Many of you have heard (some of you even participated, and one of you won ::) ) of Carcassonne Action-Quiz, which took place during amazing Carcassonne Anniversary Event in Essen this year. I want to offer to Carcassonne Central community a possibility to participate in this Quiz with slightly changed rules:
1. Every Carcassonne Central member can participate, but the prize can be claimed only by a person, who didn't take part in actual Action-Quiz in Essen.
2. The "platform" for the Quiz will be our chat room (http://sydby.com/carcassonne/irc/index.html). Every participant will answer the Quiz questions privately to me, in separate chat window.
3. Players will have exactly 10 seconds to read a question and to provide an answer: A, B or C. Unlike from Action-Quiz, this won't be a knock-out competition: correct answers will be accumulated and the player with the most correct answers will win the Quiz. There are 30 questions overall.
4. The winner of the Quiz will get a prize from me - 2 Russian promo tiles ("Baga Yaga Hut" and "Bogatyr").
Carcassonne Central Online Quiz will take place on Sunday, 4th of December 2016 at 21:00 CET. Please, answer here if you are planning to take part, so if you will be a little bit late, we would wait for you for at least 5 minutes :)
P.S. If many of you won't be able to take part due to inappropriate date or time, please, propose your comfort time and I will see what I can do.

Hi MrNumbers,
I will take part in this CarcC online quiz.
-
Great idea MrNumbers, I'm in! (though if I'm not in the right place at the right time please start without me)
-
Thanks for hosting, but my father's birthday is that day and we already have plans with him. Maybe next time.
-
I'm in although I know I have no chance. This is a great idea.
Thanks
-
I'm in. I'll try my best to post again if I can't make it.
-
What a great idea. I was lucky enough to play at Essen, so best of luck everyone. Hopefully MrNumbers will keep a log of the chat so I can see what happens. I'm travelling on Sunday, so won't be able to watch :(
-
Great idea MrNumbers! Unfortunately for my participation in the quiz, but fortunately in any case, I am spending Sunday afternoon/evening with Chooselife at a Portuguese football match in Estoril, followed by sushi. So I will miss it but I wish the participants the best of luck!
-
Sounds cool. I can't tell now, because on weekends, we are very spontaneous with the bunch of my wifes family, but I hope to participate in that quiz!
-
So many people (dirk2112, Decar, jungleboy) can't participate due bad timing :(
I am considering to reschedule it for next Sunday (11th of December). If other participants agree with it - so be it.
-
I'm OK with Dec. 11.
-
Sounds ok. No problem.
-
OK, then Online Quiz is officially rescheduled to December 11, 2016. Time is the same - 21:00 CET. No further rescheduling is planned.
-
Very interested. I will do my best to be there.

My calendar is clear, so I will be there. Now I better not stink it up or I will feel bad that you moved it because I was one of the few that couldn't make the first one.
-
I will be there too.
-
Just a reminder! :D
Tomorrow, 21:00 CET :red-meeple:
-
I will try to be there

For now list of participants looks like this:
kettlefish
danisthirty
dirk2112
Jesusgcas
ny1050220
jungleboy (?)
Chuck
Rosco
Did you know that only 9 questions were asked during Action-Quiz in Essen? Other 21 question were never asked! Some of them include pure guessing, IMO :)
-
There were only 2 participants tonight, but we still decided to run the Quiz just for fun and I asked 15 questions (out of 30). Kettlefish won from Jungleboy - 13:12 :D
I want to run it one more time in different day, but I don't know particular date for now.
-
I could not participate because it was my son's birthday party, I hope next time! Congrats kettlefish!
-
Sorry, forgot about the Quiz, because my son has a troubleful sleep.... :(
Congrats to kettlefish!!
-
Sorry, I totally forgot about this... was stuck in snow this afternoon.
-
So sorry! Today didn't go very well and I found myself driving around at that time.
-
I could not participate because it was my son's birthday party, I hope next time! Congrats kettlefish!
Please wish him happy birthday from me too! It was fun playing with him when we all had pizza that time... :)

Hello!
I want to try again and make this Quiz happen as intended for the first time.
Rules (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=2997.msg44712#msg44712) remain the same, except the following changes:
1. The prize can be claimed only by a person, who didn't take part in actual Action-Quiz in Essen and in previous Online Quiz (yes, jungleboy, this is about you :P)
4. The winner will choose one prize from the following:
- Besiegers
- German Castles
- German Monasteries
- Windroses (HiG edition)
- Japanese Buildings
- Carcassonne Demo
- 2 Russian promo tiles ("Baga Yaga Hut" and "Bogatyr")
All prizes are shrink-wrapped/unpunched (except Russian tiles, of course).
If we will have more than 10 participants, then we will have two winners, and both can choose a prize.
I want to run Quiz on Sunday, 18th of June 2017 at 21:30 CET. Please, answer here if you are planning to take part.
As it was previous time, if some of you (or many) won't be able to take part due to inappropriate date or time, you can propose your comfort time and I will see what I can do.
I hope this time we will have a real battle! :D
Participants due date:
- BigBoss
- Willem88
- glh510
- txema25
- Just a Bill
- thodekey
- cletus81

I meant next Sunday, 18th of June, not tomorrow. Is it good for you?
P.S. Just noticed that I am "Duke Chevalier" now :D
-
I wouldn't mind participating, but I'm in California, won't be off work until approx 17:00 pst. I don't know what time that is for you. I'll be off on Wednesday & Thursday though if that is easier to plan a reasonable time to participate.
-
I'm in California, won't be off work until approx 17:00 pst. I don't know what time that is for you.
California is in PDT now, so this is 9 hours behind CET. So, Quiz is planned on 18th June, 12:30pm PDT.
-
June 18th is Father's Day. I have a ton of family stuff to do that day, but thanks anyway!
Good luck to all!
-
Hmm. I have no clue what kind of questions to be answered, but hey lets try :-)
-
I want to take part of the quiz, MrNumbers
thanks
-
I would like to participate.
Thank you so much for doing this, MrNumbers. I'm pretty desperate for the Besiegers, and any chance at all is very much appreciated!
-Bill
-
Thanks for offering to run this quiz again MrNumbers :(y) (and also for your generosity with that wonderful list of prizes!)
I would like to join in, even though I have seen some of the questions before (but didn't win!), however this Sunday doesn't work for me either as I will be spending the day with family for Father's Day.
Good luck to everyone taking part! :)
-
even though I have seen some of the questions before
So I'm sure we'll all get to preview those particular questions then, right? ;)
-

Only if you can go back in time to Essen last year.
PS - I definitely recommend that you do this if you do happen to have a time machine.
-
mind you...if you had a time machine you could go back to Essen and take part in the quiz the first time!
-
If my time machine were working reliably, I would just go back and buy the Besiegers from cundco ... then I could take the quiz solely for fun, rather than trying to complete my collection. :)
-
Though if you did that....you'd not have to build a time machine.....so you couldn't go back... hmm
-
Time machines... mmm... my favorite topic :D But, enough off-topics :)
One additional rule for the Quiz - if there will be less than 5 people participating, Quiz will be rescheduled for another day.
-
I would like to join as well allthough i think my chances are slim. Sunday evening would be allright for me.
-
Hello, since I wasn't in Essen last October, I don't have any idea about what kind of questions I have to answer: but it sounds funny, so I want to try! :D
-
Ugh. With the time zone shift, this would stick the contest on Monday morning at 8:30 in New Zealand, which won't work for me. I was hoping the contest was set for Saturday. Surprisingly, there are actually three items on your list I do not own (Carc Demo, Russia tiles, Japanese temples). If the timing needs to be rejigged, I am interested, but I won't force the entire contest to be moved just for me. O:-)

I could shift the Quiz on Saturday's evening, if:
1. already signed-up participants won't mind;
2. more members will participate (for example, dirk2112, danisthirty).
-
Competition? I´m in!
-
Hello,
Saturday won't work for me but if i'm the only one, i'm willing to leave my place in favour of whaleyland.
-
Just a suggestion, but with so many great prizes, perhaps you could run two smaller contests on different days, so contestants have the best chances of winning something?

Is the quiz still on? I'm still planning to participate, but if it's getting moved or canceled then I need to know so I can re-plan my day.
Thanks,
-BIll
-
Yes, the Quiz is still on. But remember the additional rule: it there will be less than 5 participants, the Quiz will be rescheduled.
-
Yep, I remembered ... and that rule makes a lot of sense (not good to invest the time and effort, and burn up a prize, if enough people can't benefit).
Thanks for the quick answer!
-
Unfortunately I won't make it in time this evening. Sorry. ????

Is there a number of attendees? Wount stay awake if not needed

Now there are 7 participants registered. If all will show up, everything is fine :)
-
I am looking in the chatroom.
-
I am attempting to join the chatroom (http://sydby.com/carcassonne/irc/index.html) but it just keeps saying "Connecting." Do I need to pre-register somewhere?
-
No, it took a while for me to get in to, but you should be able to join in just by following the link
-
Thanks, I'm in now. Yeah, it is really slow.
-
Here come the results :D
This time Online Quiz had a success, we had 7 participants! Unfortunately, some participants didn't show up, but some others did instead.
The Quiz took exactly 1 hour (for 30 questions), which I think is OK. Some questions could be answered only by guessing (IMO), but still there were some interesting facts about Carcassonne as a game and as a city, and Hans im Glück as a company.
And now the main part - the numbers (after I double-checked the answers I entered in Excel) :D
Willem88 - 18 right answers from 30 questions.
glh510 - 19/30.
Dragonlord - 20/30.
Just a Bill - 21/30.
Leven - 24/30.
And...
We have two winners!
cletus81 - 25/30.
Dirk2112 - 25/30.
Congratulations!!! :(y) :(y) :(y)
Both of you can choose a prize (write it here) and, please, send me your postal address by PM.
Thanks everyone who took part! I think I will repeat this for other members in the future ;)
-
Not bad for the first time, cool for the winners :black1-meeple:
-
A hearty congratulations to cletus and Dirk!
And a hearty thank-you to MrNumbers ... or after today's A-B-C quiz, should I perhaps call you MrLetters?
-
Wow, I didn't expect to win, I thought 25 couldn't be enough! :))
My first pick for the prize is Windroses (is it the rare version with N. W. S. E. right?);
in case Dirk2112 chooses the same prize. I can opt for the Besiegers.
Many thanks to MrNumbers for running this online quiz!
-
Wow this was unexpected ;D. Leven and Dragonlord were so quiet during the event, that I thought they had it in the bag.
Can I have the Russian tiles?
Also, thanks again MrNumbers for hosting such a fun event!
-
First time, I've used IRC since before facebook, and I've guessed some answers very badly ;D
-
And a hearty thank-you to MrNumbers ... or after today's A-B-C quiz, should I perhaps call you MrLetters?
You are welcome! Still I love numbers more than letters ;D

25 of 30 is very good result, taking into account that some questions included pure guessing :)
Yes, it is HiG edition, with NWSE. It's yours! :D

They are yours! :D
-
Well done everyone :(y)
-
That was fun! I guess im too restricted to carcassonne alone, as i didnt know much about the spin-offs and HiG, so those questions were a disaster hahaha.
Im looking forward to playing it again sometime!
-
That was fun! I guess im too restricted to carcassonne alone.
So am I. Considering that, I'm quite surpised that I had 24 correct answers. I had no idea about most of the questions about spin-offs but I had a few lucky guesses.
Congrats to cletus81 and Dirk2112, and thanks to MrNumbers for organizing this fun quiz.
-
thanks to MrNumbers for organizing this fun quiz.
You are welcome! Just one more lucky guess, and we would have 3 winners! :D
BTW, the prizes are sent to the winners. Expect a postman soon :)
On a side note, I want to find out, who is potentially interested in this Quiz in the future, given that the prizes are the same. For now it is without certain date, just the potential participants (whaleyland, for example ;)). When we know the amount I can plan to re-run the Quiz for other members.
-
Yeah, sorry for disappearing like that. Got some bad news on Friday and kind of forgot entirely about this quiz. In any case, I am still interested and still need the Russia expansion tiles, so keep me informed. Maybe PM me if I don't respond after a set time. I try to follow all the posts I can, but sometimes forget to follow ones I actually posted on. Oops!
-
BTW, the prizes are sent to the winners. Expect a postman soon :)
Great! Now I can add Latvia to the countries I have acquired Carcassonne tiles from. :(y) I wonder what my postman thinks.
Thanks again!
-
Thanks for your efforts and generosity MrNumbers!
+1 merit from me :)
-
Since MrNumbers would like to run this quiz again for different people, we probably should not spoil any answers here.

I decided to delete your post so late comers might not see the answer. Hope that's ok! You can post it again after MrNumbers says it's clear :(y)

Thanks, Decar! I was thinking what to do with that post, but maybe deleting it was a good decision :(y)
-
I did wonder about moving it somewhere else then moving it back later...but i went for the easy option. I'm interested in knowing the answer too, a good debate topic for the week ahead :(y) :(y)

Hello,
In the nearest future I will repeat this Quiz to those who didn't participate in the previous ones. The date isn't set yet, but we will discuss it when at least 5 participants will sign up.
I will publish the rules once again, so they should be clear to everyone:
1. Every Carcassonne Central member can participate, but the prize can be claimed only by a person, who didn't take part in actual Action-Quiz in Essen and in previous runs of Online Quiz.
2. The "platform" for the Quiz will be our chat room.
Approximate duration of the event is 1 hour.
4. The winner(s) will choose one prize from the following:
- Besiegers
- German Castles
- German Monasteries
- Windroses (HiG edition)
- Japanese Buildings
- Carcassonne Demo
- 2 Russian promo tiles ("Baga Yaga Hut" and "Bogatyr")
- Spiel'16 tile
- Mini Expansion (Games Quarterly #11)
- The Count of Carcassonne
- The River I (2001 edition), lightly played
All prizes are shrink-wrapped/unpunched (except Russian tiles and Spiel'16, of course).
If we will have more than 10 participants, then two winners will be selected, and both can choose a prize.
5. If less than 5 people will "attend" the event, Quiz will be rescheduled for another day.
Potential participants:
- whaleyland :(y)
- Amorpheus :(y)
- Caciej :(y)
- Mikeagan :(y)
- ny1050220 ???
- Hproctor1478 :(y)
- BigBoss :(y)
-
Yep I'm in!
-
I'm in. Best hours for me are weekends, 9:00am-midnight NZST. Otherwise, I can do evenings during the week, 7:00pm-midnight.
-
If it lands at a time I'm available then I'm in otherwise it is what it is.
I am available 7-10 Pacific Time every day and am off work Wednesday & Thursday.
-
I confirm my participation :D
-
I seriously plan to attend, but it's contingent on the time.
So I guess I need to stay tuned for more news? ;)
-
I seriously plan to attend, but it's contingent on the time.
So I guess I need to stay tuned for more news? ;)
Yes, stay tuned! ;) But it would be better if you write your availability times (days of week and times of day).
The same applies to Amorpheus and Caciej. After everyone will say their times, I can plan the date which suits all of us C:-)
-
Can't do overnight (12:00am to 6:30am Eastern Daylight Time, GMT-5), but rest of time should be doable, especially this coming week.
-
Well, it's really tricky to accommodate me, so I didn't even try last time.
Usually I'm free 19.00 to 23.59 EDT on weekdays. Well, EDT actually means GMT -4. GMT is not equivalent to UK time according to Google. Anyway, it's now 17.10 here, just for reference.
Usually I'm free all day over the weekend, but occasionally I'm busy in the lab. And that is very hard to predict.
If you try to accommodate people in the Americas, I guess then we are pretty much gonna have it at the weekends. In that case, you might want to decide on a date and time first then I'll try to work around my schedule and let you know whether I can make it or not.
Does that sound OK?
-
No our clocks go forward +1hour in the spring. We're operating on BST - British Summer Time at the moment.
-
I think perhaps I may do any other time than monday 6pm-11pm, wednesday 6pm-midnight, thursday 5pm-11pm (CEST).
-
Well, I'm aware that the UK does observe daylight saving time/summer time. My understanding is that GMT does not move, which is kinda of important for people who needs to work the satellite data.
Here's one reference, https://greenwichmeantime.com/. I just don't want to confuse people with the time zone I'm living in. :)
-
I entered all the calendar data into Excel and have got this.
Taking into account very wide timezones spread (from UTC +12 to UTC -7) the only available times are:
Saturday 5:00am or 6:00am and Sunday 5:00am and 6:00am (in my time zone - GMT +2).
This means that me and Caciej need to get up early in one of these days.
I am ready for this, if everyone REALLY will be there into that time.
Now we have to decide, which day it will be, Sunday or Saturday. At least 6:00am, please ::)
-
If my Apple World Clock is accurate, 6am in Latvia is 11pm for Eastern US (EDT). I can do either day; probably prefer Friday but both should work.
Should be fun. Not that I have any chance against the competition, including people as up to date as Whaleyland, who provides excellent element of the week analysis. My main Carc days were 2009-2013. Hard to get others to play now. So expect me to come in last.
-
5am-6am in Latvia is 4am-5am in Poland....
If its the only option then Please let it be 6am (Latvia) sunday :'(
-
If its the only option then Please let it be 6am (Latvia) sunday :'(
Are you still taking people for the quiz? I am EST if I am allowed to participate I would love to:)

Are we talking about this coming weekend?
If so, then either day is the same for me. I will be travelling in Chicago, but I should be able to make it.
-
I'm honestly not certain what 0500 (5:00am) GMT+2 equals in NZST. I think my time zone is GMT+12, which would mean I add 10 hours, right? So that would be 1500 (3:00pm) on Saturday? If so, that works for me either day. I am free all this coming weekend.
-
So if I'm (California) pacific standard time, then I subtract 10 hours? So 6am Latvia should be 8pm California time?
-

On the previous day, yes. That sounds right.
-

Sure, you are in!
So, to eliminate any possible mistakes, I used The World Clock Meeting Planner (https://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/meetingtime.html?day=9&month=7&year=2017&p1=602&p2=137&p3=22&p4=179&p5=48&iv=0) service, and here are the results for Sunday, 9.07.
If everybody is happy with it (sorry, Caciej, I know this is early), then I'll set my alarm clock :)
-
I can confirm this works for me. I have also put in a reminder on my phone for 2:45 pm and a notice on my calendar, and I have cleared it with my partner. So hopefully there will be no hitches!

Good luck everyone!

I am still waiting for Amorpheus, Mikeagan and ny1050220 confirmation.
-
Oh sorry. I should be able to make it. But please feel free to start without me if I'm not online. I think there are still more than 5 participant without me.

Not currently. We have four without you, and are awaiting confirmation from two others.
MrNumbers: Perhaps a PM is in order?

I'm in. Sorry, thought I had confirmed. Set an alarm to make sure I'm there.
-
I will put this in my calendar as July 8, 8pm pacific time. If I understand the date correctly. This works for me.

Yes, the date is correct. Confirmed! :(y)
So, now we have 6 confirmed participants, which means that the event will take place in the declared time (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=2997.msg50905#msg50905). See you!
P.S. If someone wants to join in, you are welcome to do so even without pre-registration :)

Amorpheus and I are at http://sydby.com/carcassonne/irc/index.html (http://sydby.com/carcassonne/irc/index.html) right now. Is that the correct locale?

Now it's time to go to bed ;)

Thanks to all participants! :(y)
Today we had 6 players from completely different parts of the world. Unfortunately we missed Caciej, probably 5am was too much for him :-\
And now - the results!
Questions about spin-offs, especially about Amazonas, were the hardest ones for most of the participants. Probably, they made the difference.
Whaleyland - 18 correct answers out of 30.
BigBoss - 19/30.
Hproctor1478 - 22/30.
Amorpheus - 23/30.
ny1050220 - 23/30.
Mikeagan - 24/30.
Congratulations to Mikeagan! You can choose a prize from the list!
-
Yeah, serious hint for future play-throughs for people: read up on Amazonas before taking the quiz!
I'm not surprised by my bad results, but I am slightly wondering if anybody was looking stuff up on Google during the quiz. After I sent in my answers, I was able to find the answers to five of the questions almost immediately on Google without even needing to click on links. I didn't change my answers, but that would have made a big difference for me. I guess the contest rules weren't clear on that regard.
In any case, good job Mikeagan. You fought hard and won! I bow to your superior knowledge of Amazonas and other random Carcassonne cultural topics.
BigBoss, kind of glad to see you sitting on the bottom end near me. At least I am not the only Carc "pro" to do poorly on this test.

Im so sorry guys, I had very long evening yesterday. I actually woke Up and Turn on the laptop but then fell asleep.... :(
Congratulations to you all and the winner :)

Congrats Mikeagan! Thanks again to Mr Numbers for the fun quiz. You may want to consider stating a rule at the beginning that none of the answers should be googled or otherwise researched while the quiz is taking place. Can't enforce it of course, but put everyone on the honor system. I tried to answer each question quickly so there would be no doubt about looking up answers. My 10 minutes of research before the quiz did come in handy though. I should have included Amazonas in that research!

Also wanted to mention a website my kids use that may work well for quizzes like this. It's called kahoot.it. You just need to give everyone a code and we could all connect and see how many answers were right/wrong, without showing who got it wrong, and with a timer for each question. I think it tracks scores for the host but not sure. You'd probably still want to have the chat room for discussion while the quiz is going on. Not sure it would work (not clear if it works well with each person on remote devices) but thought I'd mention it in case it's easier for Mr Numbers.

Congrats Mikeagan! It was a fun quiz. Echoing from above, I didn't expect to know so much about Amazonas, so it's probably a good time to start with the spin-offs. Thanks again to MrNumbers to host the quiz.
-
Congrats Mikeagan! Also Thanks again to MrNumbers for hosting the quiz. I really enjoyed the quiz and apparently I really need to get Amazonas & Gold Rush, I may have done a bit better then emoji code6]

Well done everyone who took part - it looked to be a very close batter for top place!
+1 merit to Mr Numbers for running the contest - and for getting up so early to do it too :(y) :(y)
Is it now safe to discuss the questions - I am still interested to know precisely how many 'spin-offs' there are :)
-
You are welcome, ladies and gentlemen! :D Glad you liked the event ;)

10 seconds rule (Nr. 3) implies that you should answer quickly and shouldn't google the answers. Some participants spent far more than 10 seconds for some answers, but I can't be sure about the reason - in previous run, for example, Just a Bill had terrible Internet connection and that is why answered to the questions with a delay.

Thanks, I'll take a look at this website.

I am sorry for you, Caciej, it was really too early :o

What a close contest. Congrats Mikeagan!
I must say the temptation to run down stairs and grab Amazonas was great >:D, but I didn't do it. Later I asked my wife about the Amazonas question I got wrong and she knew it without hearing the multiple choice questions. I guess she is more observant than I.

I think I'd like the Japanese Monastery's. I will PM my address to you MrNumbers.
I don't own any spin offs, but I've downloaded several manuals and read through them to see if there is any interesting rules that I could integrate into regular Carcassonne. I did look through them before the quiz. But to be honest, I feel like I had quite a few lucky guesses and was pleasantly surprised I won.
As to internet connection, my apartment complex provides WiFi, but it isn't the best and goes in and out sometimes especially between 6pm - 10pm pacific time. I had to refresh the chat page during the quiz once. I can't play online multiplayer games like Starcraft 2 & Civilization 5 without getting booted from games for lost connection, but I can't complain because it's included with the rent.

Because we are an online community, there will always be doubts over whether everyone is "playing fair" whenever we have any kind of competition. And I don't think fairness can ever be guaranteed either. Ultimately, it's good-spirited participation that people respect regardless of who won, and I think most people are aware of this by now...
I was quite impressed to see that 60% correct was the lowest score. I would have been quite pleased if I'd scored that regardless of what the winning score was!
Well done to everyone who took part, and a big thanks (and +1 merit of course) to MrNumbers for going the extra mile yet again to make this quiz happen.

You are guaranteed to get at least one correct even if you don't know anything about Carcassonne. :P
