Other Games / Top 10 - Poll #4
« on: May 07, 2017, 11:15:34 AM »
If you've been following Carcassonne Central lately, you'll know I've been collecting nominations for the Carcassonne Fan's top 10 games (which are not Carcassonne).  Who better than to ask than you, members of the largest Carcassonne Community!

Nominations are now closed, with a whopping ~166 gaming franchises chosen by you all.  But that does leave us with a difficult question....Which are the top 10 games!

To be clear, I'm not going to attempt to rank all the games, just find those top 10 games we all enjoy.

I'll cut to the chase:  I've grouped the games up randomly into batches of ~20 games.  Every voter has 3 votes they may cast against any games.

You have 7 days to vote, voting will close and The top 2-3 games will be moved into the next knock-out round.  The other games, will be left forgotten.  Hopefully this will help us determine which games are our most favourite.

Here is today's poll - which will close on the 14th May.

Don't vote hastily though, now is the time to persuade others to cast their votes wisely and back your game!

We're running the 3rd Poll in parallel, with some days over-lap; both are in progress at the same time!

Other Games / International Tabletop Day 2017
« on: April 29, 2017, 12:28:12 PM »
Today is International Tabletop Day.  Some sort of event, involving some guy from Star Trek: Next Generation and boardgames.  I'm not sure precisely.

The plan
This morning started like any other, expect my wife started a boardgaming conversation with me.  She asked:  "What's all this Pandemic that people keep raving about, I hear about it all the time?".  I confess to never having played it, but new the premise and explained it was co-operative, which is a mechanic of games she likes (see my reviews of: 5 Minute Dungeon, Escape - The Temple..etc).  I found a video from The Rules Girl which managed to do a concise job.

It just so happened that Rules of Play host an annual event in Cardiff that runs all day, so thought it might be an opportunity to head to the city and play some of those games which: have been mentioned, are on my list, wanted to give a go.

The day started at 10am, but we arrived just before noon.  The place was already pretty full, but essentially: There's a few stalls, a reasonable library of games and lots and lots and lots of tables....and a bar.

Image Courtesy of the Angel Hotel

Games we played:
Onitama
I was quite impressed with the games library, lots of classics you would expect like Carcassonne, but also quite a few newer games like Cthulhu Wars & Ghostel made by a local publisher.  We spent a few minutes getting our orientation then grabbed Onitama and found a table:

Each player has 4 pawns, 1 master pawn and 2 animal cards, which dictate the movement of the pawn.  On their turn they must move a pawn and swap the used animal card with a communal one.  You win by capturing the opponent's master pawn, or by getting your master pawn onto the square your opponent's master pawn was on.

I used to play chess a bit as a child, I was never very good. But most of the game felt like those occasions in chess, where neither player could be bothered to see who won after you're both left with 4 pawns each.  The estimate for the game is 15 minutes....after 35 minutes of going round and around, I decided to make a bold move which allowed my wife to win the game but stealing my throne.

It was around 12:40 at this stage, so decided to go into Cardiff-proper for some lunch.  I had a brie & bacon quiche with sauteed potatoes if anyone is interested....very nice too.  This was followed by quite a bit of shopping.

Targi
We got back to the venue around 3pm and I grabbed Targi.  I've heard nothing but good things about this game.  This is usually means I won't like it out of principle.  The rules were a little verbose for our liking, but after about 2 turns, we got the rhythm going.  Boy does it have a rhythm.  For a worker-placement I definitely felt there was more interaction that normal, because the varying actions and goods and the tight board make it feel dynamic. I realized I was cheating about half way through the game, which must have given me an upper hand.  I turned a blind eye when my wife realized she did something similar later on, so I hoped it would average out.

At about 3:50pm I realized I'd parked my car for too long, so had to run back to put some more money in the machine...which was fine except I left my key in my coat back at the venue...sigh...

4:10 got back to play the final move of our game.  I forced an early end buying a Tribe card.  Final score was 72 vs 79.  Which was pretty close considering my blunder.  I really really enjoyed this game.  I liked that it only took 60minutes like the box suggested. I liked the action selection mechanism.  I liked that I didn't feel like it was a resource swabble, a lot of these sorts of games feel constrictive because you're always 1-bean short of a accomplishing dinner; but this wasn't the case.

Jaipur
Time for one more game before we called it a day:  Jaipur.  This is another game I've only heard great things about.  I know Rich_the_Fish likes this game.  We read the rules...easy.  Basically you're collecting resources and trying to buy certain types of goods.  When first purchasing goods, the value is high, but later on, after a lot have been bought, the prices are low.  Knowing when to end the game is important to, which is done when 3 goods are depleted.

My wife won both games, quite easily - she's pretty crafty.  She really liked it because it played quickly (about 10-15 minutes) and it wasn't overly complicated.  I'd certainly be looking out for this.

Summary
It was about 4:30pm, so time to head home (we needed to do food shopping too :/); a bit of a shame because they stay open until 10pm!  I have to say the atmosphere was great, quite busy, but just enough tables for everyone.  We also saw D&D classes being run in the main foyer too. I think there were some game demos being run, but the tables were pretty busy.  We did come away with a few freebies:

Which meant we just had time to collect a few games before leaving.  Targi was a must and a great success in my opinion.  But we couldn't leave without coming away with what we went in for:

Thanks to Rules of Play and all their staff for a very successful boardgaming day.  I'll look forward to visiting again and trying some more games on the TODO list soon!

General / Pimping your Wood Poll
« on: April 19, 2017, 06:03:50 AM »
With the introduction of 'The Circus' / 'Under The Big Top' a full core meeple set consists of 20 meeple!

Base Game (new edition): 8 standard meeples, 1 abbot
Inns & Catherdrals: 1 Big meeple
Traders & Builders: 1 Builder, 1 Pig
Abbey & Mayor: 1 mayor, 1 wagon , 1 Barn
Hills & Sheep: 1 Shepherd
Under the Big Top: 1 Ringmaster
The Messengers: 1 Messenger
The Robbers: 1 Robber
& 1 Phantom

So my question is: What other components do you use when playing Official Carcassonne expansions?  And what better way that to ask you than a Forum Poll?

You're able to select more than one thing, so let us know what you do!

Just to be clear - I'm interested in how you pimp Official Expansion of Carcassonne.  Perhaps we can have another poll about fan-expansions very soon.

Do you use wooden tokens for Trade Goods (Wine,Grain,Cloth) rather than the chits?
Do you pimp your Game Structures (Bridges, Tower blocks, Ferries, Big Top)?
Do you use custom Tokens for The King & Robber Baron tiles?
Do you use custom Meeple for those special-meeple:  Fairy, Dragon, Mage, Witch, Count, Teacher?

Perhaps you just use the core meeple and don't make any modifications?

Have a vote above and let us know what you do for your Official Carcassonne Expansions.

..also Did I miss anything?

Other Games / Sagrada
« on: April 18, 2017, 02:07:47 PM »
It came today, so it hit the table this evening.

Rules:
I'd not had chance to learn/play the game first to explain it, so just read the rules out of the book. Even though it is quite simple, knowing how to explain or start the game, was hard.  I'm sure it would be easier next time.

Basically, there's some public and private objectives.  You have some Tool Cards you can spend favours on to manipulate things.
Each turn a player draws (n+1) dice from the bag and roll them. You perform a snake draft and any left over dice are chucked on the round-marker-track.  Your first die has to be placed on the edge/corner, subsequent dice are played adjacent.  Dice which are orthogonal cannot be of the same colour or number.  You score points at the end based on the objectives -points for gaps.

Components:
You get a bag with 90 coloured dice in it and the favour tokens are nice glass beads.
The art work is very colourful, but the card stock is pretty thin; I'd have preferred this was a little thicker, but there's not much shuffling.

Player Interaction:
Not much really, only hate drafting, but we were too busy trying to work out optimal placements.  It's a typical, short-length friendly Euro affair.

Theme:
If you liked stained glass windows and dice: you're in for a winner.  If you dis-like either of these: go play something else.

Our Game:
The start of the game is pretty difficult; I made effective use of the Tool cards that let you manipulate stuff, when I noticed the Column  Colour Variety card was probably the easiest thing to score points against.  We both started with 'easy' windows.
I ended up scoring 47 points.  If I got a Blue 6 at any time during the game, I'd have scored another: 19 points!
My wife misunderstood the rule about orthogonality; so started off really badly.  She also forgot about the private card half way through too.

Last Thoughts:
It's a filler for me; it only took about 15-20minutes to play (which is a plus), but I didn't feel much challenge, there's plenty of room to do what you want, until the end game where occasionally we took dice we needed from each other.  I did think the interactions could have been tighter.  It probably makes for a good solo experience, which I look forward to trying.

Other Games / Baseball Highlights 2045
« on: April 08, 2017, 08:03:47 AM »
Quote
If you don't particularly like baseball, or thinking about playing a baseball board-game isn't something you look forward to.  Don't let Baseball Highlights 2045 (BH2045) put you off investigating this deckbuilder.

I'd heard several reviews telling exactly the same as above and I do like some deck building games.  At Spiele'16 I got the game's designer (Mike Fitzgerald) to attempt to explain the rules to me in 30-seconds before playing a few rounds of the game.
DanisThirsty was watching too and will attest that:
a) He wasn't great at explaining the rules to his game to a Brit who knows less about Baseball than Rounders.
b) He also gave me one too few cards, so I was at a significant disadvantage.  :(y)

Even this didn't deter me though.  I picked it up and we finally managed to get it onto the table to play, so thought I would share the experience and some thoughts.

The game's deck is made up of card which represent baseball players, or rather the effect the baseball player has on the game; like the name of the game suggests, highlights of the game.  Less baseball already  :(y)

The game is set in the year 2045, a future where Robots and Cyborgs play baseball with 'Naturals' to make the game more interesting.
Improving something that wasn't interesting before can't be a bad thing!

I don't like regaling all the rules which you can find else where; but quite simply the game starts with a starter-deck of 15 cards and you're going to play several mini-games (or innings) in a best of 7.  Each inning consists of a play of the 6 cards you've drawn from your deck.  The cards can have two effects:  an Immediate Action, which resolves as soon as you play it & Hit Boxes which are your threats.  A card played is your defense from threats and also the grounds for your threat against the other player.  This leads to a to-and-fro until all the cards are played.  There's a lot more too this, but don't want to draw out a long convoluted example you can find on a video.

Once the game is over, the cards you played are used to purchase new/better cards and you're forced to relegate a player into the minor-leagues so you keep you 15 card hand.  This can force you to make difficult decisions!

Hopefully you're still with me here!  It can all get quite exciting at times.

Components:

Lots of high quality cards and some lovely White/Blue/Red Pawns which represent the different speed of runners.
I really like the player mats because they are double-sided.  Each side has a Left and Right handed version of the player mat.  It's unnecessary but a nice touch.
The box is far too big for it's content...looking forward to expansions here....
The box's insert is a typical Eagle-Gryphon Game affair: (spacers/room for components), room for cards with inserts.  EEG are known for their high-quality production, they really are a step above average.

Here are a selection of cards, with the nice pawns.

Rules:
They can be a little fiddly at times, but the game has recently gone into it's 3rd edition of rules, which has made a lot of things much clearer.  It didn't take long to get them under control.
There is now a very good FAQ and Reference Sheet as well as a guided-play-through with lots of examples.
The rules also come with dozens of variants which can extend or reduce the length of the game.  There are also solo/3&4 player variants supported with the base-game box.  Tournament play is out-lined too. The solo play looks very straightforward too.
There's not much room for Analysis Paralysis either, usually there are only a few options:  Defend or make a good Offense - I always like balancing these things.

Player Interaction:
As I said above: players are attacking and blocking each other.  For me there's nothing more pleasing than watching your opponent playing a card which cancels your previous attack and then aggressively threatens to score.  You realize there's no hope for you winning now.  That is until, you remember your On-Deck Reserve Card:  'Reduces All Hits by one Base' which can cancel the effects.  Your saved....for now anyway!  Was that all a ploy to make you play your last defensive card?
The card handling is interesting too, when you buy a new card it goes onto your line-out so will appear in your next game.  Which means you know one card your opponent has.  There are some interesting mechanisms for removing cards from your deck, or hiding them on the On-Deck.

Theme:
As I alluded to before I don't like baseball.  Neither does my wife.  Nor did she like the artwork...she found it boring.  I quite like the artwork, all the player cards are unique and they all seem to have character.  Either way, we found yourselves deeply engrossed in the game, trying to determine the best play.
I quite like the tongue in cheek dystopian world where Naturals are forced to keep their game alive against far superior technology.
Or where humans have been augmented to pitch faster balls to beat Robots designed to be heavy hitters.  It has little to no baring over the game player, but certain cards effect one of the types of player.

Our Game:

We made a mistake for our first play - we played 3-mini games to:
i) get a feel for the start decks
ii) Work out some rules
iii) work out who goes first for the World Series.

In hindsight, this extended the game by about 35%.  We'd have played much quicker if we :  Just had 3 buy-rounds without the mini-games and then started (best of 7).
Our games were really close.  One aspect I really like is the first few innings you're deck is scoring 2 or 3 runs to win.  But by our last game we were scoring 8 or 9 and threatening far more! Our game went to extra-innings 3-times, which happens when a game ends in a tie,  players must draw 3 more cards and play them to continue the game!  Seeing the deck developing with better players as the games go on is really pleasing.  There's something likable about seeing 'Wiffle' come out of the stand: threatening 3-singles knowing your arch-nemesis is there to block their attack.  This can happen 3 or 4 times during a game.
Even though we went on for 10 mini-games to determine the victor: my wife smashed me.  The final game went to Extra-Innings and with that she scored 2 more runs.  I had hoped it would go on for one more inning, but it wasn't to be!

Last Thoughts:
This game is an anomaly for me.  I didn't have the best introduction to it, and it's about baseball...really that should be enough for me to leave it on the shelf.  But I'm drawn to the solid mechanics, the elegant play and the deck development.

The game has recently completed a 2-player-only kickstarter, which is worth looking at if you're interested.  It's safe to say this is probably my favourite deck-building game.  The interaction is far better than Dominion and watching your runners make it round the bases, without getting picked off, is really pleasing!  I'm looking forward to getting my hands on some expansions which add a lot more cards to the deck!

Go WIFFLE!

Anything Else / Travel Pack Contest - The Kickstarter Kicker
« on: January 29, 2017, 02:55:41 PM »
I thought there might be a few friends here who would be interested in this.  I've been pretty busy in January with this little project.

Over on BGG, there has been a small 'Travel Pack Contest' featuring people's attempts to reduce the size of their games so they can travel with them.  I decided to take part - You can see my entry here.

For me: travel boxes need to be small - crammed to the brim, with a diverse range of games and contain a copy of Carcassonne.

Rather than repeat myself and show you everything you can see on BGG, I'll just draw attention to the bits of the box I'm most pleased with:

1) The Box:

2)  3cm Carcassonne + The Tower Print and Play:

3) Santorini

4) Tak

5) Haru Ichiban

6) 7 Wonders Duel

7) (Your Name Here) & The Argonauts

8)Print and Play Potion Explosion

9) Print and Play Conquest of the Skies

10)Print and Play And Then We Held Hands

11) GIPF

12)2 Kings

13) Kokono

What I'm really happy about, is having Printed some of my own games, I think I might have kicked the Kickstarter Habit - or at least be more inclined to only back Print and Play option when it is available on Kickstarter.

Not every game could be printed at home, due to the large number of components and sure: they don't look as good and they look a little rough around the edges, but I'm able to scale components down and reprint them then they need replacing.  I can throw or give them away the game, if I dont enjoy them too.  I'd definitely recommend any of the Print and Plays I've included above.

I believe the voting for the contest winner starts on the 1st February, so I may be back in a few days to request everyone takes a look at the entries (and votes for mine  O0, if they wish) if they're a BGG user!

Reviews & Session Reports / An Evening with Rich The Fish
« on: January 29, 2017, 02:35:34 PM »
On Tuesday Rich the Fish was visiting Bristol, which is relatively close to where I live.  We arranged to meetup for some dinner in "Three Brothers Burgers" and then head to "Chance & Counters" near the Christmas Steps.  We visited when they first opened, so we knew what to expect.

I had Mega Burger, which was aptly named.  :(y) :(y)

We started with some Lanterns:

I lost both games, the second because I didn't use a pair of switchy tokens when I had the chance.  I honestly was confussled most of these games, wondering how I knew which colour was most important, because a bunch of random unknown tiles had been removed from the deck.  The games didn't feel long enough to get into.  I'll stick with Carcassonne.

Next up was Dominion.  Rich The Fish had never played before, so opened up the 'First Game' and did a terrible job of explaining the rules.  :(y)
I'm not a Dominion Expert, but I love the engine building aspects.  My engine was pretty cumbersome and I had several hands where all 3 of my Smithies were drawn at once.  Rich was very close behind, but I managed to pull through:

Rich showed me how to play Port Royale.  I really liked this game, I liked how the cards were also money.  I made a poor purchase during the mid-game and I felt like It could have gone on a little longer, but Rich was able to close a Trade Deal leaving me with 6 or 7 points:

.

We finished our evening with 2 games of Arboretum.  Rich was able to explain the rules.  This one's a very tight hand management game.  You have to be very observant of the other player and count which cards you've seen.  Neither of those things I'm very good at.  I went all in on the last round and risked everything on an 'Oak' path.  It's safe to say I won't be winning the Chelsea Flower Show 2017 - that award goes to Rich!

Thanks again for finding time to catch up and play a few games Rich - I hope we get to do it again soon!

Merit to you for suggesting it!   :(y) :(y)
