Title: Carcassonne Mastermind
Post by: quevy on September 02, 2015, 10:30:44 AM
Greetings to all, here is a new contest of Central Carcassonne.

Some of you know the deductive board game Mastermind?
The player must be able to guess a sequence of colors, thanks to a series of predictions and suggestions, a little at a time via exclusion, the solution will come.

For those wishing to learn more, here's the Wikipedia page (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mastermind_(board_game)).

I thought it would be interesting to combine this game with Carcassonne, so that users could play together.

Attached to this post will insert a password protected zip archive, containing a sequence of four tiles in the basic game, they will be positioned according to the normal rules of placement. Road against roads, city against city, fields against fields.

A player will be able to post his prediction every 24 hours, trying to guess the exact order of the tiles and their correct orientation.
All posts will be edited by a moderator.  The edit will add colored meeple under the prediction, they will be the tips to figure out the exact sequence.
Each meeple is a clue, the meeple corresponds to one tile and the color will indicate what is correct and what is incorrect.
The order of the meeple do not correlate with the order of the tiles!
Thus, The first clue can be referred to any one of the 4 tiles. The same for the remaining three clues.

:red-meeple:: One of the Tiles is wrong.
:blue-meeple:: One of the Tiles is correct, but is oriented and positioned incorrectly.
:black1-meeple:: One of the Tiles is correct exact, oriented correctly, but in the wrong position.
:yellow-meeple:: One of the Tiles is correct, oriented incorrectly, but in the correct position.
:green-meeple:: One of the Tile correct, oriented in an exact manner, in exact position.

You can use the images on this
link (http://www.tehill.net/carcassonne/tiles/) or this (http://sydby.com/carcassonne/tiles/external/Index%20of%20_carcassonne_tiles_visual.html) to make your predictions, using this code: [ img ]image link[ /img] (remove the spaces before img and /img).

Important: We will not accept new predictions published before the 24 hours, the topic will be edited and the prediction canceled.

Example:

Sequence to guess:

:red-meeple: :black1-meeple: :blue-meeple:  :green-meeple:

When the sequence it has been guessed, I will make public the password of zip archive, so that everyone can check the original sequence.

Participation in the competition is free, if you really want to do something for the community, you could donate one or two white tiles, they will be used to create awards for the community, tiles gift for tournaments or other initiatives like this one.

And now we come to the most important part, the prize for guessing the correct sequence.
You will receive directly to your home one of the following tiles of your choice:

Mini-Expansion: "Carcassonne - The Festival"
Mini-Expansion: "Carcassonne - The River I"
Mini-Expansion: "Carcassonne - The Besiegers"
Mini-Expansion: "Carcassonne - The Houses"
Mini-Expansion: "Carcassonne - The School"
Mini-Expansion: "Carcassonne - The Compass Rose"
Mini-Expansion: "Carcassonne - Halflings II"
Mini-Expansion: "Carcassonne - The Cloister in Germany"

Now what are you waiting? Take off the foolish predictions!!!

We need a visual gallery list. Takes forever to find the right tile, even if you have a decent knowledge of the names. If I get some free time tonight/tomorrow I could make one based on the list already provided, if anyone else is not up for it.

The tiles prediction must be positioned according to the normal rules of carcassonne to form a row of four tiles.

I'll knock something simple up - and allow the user to click to see the URL to copy; if they don't know they can right click.

Here is the simple list for now with both visual tile and name tile. Simply right-click on a tile and choose "copy url" or similar and paste it between the img-tag in this forum (Mona Lisa icon above).

Well, the sequence was guessed, much earlier than I expected, about to SBRO of putting all on track at the first attempt, guessing, 2 tiles and their position.

The password for those who want to check is "CarcCmaster"

Tonight at the start the second round.

I thought it was reasonable to keep the 24hr clock rolling to give many people a chance to take part. If quevy thinks otherwise then we can change it.   Maybe the next round should start at a different time of the day or there should be a delay for the first results to make sure there's no chance of dan winning again :p

I made a dumb guess on the first round, because I misinterpreted the yellow meeple and mixed up a CRRF with a CFRR. And now the informations are scarce, however, I make the second guess to get the ball rolling:

No one likes to post here - because all are waiting for to be "the last lucky one" who gets a prize.
Perhaps the prizes will come to someone else - randomly - perhaps that would be more fair.
I don't know - but all members who are active here and post their suggestions are important to solve the riddle.

And I think to have the choice to post once all 24 hours is not nice. Perhaps it will run faster if each member is allowed to post once for each round.
Title: Re: Carcassonne Mastermind

I wondered if each player should have their own puzzle.  If they do not solve it in 10 guesses, then it becomes public and anyone can guess (every 12hrs perhaps).

They are quevy's prizes though; so it is up to him, what format the contest should take.

Danisthirty - you have no chance - when you put you mouse arrow on the meeple you are able to read the colour of the meeple.

I just like participating, though I agree the manner in which a prize is rewarded could be a bit fairer :gray-meeple:. Here's a crazy proposal — separate Carcassonne Mastermind subforum, everyone their own topic ;).

Anyway, here's my guess —

(http://www.tehill.net/carcassonne/tiles/90_.CC.2.jpg) (http://www.tehill.net/carcassonne/tiles/270_.C.jpg) (http://www.tehill.net/carcassonne/tiles/270_.LR.jpg) (http://www.tehill.net/carcassonne/tiles/Rr.jpg)

Just to be sure, (http://www.tehill.net/carcassonne/tiles/90_.CFC.2.jpg) and (http://www.tehill.net/carcassonne/tiles/270_.CFC.2.jpg) are considered different orientations, right?

Now that is rather severe.

Yes i think a subforum may be in order. We can always move the topics later.

Yes, the orientations are different. The towers are in different positions.

There are a few improvements that can be made. Some silly fun could be that Decar makes a zip file with the solution and have the correct sequence of tile codes as password. The only issue is how to get the clues, if right, close or wrong etc.

A password could be rrrrfrfrccrrcccc for example. (four road tile, road forest road forest, city city road road, city city city city) I don't know the codes by heart so this is just an example using my code method when I program, the NESW version (North East South West).

Another method would be making this as a script. It will randomly generate four tiles and you can submit a guess and it will return the meeple colours.

I think this should not be done, if you are close to the solution, I can try all the possible solutions using the password and then post the exact solution.

Each player gets his or her very own zip file, but as mentioned, how to give out the clues and thus also keeping count how many tries.

Just to be sure, (http://www.tehill.net/carcassonne/tiles/90_.CFC.2.jpg) and (http://www.tehill.net/carcassonne/tiles/270_.CFC.2.jpg) are considered different orientations, right?
Yes - that are different orientations. That is the reason why I've got the last time a  :yellow-meeple: and not a  :green-meeple: for this tile...
see here: http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=2045.msg28166#msg28166 (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=2045.msg28166#msg28166)
But now I have the  :green-meeple:
see my previous posting.

There are still two tiles which have not found yet...

Thanks Kettlefish, but Decar already explained it and I do understand the rules :gray-meeple:. Perhaps I should have asked a more general question (including e.g. the RFRF tile). Pff, 2½ hours before I can post again.

Hi Decar,
the meeples - are they for my new guess?
Title: Re: Carcassonne Mastermind
Post by: Ailurus on September 06, 2015, 01:49:40 AM
Hmm, at this point I'm getting rather suspicious. In some versions of Mastermind the same colour can be used multiple times — does this also hold for our Carcassonne version (i.e. the same tile can be used multiple times, possibly in different orientations)?

[Edit] Without using duplicate tiles there's only one configuration left, so if the 12h limit is confirmed, I'd like to post it :gray-meeple:

Yes in hindsight, they could have been in a different order and rotated in several ways. Obviously great minds think alike ..etc :)
Title: Re: Carcassonne Mastermind
Post by: Hounk on September 06, 2015, 10:28:39 AM
I did consider a "double tile" solution, and actually suggested one (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=2045.msg28065#msg28065) in the first game (like mentioned before, a dumb one, because I misinterpreted the yellow meeples as indicating a wrong location), however I would have assumed, that no tile should be used more often then in a single Carcassonne Base game. So no problem with a code like this one, even 4x FRFR would be OK, but a solution with 3 CCFF splitter tiles or for example the CCCC twice would seem odd to me.

So for further rounds: are any solutions with multiple eqal tiles OK, or are there limited to what can be found in one base game box?

Attached to this post will insert a password protected zip archive, containing a sequence of four tiles in the basic game, they will be positioned according to the normal rules of placement. Road against roads, city against city, fields against fields.

Yes, that's how I interpreted the rules - a sequence of four tiles in the basic game.

I'd also like to claim the farm with my large meeple and take 4 points for the road my phantom. Thanks!

What does it mean if you don't get any coloured meeples under your guess? :'(

danisthirty,
I think there is no new round.
We need a subforum. It is easier to have for each Carcassonne-Mastermind round an own topic.

And I don't think it is a great idea that all 72 tiles could be used.
I prefer to use only once one of the different 24 tiles. Some of the tiles are so often in the base game. All tiles has 4 directions...

And it is confusing that a tiles like the cross with 4 roads has also 4 directions here.
To solve such riddle is not easy - even if we can post only once or twice a day...

The following new forum area has been created:
