If you are new to the competitions, please, carefully read the following tournament notes/guidance/rules before continuing.
If you already participated in some Carcassonne Central competitions before, the following rules are pretty much the same as always, except final stage (points 9-10). Let's try this format this time and see how it goes.

1. Players have already been divided into three different groups (Fliers, Goldminers, Wizards). Each player will play one game of Carcassonne against every other player in their group individually via a series of 2-player/ head-to-head games. The winner of each game will be awarded two league points whereas the loser gets nothing. If the game is tied, both players receive one league point each.

2. Players in each group will be ranked according to the number of league points they have scored. PD (Points Differential) will be used as an initial tie-breaker if there is no clear winner based on league points alone, and total combined score (from all games) will be used as a second tie-breaker if necessary. Your PD is calculated by taking the total number of points scored by you and subtracting the total number of points scored against you (combined across all games).

3. Games will be played online through the latest stable version of JCloisterZone (currently 3.4.3). Please ensure you have downloaded this and are familiar with its controls and features before the competition begins. It is also recommended that you have played at least one practice game against a live opponent in order to identify and resolve any technical problems before your first game.

4. JCloisterZone includes a number of artificial aids such as farm hints, projected scores and even tile-counting assistance. We all are busy people, and time is valuable for all of us. Many players spend decent amount of time anyway to count points for farms and uncompleted features, so with the purpose of speeding up our games, I allow to use "projected scores" feature. Other aids are still prohibited. I can't stop you from using them anyway, and won't know if you do, but I do urge you to play as fair as possible. I know it's a competition and we all want to win, but let's keep it fair, fun and friendly as far as possible...

5. Each game will include the basic tiles plus four expansions: Flier, Goldmines, Mage & Witch and Crop Circles. This is 102 tiles including the start tile, so 101 tile will be shuffled and randomly drawn for you and your opponent in turn. The starting player should be chosen at random through JCZ by selecting the "Randomize seating order" checkbox on the pre-game screen.

6. If any unexpected behaviour occurs during your game (for example if you think you have discovered a bug within JCloisterZone which may have altered the course of the game for you), please consult with your opponent and the CAR/ anyone else who happens to be in the chat room at the time to determine whether it appears to be a genuine bug. If it is, please save your game and post details of the bug along with anything else relating to how it came about on the forums. If however, you and your opponent are both happy to continue with your game despite the bug then feel free to do so, but don’t forget to mention the bug afterwards no matter how minor it may have seemed!

7. Please post a screenshot of your game, including final scores and score breakdown, back to your group thread as soon as your game is complete. It's always interesting to hear what happened during the game too, so please feel free to post any thoughts/ comments at the same time if you wish. If you're not sure how to capture/ post screenshots, please ask on the forums and either myself or someone else will explain how to do this (we're a friendly bunch!)

8. It is the players responsibility to liaise with their fellow group-members in order to find a mutually convenient time to play their game. This is expected to be done predominantly through Private Messages but feel free to use your group thread (here) too if this is easier. Please do keep any appointments you make, or at least give your opponent as much notice as possible if something occurs which prevents you from playing at the agreed time (more on the "Unwritten Rules" is available here).

9. Each of the 3 initial groups contains 6 players so the first stage of the competition will end when every player (all 18 of us) has played 5 games. At this point, the pool will split again into 3 groups of 6 depending on finishing position in the initial groups. So, the 2 top-ranked players from groups will form group F1, those who came 3rd and 4th in each group will form group F2, and 5th and 6th - group F3.

10. Play in groups F1 to F3 will constitute the second stage of the competition which will run in the same way as the first. League points, PD and total score will be reset at this point (but remembered for overall stats) so that no single player in any group has any kind of advantage. Finishing positions in groups at the second stage will determine overall rank: 1st=F1-1, 2nd=F1-2, 3rd=F1-3, 4th=F1-4, 5th=F1-5, ..., 15th=F3-3, 16th=F3-4, 17th=F3-5, 18th=F3-6.

Finally, you may find the following links helpful: Carcassonne Central IRC Chat and JCloisterZone.

Good luck everyone! ;) :(y)

So, the first League, which I was the responsible of, is over for a while ago. We have voted for the next League, but unexpected comeback of Farin, the author of JCZ, slightly changed our plans and gave us hope that we will have the full implementation of the big expansion #6 soon in JCZ. This was the main reason why I want to postpone expansion #6 and play Carcassonne Minis League instead. Hello and welcome, ladies and gentlemen! :D

We will play with all available expansions from Carcassonne Minis series, including Flier, Goldmines, Mage and Witch and Crop Circles II. This is 30 additional tiles (8+8+8+6), which makes all matches must be played with total of 102 tiles including classic start tile. This is the same amount of tiles, which we played in P&D expansion. Let's hope the outcome of this competition will be the same :P

Maximum amount of players is not defined, let's see how many players we will get, and then I will decide, how many groups we will have. The registration gates will be opened for about 2 weeks.

Please confirm that you have read our Code of Conduct before signing up to take part, to ensure that you have a proper idea of what is expected of you individually in order for this competition to be successful and enjoyable for everyone. Tournament rules will be similar to previous Expansion League so most of you are familiar with them, but still I will publish the rules together with groups' breakdowns later.

Good luck! :(y)

Leagues (including expansion leagues) / Poll: Next Expansion League
« on: April 26, 2017, 01:32:10 PM »
Bridges, Castles and Bazaars League is over, and the question is very simple: what's next? :)
Our online competitions are the big part of Carcassonne Central and I can't imagine it without them anymore :D So we have to move on and play more C:-) Now about options.

Option 1: Count, King, and Robber
Under this option I mean a compilation of expansions, which where published as the big 6th expansion. This compilation includes 4 expansions: King and Robber Baron, The Count of Carcassonne, The River II and Heretics & Shrines. All of them exists in JCloisterZone, with one detail: The Count of Carcassonne is implemented only with tiles, not the actual rules. But this is what we have. This compilation gives us 23 additional tiles (including River II tiles) plus The City of Carcassonne (12 tiles), but minus starting tile from the Base game.

Option 2: Carcassonne Minis
Here I mean a compilation of expansions, known as "Carcassonne Minis". In ideal situation it would be good to play with all 7, but in JCZ we have only 4: The Flier (Mini 1), The Goldmines (Mini 4), Mage and Witch (Mini 5) and Crop Circles II (Mini 7). It makes it 30 additional tiles, which is exactly the same as Princess & Dragon expansion has.

Option 3: Go back through all major expansions starting with Inns & Cathedrals
Pretty obvious option, my least favorite. I love Carcassonne for it's wide variety of expansions, and there are many un-played expansions left (in terms of the leagues).

Option 4: Something else (please post below)
Maybe you have some different combination of expansions in mind? Or completely other idea? Please, share!

ADDED:
Option 5: Single expansion from Carcassonne Minis

Also added this option, as some people would vote for it.

All group games are complete, time to find out everyone's overall places and, of course, the winner of the BC&B League!
We will have 5 groups with 3 players each. Everyone must play exactly 2 games (with other players from his group) and it will determine the final rankings.

News and Events / Latvian National Championship 2017 (March 19th)
« on: March 20, 2017, 07:44:52 AM »
The same day as Dutch championship there was also Latvian Carcassonne championship. This year we set a new participant record - 50 people! We were divided into 2 groups (24 and 26 players) and started championship. Our format is very close to World championship format - we play 5 rounds of head-to-head games, recalculating Buchholz after each round in order to get opponent with the same skill. Our all-time champion was very busy with his studies at Finland, so he didn't come. This was my chance to take the throne! ;D
First round fixtures are completely random, and my opponent was 5-6-years old boy. I was so unhappy to win from him, but this is championship after all. He played pretty well, escaped some of my traps, tried to set traps for me, didn't allow me to connect to his long road. During final scoring, before counting farmers, we were even - 76:76! But he didn't place any farmer, meantime I had 5 on different fields, which made all the difference. I advised him to pay attention to farms in his next games and I was truly happy for him, because he won at least one game (his last one)!
MrsNumbers also took part in the championship, we were at the same group, and her first opponent was woman, who won my last tournament with expansions, and who won from me two games in group stage in 2015. MrsNumbers lost that game.
But I lost my second game. Everyone can tell about at least one game in his "carrier", when you just can't win: you made everything right, you own main farm, but you opponent just continues to collect points and you can't do anything about it. This was my only chance for mistake, so, if I wanted to qualify into play-off games, I needed to win all remaining games. MrsNumbers won her second game, so we both needed the same.
My third game looked more like a friendly game: we finished together two big cities and one long road, the only difference was final scores: I had more than 50 points advantage :) MrsNumbers also had a win.
Fourth game was tough one - against finalist of Championship'2014. We started to spend meeples to potentially big city, then my opponent started to build his own cities, but soon enough I managed to block them: both his cities needed cfrr, all of which were already gone, and second half of the game I relaxed. Another win for me and MrsNumbers.
My final game was against newbie at championships, so I didn't know what to expect. Nothing special, relatively easy win. MrsNumbers did the same and we both qualified! MrsNumbers qualified from 3rd place in the group and I - from 4th (due worse Buchholtz).
My QF game was against B group winner. Unexpectedly easy win for me. But MrsNumbers lost here QF game against former champion (2012). She wasn't upset, as she needed to catch the bus to Lithuania (work trip).
In semi-finals I met the same woman from first MrsNumbers's game. There is such definition "uncomfortable opponent". She IS my uncomfortable opponent! It looks like she plays almost randomly: she places tiles very fast. She spent less than 5 minutes to the whole game, meanwhile I spent more than 15 minutes. I lost by 5 points. Another lost opportunity to became national champion. After that I easily won a game for 3rd place, but that woman became Latvian champion: in final game she won from champion'2012 (the one from MrsNumbers's QF game).
So this year I will try to sneak to the Worlds the same way I did it last year. Who knows, maybe I will have my second chance :D

If you are new to the competitions, please, carefully read the following tournament notes/guidance/rules before continuing.
If you already participated in some Carcassonne Central competitions before, the following rules are pretty much the same as always, except some changes in point 4.

1. Players have already been divided into three different groups (Bridges, Castles, Bazaars).

3. Games will be played online through the latest stable version of JCloisterZone (currently 3.4.2).

5. Each game will include the basic tiles plus the Bridges, Castles & Bazaars expansion only (no other expansions please). This is 84 tiles including the start tile, so 83 tiles will be shuffled and randomly drawn for you and your opponent in turn. The starting player should be chosen at random through JCZ by selecting the “Randomize seating order” checkbox on the pre-game screen.

9. Each of the 3 initial groups contains 5 players so the first stage of the competition will end when every player (all 15 of us) has played 4 games. At this point, the pool will split into 5 groups of 3 depending on finishing position in the initial groups. So, the top-ranked players from groups will form group F1, and those who came second in each group will form group F2. The same will be true for groups F3 to F5.

10. Play in groups F1 to F5 will constitute the second stage of the competition which will run in the same way as the first except with more groups and fewer people per group. League points, PD and total score will be reset at this point (but remembered for overall stats) so that no single player in any group has any kind of advantage. Finishing positions in groups at the second stage will determine overall rank: 1st=F1-1, 2nd=F1-2, 3rd=F1-3, 4th=F2-1, 5th=F2-2, ..., 12th=F4-4, 13th=F5-1, 14th=F5-2, 15th=F5-3.

Finally, you may find the following links helpful: Carcassonne Central IRC Chat and JCloisterZone.

Good luck everyone! ;) :(y)

Good luck everyone! ;) :(y)

As danisthirty wrote before, it's me who will be responsible for further Leagues and World Cups, so the time has come to represent the next Expansion League: Bridges, Castles & Bazaars League!

Players have different opinions about this expansion, especially Bazaars element, but we have what we have. Besides, this expansion's selection is based on forum members votes. I personally like this expansion, especially for bridges, as they can help to connect to opponent's farms much more easily >:D So, let's find out all the secrets of Carcassonne's 8th big expansion! :D

All matches will be base game + BC&B expansion only, total of 84 tiles including classic start tile. Not so big addition in tiles, but time consumption can be bigger because of bazaars. We do use auctions, so we'll play according to full official rules, without variants.

Tournament rules will be similar to all previous Expansion League competitions so most of you are familiar with them, but still I will publish the rules together with groups' breakdowns later.

Good luck to everyone! :(y)

Quizzes, Puzzles and Challenges / Carcassonne Central Online Quiz
« on: December 02, 2016, 03:50:51 AM »
Many of you have heard (some of you even participated, and one of you won ::) ) of Carcassonne Action-Quiz, which took place during amazing Carcassonne Anniversary Event in Essen this year. I want to offer to Carcassonne Central community a possibility to participate in this Quiz with slightly changed rules:
1. Every Carcassonne Central member can participate, but the prize can be claimed only by a person, who didn't take part in actual Action-Quiz in Essen.
2. The "platform" for the Quiz will be our chat room. Every participant will answer the Quiz questions privately to me, in separate chat window.
3. Players will have exactly 10 seconds to read a question and to provide an answer: A, B or C. Unlike from Action-Quiz, this won't be a knock-out competition: correct answers will be accumulated and the player with the most correct answers will win the Quiz. There are 30 questions overall.
4. The winner of the Quiz will get a prize from me - 2 Russian promo tiles ("Baga Yaga Hut" and "Bogatyr").

Carcassonne Central Online Quiz will take place on Sunday, 4th of December 2016 at 21:00 CET. Please, answer here if you are planning to take part, so if you will be a little bit late, we would wait for you for at least 5 minutes :)

P.S. If many of you won't be able to take part due to inappropriate date or time, please, propose your comfort time and I will see what I can do.

World Cup of Carcassonne Central / 2016 World Cup - Knock-Out Stage
« on: November 16, 2016, 02:23:29 PM »
Here are the fixtures for the Quarter-final part of Knock-out Stage of the World Cup.

Here are also expansions that will be used for the whole Knock-out stage. I have tried to make the games as balanced as possible, and as interesting as possible :) It's a pity that I won't take part in these games, as I'd love to try these combinations by myself.

QF:
Traders and Builders + Abbey and Mayor + The Corn Circles + Mage and Witch + Wind Roses + The Phantom = 127 tiles (starting tile is replaced by Wind rose tile)

SF:
Inns and Cathedrals + The Tower + The Festival + The Flier + The Goldmines + The German Monasteries = 134 tiles (cloisters from the base game have to be removed)

Final:
Traders and Builders + The Princess and The Dragon + Abbey and Mayor + Bridges, Castles and Bazaars + The Count of Carcassonne (tiles only) + The River II + The Besiegers + The Festival + GQ11 + The Phantom = 188 tiles (starting tile and river spring tile are removed)

Please, make appointments and play your games! Good luck to everyone!

On German website there is already information about newcoming spin-off - Carcassonne Amazonas.
I doubt the displayed date of release (26. September 2016), because it should be published olny on Spiel'2016 (13.10.2016).

Official Rules / Unfinished river
« on: March 17, 2016, 02:21:41 AM »
On one website I have found some advanced River rules with many examples. Amongst other text there is one interesting statement:
Quote
The official ruling from Hans im Glück is "Try to think while playing.  Players may have an unfinished River...but it‘s their own fault."
Where does this rule come from? Is it really "official"? If so, this must be included into CAR.
