Title: Charity Auction
Post by: Rosco on February 26, 2020, 03:01:00 PM
Hi all

It has been a while since i was on the forum and it seems to have been fairly busy.

In the next few weeks I am going to set up some charitable auctions of Carcassonne items and some other non Carcassonne gaming things.  My plan is to offer them here first.

My first request is to ask if any of you have anything you would like to donate to the auction - Carcassonne or not.

The reason for this is that I am doing an insane running challenge to complete all 4 home nation 24hr mountain running challenges back to back - 152 summits, 250 miles, 3.5 times the height of Everest in 96 hrs of running. This is a world first as well so I am pretty excited by it.

I am aiming to raise £15,000 for charity - for CALM, The Dogs Trust and Mountain Rescue.

I have a Virgin money giving page - https://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/RossJENKIN2

So if you would like to donate a game/game related item, donate some cash, or are interested in the auctions, please get in touch.

I have been promised a couple of things from Danisthirty, and Udo Schmidt is sending something too.

I even have a donation from Klaus himself and Doris!

Who else would like to offer anything for sale?  An option would also be to offer a percentage of a sale to the charitable fund.

Hello,
How can I participate into the auction??
Title: Re: Charity Auction
Post by: Rosco on February 28, 2020, 06:03:03 AM
I will post different items one at a time on the forum.  Anyone who wishes can then send me a private bid.

I will have an idea of a reserve for each item and will accept the highest bid.

I know some of the items are available online in some places if you hunt for them but remember that this is for charity.

Hi Rosco,

I hope that you reach your goal!!!

When do you plan to start?

Will it be a complete blind flight with the bids? Some weeks ago there was a auction on the German Carcassonne forum. They published the highest bid till 4 hours to auction end. So only the Last 4 hours were a blind flight. Through publishing always the highest bid everybody were able to think about his bid. They had also a mechanism when 2 or more have the same highest bid at the end. The highest bidder with the most posts in the forum got the item.
Do you have something similar in place?

I miss some items and hope to complete my collection, so I’m excited what items you got.

Best

Here are the rules of the auction:

1.  Anyone can bid and they can bid as many times as they like on as many things that they like
2.  one item will be available at a time.  no other item will be available for bids until the previous one is sold.
3.  Bids will be sent to me by private message. I will publish the highest bid up until the final 12 hours (approx) when the highest amount will be hidden.
4.  There is a reserve on every item - this is for charity and as such items may have higher reserves than if the money was going in my pocket.
5.  On completion of the auction, the winner will be informed by private message and will be expected to pay into my Virgin Money Giving account with 48 hrs of receipt of the winners email.
6.  Postage for UK winners, for small items will be paid by me.  For larger items and postage abroad, postage will need to be paid to me by paypal.
7.  In the event that 2 or more people bid the exact same amount, they will all be messaged to tell them and they may have one final bid each and if there are matching bids again, then the first bid received will win the auction.

I have never done this before, so there may be things i havent thought of and as such i am open to suggestions.  Remember that this is for charity, you may be able to buy things elsewhere, and maybe buy them cheaper, but i will do my best to make the auction lots unique in some way.

Good luck everyone!!

I will be following the auction and plan on bidding if I see something of interst,; I love the idea!

On the first lot: Windrosen 1 is the rarer of the 2 versions.
I've had quite some issues finding this one a few years back! Later HiG made it available again in their webshop, but it is now no longer available from them.
A great start!
Good luck!

Hi Rosco,

I plan also to participate. Do you want the bids in €, $ or £?
Please answer on my previous questions. What happen when to have the same bid?
Is bidding a complete blind flight or do follow the model of The German Carcassone forum?

Good luck

Keep in mind that this is a game before it was later renamed to Carcassone Junior.
You can also imagine that games for child’s are normally not sealed so it is a rare game.

AND

it’s a charity auction

There have been a couple f bids but below the reserve.   This is brand new and cost me about £20 ish therefore I must make at least a bit more than that.  If no higher bids come in for it before 9am it will go on eBay.

Many thanks

Rossco, interesting to find we have more than Carcassonne in common! (Although I don't think I'm ever going to venture into ultra territory - I have enough unfinished business with the marathon!)

I've promoted your Virgin giving page a little using Twitter this morning. Do you have a Twitter account? (I'm @cicerunner.)

Lot 4.

This is a donation from Danisthirty.

The boxed Liepzig Expansion was a limited edition and the ones wig certificates were even more limited - only 600 copies!

Here there are 2 x boxed Liepzig expansions with certificates.

You will bid on one copy.  The top 2 bidders will get a copy and the highest bidder will be able to choose the certificate they want.

These are a really hot item.

Please bid generously.

Auction will end on Saturday at about midday GMT.

Are you asking how many meeples are in each box?

As for photos, the only two angles I didn't cover are the two ends. Do you want photos of those?

Oops! I realised belatedly that the photo was just of the box from four sides. In that case, yes, how many meeples are in each box and what colours?

Hi all.

I would like to say Thank you for supporting this auction.  However I must say that some of the items are worth a lot more than is being offered.  I would be doing my charities (And Dan who donated this lot) a big dis-service should I let them go for so little.  I have heard that these can go for as much as £70.  I do not suggest that we need to get there but £25 will not cut it.

So get bidding folks.

Many thanks

Just speaking for the plebs out there (who may or may not have pledged £25): money is tight these days, jobs don't pay as much as they once did in regards to purchasing power, and when it comes down to it, these are just cardboard tiles and wooden pieces. Yes they have collectible value and yes they are quite rare, but some of these are also available with fewer features for cheaper and we can only bid what we are able to bid. I am personally only interested in the novelty of the Leipzig box and set of meeples because I already have the tiles. I don't particularly care about signed/autographed copies of things (like, at all), although the collectors certificate is a nice touch, but that does not in itself solicit a bid from me. The charity aspect is better, but I already donate to several charities each year and don't actually make enough to warrant a tax deduction anyway, so that isn't a major motivator either.

If the amount users can bid doesn't meet expectations, then perhaps this community is just not large or wealthy enough for an auction format such as this to work. I know that's not the most encouraging news, but it's where we're at.

Looking forward to seeing what other items you have in store Rosco. You're supporting some great causes and taking on the UK's peaks is something else!
Title: Re: Charity Auction
Post by: Rosco on March 13, 2020, 03:03:00 PM
Thanks for you comment.  I totally agree with everything you have said.  I would rather someone on here gets these items at a reasonable price whilst the charities get some cash than for them to go on eBay.

I am happy to let them sell at less than the eBay price but for the sake of the charities, I think a reserve is needed.

For example, the Liepzig Expansion could sell on eBay for maybe £70 but I am happy for it to go considerably cheaper on here but within reason.

So please bid what you can and if I don't feel it is enough I will add the remaining items as fixed price sales.

Many thanks for everyone's support.

I hear what you're saying whaleyland, but I don't necessarily agree with all of it. You're right that people don't seem to be spending big on anything Carcassonne related these days, but while there are still people in the world who will charge (and get) £100+ for 2 tiles (I'm thinking of Russian promo tiles) or £600 for the base game because it comes in a really nice box I don't think it's especially optimistic to expect more than £25 for very rare items like these that many of us here were getting very excited about not so many years ago. Not least of all because all the money is going to charities.

Post by: Rosco on March 21, 2020, 05:16:10 AM
Due to Corona Virus I know a lot of people may be down on their luck financially and as such I feel it would be unfair to keep hassling you all to pay money to my charities.

What I suggest is to keep the auction running and if anyone wants something, and bids a fair price, they will be sent the item and if they need some time to pay, or would like to pay half now and half in a couple of months, that is fine.  I want to help my charities still, especially as the other events I planned for fund raising now can't happen, so I will be doing what I can.

Any items that haven't sold will be listed with a fixed price at the end.

The next lot is a good one!!

It will be posted later today.

I totally get it.

It is a difficult time, particularly for self employed and freelancers.

I would like to make this available to everyone so if finances are tight and you want to bid on something, I am happy to wait for the payment.  Am of course I will be sensitive about it.

Having further thought about the situation and in light of new restrictions in the uk (I won't be able to leave the house to post things),  I am suspending the auction until movement and work restrictions are lifted.

I will post a list of what has not been sold as yet and what I would expect to raise from them so people can save some pennies to bid if the items excite them enough.

I CANNOT post anything for the next few weeks.

Many thanks for you support so far.

Trouble is that many people don't have any or much income at the moment so money spent on board game collectibles is not too of the list.  It is better to wait a while so people feel more able to spend and i can post within a couple of days of the auction.

(I think) so far you've given updates on how items are going and then kept the final bids secret within a few hours of the close and selling.
Are you able to update us on what each of the Spiel tiles are currently up to? (If I'm out of line, just say no, I won't mind.)

Cheers

Just a quick message to the winning bidders of Lot 4 (boxed Leipzig expansions with certificates). They are still sitting safely on my desk at the moment, in all their glory. Understandably, I haven't been able to get to the post office in the last few weeks as I, along with most of the rest of the world, have been staying at home avoiding all unnecessary travel. Rosco has passed your details on to me though, and I will get them posted out as soon as the situation has improved. Thanks for your patience! :)

Ok, so I received an amazing parcel from Udo who is very well connected in the Carcassonne world and I now have some even more amazing items for the auction.

I have photographed everything I have in my possession to sell for the charities and I have added the pictures here.  Danisthirty still has some spiel tiles and Decar has a non Carcassonne game as well.

These items will be auctioned in the coming months when things get a little more back to normal and people will be more able to spend on non essentials.

Some of these are truly unique and special collectables BUT I have made the decision that I will sell the donated items at whatever they go for - no reserve.

Start saving if there is anything you see that you want and when the auction starts up again, you can start bidding.

I hope that your families and friends are ok in these troubling times and that you are also looking after yourselves and your mental health.  I know I have had some tough days recently but I run to feel better.  Run, cycle, walk, speak to friends, sing, paint, read, dance, do whatever you need, just keep well.  (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200405/a40b04c044cc5f480e96a8e526207e5d.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200405/a9a0372b6258cfc0a2761e807315d513.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200405/18388fe25cbeb7b32198a5361dbebed4.jpg)

Hi All

I feel the time has come to auction some amazing stuff and raffle a couple of them as well.

As a reminder, I am doing an insane running challenge at some point this year but due to COVID19 I currently dont know when i will be starting - the challenge totals 400km, 152 summits, 3.5 times the height of everest in around 100hrs of running!

I am raising money for CALM, The Dogs Trust, and Mountain Rescue and below is the fundraising page.

https://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/RossJENKIN2

The auction has some truly amazing items which have been donated by various people including, Decar, Danisthirty, myself, Klaus Jurgen Wrede, Doris Matthaus, and Udo Schmittz.

The format is that i will post a couple of items on the list as and when an item sells.  Each auction will last about a week or two and I will sell for whatever the highest bid is - within reason!

In addition to the bid, the postage (including insurance) will be paid - and the total will be paid into the Virgin page above.

The next item to be sold is a signed KJW cup mat and a tea light holder.

Minimum bid is £10

There are also 2 lots, each with a luggage tag and a signed KJW cup mat.

Minimum bid for each is £10

The next item in the auction is a very special thing.  The creator of the game we all love kindly donated some original artwork from his design of South Seas.  This is a very limited edition item which you will struggle to find anywhere, worldwide.

I have 2 to auction and this is the first - give this the respect it deserves.

You have 2 weeks from today and I will do my best to keep the high bids updated on here.

Good luck(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200621/a31d4e55471943e043b03aacaad50a9a.jpg)

Hi all.

I apologise for the long gap.  I have been very much caught up with lots of different things - lots of run training, work, family, Big 4 at 40 logistics, DIY and more recently BGA Carcassonne arena (this is the least necessary but most fun).

I will now put up for auction a Doris Matthaus original art piece.  I will add a new photo shortly.

But Ross send me a pm yesterday it’s ok :-)

Good day fellow Carcassonnites!

I apologise for the lack of communication over recent weeks - it has been a rather busy and stressful time working towards the actual running challenge.  I finished in a manner of speaking on saturday having had a bit of an epic and ending with severe tendonitis in my shins/ankles.  I am still struggling to walk but what i achieved under the circumstances was increcible.

Now on with the auction.

we were last bidding on the incredible art work by Doris Mathaus.

1: with a road - currently at £125
2: with the grey 'City' - currently at £100

i feel i may have forgotten a bid from someone - if i have please let me know.  bidding will finish on friday and i will post by the following monday.
