Title: Watermark changes in tiles
Post by: JT Atomico on February 25, 2016, 12:10:00 AM
One of the big topics on the forum recently has been completionism. To take this to the edges, I am interested in which tiles have had changes in their watermarks over the years.

The ones that I know about are:

Expansions originally released with no watermark, but later released with a watermark added
Mini expansions that gained a crown watermark in Count, King & Cult
Versions of The Cult / Shrines & Heretics
Misprints (pictured below)
Other

Note, I have deliberately omitted The River I, since the Big Box 5 reprint changes more than just the watermark and I considered that release to be The River III.

Is that the full list, or am I missing anything?

jungleboy, maybe this could be added towards the end of your completionsim polls? :)

A merit to you - a handy list for any budding completionists.

Thanks Decar :)

By the way, if anyone would like a copy of the misprinted BC&B tile then I have a spare. I would quite like to trade it for a non-misprinted one if possible!

Is there a copy that isn't misprinted. My HiG copy is and so is my Rio Grande. I wonder if Zman has corrected it.

Perhaps not, I had assumed there was because you had included the misprinted one in your list of assorted rare things posted here: http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=2288.msg32337#msg32337

I wonder if it was fixed for Devir's release.  I thought HiG would be fixed, but it seems not.  I've not seen a Z-man printing, I'm some someone will tell us :)

I've just checked my Z-Man Games Bridges, Castles and Bazaars, and it does have the misprinted tile. It's not been corrected, it seems.

Thanks for checking Christopher, merit for you :)

Perhaps no one ever told the publishers! It's quite easy to miss.

Thanks!

I'll be honest, I hadn't noticed until reading this thread and checking!

Well that was disappointing - I believed it had been corrected, because the HiG Complete Tile List had it corrected.  However, I've verified:

Editions all don't include the correction.  It's possible a newer HiG edition doesn't contain the fault, but it seems unlikely.

I also ordered one from Cundco as a spare part and it had the misprint, so whatever edition they are using has not been corrected.

Which complete tile list are you referring to? This one, linked to from the Cundco spare parts page (http://cundco.de/en/spare-parts/13/plaettchen?c=38), has the misprinted tile: http://cundco.de/media/pdf/Kartenliste.pdf

That pdf was created by a CarcF member;  his user name is on the bottom left.  It's a great PDF.  I was referring to this one (http://www.hans-im-glueck.de/fileadmin/data_archive/Downloads/CarcKartenliste1_9_Minis.pdf); which you can find on the Grunspiel page: http://www.hans-im-glueck.de/carcassonne/carcassonne-grundspiel/

What about when it was included in Big Box 3? Several other tiles have been changed for Big Box print runs in the past (e.g. the Hill & Sheep misprint).

Is anyone here in possession of BB3 and able to check this Bridges, Castles & Bazaars tile?

Well that was disappointing - I believed it had been corrected, because the HiG Complete Tile List had it corrected.  However, I've verified:
  • Carcassonne: Basaarit ja Bastionit - Finland
  • Carcassonne: Mosty a hrady - Czech
  • Carcassonne: Bazars, ponts et forteresses - French
  • Carcassonne: Bruggen, Burchten en Bazaars - Dutch
  • Каркасон: Мостове, замъци, пазари - Bulgarian
  • Каркассон. Колесо фортуны - Russian
  • Carcassonne: Mercados y Puentes - Spanish

Editions all don't include the correction.  It's possible a newer HiG edition doesn't contain the fault, but it seems unlikely.

Decar, do you own all of those language variants? Or how did you check?

My googlfu is strong
Evidently much stronger than mine!

I emailed the HiG contact address, it seems like they may never have realised the error!

Dear Jamie,

I just checked the tiles we have here and it turned out that all tiles B8H have two watermarks. Nobody had every noticed this before. Thank you for telling us about it. Unfortunately, we can not replace the tile because all tiles have that error. I’m sorry for this.

Kind regards,

Michael Fronia

Hello,

Sorry that this is in English.

In my copy of Brücken, Burgen und Basare there is a tile with an extra watermark. See the attached picture.

However, in the card list it only has one watermark. See tile B8H on page 8 of this PDF (also attached): http://www.hans-im-glueck.de/fileadmin/data_archive/Downloads/CarcKartenliste1_9_Minis.pdf

Is it possible to buy a copy of this tile with only one watermark? If so, when was it released?

Thank you!

Jamie

That's awesome. I'd happily buy a fix ;)  wonder if they'll do it now...

Unfortunately, it doesn't look like we will ever see a "fixed" version of this tile:

Hello Jamie,

I’m afraid that this tile will not be reprinted. It is an error that does not hurt the gameplay. So we don’t fell we have to offer replacement parts. The next time we print that particular expansion, it will have the new design so tiles will be completely different anyways.

Kind regards,

Michael Fronia

Hi Michael,

Thank you for your help.

Do you think that this tile could ever be reprinted? I know several Carcassonne fans who would be interested in this!

That's a shame, although I wasn't expecting a replacement.

Good way of finding out the Castles, Bridges and Bazaar will be released with new artwork - a merit for your sneakiness ;)   :(y) :(y)

I have updated this thread with one that I just remembered - the Wheel Of Fortune tiles that lost a watermark in the BB5 release.
