CET countries do not, it may have some impact on our efforts to link up and play.....

Good point, thanks for bringing it up! Canada and the US change their clocks this weekend but in Europe it doesn't happen for three more weeks (29 March). So if I have this right, from this Sunday you guys will be 5 hours behind us rather than 6 hours.

Yes, it fits mine! I might have a game with monwil as well around that time but I can certainly play back-to-back games as long as we arrange the times beforehand to avoid clashing.

Per a post upthread monwil is available until 10:30 EST, so maybe I could play her first at about 9:30 EST and then play against you at 10:30am EST if that suits everyone?

Meanwhile, I should be available for a game tonight (at say 9 or 10 CET) if anyone would like to play.

If your clocks will have gone forward on Sunday and you're normally 6 hours behind Switzerland does this mean that your 9:30 game will be 14:30 for jungleboy?

EDIT: looks like JB beat me to it!

Leven, sorry you didn't have any opponents last night. It seems that even board game geeks sometimes go out on Saturday night :)

I am available to play throughout the day today starting now. I have my game with rfielder at 2:30pm CET and hopefully a game with Carcking after that. I can also play this morning, but not tonight. PM me or reply to this thread if you want to play.

Group C is finally off and racing!

I just played rfielder with the final score: jungleboy 140, rfielder 127.

This was a very close and hard-fought game throughout. rfielder led for most of the game, while I had dedicated most of my meeples to a city with two cathedrals, and farms. With 15 tiles left, he led by about 20 points and was looking good. Then I drew the CCCF tile I needed to complete the cathedral city for 48 points. This gave me a large lead and I thought I was fairly safe but rfielder came back by blocking me out of another city and completing it for himself and taking control of the second largest farm with his large follower. I secured control of the main farm but even so, he grabbed a smaller farm and an eight-point cloister that almost won it for him. I closed a 12-point city with the last tile of the game and won by 13 points. Looking at the final scoreboard, he destroyed me on roads and really it was only the cathedral city that saved me. Apart from that I was mostly outplayed.

I can be home from work by 4:00PM to 4:30PM EST, anything earlier is chancy.

The second game of the league has just been finished. The result is:

Leven
vs jungleboy 176:133

As usual, I made a video recording of the game, you can watch it here (http://youtu.be/hj6pjFtpQL0).

Quite early in the game with a lucky draw I was able to trap jungleboy's big follower (jungleboy could have escaped with his next tile), which gave me a big advantage in the final phase. I had much luck with the tiles during the game, gained lots of points with inns, and I was able to get into jungleboy's cathedral city. Towards the end jungleboy took some risk by beginning to build another cathedral city but I could successfully make it incompletable. I could even prevent him from finishing a long road with inn, and I had quite a comfortable lead but then jungleboy managed to take the majority in the most valuable farm making the score close again. But with 15 tiles to go he had no more followers in his supply while I still had 4, and I could even join one of them into that farm with my last tile. Lucky start of the tournament for me.

This was a game that was really painful.. at some point Leven made me connect my two cities., trying to trap me every time. at the end he trap both cities, with any possibility to complete them both. sadly Leven then got the two cloisters with road and put me behind him.

Actually I feel it was rather losing one point than winning one. In the first part of the game I successfully trapped several followers of rfielder (including his big follower in an incompletable cathedral city), although this strategy required a lots of rounds where I could not receive any points (because I was focusing on blocking something instead of building). As a result of this, rfielder built a lead of 20-30 points at the middle of the game but I thought it was a manageable gap and I will be able to catch him up mainly if I can get majority on the main farm. My first big mistake was that I did not use my big follower to get that majority which meant that I used one more follower unnecessarily. My second mistake was a clear overlooking of a situation when I thought that one of rfielder's cities is also blocked although it wasn't, and he soon drew a tile which finished that city. Therefore for the last few tiles when the score was very close we both had 1 follower in the supply. It may have been a bad decision from me when I placed that single follower to a city having 6 tiles left (so I had no follower in supply for the last 3 rounds) but then Robert also made a mistake not building and scoring a two-tile city (where he could receive 4 points without losing a follower). Then with his last tile he deployed the follower to a 6 point farm, getting a lead of 3 points. Fortunately my last tile made me possible to expand one of my farms and so to equal the score.

All in all, the draw is a fair result I think. Thanks rfielder for this great game.

Carcking - we have 3.1.1 install.  I can try hosting, but so far nobody outside my area can see my server!

There was a small team of observer-commentators watching the Carcking/ rfielder and Carcking/ monwil clashes last night which was great fun. Both games were quite excellent to watch!

My favourite thing was this little arrangement of cities which looked a bit like a slightly tipsy man with a moustache:

Another game played. Final score: jungleboy 154, SRBO 120.

This was close all the way and if SRBO had been able to finish the cathedral city in the north, he would have won the game. We tied the main farm and the secondary farm, and everything else was pretty even except I did quite well on cloisters (9 + 9 + 8 ).

What is the preference for screen captures - the entire game, or individual of the scoreboard and the tiles?

I preferred two separate, so that each is larger and easier to see.

I usually do the same, and I usually upload them somewhere and then link to the image rather than attaching too. But ultimately it doesn't really matter too much.

Binder - I can be available from 4:00PM EST, which is 9:00PM CET, if that is not too late for you.

Hosting may be an issue - it seems my hosting is nonfunctional.  I have played a few games with the online server, and it worked OK.

And another game! jungleboy 179, B1nder 142

Funny that I won the city with both cathedrals and yet b1nder beat me by one point on cities. And farms were basically even. So it was cloisters and roads that were the difference.

If you could tell us when you will be online, we can try to be available at the same time - or let you know that we will not be around.

Given the time difference between EST and CET, it would work a lot better if you could let us know when you will be available - both date and time would really help.

Thank you.

Monwil vs Rfielder - 169 - 219

Outstanding scores from both of you.
I think 219 is the top score of the I&C league so far. And the aggregate score (388) may also be the highest.
I assume you both gained the 69 points for that huge city including a cathedral.

Yes.

If anything, I was lucky at the end of the game.  Got the tiles to take the farm, and my last piece finished the cathedral city on the right side.  Monwil did not get such good tiles, otherwise the results might have been very different.  This was a luck win, not a skill win.

Then again, I have lost or tied a few games based on the luck of the draw of the last 2-3 tiles.....

I agree. I scored 87 against Jere which is little more than half of Monwil's score. The major difference being that hers was a losing score whereas mine was a winning score (just). Well done both!

It just goes to show how different games can be depending on who you're playing (this is why I'm interesting in tracking the highest losing and lowest winning scores). Jere and I play very similarly and if anything he's a lot better than me, I just got lucky in our game...

[...] before our clocks change for daylight saving.

Very good point! Take advantage of this before the end of this week!

Though I've noticed something in the past 3 weeks:  Some people seem to have trouble to organise their games and it is clearly NOT due to time differences.  It's ok to share with other participants via the appropriate thread your availability at the very beginning to give everyone a general idea of when you could play but then you have to make very specific and separate appointments with each one of your opponents in private messages. First you send an invitation to someone where you either specify a day and time or a limited time frame. It's important to offer some flexibilty and add alternative days/times so that if its not possible for your opponent to play your first proposed time then he/she can pick another time where he/she knows you are for sure available. Thats it. Easy.

Don't rely on luck, be strategic! ;)

jungleboy 202, monwil 151

As rfielder points out, the difference was only one city ... but that city had a cathedral and was worth 60 points. We fought hard for it in the early part of the game and I had four followers to monwil's three. At the time I closed it, we were exactly even at 52-52 if I remember correctly. Then I had a comfortable lead and spent most of the rest of the game adding farmers to the various small farms to consolidate my lead. Monwil came back to tie up some of the farms but the gap from the cathedral city was too much in the end.

In light of SRBO's withdrawal, and having spoken with everyone else from this group individually as to how best to continue, I'm pleased to be able to welcome Aenima to the group to take over where SRBO left off...

Aenima will play all 4 of SRBO's remaining games in this group followed by the 2 final matches in whichever of the final groups he ends up in. Obviously this isn't an ideal position to be in, but it's always going to be a bit messy if someone drops out in the middle of a league and we have all agreed between us that this was the best way to continue for the following reasons:

- Leven and jungleboy both beat SRBO and deserve to keep their wins, excluding these results and asking them to play again against Aenima in order to win back the points they've already rightly won would not be fair.

- Similarly though, giving away straight wins (forfeits) to everyone else in the group isn't fair either as this undermines the wins achieved by jungleboy and Leven. It also robs B1nder, Carcking, monwil and rfielder of the opportunity to win by more than 35 points which is how many points would be given away in the case of forfeit. And further still, forfeits would mean they don't get to play the full number of games, which would be a shame for them, as playing Carcassonne is what the league is all about moreso than who finishes where.

- Aenima will be starting off with 2 losses under "his" belt but this has been explained to him and he is happy with this. These losses won't count against him in his "career" summary but will remain in place for the purpose of this tournament.

Please join me in wishing Aenima every success in the league. He's being a bit of a hero in this by agreeing to take over, and I'm very grateful to him for his willingness to join in and overall enthusiasm!  :)

Each of your opponents are now 6 hours ahead of you, so 6pm your time will be midnight for Aenima, B1nder and jungleboy. Maybe this will be OK for some of them if they don't mind the late night...

My status is 'day-to-day' as I will be in a new hotel most nights for the next two weeks so I can't always be sure of the Internet connection. So I will try to give updates when I can. In any case, by Saturday I will be in Portugal which is one hour behind Spain so that will make it a little easier.

I can play at midnight as well, if anyone can play at their 6am or so.

Just post up when you can play and we'll see what works.

There are still 3 games to play - all with Carcking.

Tuesday and Thursday no game was played.

Did you make an appointment with Carcking to play a league game?

The opponents for Carcking are:
- B1nder
- jungleboy
- aenima / SRBO

After me and Carcking had tried to play our game two nights in a row, we managed it on our third attempt. Merit to Dan for waking up, providing a server and make it happen  :)

The winner was Carcking and here are the resaults:

Thanks for the merit! There are few things I'll get out of bed before 5am for, but watching a game of Carcassonne between two great players is one of them...  :(y)

Well played both, it felt like a fairly close game throughout although the farm made all the difference in the end.

jungleboy 165, carcking 132

I went 'all in' on a cathedral city with four followers and ended up closing it for 69 points. From there, carcking faced an uphill battle although he  won the main farm.

Well played. I'm sure Chuck is kicking himself for forgetting to claim one of the city tiles which jungleboy then claimed and merged into the big city as it was this that gave him the overall majority!

To finish 3rd, Carcking must win with a score difference of 59.  Not impossible but quite difficult. Good luck!

Why 59? I counted 118! And this already is almost impossible.

Because if Carckings differential goes up by 59 aenima's will come down by 59 and this will be enough to put him ahead...

Yes, good game jb. I tried something different for the fun of it you might say, or to test the game. Normally, I would have played to kill that city, as any of my opponents might attest - and that would have been a race, I'm sure, but instead I decided to join back into it to see what could happen - nothing to lose but the game so why not. You played well to keep me getting any more followers in, that was well done. Then it became interesting since I think it came down to needing two cccf tiles...and you were lucky enough to draw two of them...although it came down to being only two remaining with you still needing one - and you drew it.
But in the end it's my opinion that the Cathedral mechanic is over powering. True, you can try to kill the city and block the points, but that just tends to build the city beyond reason and comes to lucky draws. At home we never play with I&C without including the Cathars & Siege to temper them some.

The dragon can also be very use in such games.

I also like the Towers, although my partner enjoys them less so.

I have not played with Cathars & Siege.  Is that available on Carcassonne Shoppe?

This likely won't happen as I don't really play for points. It would require chasing a Cathedral city at least, which can prove luck more than prowess in most cases.

Cathars, Siege and the Besiegers are three different expansions that all have the same mechanics. Besiegers (with 6 tiles) is available at the Cundco store. Siege has 4 tiles and is part of Cult, Siege and Creativity, which is available here (http://shop.spiele-akademie.de/en/international/Carcassonne-Cult-Siege-Creativity.html?listtype=search&searchparam=carcassonne). And Cathars (4 tiles) is a Spielbox expansion from 2004 that is out of print but that occasionally pops up on ebay/BGG etc at an inflated price.

*offtopic* I highly recommend this mini expansion, rfielder. It has a neat mechanism which makes sense and adds to gameplay (not so far fetched like "Windroses", "Festival" and the like), and the tiles are really beautiful. I have the "Besiegers" from CundCo, but the other sets are, although different, great looking, too. But for me, one set is enough.

But anyway, outstanding performance, aenima! Who knows how it could be, if you would participate in the League from the beginning...
