Title: Carcassonne first edition?? Is it first edition?
Post by: JoeSesquipedalian on February 16, 2016, 10:42:55 AM
Hello meeples.

I recently purchased what appears to be an early edition of Carcassonne, possibly first edition.  The box is sealed, so at the moment I don't want to open it to check the contents.

The one that I purchased does not have the red award badge on the front of the box.  Also, it shows the 70-point scoreboard on the back of the box and has a copyright date of 2000.

Is there a way to check if this a true first edition Carcassonne without having to open the box to check and see if the 70-point scoreboard is indeed inside?

Can you show as a picture of it?
It might help!

This certainly seems to be the thing that everyone is hunting for at the moment!

I'm afraid I don't know how to tell the difference, but I would definitely be interested to see pictures and also to know where you got it from? :)

Here are the photos.  I purchased from ebay in US.

The two things that stand out for me are that there is a woman on the front of your box, rather than a man. And also that it says it includes the River whereas mine doesn't. I don't know whether this means it is or isn't a first edition, but there are differences nonetheless.

Hope this helps. I expect Decar will give us a definitive answer... C:-)

Yes, the River was released in 2001. This is not a first edition.

The best way to check is to look at the scoretrack, I doubt you'll find an unopened copy.

Well, at least I'll have a box that pictures the 70-point scoreboard!    :red-meeple: :orange-meeple: :yellow-meeple: :green-meeple: :blue-meeple: :@

The info at the bottom is slightly different. In fact, everything in the Schmidt Spiele box has slight variances. Obviously the images are also different, with one having the 70pt track and the other the 50pt track, but I wonder if that Schmidt Spiele section has any notably differences that could help determine whether there is a 70pt or 50pt track in the box for the cases in which there is a 70pt track on back.

I bought one recently with the 70 point track on the reverse but a 50 point track inside.  It was still in cellophane so worth the risk as my base game was ZMAN with the inferior tiles that wear very quickly.
