Bekse asked me to write the games up as he was 'otherwise engaged' oh the ignominy of it all - not only did I lose both games but I have to talk about it, in front of you all!

Bekse romped away in Game 1 - stealing my city that I had worked so hard on and then finishing a second.   He also managed to join me on an 11 point road and beat me to the 15 point farm, recycling his meeples and even having one left at the end.

Game 2 a more even battle, reminded me of the old adage "When one door closes...another one slams in your face!"

A closer game full of if's, but's, then's and maybe's for me.   I was sweating on a CCC? tile to complete my city over on the right and needed the RRRR to complete my road AND cloister, recovering two meeples to be put to good use. But...Who pulled BOTH of them? No prizes for guessing who (Hint: it wasn't me)

Bekse 2 - dronedrone 0

Admitting that you had a problem is the first step to overcoming it. Don't back away from it dronedrone, we're here to support you, not to judge you.

That aside, well done to both of you for getting your games played so quickly! :) :(y)

It were great games indeed!
First game i could finish 2 big cities and overall have more meeples during the game so not much trouble there. Second game was close, i got some crucial tiles and claimed the victory.

Thanks for the games!

Riker and I played our round 8 match this evening. The results:

:green-meeple: Riker vs :violet-meeple: Leven 81:86

:violet-meeple: Leven vs :green-meeple: Riker 85:85
(My second consecutive match with a tied game. :o )

Two extremely close games, could have gone either way. My overall victory was supported by some lucky tile draws on my side plus a mistake by Riker with his last tile in the second game. Can you find a better placement for that tile?

Can you find a better placement for that tile?

Not an obvious choice at all, especially given the pressure of what looks like it was a very tight game! However, robbing your opponent of 3 points is as useful as generating 3 points for yourself (assuming this is the placement you were talking about and I'm not missing something?)...

Yes, it is. But even without losing those 3 farm-points, I would have lost the game if Riker had deployed his last follower to the long road (worth 8 points).

I will not be available to play much in August. I suggest the tournament carries on without me in the meantime and hopefully I will soon catch up in September.

The tempo is horrible anyway. More than a month already for only round 8...

I'm here and waiting for round 9.
It seems the tournament has an unannounced summer  break. Maybe Dan knows what happened.

Hi all.

If there is sufficient interest then I am happy to continue with the tournament. There's only so much I can do in order to facilitate the playing of the games though, so unless everyone else is 100% onboard then we will struggle to get to the end with all games played. It just gets messy if we leave games unplayed.

Outstanding games to be played:

R6: Sinscerly vs. MrNumbers

R7: Sinscerly vs. JackFace

R8: Rosco vs. JackFace
R8: MrNumbers vs. TheSteveAllen
R8: LaplazadeCarcassonne vs. danisthirty

I will be in touch with LaplazadeCarcassonne and will hopefully get our match played before the end of this week. It is entirely down to me that our match was never played earlier. He was very flexible in terms of scheduling our match previously but I let him down on two separate occasions for reasons that I won't go into here...

I would be very grateful to anyone else who has an outstanding match if they could get in touch with their outstanding opponents so that we can get things back on track within a sensible timeframe.

Good luck everyone!

JackFace and Rosco are due to play this evening. I haven't heard back from laplazadecarcassonne yet, but I'm sure I will do soon. Any news from anyone else?

Well that was interesting.

The first game went well for me and i seemed to be playing reasonably well.  I won the game but Jack certainly kept me on my toes.  The second did not go so well.  I was on the back foot trying to defend with every single tile.  i could not go on the atack as my poor tile draws, jacks good tile draws and jacks skill just kept pushing and pushing.  His last tile took the game making the 5 point difference.

Great games - very tight. As you say, probably just down to tile draw in the end. Cheers!

JackFace has been busy! Thanks Jack. And thanks to Rosco and Sinscerly for playing their games too.

We still have three matches left to be played before we continue. PMs going out shortly! C:-)

I think it would be time to start a new league and / or finish this round and make draws for the unplayed matches.

I would be in for a new league. :(y)
@Dan, What do you think about that?
Title: Re: Basegame League - Round 8
Post by: Halfling on April 20, 2020, 02:17:07 AM
I would like to finish my matches in this league and participate in another league. The new league could be with expansion, doesn't  have to be same format.

I'm never one to turn down a game of Carcassonne but I think the lack of any meaningful carrot (or stick) means that these things always seem doomed to failure after the initial influx of excitement has worn off. We saw it here and it was the same with The Steve's excellent series of expansion leagues. I guess the situation is slightly different now in that most people have time to play their games, but that won't always be the case and it's never any less of a shame for the people who are participating when those who aren't force it to a halt.

It's also worth remembering that from what I can tell, very few currently active members of Carcassonne Central seem interested in playing Carcassonne online. Certainly compared to say 3 or 4 years ago when there was a constant buzz from various competitions that were going on here. I miss those days. :'(

If either of you, or anyone else, is interested in kicking off a new tournament then I'm sure I'd be very happy to support and take part in it. But until that happens, I'm probably just going to keep myself busy at BGA which has a far more sophisticated approach to online competition as this is effectively what it's built for.

I can take it on me, matches could be played on BGA / JCloisterZone whatever suits anyone. Depending on  basegame / expansions that are chosen.

What about a base game only knockout?  e.g. 8 players, random draw for 4 QF's followed by 2 SF and then the final?

First name drawn for each match gets the extra tile.

Just a thought.
