It's been a while since I've shared my rainbow carpet with anyone. I've not received many games recently, but I thought there might be a few fans of the following:

A recent facsimile gift box of the 1st edition of "The Hobbit", it also includes a short essay on Dragons not found elsewhere.
The first two books in the Histories of Middle Earth - The book of lost tales parts 1 and 2.
The History of The Hobbit - that basically includes early drafts of The Hobbit.
and
Kullervo, which is based on a Danish saga (I think), that Tolkien used as inspiration for The Children of Hurin. I don't know much about it.

Cool!

Had you read them all or you have to catch up with the rare ones?

These arrived today, so not had chance to read them yet!

I've got a copy of the Hobbit from the mid 1960s, quite an early edition. But it's a bit too old to read comfortable.
Some changes were made to The Hobbit after Lord of the Rings was published to tie the stories together better. The 1st here obviously doesn't have those changes.

The other book here, the History of The Hobbit, is about 960 pages and includes 2 draft texts. I'm not really sure what to expect.

The Histories of Middle earth is a 12 book series written by Christopher Tolkien, it documents a lot of the unfinished drafts, and changes made to text while Tolkien was working on the Mythology.  I've not read them before, but I think these first two books are a direct result of the success of the Unfinished Tales.

No idea about Kullervo. Tolkien translated the national epic of "Kalevala"  (Finnish not Danish, sorry), and the result was a story he would refine and retell.
I'm interested to make the comparisons.

If it's good, I may pick up the other recently published translations and works that Tolkien was responsible for. Beowulf, Sigurd and Gudrún, etc.

So this is becoming another streak of completionism step by step?

BTW, doesn't The Hobbit inspire you for an expansion?  ;)

I work at a library and just finished gathering copies of all of The History of Middle-Earth books into our permanent collection from the system's floating collection. That being said, I am jealous of your copies of Part 2 of the Book of Lost Tales since I wasn't able to add that--the only two copies in the floating system are the 1992 pocket book versions, which our cataloger refused to add to the permanent collection. I've read Kullervo. It wasn't as interesting as I had hoped it would be. It was clunky and definitely not a final version and Verlyn Flieger clearly struggled to convert the manuscripts into something interesting. I've skimmed some of the two-volume version of The History of the Hobbit but I hope to read through it more thoroughly at a later point in time. I've read about a third of the History of Middle-Earth books and am really looking forward to The Nature of Middle-Earth coming out next year.

I'm not familiar with the pocket book versions of Lost Tales; are they different from paperbacks?
Harper Collins offer a print on demand service for these books, but at £40 each, I thought they were a bit much.
I was considering the bound 3 volume hardbacks, but basically the paper is very thin, and they seem pretty unwieldly, so thought I'd start with the paperbacks.

I'll probably start Kullervo and let you know what I think, as soon as I finish Beren and Luthien, which was my favourite story from the Silmarillion.

I quite enjoyed Kullervo, though it is short and experimental the connections to the Children of Hurin are very clear.  It's interesting to contrast the character developments.
I found Flieger's essay at the back good to read.

I think footnotes would have made a better format, I see why that was chosen, but it's often a little too late to find out about something after you've read it, and without an indicator it's hard to know where to find them.

The 2 almost identical essays from Tolkien felt a little unnecessary, I suspect the Tolkien academics may be able to process the differences more closely, but it was a little bit of 'deja vu' for the lighter reader.

The only other thing to note is that there are an awful lot of references to academic papers that are not readily accessible.  The History or Middle Earth, and the great heroes trilogy do not rely on this approach when discussing the text. I think I would have preferred a similar approach.

I think we may be in a similar boat.

I ordered a few things, nothing big, on 27th November. 11 days later, the most recent news I have of my package is this (from DHL):

"Sa, 05.12.2020, 10:07, Dorsten, Germany
The international shipment has been processed in the export parcel center"

Most of my previous orders have been fulfilled within a week. I suppose it's to do with all the Christmas post.

Good luck! :(y)

I placed my order on the 19th November, it was posted on the 23rd

Same, regarding previous orders. I guess Black Friday post doesn't help either
