Title: National Carcassonne Championships in 2015
Post by: jungleboy on December 16, 2014, 05:53:32 AM
I thought it would be a good idea to have a catch-all thread for 2015 national Carcassonne championships throughout the year. Post dates, locations, links and other information here, and if you compete in one, post your experience here too!

To begin with, I believe the UK Carcassonne Championships will be held at the UK Games Expo (http://www.ukgamesexpo.co.uk) in Birmingham on the weekend of May 29-31. Our very own danisthirty competed in 2014 and I'm sure he will continue to compete every year until daniseighty.

It looks like the Australian Carcassonne Championships will be held in July as part of the
Toy and Game Expo (http://www.toyandgameexpo.com.au) in Sydney. The dates for 2015 don't seem to have been fixed yet, but the Carcassonne championship is part of the wider Australian Boardgaming Championships (http://tournaments.toyandgameexpo.com.au).

If you have any other news about 2015 national championships, please let us know.

Good idea jungleboy, thanks for this!  :)

Further information regarding the format of the UK Carcassonne championships (and results) can be found here:

http://www.halesowenboardgamers.org.uk/expotournaments/2014/overall.htm

...and here:

http://www.halesowenboardgamers.org.uk/expotournaments/2014/carcassonne.htm

I don't know whether the championship will follow the same format next year or not, but some months ago I contacted Halesowen Boardgamers to suggest an alternative format based on a series of head-to-head games rather than 4-player "crapshoots" (as jungleboy so accurately described them).

If you're in the UK and are thinking about taking part in this then I can definitely recommend it! Udo Schmitz from Carcassonne on Tour will be presenting the trophy to the winner and has assured me that there will be "a few surprises for the participants" as well.  :(y)

See you there!  ;) :(y)

I notice that the Australian tournament is 2-player games only, with the final being staged as a best-of-three format. The rules are here (http://tournaments.toyandgameexpo.com.au/index.php/game-rules/carcassonne-rules).

Chile will hold its national championship in July 2015, though it's not an open championship and you must qualify first. The qualification tournaments will be 4-player, base-game only. Details (in Spanish) are at Devir Chile (http://www.devir.cl/calendario-de-torneos-clasificatorios-al-nacional-de-carcassonne-2015/).

Classification tournaments are also beginning in Spain, although the date and location of the National Championship has not yet been announced (likely to be in June or July). More details (in Spanish) at the blog of
Carcassonne Pieza de Inicio (http://carcassonnepiezadeinicio.blogspot.ch/2014/02/torneos-clasificatorios-de-carcassonne.html), who is also a member here.

The date for the UK Carcassonne championship has now been officially announced - Sunday 31st May, 10am to 3pm (up to 52 players):

http://www.ukgamesexpo.co.uk/game.php?id=BOR1097

Unfortunately it's being run in the same way as it was last year. I can't see the sense in this considering that the top prize is the opportunity to represent the UK at the world championships and the world championships are run as a series of head-to-head matches, but... well, whatever.

PS - you can't buy tickets yet as the status for all events at the Expo is "Pre Booking Closed". I don't think this means they've all sold out already, I think it's more that they're not yet available...

Quote from: UK Games Expo Website
When do I pay?

Public entry tickets can be paid for on the door or booked online now.

Event ticket booking will go live March 16th 2014.

I have been unable to find any information on a Canadian Carcassonne championship.

Anyone aware of anything for us poor, neglected residents of the Great White North????

It looks as though Snakes and Lattes (http://www.snakesandlattes.com) in Toronto has hosted this championship in the past, so maybe keep an eye out on their website or their Facebook page.

They originally gave a date in March but the miniatures games went on sale about a week ago and the boardgames today. They sent out emails to let people know the earlier dates.

March, 22 in Bordeaux during Les Nomades du Jeu
March, 28-29 in Grenoble during Place au Jeu
March, 28-29 in Mons en Baroeul during Ludinord

Thanks for this information Lobo. Are you participating? I can't make any of these dates this year but maybe next year! Since I live in Geneva it would be nice for me if there was a preliminary round in Lyon :)

Meanwhile, good luck MrNumbers!

Hi! I'm the organizer of the 2015 Norwegian Carcassonne Championship, which will be held at Arcon games festival in Oslo on Saturday June 20th. The format will be twoplayer, 6 rounds Swiss system, followed by semifinals, final and 3rd place match. Only the base set will be used. The winner will qualify for the World Championship at Spiel 2015 in Essen, but unfortunately will have to pay all expences him/her self. More information can be found on our Facebook event: https://www.facebook.com/events/406088149544410/ (sorry, Norwegian only). All players are welcome to participate, but only Norwegian citizens/residents may qualify for the semifinals. I will also organize the Norwegian Stone Age Championship on Sunday June 21st, for those interested in that game.

I could not believe this! I received a confirmation of my registration from the French organisers. In the email they included a link to the rules "you should know in order to participate" as they say.... But these rules are so old (2 pts for small cities also very old way of scoring farmers!).  I asked them if the link (http://jeuxstrategie.free.fr/Carcassonne_complet.php) was sent by mistake and indeed, it appears that they couldn't find more recent rules online.  I looked myself and couldn't find either so I am bringing my own paper rulebook to work and scan it there, and then will send to Ludinord organisers.

There are 14 (of 52) tickets currently available to the UK championships. And since they’re only £6 each I’m considering purchasing them all! At least this way, I stand a chance of getting into the top 10 again provided I get drawn to play against myself enough times...  :))

Today I was at the National championship group stage round. We were 38 participants, divided onto two groups. I was in group A, as well as the winner of both previous championships. I won 4 games from 6, both games lost to the same person (woman), who told about herself that she don't know how to play and she plays just randomly. I came 4th in my group and took last ticket to QF, which will take place on May, 10.
Today I haven't met with previous champion in qualification games, but we played 4 friendly games: the result is 2-2. So I still have a chance to beat him in finals! :D

Congratulations on reaching the next round of the competition MrNumbers!

Regarding the woman who said she didn’t know how to play and just played randomly (but beat you twice) I met a similar person at the UK championships last year. I didn’t actually play him in the end as he had come to the wrong table, but the four of us were chatting before he got moved to the correct table and he said he’d hardly ever played Carcassonne yet ended up coming 2nd overall.

I don’t know whether some people prefer to be modest about their playing skill, or maybe they’re being honest but are just very lucky (unlikely), or maybe they just pretend to be less experienced than they are because they think it gives them a psychological advantage. This is an area I am very inexperienced in so I’m going to take everything that anyone tells me about themselves with a grain of salt and don’t intend to make any allowances for anyone who declares themselves to be a “beginner”.

Maybe you should try a bit of psychological mind games yourself Dan. "No, I hardly ever play Carcassonne. I don't organize online competitions or anything like that ... (Awkward laugh). I'd never buy 300 meeples of myself ... would you?"

Meanwhile I am still trying to find out information about the Swiss championships. This page here  (http://www.spielezentrum.de/Carcassonne/CC-2015Engl/E-CCWC2015-countries.html)regarding the world championships gives a link to the Suisse Toy (http://www.suissetoy.ch/desktopdefault.aspx/tabid-219) fair in late September / early October in Bern. So I think this could be it (it's very shortly before Essen), but I couldn't find any information about a Carcassonne championship on the French version of the site. And I couldn't find anything on a quick google search (other than some kind of tournament in the "sächsischen Schweiz") either. The start was good for me. My QF game was against 11-years old kid, who, however, has won his group B. We started to fight for a huge city, which was growing more and more. When we had 4 followers each in that city, my opponent tried to connect another (circle on the image), but there was only one tile remaining in the bag, which I successfully drew afterwards (red arrow). He was out of meeples and I continued to gain some points. I won with almost 30 points gap.

In semifinal I have played against my QF opponent's older brother (and national champion in 2012). It was a big fight for the huge farm, but I managed to block one of his connects (circle), as no tiles left with such configuration. The last tile was cloister with road (circle), which connected both of our farmers. As a result - almost +20 points win for me.

Meantime, 2013 and 2014 years champion was going up through his games: he won QF by 2 points and SF - by 3 points. So, big final again! He has a good start and quickly went ahead in points, so I was trying to chase him throughout all game. As a result, we had 18-points farm, and 2 tiles were left in the bag (arrows), and I needed one of them to win the game by connecting third farmer (circle). And... I drew the wrong one...  :'( Third year in a row Aleksejs Pegushevs became Latvian champion and I stayed just 2nd. His winning streak is 25 matches by now.

Well, there is always next year :)

P.S. Now I know how Leonardo DiCaprio feels ;D

Better luck next year!

Wow! Three years in a row and this one on a lucky 50/50 draw. There is luck for you. You can never know. But still, a 25 game win streak, and close ones of 2 and 3 point wins. He must be doing something right.

Great effort Mr. Numbers! Nice pictures and naration too.

Oh, wow the trophy is amazing (and also the Catan-Trophy you cut of is great!) I'd love to own both of them. :D

So I think this could be it (it's very shortly before Essen).

I just received a reply from the Suisse Toy organisers who say they there won't be a Carcassonne tournament at their event this year. So I'm not sure if that means that there won't be a Swiss national championship this year at all or not.

I would take this as an invitation to organise one yourself!

Cool, good luck if you're 'allowed' to play :) I assume the championships are in Lisbon? Maybe I'll join next year :)

In 3 games 2 wins and one loss.
3 more games to go.
It's a "Swiss Style"!? Tournament so the top4 at the end of the 6 games will go to the semi finals.

3 wins 3 losses  ended up at 11th (of 24).
Same spot as the last CC-League must be my lucky spot.

Not complaining about you guys but it was really nice to play the first "in person" games in 4 or 5 years.

11th out of 24 is still in the top half. Well done on your achievement!  :) :(y)

I agree. If I had a bunch of friends who were just as keen on obsessive about Carc as I am, and had both time and enthusiasm to play as often as I'd like to, I probably wouldn't play online at all. The trouble is that very few (probably none) of us are in that situation so playing online is a good way of getting plenty of practice and having fun regardless!

Sadly, I will be in Toronto just 3 weeks after this date. Won't be able to make it out before then!

Regardless, I look forward to the outcome!
