The Marketplace / Spiel 2020 tile giveaway
« on: December 04, 2022, 01:45:28 PM »
Having recently been able to check some post that had been waiting for me in my office since the pandemic, I found a spare Spiel 2020 bonus tile that I had forgotten about!

I would like to give this to someone who needs it for their collection.

If you're interested please comment on this thread sometime before next Sunday (11th December). It's not first come first served, so don't worry if someone got in before you.

My goal is to give it to someone that will actually enjoy and play with it, rather than just wait to resell it on eBay, so I'll do some preliminary filtering before making a random draw.

Merry Christmas! JT :green-meeple:

News and Events / All The Tiles marathon weekend?
« on: July 15, 2016, 01:27:07 AM »
After the success of the Carcassonne Games Marathon in Draughts a couple of weeks ago, I have been thinking about what the next challenge could be for our community.

I think what I would be most interested in doing next is setting a challenge to play all of the tiles across the Carcassonne franchise in one weekend. So that would include the base game and all of the vairants and spin-offs, as well as all of the expansions for each of them!

When I have played Mega Carcassonne before (including all of the expansions to the base game), it usually takes most of a day to play through. So I do think that we would need a whole weekend to manage this challenge.

Before I think too much more about the details (where? when? how?), is anybody else interested in this in principle?

During the UK meet-up in Oxford, we played New World (a.k.a. Mayflower in non-English versions) and had an unresolved rules question.

Briefly, in the game there are neutral figures called surveyors which move "West" every time a feature is scored and their position affects scoring bonuses and the removal of followers. The question we had was what happens when the surveyors are already in the westernmost column of tiles and a new feature is scored? The rules we had didn't make it clear.

However, it seems that later editions of the Rio Grande Games rules did clarify that in that situation the surveyor simply stays where it is:
Quote
If the surveyors are both in the western-most column of tiles (no tiles to their west) neither moves. They will remain there until a feature is scored and there are tile(s) to their west.

The rules are also clear that the eastern followers are only removed when surveyors actually move.

There was also a confirmation that features have to be scored and not just completed to trigger surveyor movement:

Quote
If a feature is completed, but not scored, the player does not move a surveyor.

So the good news is that the way that we house ruled things on the day was correct. :)

Reviews & Session Reports / Travel Carcassonne game on the train
« on: March 05, 2016, 04:01:54 AM »
I'm on the way to the airport with a few friends and we just squeezed in a quick game of Travel Carcassonne on the train! It's the first time I've ever played it- very cute!

Not too much to say about the game itself. I managed a win by getting a share of the biggest field with the last tile :green-meeple:

General / Watermark changes in tiles
« on: February 25, 2016, 12:10:00 AM »
One of the big topics on the forum recently has been completionism. To take this to the edges, I am interested in which tiles have had changes in their watermarks over the years.

The ones that I know about are:

Expansions originally released with no watermark, but later released with a watermark added
  • Inns & Cathedrals
  • Traders & Builders
  • The Princess & The Dragon
  • The Tower
Mini expansions that gained a crown watermark in Count, King & Cult
  • The King & Robber Baron
  • The River II
Versions of The Cult / Shrines & Heretics
  • Count, King & Cult (crown)
  • Cult, Siege & Creativity (no watermark)
  • Spielbox (pentagon)
Misprints (pictured below)
  • Bridges, Castles & Bazaars tile that was originally misprinted with a double watermark (as in replies below, this was never corrected)
  • Hills & Sheep tile that was originally misprinted with no watermark (corrected in Big Box 5 release)
Other
  • 16 of the base tiles from Big Box 5 have a Wheel Of Fortune symbol but no wheel watermark

Note, I have deliberately omitted The River I, since the Big Box 5 reprint changes more than just the watermark and I considered that release to be The River III.

Is that the full list, or am I missing anything?

jungleboy, maybe this could be added towards the end of your completionsim polls? :)

Reviews & Session Reports / Mega Carcassonne 2016
« on: February 21, 2016, 09:40:33 AM »
A few weeks ago, I played my third game of true Mega Carcassonne which included every tile in print. I have played two previous games like this in 2013 and 2014. New tiles for this game included The Castles and Halflings, which added a good set of options for known tiles; The River III, which made the start tile bag alone quite large; and some new rarities such as the Russian and Darmstadt promos.

Six of us were playing and the game took us a total of 13 hours to finish. We were too tired to precisely score up all of the final fields, but the winning score was approximately 1500 points! I finished up in a slightly disappoiting fifth place, having won the previous two Mega Carc games.

As is sometimes a problem with big games of Carcassonne, the main farm was game-breakingly huge! It had about 60 cities in it which meant that if you were purely playing for score the only sensible thing to do was to try and join farmers in (since it was barned) and get 2 points each time by placing your big. We made an agreement to stop doing that as it got a little boring.

The monasteries are also very powerful in such a large game, easily grabbing at least 50 points if you are lucky enough to draw one or magic portal / fly on to one. Combined with the message that allows you to immediately score any follower (so removing the chance to attack another player's abbot with the dragon or the plague or a tower!), they were also a little over powered.

That notwithstanding, it was a thoroughly enjoyable game! It is always fun trying to work through how all of the rules play in with each other when playing with all of the expansions!

My favourite turn of the day was finding a perfectly constructed two tile hole for my German Castle. It was very satisfying to drop that in and score it immediately :)

Here is the all important photo of the final board:

The Marketplace / Das Schicksalsrad book to give away
« on: January 17, 2016, 09:32:13 AM »
I was browsing eBay the other day and saw a copy of Das Schicksalsrad the novel that accompanied Wheel Of Fortune in Germany:

On an impulse I bought it as a collectible, but having now received it I don't really want it since I can't read German!

If anyone wants it, just send me a PM and I'll give it to you for whatever it costs to post it :green-meeple:

The Marketplace / Possible lead on The Cathars, The Tunnels and others
« on: November 23, 2015, 03:32:59 PM »
I recently found a black teacher meeple by getting in contact with someone at this site: http://www.spieletest.at/spiel.php?ID=3992

When I spoke to him he mentioned that he had some other Carcassonne stuff that he might sell:
Quote
I do have many other expansions like the river, the set Count, King & Robber and many other expansion-boxes, stand alone Count, stand alone King and Scout, stand alone cult places, the Catharists, the tunnels. Do you need some of these?

I have all of these expansions, but maybe someone on here is looking for them?

I am not certain that he will actually sell these and I do not know what price he would be asking, but if you would like me to put you in contact then let me know in a PM.

The Marketplace / Spare Hunters & Gatherers meeples to make Falconers?
« on: November 14, 2015, 01:57:14 AM »
I have recently given in to buying the various spin-offs and as part of this I want to make The Falcon expansion for Carcassonne: The Castle. Part of this is that you need some new figures:

For the kings I am going to use mayors, which are easy to find as spares. For the falconers I want to use the meeple from Hunters & Gatherers, but I don't know where to get them. Has anyone seen a place to buy spares of these?

If not, would anyone be interested in splitting the cost of buying a spare copy of Hunters & Gatherers and dividing up the spare meeples (and any other components or tiles that you would want)?

I just had a very enjoyable game of The Adults Of Carcassonne with some friends. We sat out the back of our local pub and played with shots of Pimm's on a hot summer's night - very pleasant indeed :)

Here's a photo of the six of us, I'm on the right in the blue t-shirt:

As you can see, the table that we were playing on was quite thin given the size of the coasters but we just played that the edge completed features which worked just fine.

I scored 50 playing as green and came second to yellow who had 58 points. The more important statistic is that we finished 3 jugs of Pimm's over the course of the game!

Reviews & Session Reports / Mega Carcassonne game
« on: October 02, 2014, 12:57:33 AM »
Over the weekend I played a game of Mega Carcassonne with some friends from work. This included every official tile, except the ones from River III as I haven't yet acquired the newest Big Box! We also included Fritz_Spinne's Easter Bunny as it is now officially endorsed by HiG :)

That made a tile count of around 500 which took us 9 hours to play including a break for lunch. I'll try to add some more notes on the game at the weekend, but for now here is a photo of the finished board.

The winning score was just over 1000 points!

The Marketplace / WTB: CCCR tile from Abbey & Mayor
« on: February 18, 2014, 12:07:10 PM »
I am hoping to get a copy of this tile from Abbey & Mayor:

Unfortunately they don't have it at Cundco, which is where I have bought specific spare tiles before.

Does anyone have a spare one of these that they would be willing to sell me? Probably just looking to pay postage and a small amount more. I could just buy a whole copy of Abbey & Mayor but it seems a bit of a waste of all the other stuff...

Just for interest sake, the reason I want this tile is to recreate the animal tiles from the winter edition in the original game. I have equivalent tile for all of the others!

Unofficial Rules / La Porxada question
« on: February 07, 2014, 12:35:33 AM »
The second option for La Porxada is as follows (from S-CAR v6.4):

Quote
2) At the end of the game, any player who had a Knight in the city containing La Porxada may score all unfinished cities containing his or her followers as if they were finished.360 This scoring bonus will only occur if the city containing La Porxada is finished.361

When we last played this tile along with some other expansions there was an argument over what exactly was meant by "any player who had a Knight in the city containing La Porxada". There were a few different interpretations:

1. Any player who had a knight in the city at any time, which means that even if your knight is later removed from the city by the princess or the dragon or a corn circle, etc. then you should still get the bonus.

2. Any player who had a knight in the city when the city was completed, which means that removed knights do not get the bonus and neither do knights brought in via the City of Carcassonne (from The Count expansion), as the city is already completed when they are added.

3. Any player who had a knight in the city when the city was scored, which means that City of Carcassonne knights brought in to the city would get the bonus.

A strict reading of the rules would suggest that option 1 is correct (I think), but personally I feel that option 3 is correct according to the "spirit" of the rule.

Any opinions? Can we form a community consensus to add a clarification for the next CAR?

Reviews & Session Reports / Mega Carcassonne with all the expansions
« on: November 10, 2013, 04:38:34 PM »
I have just finished playing a game of Mega Carcassonne that included absolutey every tile from every official expansion up to and including Die Belagerer and the Spielbox Die Windrosen. Six of us played, taking over 9 hours!

I will try and write up a session report later in the week, but for now here is a picture of the final game.

Official Rules / Does the City of Carcassonne count for the King?
« on: November 09, 2013, 08:48:47 AM »
Very quick rules question. When scoring for the King (from King & Robber Baron) at the end of the game, do you get one point for the City of Carcassonne itself (from Count of Carcassonne)?

My guess is that you should, since this city is counted for farms at the end of the game, according to footnote 68 of S-CAR v6.3:

Quote
68 The city of Carcassonne does count when scoring farms at the end of the game.
