Hi guys!
Another year passed by and I am sure you are ready for another challenge, which is know as The World Cup of Carcassonne Central, 2017 edition.
Previous World Cups were hosted by Danisthirty, but I always was "behind the curtain", so the fact that I am hosting it now doesn't change much :)
For whose, who isn't familiar with the format, please, check out 2014 (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=829), 2015 (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=2012) and 2016 (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=2907.0) World Cups.
Like in previous years, competition will consist of a group stage, followed by a knock-out stage with the top 2 players from each group qualifying to quarterfinals, winners advance to semifinal and the most experienced ones will play in Grand Finale!
A lot will depend on how many people will be taking part, but be sure you'll see Inns & Cathedrals, Traders & Builders, Princess & Dragon, The Tower, Abbey & Mayor, Bridges, Castle & Bazaars, River 1 & 2 and most of the mini-expansions supported by the current version of JCloisterZone occurring at least once each! Stay tuned for more specific information.
One thing I want to change (as much as it is possible) is following the terms, which will be given for playing your games. I already had made some difficult decisions about disqualifications and forfeiting games in the past and World Cup won't be an exception. Of course, everyone of us could have some force majeure and it is totally understandable, but you need to be at least in contact with your opponent or me, so we could find a solution together. Long story short, if you feel you won't be able to play all your games till the end of the competition, think twice before applying to World Cup 2017 C:-) And, of course, make sure you have read our "Unwritten rules" - Code of Conduct (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=2700) and are prepared to stick to it as closely as possible.
We had 40 participants in 2015 (unbeaten record), so why can't we beat it this year?
One more thing - I have some prizes to choose from, so be sure your win won't stay unnoticed :D Maybe even, prizes won't be for the first place only... O:-)
Needless to say - I’m in! :(y)

Can I join?
Of course! Welcome! :(y)
-
Let's see who's going to be the next owner of the World Cup trophy which is currently standing in my living room ^-^. I'd like to make an attempt to keep it there, so I'm in. :(y)
-
I'm in. ;D
-
This is the most exciting thing I've seen on the forums all day!
Many thanks for going to the trouble of organising it MrNumbers! 8) :(y)
I am most definitely in!
-
Great news! I’m in!
Is there an entry deadline and/or proposed start date?
-
I am not sure! I have not missed a competition since the beginning but the last couple led to me not really enjoying myself because of my frustration with how bad I was playing so I will think about it!

I enjoyed the last 2 Leagues a lot so i'm keen on giving this one a try as well! (hopefully, I'll do better, though)
But same question as Jungleboy: any idea of start date and the timing of the different phases?

In!! :green-meeple: :yellow-meeple: :red-meeple: :red-meeple:

I'm sure that many of us would really miss you. Even if you had some bad luck recently, I felt that you were always a tough opponent, and we played very exciting games.
By the way, is there anyone other than you who took part in all competitions since the first world cup? (I suppose MrNumbers and danisthirty are two candidates for that.)

Very well said Leven; I agree 100%!

I think it's just the three of us left... :'(
-
If it is only us three, I can't leave the fold! I will play but I am going to play for fun - no pressure on myself.

Forgot to answer to this.
The plan is to set entry deadline to 19.11 (2 weeks overall). Accordingly, we could start at 20.11-21.11.

OK, that sounds good. I'll be back home from South Africa on the 28th, but I might be able to play some games while I'm here too.

Thank you, MrNumbers. We, Belgians aren't quite great in any World Cup but hereby, I'll try to change that statistic. And so will Piet_Agoras. >:D >:D

Oh you guys!
I will represent Mozambique if no one objects, since I recently visited there. This allows me to stay in the (former) Portuguese empire but not offend my colonial master / postman Chooselife.
-
World Cup without Germany? No way. So count me in :)
-
C'mon people, a world cup with only 12 participants?! Even in the first World Cup football in 1930 they managed to get 13 participants... ??? We can do better!
-
Well, I don't know if I have enough time, otherwise I would love to represent The Netherlands
-

I too hope that more people will join in, but without wishing anyone to join who might not be able to play all of their games in good time of course...
-
And it appears that I'm the only one on this side of the Atlantic. ???
-
Another random question: how will you populate the initial groups without up-to-date Elo ratings for each player? We need... Jere! 8) :(y)
-
Sorry, guys, I was away from forums for a couple of days. Now I am back C:-)
I am upset too with the current amount of participants. I will consider to write a PM to all previous World Cup participants, maybe they just missed the news? ???
And that automatically prolongs registration deadline at least till the end of the week.
-
Thanks for the PM MrNumbers. The tournament does sound fun, but regretfully I'll have to give it a miss this time around. I've got quite a lot of things on next month in particular, so unfortunately I won't be able to commit time to play. I hope you manage to get a few more folk to sign up.
Good luck with your games everyone.

Thanks for the PM!
Can I still join?

Hi again all,
Maybe I'll join too, until when do i have to sign up?
I saw 2 dates..
-
Now I see that this was a good decision - to send those PMs. Welcome!
Maybe I'll join too, until when do i have to sign up?
I saw 2 dates..
Yes, you have to sign up here till the end of this week (26.11).
-
I'm in too - thanks for the pm
-
Thank you for the message. Unfortunately, I have such a busy schedule nowadays that I won't be able to join and play on a regular basis as is rightly required. Heck, I'm not as active on this forum as I want to unfortunately.
Good luck everyone in general but I'll be supporting the Belgians ;)
-
I've waited for an opportunity like this. I join! :blue-meeple: :red-meeple: :white-meeple:
btw, I'm Chilean :D
-
I'll join if you need to make the (Mr)Numbers up to 24. If you have 24 others I'll happily sit this one out.
-
I hesitated, I'm quite busy, and I had more than my share of Carcassonne in 2017 but I couldn't miss Cup two years in a row, I'd like to join... Sorry that I waited so long. Representing :white-meeple: :red-meeple:!!!!
-
OK, I think that's it! We have a good number of participants now (24), so Halfling, you are participating, unless some late-comer desperately will want to join :)
Expect the Grand Opening very soon! ;)

Hi all,
I don't play in this CarcC World Cup, but if a player will quitt during the tournament, then I will play the remaining games.
Have fun in the CarcC World Cup.
Greetings

Have fun guys! I considered participating but there are too many things going on in the few weeks left before the Christmas break, so ultimately I decided against it. Cheers! :gray-meeple:

So are we good to go with 24?
-
So are we good to go with 24?
Yes, we are good with 24 participants.
So, here are the rules for this year's World Cup. I allowed to myself to take Dan's previous year's rules and modify them a little bit ;)
Group stage
Every participant has been assigned to one of 4 groups (labeled A – D) and each group has 6 participants. Everybody in each group should play a single, head-to-head game against everyone else in their group individually. This means that everyone taking part in the World Cup will get to play 5 games at this stage of the competition.
Games
Games should be played online via JCloisterZone version 4.1.0 which can be downloaded here: http://jcloisterzone.com/builds/JCloisterZone-4.1.0.7z. You must be running the same version of JCZ as your opponent in order for the game to work (so let's all stick with 4.1.0) and please remember to unzip this before you attempt to run it as you will encounter difficulties connecting to a game otherwise! Alternatively, you can play a game in person. If this is the case, please be sure to post photos of the finished landscape!
In order that they can take place, online games require a host which may be one of the players, or even a third person who isn't taking part in the match. If neither you nor your opponent has the ability to host games directly, please ask if someone else in your group is able to host for you at the time of your scheduled match. Failing this, someone in the chat room or Slack channel (see below) may be able to host for you or there is an online server which can be used by selecting JCloisterZone's "Play Online" option.
In the event of either player losing connection while the game is in progress, the game should be saved so that it can be reloaded. There will normally be someone in the chat room or Slack channel who will guide you through how this can be achieved, but it is a relatively simple process...
Expansions
All games at the group stage should include the following expansions:
Inns & Cathedrals
Besiegers
The Festival
The Phantom
(these can be selected on the pre-game screen where you choose a colour and enter your name).
Please ensure that the "Randomize playing order" checkbox is enabled/ ticked so that the starting player will be chosen at random.
Artificial Aids
JCloisterZone includes a number of artificial aids such as farm hints, projected scores and even tile-counting assistance. We all are busy people, and time is valuable for all of us. Many players spend decent amount of time anyway to count points for farms and uncompleted features, so with the purpose of speeding up our games, I allow to use "projected scores" feature. Other aids are still prohibited. I can't stop you from using them anyway, and won't know if you do, but I do urge you to play as fair as possible. I know it's a competition and we all want to win, but let's keep it fair, fun and friendly as far as possible...
How groups will be ranked
Players will be awarded 2 group points for a win or 1 group point for a draw so that an overall group-ranking can be established. "Points Differential" (total points scored by you minus total points scored against you in all games) will be used as a tie-breaker and the top 2 players from each group will go through to the knock-out stage.
Communication
Please use Private Messages (PMs) as an opportunity to schedule suitable times for your matches. Don't just sign in to the chat room or Slack channel and hope that someone will be there and available to play! There will also be a dedicated thread for each group which is intended for you to record scores, post screenshots (including score breakdown) and game reports so that your groups progress can be tracked.
Chat room and Slack channel
Since Paul created the irc chat room and Decar created the Slack channel for Carcassonne Central, we have two places, where our members can meet for the games. So, our chat page can be accessed through your browser by following this link: http://sydby.com/carcassonne/irc/index.html. Accordingly, Slack channel's address is https://carcassonnecentral.slack.com. You will usually be able to find a third-party host there as necessary, and can also seek technical support relating to JCloisterZone or crashed games in the unlikely event that you need it. Use what is most suitable for you.
Prizes
I have some prize(s) for the winner(s), but let it remain in secret for some time :)
What happens next?
More information regarding the rest of the tournament (specifically the knock-out stage) will be disclosed as the group stage begins to wind down.
Participants distribution into groups will be published shortly.
Any questions are welcomed! :D
-
Woohoo! Let's kick it...
Those are some nicely written rules MrNumbers. Good work!
Good luck everyone :)

There is a bug with one Festival tile (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=3654.0): JCZ doesn't count the city part of cffr tile gives points to a farm. Be aware of this bug, and manually add 3 points to farms in question during final scoring, if needed.
-
Any chance the bug can be fixed?
-
Any chance the bug can be fixed?
Realistically, Farin is the only person who would be able to do this. In the meantime, I don't think it's so much hassle to check farms at the end of each game.
-
Hello folks.
I just did my own test. I just wanted to clarify. The city part of the festival CFFR tile doesn't contribute to a farm only if it is the only part of that city in contact with the farm being scored. If another part of the same city is reachable by that farm, then it appears that the city is counted for scoring.
Therefore the algorithm for adjusting the score at the end of each match, is to locate the festival CFFR tile. If it is part of a completed city and the farm that it should contribute to does not reach that city in any other way, only then add 3 points to each player that is on that farm.

Games
Games should be played online via JCloisterZone version 3.4.3 which can be downloaded here: http://jcloisterzone.com/builds/JCloisterZone-3.4.3.zip. You must be running the same version of JCZ as your opponent in order for the game to work (so let's all stick with 3.4.3) and please remember to unzip this before you attempt to run it as you will encounter difficulties connecting to a game otherwise!
Farin has fixed the bug of the Festival tile in JCloisterZone 4.0.0, so I think we should use this version instead of 3.4.3. from now on.

Thanks for the info. I have updated to 4.0.0.
-
I did a game today with Hounk with the new 4.0.0 version. All seemed to be scoring as usual :)
-
I'll be in the chatroom tonight at 19:00 CET if anyone wants a practice WC17 game. Maybe after that I can play a real game.
:red-meeple:
-
I'll summarize outstanding games:
Group A:
Adronalin vs. TheSteveAllen
BabyGamer vs. Chooselife
BabyGamer vs. TheSteveAllen
Leven vs. MrNumbers
Group B:
Halfling vs. Merlin_89
Halfling vs. What If?
Merlin_89 vs. What If?
Xanderx12 vs. What If?
Group D:
rfielder vs. zone2
Deadline to play all these games is set to 28.01.2017. After the deadline all games will be forfeited either in one player's favor or as a 0:0 draw with no group points.
From now on, please, include me in any PM between players, so I could track down and understand, which player's fault it was that the game wasn't played.
-
Adrornalin and I are playing our match this evening.
