Title: Forum links
Post by: Rosco on April 29, 2015, 01:50:18 AM
Hi

I was wondering if someone could adjust something on the forum to make links automatically open in a new tab/window?  At the moment, I always need to remember to right click and open in new tab so I dont lose where I was before.  Can this be done?

Not sure if your mouse has a middle click but the scroll wheel on a mouse is usually clickable and this will open up links in new tabs.

Many mouse products do these days. Here in Sweden I can't recall ever seeing a mouse without the wheel. And rarely are there less than 4 buttons. Some are just too annoying with buttons where you hold your thumb on the side etc.
But I take it these are more for work, like when designing and drawing with the computer.

Then there is the drag option. You can click on a link, holding down the left mouse button and drag it to a new tab by releasing the mouse button to the right of of all the other tabs.

You can of course drag the url to bookmark field as well etc. etc. (works on Internet Explorer and Chrome, untested on other browsers)

Ok, but wouldn't it be better for external link s just to open automatically in a new tab? Just my opinion.

I'd like that as well, but then sea splits when some don't want it to be opened in a new tab.

Everyone could post options here see if any good ones comes up making this a viable change, but this may take a while as this is not a priority issue and involves hands on with the forum server.

No this will not happen. Ever since the beginning of (web) time in 1999, the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 1.0 and onward have stated that opening links in a new tab or window is not recommended. Some sources:

I just use right-click, open in a new tab/window.

No this will not happen.
This is the only forum I belong to, where links do not open in a new tab.

That may be true, but it would seem that all other forum software ignores official rules and goes with what the users like.....

Regardless of any changes or not, I found this thread to be very useful.  I was not aware that the middle button would open in a new tab.  I have since programmed it to one of the spare keys on my gaming keyboard, very handy if your fingers are old and stiff like mine.

Thanks all.   :(y)
