Title: Do your BIG meeples roam free?
Post by: cicerunner on February 04, 2020, 02:15:42 AM
"Do your BIG meeples roam free?" By which I mean, when do you use the big meeples?
Love them? Hate them? Never heard of them? Let your poll vote do the talking!

But not all your talking! Whatever your response, please do share your thoughts on the big meeples in the comments. If I've missed an obvious poll option, do let me know.

Rummaging through Carcassone Central for other references to the BIG meeple, I came across this index (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=2113.msg0) to danisthirty (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?action=profile;u=112)'s "Element of the Week" series. Some great stuff in there, but no BIG meeples! :(

I just edited the poll and reset the votes. Apologies to the one person who had already voted!

[My reason for editing being to remove the "I haven't yet decided" option. This would have made sense if the "allow users to change their vote" option worked. But it apparently doesn't, so if you're undecided as yet (like me), just don't vote yet!]

I love the Big Meeple... I like it to mix it with the Phantom and sometimes with the Abbot. Normally I include I&C and T&B to increase the tile count, but not always applying the rules for the tiles or including all the other figures.

The BIG meeples land my table with the original Carcassonne mostly just when using I&C, otherwise very, very seldom. But with Star Wars, they´re a must.

*cough*MY Element of the Week series. Dan just made the Index.*cough*

Sidenote: I call it the Big Follower, and it was mentioned one week:

Sidenote sidenote: I also plan to continue this endeavour at some point with the new expansions. I just haven't bothered yet. Still need to play the last two years' worth a bit first.

@cicerunner This notation change between C1 and C2 can drive anyone mad:

Big Follower in C1 = Large Meeple in C2

But in any case we understand each other if you use any combination.

@whaleyland Looking forward to reading more from your Element of the Week series.  :(y)

Let me get you some medicine for that ...
Genuinely, credit where credit is due, it's a great series. Thank you.

Oh yes! Notwithstanding my tagline, I really can't believe I missed it. I'm going to blame the same reason as my previous error - I'm reading on mobile.

Sidenote sidenote: I also plan to continue this endeavour at some point with the new expansions. I just haven't bothered yet. Still need to play the last two years' worth a bit first.
Medicine medicine!!
Which roughly translates as, "Yes please! Do feed my new found addiction!"

When I first posted the poll, I wasn't sure how I'd be using the big meeples myself, but I was interested to find out how everyone else used them. Even now I'm not fully decided - I've probably still only played about 20 games of Carcassonne in total! With a bit more thought at the time I could probably have predicted what the poll and people's responses reveal - that because I&C is so popular (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=1192.0) itself, often included by default, the big meeples are effectively a default too. So it's actually a relatively small number of games where using the big meeples or not is even a choice. I think the big meeples seem subtle enough that they can be included in other games without the I&C tiles as long as the tile count is extended by other expansions. Then again even a base game + big meeples would be interesting as an experiment!

Thanks for all your replies people. And your patience as I discover for myself all those things which have become self evident to many of you over the years!

I speak for myself but I find this type of discussions interesting... In this case you question something that many may take for granted. So your view with fresh eyes keeps me thinking...

Hi Clay!

Congrats for your first post!  ;D

So you play with 8 meeples on the board?

Cheers!

I try, but only by playing the game - not the rules!
