It never made sense to me that roads had as much worth finished as unfinished. Inns changed that in a good way.

I never trust that terminology until I see it. It could just mean completely new to the public, which The Monasteries would be, brief preview release not withstanding.
Again - I hope you are right and that I am wrong.

as well as a completely new mini expansion together in a box.
Well, I guess "told you so" is in order.

It is called an ellipsis and you can read more about it here

@Yellow, you have an illegal tile placement. Are you aware of it?
That god-awful tile from Catapult? Its design is so bad that it can hardly count as a fail.

If you mean some other tile I did not catch it during a quick skimming.

Not a Traders & Builders fan?
The more expansions you mix into the fray, the less value does T&B hold. Using the builder itself is of course something else.

I rather suspect it's Hills & Sheep and River I (new edition) with the base game. They seem to be on a Hills & Sheep kick right now.

Could be. It would only validate what I just said though.  >:(

Base game with some inane expansion that will be impossible to get hold of in any other way for a couple of years? It would not be the first time, but I do hope I am wrong.

Any thoughts?
This is the same old bullshit they put out regularly. New tiles, impossible to get a hold of unless you either wait (and hope) until they sell it over priced at their store, or pay through your nose to get a lot of stuff that you already own.

But if Carcassonne operated solely on a basis of "common sense" then we would not need to have  a CAR of 300 pages and 470 footnotes.
What makes you think that? Since expansions rarely are playtested with eachother there will be many situations which are strange. I do, however, think that the CAR does hold a lot of superfluous pages and paragraphes.

Anyway, rivers divide fields. If you do not believe me I encourage you to go outside and find out for yourself.

Sure, visually it makes sense that the river divides fields. But that line of reasoning doesn't even always hold up, as not all pig herds are actually pig herds...
Yes it does - it is called "common sense".

All pig herd tiles are pig herd tiles. It applies here as well.

Not available in stores? How will they be made available then?

Other Games / Re: What game is hitting your table?

Eclipse
Last night I played a three player game of eclipse. We have almost all of the promos and expansions. I played Eridani, and the other two players were Planta and Orion Hegemony. I was worried about the Orion player at the start of the game and was keeping a cautious eye in his direction. In the meantime, the Planta expanded quickly and got a strong resource engine going. My own resource engine was coming a long, but not fast enough. Unfortunately, the Orion player got boxed in behind a bunch of bad tile draws with kickin' ancients on them. My plan was to build tiles to prevent Orion from getting me and having them attack the Planta. That never happened and by the time the two of them clashed, the Planta had a very strong force to be reckoned with. Orion was almost obliterated. We conceded the game to Planta at Turn 6. I really like this game and want to play more this year. My concern is that with fewer than four players, it may be best to play symmetrical races, (Terran or Magellan). With 2-3 players, the racial powers combines with tile draws can create an imbalance. Not sure how others feel about this. Not to take anything away from Planta, they played a very strong game. Looking back at last night's game, Orion and I should have made a move earlier, but hindsight offers more clarity than was evident at the time. Look to see more entries about this game in 2014. PS. The Ship Pack #1 sculpts are awesome!!!
Planta is rather special and I have been putting them aside in the games I have played so far. I would not use them in a three player game until all three players are familliar with the rest of the races.

Games with less than four players usually result in a stand-off. Last game I managed to draw no economic tiles at all, so I got my first extra money income in turn five (bah!). I still won, but that was only because the others left me alone. In the end my ships kicked arse!  >:D The result from getting a lot of research done.

The only advice I can give you is to be more aggressive. Eclipse is really a better game when there are fights going on.

Anything Else / Re: Happy Birthday
« on: February 04, 2014, 08:48:06 AM »
Thanks Tobias (and Carcking).
Then we will stick with AH for a while, but have you tried any of the expansions to AH?
Is there anyone in particular that we should get.
All of them, multiple times and in different combinations.

I could recommend any of them. Personally I do not fancy King in Yellow, but the rest are just fine. Innsmouth might be the best big expansion.

... I should probably split this off to its own topic.

Anything Else / Re: Happy Birthday

Tobias, great that you had a good birthday.
My youngest son has his birthday today.
By the way, I bought Arkham Horror to my oldest son Ted for Christmas but we haven't played it yet.
Can you give me your thoughts on which of that series of Horror games that you think is best,
and what games you should get after Arkham Horror, if any.
Arkham Horror has been with us for many years now and we have played it quite a lot. It is not so much a game in the true sense as it is a ride. You do not make a lot of real descisions in it. None the less we love it and we actually said yesterday that it still has a few games left in it.

Eldritch Horror is a quicker, more streamlined "version". It is not as engaging yet, but since we only have played it four or five times I am sure we will grow to like it nearly as much as we do AH. The rule book for EH is stellar, while for AH it is ... less so. So far we still feel a bit more limitied in our actions. The combat is better though.

I say you should play the shit out of AH before going anywhere else, but since you will not listen to that advice ( :P ) I will say that maybe EH is a bit too simillar to AH to be really wrth having both. Horror is not my main genre in board games even though we own a few. If you are into Co-ops and have yet to try Ghost Stories, then you should do that. Be aware though that the rule book to that game might very well be the worst one around.

An alternative is Mansions of Madness. It is "one versus many" and thus not a true co-op, but rather okay anyway. Get the big expansion for it (Call of the Wild) which will really help the game play out.

Those are pretty much the horror games worth mentioning, that I own. Gloom is fine, but is starting to get cumbersome and clogged down with expansions.

Written in some haste as gaming friends are arriving! :)
