What better way to start the new year than with a brand new Carcassonne Central online tournament?! :(y) ;D :(y)
It's free to enter and anyone with a PC/ Laptop/ Mac (i.e. anybody who can run JCloisterZone) can take part, regardless of skill level. Here are a few points on how it will work:
- All players will be divided between a number of groups so that no group contains more than 7 or 8 players (preferably). Each group will have a dedicated administrator to oversee the running of the group and keep a master record of scores.
- Every player must play a single head-to-head (2-player) game of Carcassonne against every other person in their group. Games will be played online using JCloisterZone so please ensure you have downloaded the latest version of this and have got it running on your PC well in advance of your first game.
- Each game must include just the basic game plus the Traders & Builders expansion only, for a total of 96 tiles. The starting player should be selected at random by checking the “Randomise Seating Order” checkbox on the pre-game screen.
- Every player is awarded 3 league points for every game they win, or 1 point for a draw. This will be the primary ranking criteria for the league.
- The total number of points scored by you and the total number of points scored against you (by your opponents) throughout all league games you’ve played will be logged and used to calculate your total score differential (total points won minus total points scored against you). This will be the secondary ranking criteria for the league.
- Once you have finished your game, please post a screenshot of the final scores (these will appear in a pop-up window immediately after the final tile has been placed) back to the forums along with a write-up of your game if you so wish.
- Once everyone has played everyone else within their groups, similarly ranked players will play each other to determine an overall ranking (i.e. Group A winner vs Group B winner, Group A 2nd vs Group B 2nd etc).
There will be more details to follow, but if you'd like to take part please register your interest by posting below. Closing date for entries is the end of next week (11th Jan) with a view to having the first games played at the start of the following week.
The exact duration of the competition will depend on the number of participants, but if you're likely to be away for any sustained period of time between 12th January and early February then please be mindful of this before entering!
Best regards, and good luck!

Welcome on board guys! :(y)
T & B is such a classic expansion that I'm really looking forward to getting this tournament up and running!
-
I am in, I have to. Got a score to settle, with literally everyone. :P

I am there.

I am definitely in! :(y)
Have some comments about format, but I will leave them aside for the moment :)

Im in !

I am in.

Do you need to ask? Of course I am in!

I am a novice player and am located in Central European time zone. The first seems to be no problem (anyone [...] can take part, regardless of skill level), so if the second is OK too, I would like to join as well.
-
I am in. Thanks to danisthirty for notice me. I almost missed it.

Sorry, I am not in, because I don't play online Carcassonne.

The second is definitely OK (and the first too, of course). For the most part we have two groups of players in these leagues regarding timezones: those in Europe and those in North America, so there will be plenty of others in your timezone or one hour ahead/behind.

I'm in :)

Very true. I will move it there once the registration deadline has passed. The reason it is here is purely because this is the most read section of the forums and I don't want anybody who might have been interested in playing to have missed it.
Sorry, I am not in, because I don't play online Carcassonne.
That's a shame. I thought you were warming to the idea of playing using JCloisterZone?
-
I am way IN! Glad I didn't miss this. I too have scores to settle in league play. >:D
-
So we're at 13 now. I guess an optimum number would be 14 or 16?
-
I'll go in twice if necessary :p

I made an account on these forums just to post in this thread.
I'd be up for doing an online tournament of Carcassonne! It would be my first time every playing "competively", so I'm not sure how well I'd do, but hey! Just playing is great fun as well :)
A few minor remarks I guess: I haven't played with JCloisterZone yet, so if anyone is kind enough to test out with me if I can get games running etc, that'd be awesome! I believe I can get my computer be a host as well. I'd love to just test a few games before starting this, just so I know I can actually PLAY, and so I know how the games on there work. (but I believe I can also test that vs an AI?)

Welcome to the forum Yall, if you've downloade JCZ: 3.0.2 and have it running you can connect to my host on: carc.tehill.net on port 37447. Should be online for the next hour.
EDIT: JCZ: 3.0.2 not 3.2.0. PM me if you need help!

After trying for a bit, it seems I cannot open the port to host games... on a brightside, I was able to join Decar's game, so I can atleast join others :)
-
Glad it's half working! No doubt it's firewall or port forwarding, it's a fiddle these days. Hopefully the new JCZ will make this easier. I Just wanted to let you know my hour got cut a little short :(
Hope you manage to get it working; I'm around tomorrow if you need some help.

If there was a smiley for whistling and looking the other way I'd be using it right now!

Welcome to the forums Yall! I hope that you enjoy your time here at Carcassonne Central and wish you all the best for the tournament!

I'm interested, but I've never used JCloister before -- does each game need to be played real-time in its entirety for this tourney?

Hello CarcinFool, welcome to the forums! :(y)
We use JCloisterZone because it allows people to connect and play Carcassonne across the internet. At present it is only possible to play in real-time so you'd need to set aside half an hour to an hour for each game and agree with your opponent on a mutually acceptable time for your match. The fact that few of us are in the same time zone is an unfortunate complication, although many of us are at least on the same continent! Generally most people are fairly flexible with regards to time but I will attempt to reduce potential time zone conflicts as much as possible when I arrange the groups.
Please let me know if you're still interested! :)

Ok thx for the reply. Unfortunately I'm probably not able to commit to the time required. Have a good tourney!
-
I've had a few messages regarding various things that I haven't made clear so here are some clarifications:
- Games played will be synchronous (i.e. you and your opponent will both be sitting at a computer, playing each other in real time). Naturally we all prefer to play in person, but flying everyone around the world to play each other was deemed to be financially problematic so playing online is the next best thing.
- Individual competitors do not need to be able to host JCloisterZone games on their own computers. Farin (the author of JCloisterZone who is also taking part in the competition) is working on a dedicated host server which we will hopefully be able to use for future competitions and possibly even this one depending on how far along he is with it. But for the time being, if neither you nor your opponent can host then a third-party host will be arranged for you by your group administrator.
- Unlike the last league, there will be no “rounds” specifying who your next opponent should be. You need to play everyone in your group, but arranging those matches at a mutually agreeable time will be up to you so you can choose to face your fellow league members in whichever order you choose.
- Hopefully this won’t be the case, but if a game crashes and cannot be continued, the host of the game should attempt to save it, quit and restart JCloisterZone, load the saved game and then let the other player connect. Please repeat this if the first attempt fails to reload the game, before contacting your group administrator if the second attempt also fails. In the event that the game crashes at quite an early stage or no clear winner has been established, you may also restart your game if it can’t be reloaded as long as both players are in agreement over this.
- If anybody drops out of the competition, the results of all games played against that person will be removed from the overall standings. This could be bad news for you if it robs you of a good win, or good news if it removes all trace of a bad loss, but ultimately it’s bad news for the competition as a whole as we want everyone to stay in until the end.
- Traders & Builders may seem like a strange choice since this is the first of the 2015 “Expansion League” series and T & B is the 2nd large expansion. However, Inns & Cathedrals was used extensively (in the group stage) of last year’s World Cup of Carcassonne Central, hence why I chose to start this year with Traders & Builders.

Gentlemen... Start your engine (engine in computer terms means a system, i.e. a computer or a TV game console).

Is there an odd number of players then?

Is there an odd number of players then?
Looks like it. Trying to find an 18th player just to make the two groups even...
-
Hello again.
This topic has now been unlocked as we only have 17 players and it's proving difficult to arrange the groups evenly with an odd number of players. ::)
So, if you haven't signed up yet but would be interested in playing a few (9) games of Carcassonne against your fellow forum members over the next 3 or 4 weeks then please sign up by posting a reply in this thread. As long as you've got a PC or a Mac you should be able to install Java and run JCloisterZone. It doesn't cost anything, and it's lots of fun. Do it.
-
Won't want to discourage an 18th player, would be great, if one is showing up. But in case not, would it be such a big problem, if we would play in two groups, one with 8, one with 9 players? The last one in the bigger group (who could likely be me) would get at least 8 games out of the tournament, the others could then proceed with an 1/8 final (first of one group against eight of the other) and so on, or the first four of each group go straight to the quarterfinal, the places 9, 11, 13 and 15 are done by games of equal places in the two groups. Just a suggestion, how different rounds of the league could be handled more or less equal, no matter how many players attend the round.

Yes this is all true and will likely be applied once everyone has played against everyone else (exact details are currently being discussed). It just seems a shame that a single player should be eliminated from any additional play if it could otherwise have been avoided.
If there are no responses by tomorrow morning (my time) then we will proceed with 17.

I just can't help joining in. I have not much spare-time these days but never mind. I'm in! :D

Great news Leven! We appreciate the time you're investing; I'll make sure every move I play is calculated if/when we play O:-)

Welcome on board Leven! Thanks for taking part... :)
