I backed at the "Royal" level.  Hopefully I don't regret it.

Nobody complains that Draw Poker & Pinochle never change

I do.  I entered a hold em tournament with a friend a few years ago.  I was glad when I got kicked out and happy to not have to play anymore.  Once you know the odds and stuff, the game kind of plays itself.  I see people at casinos playing blackjack or slot machines for hours on end.  Some people are happy with playing Dominoes, Uno, Mahjong, or Phase 10 every weekend.  I had an aunt that cheated at solitaire.  I don't get it.

Having a colossal edition with moats and without is really silly.  They are offering 2 different sized colossal boxes just for that.  From what I gather, that expansion isn't worth all of that effort logistically.

I have a pretty big game table and I don't think 3 players and the score board would comfortably fit the colossal edition.   I may get the cheapest version.  I never much really cared for metal coins and slightly better pawns.

I 100% agree that they insulted New Zealand with the cost of shipping and I don't know why.  Aside from that, why are you underwhelmed?  I like the new art.

I can't wait to get these home and get a big game going.   :(y)

I feel bad for anyone in the US that ponied up for the shipping prior to the BGG deal.

I have never played the Castles of Mad King Ludwig, but I am super tempted by the collectors edition.

I am not sure I have room for the colossal edition.   :o

We can't play the base game anymore.  We can't play base Pandemic, Cacao, or King of New York any more either.  The expansions add flavor to games that are quite stale at our house.   Perhaps we shouldn't play our favorite games so much.

We only have base game Catan and I am not sure if we will ever play it again.  The game is fairly easy to predict the winner based on the starting positions of every player.  Maybe we should invest in Cities & Knights or something to make it new again.  If Seafarers is as boring as Inns & Cathedrals, I'll steer clear.

Expansions that are just more of the same get old really fast.  I guess there is a sweet spot where an expansion has to change enough to justify its existence, but not change too much so that the game isn't recognizable anymore. The catapult turns a tile laying game into a dexterity game which is stupid.  Isle Of Skye Journeyman turns a bidding/tile laying game into a Euro point salad slog.  Pandemic is a cooperative game and in the first expansion they added a bio-terrorist role...  There are probably more examples, but you get the idea.

Reviews & Session Reports / Re: The worst expansion combination
« on: December 14, 2020, 09:45:08 AM »

I think the actual worst combination would be the Catapult and the Tower.  Imagine knocking the towers over with flying meeples!

If you look at my first post, you'd see that's what we did  ;D
But luckily we didn't hit any tower with the catapult tokens !

I wonder what would happen if you hit a tower.   I am sure Meepledrone knows the rule for knocked over towers.   ^-^

I was going through your list and missed the catapult completely.  That is what I get posting before I have had caffeine :-[

The plague doesn't work well with anything more than the base game.   With too many tiles, it gets watered down and doesn't have much of an effect.

Unofficial Rules / Re: The Fortune Tellers and other expansions
« on: December 07, 2020, 01:35:36 PM »
We play this expansion quite a lot, but I am by no means an authority on the rules.

Q0 No.

Q1 No.

Q2 This has come up with the builder.  Say my wife has 2 meeple on fortune tellers.  She draws 3 tiles, chooses one, but doesn't discard them back to the bag until her turn is complete.  If she plays a tile that involves the builder, she can only use one of the other 2 tiles she drew earlier.

Q3 This hasn't come up for us, but I would assume that if you drew 3 tiles and 1 of them couldn't be played, you could redraw that one tile, BUT whatever tile you exchanged it for has to be placed.  An example would be if you picked up a CCCC tile with no open cities on the board along with 2 other tiles.  In order to be able to exchange that tile, you would have to choose it.  When you make that choice, you forfeited the other 2 tiles.  So there is a gamble there.

We are about to start June.  My wife loves this, but I don't like it as much as Season 2.  I think my biggest gripes without getting spoilery is that the board doesn't change like it does in Season 2 AND curing a disease is much more fulfilling than building a van.  This also seems super easy as we haven't lost yet.

Has anyone from North or South America received their Cundco order with the 2020 tile yet?

Two months ago I shipped a registered letter to the USA. It took 4 days from my post office in Switzerland to arrive in the USA, and then one month from arrival in the USA to its final destination... Be patient, your order is probably already in America  ;)

You are probably right, but I will say that the last time I ordered Cundco sent me a "Your order has been shipped by Deutsche Post".  This time I never got that message, but didn't think much of it until now.  I emailed them, I suppose it doesn't hurt to ask.

I am hoping to pick this up from our local game store today!  My wife is really excited.
