Title: from HongKong on eBay? (free shipping) [Buyer Beware]
Post by: mPony on January 26, 2018, 05:42:26 PM
Has anybody bought the old-art edition currently for sale on eBay?  Free shipping from several sellers in HongKong and China, all using the same photos in their ads.

https://www.ebay.ca/itm/Carcassonne-An-English-Board-Game-2-5-Players-Card-Game-For-Party-Family-Friends/222706002247?hash=item33da4fe947:g:VbIAAOSwWZpZ~ZZc

Definitely on the cheap side, so I would expect these might be lower quality.  I'm just looking for tiles I can use for custom expansions, so I can deal with poorer quality of score board, box, etc.  I just need the tile backs to be somewhat indistinguishable from those I already have.

Last time I bought an item with free shipping from Asia it didn't show up.  They offered to send a replacement.  The replacement also didn't show up.  By this time it was too late to complain to eBay or PayPal so I lost my 7 bucks.  Still, I was bothered.  So this is why I ask.

First thing that I expected it to be was the knock off version that shows up every now and again, like this one:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Carcassonne-with-6-Expansions-Board-Game-Party-Family-Free-Shipping-from-China-/122646374449?_ul=GB
But this one seems more legit. Although I wouldn't be sure this will actually be a RGG version to be honest.
That aside, and assuming this would be a legit version:
Free shipping from China usually just takes ages. Although somehow some companies are able to speed it up these days, most of the time it will take a long time, that is why they can offer it for free  ;) and a legit copy for this price with free shipping, you start to wonder how and where they make money off it...
All in all, I occasionally order stuff from AliExpress and such, knowing shipping will take a long time. It usually works fine; I've never had something not show up at all

I believe someone over on carcF picked up a copy.  The quality was terrible. Save your coins and buy a big box from a reputable source!

My understanding is that the Chinese versions of Carcassonne are printed illegally. If that's true, we should not participate in the piracy chain. (Also the quality is usually bad.)

I found a seller who likes to sell his CS&S tiles... Marktplaats Seller (https://www.marktplaats.nl/a/hobby-en-vrije-tijd/gezelschapsspellen-overige/m1248976599-carcassonne-cult-siege-and-creativity-uitbreiding.html?c=aba4801fe1dcfdf8e084fd4b2e0a17e&previousPage=mijnberichten)

They have never been released this way right?

I've only seen them in a box.  I held a box once, but never opened it......

Yes I also only know the tuckbox version of this. Didn't knew they were printed like this

What are you waiting to check it?  ;)

No! These are not legit!
These are part of the Chinese knock off version that is sold on eBay every now and again. The tiles being printed 'upside down' is a give away, and mostly the fact that the blank tiles are not white, but green.
See attached a picture of how they sell it.
C,S&C has only been sold in the tuckbox with white blank tiles and never 'upside down'

If you want you can buy them of course, but it doesn't support the official channels in any way I'm afraid.
And he states that they are new in their package, which would likely be the blue box with Chinese on it, and not the tuckbox.

A merit for you, sir. My spirit of risk was wrong ;_;

Tnx Willem. No I don't want them. I like my version more :D

Another tip-off that these are bogus is the fact that they are punched from the wrong side. Zoom in on the image that shows 6 fronts and 6 backs, and you can tell that the cutting die was applied from the back side instead of the front. This will cause all the tiles to feel as though they have been "printed upside-down."

Cheap, knock-off rubbish. (And also illegal, I believe.)

EDIT: Oops, Willem already pointed this out. Sorry I overlooked that.

I'll merge this with the recent Chinese printing thread.

Tnx Decar. We indeed do not need two toppics about stupid Chinese stuff.  :gray-meeple:

I'd add to this topic that if you were recently fooled on aliexpress, you can very easily being reimbursed by opening a dispute.  O:-)

true, but it seems that the carcassonne knock off on ali express are clear knock offs, and the pictures shows this as well.
It could be worth a try though ;)

Thanks for the input.  As I mentioned I'm less concerned with how the tile fronts look, since I'd be re-stickering them.

Even still, if it seems too good to be true I'm sure it probably is.

Lastly, what's "CarcF"?

CarcF is the Carcassonne Fourm which to my knowlege is basically a German version of Carcassonne Central (CarcC)

Oh yes, I've only been there a few times.  I need an auto-translator plug-in to really dig in.  Any recommendations?

A post I found indicates the knock-offs aren't the same tile size.  The tiles are a bit smaller.  As such, it'd be useless for re-facing for fan expansions.
Thankfully there are always used copies to be had.

I am selling a basegame if you want spare tiles.  No box, with or without meeples and score board - £10.
