Title: Spiel Des Jahre 2017
Post by: Decar on May 27, 2017, 08:10:44 AM
The Spiel nominations were announced a few days ago.

You can read them here:
http://www.spiel-des-jahres.com/en/game_archive/2017

The shortlist for Spiel is:
Kingdomino, Magic Maze & 'Race to El Dorado'

All three of these games look like strong competition for one another.  I know Kingdomino has had more press coverage, but I'm not convinced it's ground-breaking.  Magic Maze is a co-op which is going to count big.  The mechanics look novel because all the players share the game's heroes and each player can only move heroes their particular way.  It seems like a clever take on the escape mechanism.  On the downside it is about robbing a shopping-mall; I hope thematically this would raise an eye-brow.
El Dorado is a Reiner Keniza and he's yet to win a SdJ.  I'd not even heard of this but it looks to be quite solid.

There were some nominations that didn't make the shortlist.  Of them, Klask get's my vote - Dan and I had a hilarious time playing this at Essen.  So much so I ordered a copy from an online store so it was home before I was!

The Kennerspiel look tight too:
Terraforming Mars, Raiders of the North Sea & EXIT.

I've yet to play Raiders having backed it - I'll be wishing them luck - their KS delivery has been impeccable - I can't wait to get this to the table!

I wonder how important ground-breaking-ness is.

El Dorado is a Reiner Keniza and he's yet to win a SdJ.

He won for Keltis in 2008.

Good point - I'd forgotten that!

I decided to check out the FAQ for the answer to your/my question:
Quote
What are the game-related criteria the “Spiel des Jahres” needs to fulfil?
Ultimately, it’s the overall impression that counts, the enjoyment of playing the game that can’t be broken down into individual measurable pieces.
Nevertheless, there are criteria which help evaluate a game:
Does it have a completely new concept or does it bring existing elements together to create a new experience?
Has the concept been realised in such a way as to engage the player?
Does it seem organic and whole or artificial and constructed?
Are the rules sensibly constructed, clear, understandable, free of gaps, contradictions and errors?
Do the components match their function, are they sturdy and durable?
Is the design attractive, do the box, game boards, rules and components complement each other?

I've read this criteria a couple of times....I think Poker stands a good chance of winning SdJ 2018.

The Kennerspiel is really up in the air.  Terraforming Mars and Raiders of the North Sea look interesting.  Exit looks like a one time play, but maybe I just don't get it.

I will be surprised if Kingdomino doesn't win the main award. El Dorado looks like an ok racing game.  Magic Maze looks terrible.  I shouldn't knock things I haven't tried, but the playthroughs I have seen online didn't win me over at all

I watched Game Night's video yesterday, I thought it looked like a great family game:

Cool! I haven't played Kingdomino for a while but I might bring it to the board game meetup on Wednesday, or try to introduce it to junglegirl soon.

That does like a cool speed game! I don't have one in my collection yet, but this one surely looks like a top contender!
