Carcassonne – what is stopping you playing?
« on: September 07, 2014, 07:11:18 AM »
Just wondered what the main practical issues were that are stopping you from playing more often.

I find that clearing enough space to set the game up can be a real roadblock – turns a potentially pleasant game into pointless discussion over “what is all your stuff doing piled up here?   - My Stuff? -  What about all the mess you make?”  I am trying to establish a rule that the gaming table in the basement is always to be kept clear and ready for a game.  I don't mind clearing it as long as nobody objects to how I put their stuff away.

Also what is your best trick for getting a game started at short notice, do you keep a premixed pack with the base game and 1 or 2 expansions that are ready to go?

Two things keep me from playing:
1. Having people to play with.
2. Having time to play.

This is exactly why I started the online league/ world cup. Granted it's no substitute for the real thing but it was never going to be. It does take advantage of the fact that there are a forum full of people without anyone to play against though, and because we're mostly fairly competitive players many of the resulting games have been an exciting, enjoyable learning experience all round. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that some of the best games of Carcassonne I've ever played have been done so without so much as touching a physical tile.

Finding the time to play is another matter, but at least playing online means you can save time by not having to sort all the tiles and tidy them away afterwards!  :)

Gee. No pressure.  :@ (internal joke for danisthirty)

Can't say I've stopped playing, but almost feels like it sometimes. Time is often the case, to get people together. And when we do, it's usually something else, like Settlers of Catan.
There's even talk about Diplomacy, which I know will start a war amongst ourselves. We would never be able to think ahead, plan or put aside our rage when things go awry! (Me, my friends and my family I play with.)

These days it has been every 3-4 months apart for a Carcassonne game and then it's usually a megaCarc.
World record holder for a single game of Carcassonne using 10 007 tiles!

I do not get to play it because most my friends do not like it now a days. They think it has grown too big.

We still play some of the spin-offs on occasion, but mostly we stick to other games.

Yellow: Diplomacy session planned for November. In my group we hate each other anyway!  ^-^

Actually, being able the touch the physical components is more appealing to me. Also, my OCD enjoys sorting the tiles afterwards.

Pretty much the same.  No one is very interested to play.  I've been trying to get my people interested in a long game at least once, but no takers.
