Title: Polish rules for Bridges, Castles and Bazaars
Post by: asparagus on May 24, 2014, 04:15:59 PM
Today we played Carcassonne with some Polish friends of my wife who have an extensive Carcassonne collection but are fairly unfamiliar with the rules. Their rules are of course in Polish. As it happens I have enough Polish to get upset at what my mother-in-law says which happens to be about enough Polish to follow the Carcassonne rules. The only English rules I could check against at the time where some Z-man rules I found on the internet.

And I found a few discrepancies in the rules.

1.) The rules for who can place a castle only talk about "the player" ("gracz"). This is inadequately ambiguous and indeed the CAR, Z-man and my rules all insist it is the owner of the castle.

2.) The Z-man rules state that a player may not bid more points than he has, but all the other sources I can find do allow a player to go negative. One player did actually go to -3 as I drew a bazaar tile as the first tile.

Another question. Surely a two tile besieged city turned into a castle would be worth 8 points (and possibly more depending on pigs) to farmers.

Translation of the German rule from the publisher HiG (MAROON: my own words):
"If a player is building a small city - two half round city segments - then the owner of this small city can decide if he scores the small city (4 points) or if he update this small city into a castle. If the owner (of this small city) build the castle he places one of his castle tokens on the top of the citiy and puts that follower into the castle which already stands on that small city. A small city which is updated into a castle is not finished...."

(some explanation: updated means here build a small city into a castle)

The player who is the owner of the small city can decide if he build a castle...
After building the castle, the player is the owner of the castle...

It is easier for us if you translate the written polish rule - that complete part of the rule...
Sorry I have not the polish rule...

What are your rules? I do not understand this...
Do you have the English rules from the publisher Rio Grande Games?

good point  ;D

Translation of the German rule - HiG:
"At the beginning of the game, it is possible that the player have less than 0 points through the bazaar."

Z-man Games rule:
"A player may not bid more points than he has..."

Sorry. By "my rules" I meant my copy of the rules (Rio Grande). I also can only quote the Polish (MindOK) rules from memory at the moment. I did check the MindOK site but it was only in Czech and had no pdfs. I do not speak Czech though I do have some conception of how sounds change between Czech and Polish.

h -> g
v -> w
l -> l (with a line through it).

I doubt that would be enough to read Czech Carcassonne rules in Czech.
