Are you a cardboardist or a squarist?
« on: April 17, 2016, 04:39:46 PM »
I have tried to coin the terms for greater clarity here: http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=2631.msg38878#msg38878

For clarity

Cardboardism is the idea that for the purposes of scoring and movement, a tile is a piece of cardboard.
Squarism is the idea that for the purposes of scoring and movement, a tile is a square.

Here is another attempt to spell out what is meant: http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=2633.msg38953#msg38953

Squarism - otherwise interaction with any other expansions becomes overly complicated and simply bizarre.

And all other opinions are objectively wrong :)

I don't even remember which side I took last time we debated this (back when we were one-tilers and two-tilers). Just put me down as whatever Dan is. :)

Maybe we should have an "is this a palm tree?" poll.

Facts are NOT determined by opinion polls.

HiG have declared the one-tile rule.

I totally agree that what HiG have declared is an objective fact. No amount of opinion polls changes that. But the world does not collapse if people refuse to follow those rules. You can ask how will people actually play these expansions.

I am not happy that point with the cardboard has a negative suggestion from the starter of this poll.

The fraction with the 2tiles for German Castle tile put not existed rules in their thoughts.
The German Castle has nothing to do with the game mechanics like the castle from Bridges,Castles and Bazaars.

And the triangle tiles - I personally don't like to talk about this expansion. OK how many points are two Halflings worth if on two Halfling is a road segment and the road extends?

We should ask those guys in reddit  :)

Uniformity in the community is more important to me. The general concensus at the moment is that some of the HiG rulings are a little odd.  We would be better to work as a community to find the inconsistencies with the current ruling  to convince HiG that there as many ugly corner cases with their proposed solution.  Unfortunately old ground is covered again and again and quite simply they have already responded to those concerns. They look no further because 'you' obviously didn't hear what they said.

I conform to the ruling by not playing with Halflings or German Castles. That way I don't have to worry what the ruling was.

Footnotes 406-409 of the CAR (v7.4) make various clarifications that two halflings in one space counts as one tile. Where did this come from? Have HiG officially overruled that now?

I am definitely a "squarist". For me that makes all of the rule decisions very clear and consistent, that is how I will always play these expansions.

Yes kettlefish confirmed with Georg Wild at Essen last year.  The CAR has yet to be updated on the matter because there are many inconsistencies and obvert felt there was more left to uncover.

According to the CAR footnote 406, this would be 1 point. I personally agree with that as making the most sense. It sounds like that has been overruled to be 2 points now.

the triangle tiles - perhaps we need a new scoreboard with halfpoints...

And the rule from the base game need an update: the rule with the roads and how to score a road...

In a round about way this is actually squarist, whilst calling itself cardboardist.

I am not happy that point with the cardboard has a negative suggestion from the starter of this poll.
I am not quite sure if I understand this correctly, but I believe the implication is that the term "cardboardist" is insulting to cardboardists by implying that they are 2-dimensional. I cannot accept that for three reasons:

1. The term clearly does not apply to the person.
2. Even if it did it could be taken humorously.
3. "Square" when applied to a person would be just as insulting, since it means "unfashionable".

I'm neither party because I don't think either party is fully correct.

As I said, I think we would be better to find the corner cases and put forward however many arguments are required to explain them and then kindly ask kettlefish to ask HiG of their ruling at Essen this year.  We do not need to visit questions that she has already been asked unless they feel it is absolutely necessary.

It's not about the names. She is referring to this part: 'yielding unexpected conclusions and unresolved questions'. You presented the poll in a way that makes a person look silly for voting cardboardist. I don't even know anymore where I stand on this issue but basically, when you create a poll, you shouldn't try to influence people with the options you present based on your own opinion. e.g. when I made a poll about Carcassonne II and included 'I like the new artwork' (or something similar) as an option, I didn't put 'even though no sane person could possibly like this vomit pizza art' after it.
