Old and New Compared
« on: April 18, 2017, 04:16:25 AM »
So did they fix the one tile that was missing the watermark?   ::)

I was thinking of starting a thread with the differences in the old vs new versions, but after reading through I don't believe the thread would be very interesting.  So far we have optional farmers, new wagon rules, and no catapults.  If they added a dog or made the Hills more exciting in this expansion, that would have been something.  I'm not sure this change in artwork did much aside from increasing the value of the old art.

Go for it, I'm wondering if they fixed the double-water-mark in BCB too :)

There are also the new Gardens, which feature on select tiles.

True.  I was so put off by that "expansion" that I tend to ignore it.  I am interested to see how different the vineyards look.

Farmers are now optional.

The wagon moves differently

Not really but I searched and found this:

New Wagon Rules

We also discussed the new farming rules briefly in our completionist polls last year: Base Game Rules

You know how once in a while you will find a long time player who insists upon playing with the original farmer rules?  Well now we are those people.  The gardens are rather apparent, but for tile counters there number is rather important.  The wagon rules are less apparent.  We have a couple we occasionally play with that has new art Carcassonne.  I think my family could easily learn the gardens, but I think it is safer to avoid playing with the new wagon.  It isn't fair to force others to use the old rules, but it also sucks having to spend 15 minutes explaining the differences to my wife and child.  They may forget and miss out on an open cloister and settle for a small road instead.  That 5 to 7 point swing could mean the game.

There may be more new rules.  I am looking forward to seeing the Hills and Sheep rules especially.

Bear in mind that the Farmer rules are included in an Appendix of advanced rules, they have not been removed.  Also farmer rules are included in ALL national and international competitions; so I wouldn't be so fast as to say they are now redundant, or even changed.

In real life I only play with Carcassonne II, but based on the iOS mobile app there are also specific tile-based differences. For example, the inn on the T-junction in I&C applied to 2 of the 3 roads rather than just one.

I think they could have done the same for the wagon...
I'm updating the RCA, the Italian version of the CAR, and I am in a difficult position...
I think I will specify the different rules and I'll tell to use the one you like regardless of the version played.
what do you think?

I think you have a responsibility to share the latest rules from Hans Im Gluck and then discuss the  changes, just like the original, revised and re-revised farming rules.
