As I described in the ACCGSC-thread (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=2846.0) there are 2 contests being run in parallel from: NOW until Sunday 7th August 2016 23:59:59 SST. No entries can be submitted after the deadline.
Physical Only Contest
Now for the main event!
I've been working on a Solo Variant especially for this event entitled: Carcassonne: Solomo
Inspired by JF's 'Carcassonne: Island' in this variant the player is given the task designing a new Duomo; a type of Italian Cathedral. Solomo is a word-play on Solo-mode & Duomo. The player play tiles within the strict confines of the walls of the Solomo, using only the 72-tiles from the base game.
It is assumed a player will be familiar with the basic rules of Carcassonne before attempting this
variant.
The aim of the game is to score as many points as possible!
A full set of rules can be downloaded from here. (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?action=downloads;sa=view;down=317)
I'll give you a brief overview of the game's rules:
It's only played with 5 meeple, +1 for scoring!
Rule 1: Start by build the Solomo Walls
Draw 26 tiles and lay them face down in the following fashion:
Rule 2 : Starting the game
The first tile is drawn and must be placed on one of the 2 starting locations, marked with a red-X. Subsequent tiles must be placed touching an existing tile, or if available it can be played at the other start location.
Rule 3: Discarding tiles
Rather than laying a tile you may discard a tile - a discarded tile is placed face up into one of the corners, marked with a red-D.
A discarded tile cannot have a follower played on it. If a tile cannot be legally played, it must be discarded
Rule 4: Use the Solomo Walls to complete features.
Features work like Abbey walls, if you are familiar. A feature can be considered terminated, and possibly completed if played against the Walls of the solomo.
Rule 5: Cloisters
The walls are considered when scoring cloisters, including corners.
Rule 6: Ending the game
The game ends when all 72-tiles are laid, or if four tiles have been discarded into the corners of the Solomo and a fifth tile must be discarded.
Rule 7: Perfect Solomo Bonus
If you manage to lay all 72 tiles, you score a perfect Solomo and earn an additional 15 bonus points.
Again, check the full rules are more details and examples, (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?action=downloads;sa=view;down=317)
Here's a few photos of games I captured. My highest score was 155!!
Here I scored 135, it was a good game, except I managed to play the tiles so I got 2 uncompletable tiles.
Here I scored 140, I'd have done much better if I got some farmers down!
This was my best game, I drew all the cloisters and scored a massive farm:

Please note, I was using an astronomer tile as a replacement for the tile i sent to Dan. (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=2162.0)
Photos as I described previously!
Finally, it would be great to see submissions via twitter, please use the #gencant #carcsolocon @carcassonne tags.
If you have any questions about Carcassonne: Solomo please see the Variant Workshop (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=2857.0) to avoid clutter on this submissions thread.
Good luck everyone.
For the random spot prize, each player will receive 1-chance for each entry they submit. The chances will be picked at random after the contest.
The maximum number of chances will be 5 per player, but you are welcome to submit more. One additional chance will be given to anyone who includes #gencant #carcsolocon @carcassonne in a tweet with their submission.

I've played this 3 times now and my scores have been consistently bad. 119 on my first effort seemed reasonable, but then it was 113 and then 119 again. Still, it's great fun and I'm really enjoying the thinking process. Setting it up so that you don't see the fronts of the tiles around the outside is a bit of a pain but it only takes 5 mins or so to setup which is well worth it for the 30 mins of fun that follow!
Definitely recommended, is anyone else trying this?
-
Thanks for giving it a go Dan! I find grabbing 7 tiles and blocking them together, then drawing 6 tiles twice for both sides, is the quickest way of getting the walls out. After a couple of games, I stopped being so fussy too and lined them up during the game.
-
Here are my best efforts so far:
Game #1: 119
(http://www.dan.tehill.net/Solomo_119.jpg)
Game #4: 135
(http://www.dan.tehill.net/Solomo_135.jpg)
I was definitely owed another cloister in the second of the two games above; I'd made a space for it and everything! >:(
-
Played a few games, best ended with 145 points. Got lucky with both Shields and Cloisters i think. Image in the twitter post.

Well played LBZer0, that's a great score (by my standards)!
PS - welcome to the forums! :) :(y)

Game #5: 144
(http://www.dan.tehill.net/Solomo_144.jpg)
If I'd rotated the cfff in the lower-left corner with the farmer on it through 90 degrees anti-clockwise (so that it made an unfillable [cffr] gap above it) then I would have been able to place the frfr (straight road) to the right of it for an additional 6 points (+5 for the road and +1 for the cloister). So, 150 was possible. However, I was hoping that there might have been either a crfr or a crrr left in the bag which would have given me +3 for the small farm plus 4 or 5 for the city/ road depending on the tile drawn.
-
Thanks for giving Solomo a go LBZer0! And you've taken 1st place with 145 points. Dan's close behind with 144 though. That ending was gruelling! I'm finding it interesting that most games have only 2 or 3 empty spaces. Don't forget there's a 15point bonus for filling the Solomo!

Toadflax234 - Scores 118 on BGG (https://boardgamegeek.com/article/23380294#23380294)
Thanks for taking part!

154 and 137! We have a new leader!

154 and 137! We have a new leader!
Myself and my wife really enjoying this. Both love carcassone but don't have the time as much at the moment. So quick, so small, so addictive! Love it! Thanks for this.
-
Happy to hear you both enjoyed it Cobyhectic. It looks like you've got the hang of it with some impressive scores! Also welcome to Carcassonne Central!
I saw another attempt from LBZer0 this morning - 135! Not bad and it goes towards the spot prizes!
Take a look at @CameronJJ's Tweet: https://twitter.com/CameronJJ/status/762130613037993984?s=09
-
First attempt - 133. It's so quick to play through, as well.
-
Great picture! Thanks for giving it a go!
-
123 for my first attempt. And 130 for my second.
-
Woohoo
156!!!
-
Most impressive! I quickly counted 16 cities. Great work with the 2 pointers for max city points!
-
Boo! Stop beating me at everything Rosco! :P
-
These are my best two results, with 164 and 163 points.
I don't think there will be time to make another attempt.
-
Leven NOOOOO !!
But Leven yours doesn't count because you posted 2 at once. And because your screen name has an L in it. And because ... Well just because i said so.
Well done mate. I may try to have another go. At the mo i am on my way to south Wales Sony not have time
-
Here's an improvement - 147 - and just one tile gap. All the cities on one field with three cfcf tiles coming out. One more game tonight I think.
-
Great to see all these boards! Leven looks like you'll be maintaining another gencant solo title!
But there's still time and the 15point bonus might just give another competitor the edge!
Rosco, you're very close: let me know if you've got time for a coffee and a match if you're near the M4/Cardiff.
-
So, it can be done!!! Score = 156 - actually, a comparatively lowly 141 plus the completion bonus of 15. And one tile left over!
Things didn't start too well with the first three tiles (I thought at the time) committing meeple on each of the cloisters in the bottom row. Towards the end gave up scoring a couple of cities (top left, and the 4-pointer in second row up which was completed with the second last tile drawn) to get the farmer scoring instead. Final tile was the straight road tile above the thief meeple.
-
You've got to put the last tile in the corner for the full affect!
Congratulations though - first person to complete an almost perfect Solomo!
If all 72-tiles have been played, the player will receive 15-points before final scoring is completed!
Two Entries from @corbyhectic:

I just want to say ....
190
-
Can I request that anyone with a score above 144 be disqualified? It seems only reasonable.

Just as well that I didn't tidy up afterwards, isn't it? Here's the completed board, although I guess I missed the deadline ...
-
Not to worry Wolnic - I'll include your submission - all good works of art cannot be rushed :) :(y)
Let this be a lesson about not tidying up :)
Rosco - That's an incredible score, especially considering 303 was Leven's top score with the whole set!
You'll understand of course that such an important contest score would need to be carefully scrutinised and it seems very viable to score 190:
I was able to determine you could not have completed the 7-road because then you must then have had to complete the length-1 road with the farmer on it; these were the only odd numbers roads. Thus, you managed to score every other road, except a single length 2-road, I suspect between the FRRR tiles - though it could have been another road. Given you had 5 cloisters in your deck you must have been tight at a few points!
The foresight required to construct such a Solomo is quite incredible and is a merit to your Carcassonne! Well done Rosco! :yellow-meeple: :yellow-meeple:
Talking of all merits, I very much appreciate the time taken to enter the competition and taking part in our Annual Gencan't competition; such events give our community a very large boost on the social-media circuits and let other people realize what a great community we have here. As a small thank you every entry will be given a forum-merit from myself. Please reciprocate if you feel I've earned it - though they have no worth they're a good way of giving people a wink for the work that they do and letting people know they're doing things you appreciate for the community.
I'll be counting the submissions very shortly and announcing our winners of the random spot prizes!

Thanks for all of your hard work Decar!! I had a busy weekend and didn't get a chance to do the Solomo yet. I have very much enjoyed looking at all of the other entries. It seems like a lot of fun and a nice challenge so I will give it a try in the next day or two and post pics.
Nice work everyone!! Congrats to Rosco!! :(y)
Next up, Solomos using expansions?
