Thank you!

Yeah, I've been on pins and needles! Those algorithms to get picked up for promotion really kick-in if you can get funded within 48 hours! I hope the two extra hours I needed still count for something  ;D

... and eventually I will get some sleep  :o

Thanks for following along .. it looks like it's happening! It's a bit of a specialty product so was never a sure thing!

Best,

Thanks Tom!

Once again, I appreciate the forum space to speak about the game!

The game is on it's 2nd stop and I have a few other destinations planned but Tom please send me a PM with your address and I'll see you get to spend a bit of time with the game along the way. It will likely have to move onto a other locations but I'm more than happy for you to take a look  :)

All the best,

franks

It’s been a while my friends! I like what you’ve done to the place!

In a previous post Dan graciously offered me to share a project I’ve been working on and a little bit of what I’ve been up to. I hope this post is appropriate.

A good part of that time has been publishing and designing my first game called Pathways.

Covid has been brutal on the lives of many people and it has certainly shaken us up in one way or another. Sometimes challenges can also present opportunities and that is what happened in 2020.

As it happened I had most of 2020 off work since we were asked to clear out our holiday bank. Great, lots of time off and nowhere to go! I guess I’ll make the best of it!

With that free time I started walking 5 - 8 kms a day (3 – 5 miles). It was on these walks I put my mind to the idea of design. It’s always been in the back of my mind but never took it to seriously.

If I were to entertain the idea I wanted to start with something that wasn’t too complex and for me I narrowed that down to dexterity games or abstract games. Of course it isn’t as easy as that.

I have several games in both genres and I focused on what I liked (or didn’t like) with these style of games. With dexterity I prefer stripped down games like Crokinole and Carrom over larger thematic games like Flick ‘em up: Dead of Winter. Great game but I like the simple head to head challenge of a quick set up and play.

I like but don’t love abstracts. I’ve played a lot and what I don’t like are the one that end in dead-locks where who ultimately loses is the player who makes the first mistake. Of course this is just a personal preference and not all abstracts are like that and it isn’t to say those are bad games.

As I pondered all this, I had a wacky idea, could you mix the two genres, dexterity and abstract? It seemed pretty ridiculous. The two have very little in common other than both generally being theme-less and stripped down game design.

So I tried to take it quite literally; what if one were to flick a disk across a chessboard?  But, what would be the point of that? Without any resistance other than that from other disks there didn’t seem to be much of a point.

Looking at dexterity game design what I realized, there are usually some sort of impediments in play for both players. Think of the posts in Crokinole or the magnet balls in Klask, (a game I highly recommend by the way).

Back to flicking across the chessboard; how could I introduce an impediment as described? Add posts to the board? Somehow create divots in the board? It wasn’t making much sense until I focused on the idea of divots. Which brought me to; what if the chessboard pattern on the board were holes and as disks fell into the holes they would create new flat surfaces that would make follow up shots easier?

There it was; create a board with holes in a chessboard manner with the goal of getting from one side of the board onto the other. I was excited to see if I could fashion such a thing. I went home, made a template on graph paper and manually drilled 49 holes into a piece of board I found around the house. I dug out some Crokinole disks and set to try it out.

There is much more to the story than that but if you at all remember me when I was previously active here, I can be long winded so I won't go into the gory details of game development, just to say it was quite a journey!

Well here we are, almost two years later and the project is about to launch on Kickstarter, (March 15th). I am using that platform as intended; without funding this project likely won’t happen, even though I put a lot into development.

Special thanks to Dan and the other admins at CarcC for the opportunity to let you know what I have up to!

If this at all seems interesting, check out the links and hopefully I’ll be able to one day challenge you to a game of Pathways.

All the best, franks

Congratulations Dan, Tom & Hector!

Carc-C is certainly in good hands!

This is big enough news to put in a re-appearance! I've been busy myself but miss the friendly interaction around these parts!

I hope everyone is doing well and very glad to see that the community here is thriving!

All the best,

Franks

edited that darn spell check   ;D

I've lurkered and seen most everyones great new additions, posts and thought it was time to share these goodies that came today!

Not sure they could be any more opposites but such are my game tastes.

I played Blood Rage at a meet up and was blown away, how much I liked the game. I'm not usually one for 'Dudes on a map' but this is another recent exception, (along with Scythe - which is another new found love)!

Blood Rage with all the glorified window dressing of an Ameri-game, to me this has a deceptive Euro feel in the game play. I think what I like the best is the card play and the action selection / allowance system, these drive all your actions.  It is so much more than fighting on a board. The battling is very innovative and never felt to me like a miniature battle game. In Scythe the Euro feel is even more pronounced with full on resource management as a primary feature. Another suburb Euro-Ameri-game blend.

Haven't forgotten the New Carc iteration that I look forward to giving a trying  ;D
I also recently received a Cundco order of Barber-surgeons, new edition German Monasteries and First Class G Module!
Happy gaming  :yellow-meeple:

Being Dutch/Canadian I had to back this little game from Canada about a city in the Netherlands: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1812622835/town-builder-coevorden

The publisher is from Vancouver and I noticed this little snippet on Wikipedia about Coevorden: "The city of Coevorden may have indirectly given its name to the city of Vancouver, which is named after the 18th-century British explorer George Vancouver. The explorer's ancestors (and family name) may have originally come to England "from Coevorden" (van Coevorden > Vancoevorden > Vancouver).[5] There is also a family of nobility with the surname van Coeverden, sometimes spelled with a K (as with Canadian kayaker Adam van Koeverden)."

Huh! Interesting background on the city name, thanks for sharing, I wasn't aware of that. Sounds very plausible and likely!

I also decided to go into it with the low entry level $20CND, didn't quite see the value of doubling the price for the play mat. Big plus it plays solo though I have a Dutch Pal at work that will, I'm sure, enjoy this. He has been one the most enthusiastic recruits to my game group there. He hates when we miss a day due to the odd time that 'work' gets in the way  ::) :D

I have been on holiday and came home to a set today! I haven't unwrapped them yet and am contemplating the best storage solutions.
Anyone have an idea on how best to store these!?

Under cans of cider!

Right answer  ;D

Who said Carc can't be a drinking game!

I stored mine in my Catapult box. Was looking for my Tower box but couldn’t find it. Perfect length and height for the tiles in 3 stacks, with a little extra width that I used part of the insert from that box to take up.

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll give that a try!

Decar, nice arrivals! I like the idea of Kitchen Rush but would like to try before a buy. Let us know your thoughts, when you get the chance!

Sinscerly, I recently played a great round of Isle of Skye with all mini expansion tiles in and it played really nicely. The tunnel tiles can come in handy! Enjoy!

Chartreusito, I've been soooo tempted by 7th Continent but decided to choose between that and Gloomhaven. I chose the later but still hope to get the chance to play someone else's copy of 7th Continent.  >:D

Decar, maybe that was more of a remark that a question  :)

I don't mind mentioning, and am happy to report, that I started an early retirement about 3 months ago. I now work three days a week and after an initial adjustment to the new schedule and a very long Honey-do list, the extra time off has vastly improved my play time  :)

On top of that, the work group I started has also helped, (and still continues with the new hours). Finally I've been regularly attending local board game meet-up groups. I would recommend any combination of the above to get more games in  :)

Saying all that, I should be honest with myself that I'll probably never get all of my collection played but I'm having fun trying!  ::)  :D

Latest haul,

My wife is from Newfoundland not New Found Land! I couldn't pass up this is HiG original. I won't be taking it with me but we are off to my wife's hometown for a wedding in a couple of weeks. I like what I've seen so far of, The Rise of Fenris!

We enjoy Century: Spice Road and are looking forward to this followup title. I'm currently enamoured with 7 Wonders and look forward to this expansion as well.

Still not done collecting Carc! I've enjoyed Choose-your-own-adventure style games and House of Danger looks interesting!

Cheers,

I see your point though I think they are very different beasts. I also think if Uwe were to do 'Creatures' all over again, he might now have a different take on the game. He might have evolved his thoughts on a micro game or maybe this is a progression in his (devolution) design  :o  ;D

'Creatures' is the 1st 'Gric' iteration my wife and I played and had a good number of games. I never really saw this as a light game. Even now, I think if I go through the effort we might as well play the full game set. I'm sure Uwe was trying to keep that tight, stressful experience of the Big game.

CvC is so easy and light that it fits that slot of a filler, where 'Creatures' is a bigger game in a smaller box. So I still have a soft spot for the game but also unlikely to get play time, maybe for different reasons!

While I really like CvC, I'm really looking forward to the expansions to freshen up the game a bit.

Mikeagan, thanks for posting.

This pull out quote is the most intriguing, "... new options for playing in the bitter cold of winter".

I shouldn't really be that interested in the release already having everything released to date but for the love of the game I am sorely tempted  ;D

Overall this is great news for anyone looking to get into the game. In regards to the price, sadly, it seems to be in-line or nearly on par with many new releases, (especially where Zman and Asmodee is concerned).
