From CAR pg.161

Description of the Messenger - Score a followed and remove it from the board.
Score a follower and remove it from the board: The player chooses one of his or her followers in play. If the player has the majority in the feature where the selected follower stands, he or she scores that feature (only for himself or herself) as if it were the end of the game. The player then puts the chosen follower back in his or her supply.

THE SITUATION
There are two players.
Through the course of the game my opponent - my lovely wife - ends up with two farmers (not big man, but two "small?" men) on the same farm. I am not on the farm.
My opponent gets the Message - score a follower and remove it from the board.
It is a big farm - 10 cities and she has her pig on it - 40 points.
So naturally a discussion unfolds as to the outcome.
This is what we decided in following rules.

The player chooses one of his or her followers in play.

Wife chooses one farmer

If the player has the majority in the feature where the selected follower stands, he or she scores that feature (only for himself or herself) as if it were the end of the game.

Wife has majority so scoring takes place ... end of game means pig is included ... so 40 points

The player then puts the chosen follower back in his or her supply.

Wife puts chosen follower (singular) back into supply along with pig.

The outcome was that the wife still has a farmer on the farm to score again later.

HAVE WE INTERPRETED THIS RULE CORRECTLY?

THE GAME OUTCOME
We had a pretty lengthy game so went through the messengers 4 times.
In the second round of messengers the wife pulled the same message ... by this time she had gotten the pig back on and added a city. The shape of the farm was such that it was impossible to join onto.
So 44 points.
The farm is now free, but I can't get the right tile, so wife reclaims the same farm.

In the third round of messengers SHE GOT THE TILE AGAIN. No pig this time ... but 11 cities ... 33 points.
Thankfully, after 5 rounds of tile pulling, I could get onto the farm.

In the fourth round of messengers ... YES SHE GOT THE TILE AGAIN.
She had an enclosed 5 city farm with one farmer so pulled the follower from there ... 15 points.

That one message tile gave my opponent 77 extra points in the game.
Yes she won.
But only just!

A good game was enjoyed by all!

Some of the Halflings have a huge capacity to join farms, even multiple number of farms.
There is one tile which has two stubby roads on it, this joins farms nicely.
So, if I can, I think ahead about where farms are and make sure I have the meeple power needed to take them all.
The pieces are also excellent for last minute points grabbing.

Official Rules / Two Castle Questions
« on: March 23, 2015, 11:07:15 PM »
Can a castle have a road leading into it ... or does it have to be completely isolated.

The rules state that the castle is made only by two semi-circular city segments.
We have determined that tiles such as FCFC and RCRC can be used for castles ... maybe even two!
But what about tiles such as FFCC ... or RCCC (like the tile in Bridges Castles ans Bazaars) ... can these half cities also be used for castles.  Or does the semi circle city segment have to be isolated?

Hope these questions makes sense.

I've only been recently introduced to the game but still prefer the original styling.
But I'm not planning to get every expansion, or offshoot, or ridiculously overpriced ebay "collectables" (Cathers and Tunnels being the prime culprits).
My sense for the future - if HiG and their partners want to effectively transition to Carcassonne 2.0 they will need a well priced "Mega-Release" which would include the base game, 5-6 major expansions, and a few mini expansions.

Official Rules / End of Game Scoring for Besiegers/Cathers
« on: January 26, 2015, 02:26:35 PM »
This is photo of part of our game last night.
If you can't see it tile under the flash area is a besieger tile.
So in terms of end-of-game scoring.
Black gets 6 - 3 for the city and 3 for the besiegers.

Red is in a different farm and the siege is set up on the other side of the city.
I'm pretty sure Red scores 9 - 3 for city and 3 for besieger and 3 for the other small city.
But since the siege is on the opposite side is it only 6 points - 3 for each city?

So the question really is - do farmers score 6 points for every farm that has a besieged city.
Or does the "siege" need to be in your farm area to get the 6 points.

I looked at CAR and the answer is probably there, but I couldn't find it.
Thanks in advance for your combined wisdom.

One of the things I really wanted to make sure of was that it was something that was relatively easy to pick up for new players.

As a newer player I think this is a great document - it would be good to "field" test it to see if the answers the questions which come up during the game can be found.
I'd humbly like to suggest that the CAR section "Order of Play" might be re-included.
We found ourselves referring to that aspect on numerous occasions - especially when we began to learn the various extensions.

Strategy Guide / Re: Joining Fields
« on: January 14, 2015, 07:32:26 PM »
I'm not sure exactly what kind of knowledge we are already assuming here, but I think you can take the 'How can I join fields?' section down to an even more basic level.

Can I just affirm this as a basic approach for all the strategies. The concept of working from the easier (i.e. assuming someone only has the basic game plus the earlier expansions - River, I&C, T&B) - and then introducing later the more "complex" aspects ... like bridges and other components (don't know the game well enough to give examples).

Also just a question/comment
I know Carc 2.0 is out but most people would have Carc 1.0 and none of the expansions are Carc 2.0 except Abbot.  Should this mean that the photos should be Carc 1.0 format as this is most familiar to most people?

Really appreciating the combined generosity of time, skill and interaction.

I'm also going to cheat a bit by including old posts such as the one I posted specifically about tactics for games with more than one opponent. I think it's on General somewhere...

The tactics your talking about are here:- http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=1060.msg12222#msg12222

I've been reading through all the old posts and gathering various tactics and ideas and correlating them into a document.
This was a great help.
Also extremely helpful for general play were the sections in the Carcassonne Central News Letter (meeple blocking etc) and the comments in the Element of the Week series.
Can't wait to see the end product of this current collaborative project.

General / Re: Table Talk - how does this happen at your game?
« on: January 11, 2015, 12:45:57 PM »
Yes, usually when a family member makes a play but misses an opportunity for a really good placement, I can't help myself and I say something like "Oooh, I know a really good spot for that one." I usually only do that if it helps them against me, otherwise other players get upset. But I can't help coaching.  :D

I'd love to get some coaching from some of the players on this site.
I don't suppose and of you live in Brisbane?
You should all know where that is - we showed the world how to host an "Incident Free G20".
But for those of you who were too busy playing Carcassonne to watch the news - Brisbane is the capital of Queensland, a state in Australia.

General / Table Talk - how does this happen at your game?
« on: January 09, 2015, 06:24:01 PM »
Carcassonne is one of few games that encourages "Table Talk" - discussing places for tiles, making suggestions which can be both helpful and misleading, initiating alliances.
Since we are still learning there is a lot of discussion at our games (we play as a family of four, sometimes 5 - less often 2-3 players).
But now we are getting to the point where we don't want as much discussion because one player is revealing a strategy or a moves that the one placing the tile has not seen.
So effectively each turn becomes trying to outwit the combined thoughts of 2 or 3 others.
Is there a time when you decide not to have discussions?
Are there any "unwritten rules"?
Perhaps the number of people in the game - 4-5 players - is the cause?
I'd be really interested to hear how others treat the rule that "Discussion is Encouraged".

Official Rules / Re: The Count ... the farm ... and footnote 91.
« on: January 09, 2015, 06:13:59 PM »
The whole footnote is explaining "If a feature is completed" part. So the main thing that can be confusing - scoring of features occurs even if there are no followers in that feature. Simply in this case nobody receives the points. Exactly these points you can "steal" with followers from City of Carcassonne.

OK. I see now where we are going wrong.
CAR 7.3:44 says "When a player places a tile that causes AT LEAST ONE PLAYER TO SCORE POINTS (then rest of explanation)".
We were then using that same principle (namely finishing features where a meeple is located and a score is going to take place) and applying it to the "Deployment from the City of Carcassonne" phase.
Looking at it now it doesn't make sense - and the rules are quite clear. Newbie mistake.

My reservation with including bits from other strategy guides found on the internet is that I don't always find them very helpful. This is a personal thing, but much of the advice will be obvious to anyone who has played more than a handful of games, and a lot of the rest is questionable (in my opinion at least - or maybe I’m just being unnecessarily pedantic?).

Even having this advise as a "strategy" is good to know. I guess this means if you want to get the right advice you need to go to the most trusted source :)
It has been a good learning curve of a day.
