Title: Princess & Dragon League: Fairies
Post by: danisthirty on January 20, 2016, 08:07:07 AM
Fairies:

Please read the following tournament notes/ guidance/ rules before continuing:

1. Players have already been divided into three different groups ("Dragons", "Princesses" and "Fairies"). Each player will play one game of Carcassonne against every other player in their group individually via a series of 2-player/ head-to-head games. The winner of each game will be awarded two league points whereas the loser gets nothing. If the game is tied, both players receive one league point each.

2. Players in each group will be ranked according to the number of league points they have scored. PD (Points Differential) will be used as an initial tie-breaker if there is no clear winner based on league points alone, and total combined score (from all games) will be used as a second tie-breaker if necessary. Your PD is calculated by taking the total number of points scored by you and subtracting the total number of points scored against you (combined across all games).

3. Games will be played online through the latest stable version of JCloisterZone (currently 3.4.2). Please ensure you have downloaded this and are familiar with its controls and features before the competition begins. It is also recommended that you have played at least one practice game against a live opponent (as opposed to a dead one) in order to identify and resolve any technical problems before your first game.

4. JCloisterZone includes a number of artificial aids such as farm hints, projected scores and even tile-counting assistance. I can't stop you from using any of these, and won't know if you do, but I do urge you to play under "exam conditions" as far as possible so that you're relying purely on your own wits, knowledge and experience rather than using anything else to help you. I know it's a competition and we all want to win, but let's keep it fair, fun and friendly as far as possible...

5. Each game will include the basic tiles plus the Princess & Dragon expansion only (no other expansions please). This is 102 tiles including the start tile, so 101 tiles will be shuffled and randomly drawn for you and your opponent in turn. The starting player should be chosen at random through JCZ by selecting the “Randomize seating order” checkbox on the pre-game screen.

6. If any unexpected behaviour occurs during your game (for example if you think you have discovered a bug within JCloisterZone which may have altered the course of the game for you), please consult with your opponent and the CAR/ anyone else who happens to be in the chat room at the time to determine whether it appears to be a genuine bug. If it is, please save your game and post details of the bug along with anything else relating to how it came about on the forums. If however, you and your opponent are both happy to continue with your game despite the bug then feel free to do so, but don’t forget to mention the bug afterwards no matter how minor it may have seemed!

7. Please post a screenshot of your game, including final scores and score breakdown, back to your group thread as soon as your game is complete. It's always interesting to hear what happened during the game too, so please feel free to post any thoughts/ comments at the same time if you wish. If you're not sure how to capture/ post screenshots, please ask on the forums and either myself or someone else will explain how to do this (we're a friendly bunch!)

8. It is the players responsibility to liaise with their fellow group-members in order to find a mutually convenient time to play their game. This is expected to be done predominantly through Private Messages but feel free to use your group thread (here) too if this is easier. Please do keep any appointments you make, or at least give your opponent as much notice as possible if something occurs which prevents you from playing at the agreed time.

9. Each of the 3 initial groups contains 9 players so the first stage of the competition will end when every player (all 27 of us) has played 8 games. At this point, the pool will split into 9 groups of 3 depending on finishing position in the initial groups. So, the top-ranked Dragon, Princess and Fairy will form group D1, and those who came second in each group will form group D2. The same will be true for groups D3 to D9.

10. Play in groups D1 to D9 will constitute the second stage of the competition which will run in the same way as the first except with more groups and fewer people per group. League points, PD and total score will be reset at this point (but remembered for overall stats) so that no single player in any group has any kind of advantage. Finishing positions in groups at the second stage will determine overall rank: 1st=D1-1, 2nd=D1-2, 3rd=D1-3, 4th=D2-1, 5th=D2-2, ..., 23rd=D8-2, 24th=D8-3, 25th=D9-1, 26th=D9-2, 27th=D9-3.

Finally, you may find the following links helpful: Carcassonne Central IRC Chat (http://sydby.com/carcassonne/irc/index.html), JCloisterZone (http://jcloisterzone.com/en/), and this (http://www.mainelypet.com/bonding_bearded_dragon).

The competition is now on! Good luck everyone... :) :(y)

Hi folks! I'm traveling at the moment for my work but already this weekend I'll be available! So anytime Saturday or Sunday is good for me. I believe weekends are best to play "intercontinental games" due to important time differences, so Andrew,  Robert, monwil and JT, perhaps we can arrange our games already for this weekend or the one after.

JT, you play on iPad too?

Cheers,
Jéré

I will be available to play Sunday morning NZDT (UTC+13).

Lets say from 9am (8pm Sat UTC) (1pm Sat MST).

Does that suit anyone?

Dan - would it be possible for you to list the members of each group, along with their countries and time zones?

That would make it a lot easier when trying to set up game times.

Thanks!

monwil and I are in Canada, EST.

I've added countries but I did it from memory so I can't be 100% sure. Please correct me if I'm wrong guys!

Just want to let you know where I am - I'm not available tonight.  I suspect I'll be around tomorrow evening, will confirm tomorrow morning.  Work has told me I may need to travel for the next 3 weeks, but if that doesn't happen I should be around Tuesday night from around 7pm GMT.

First game in our group!

Jéré 144  -  Andrew the Ambo 115

I had a lucky last tile to close a mid-size city (bottom right with the fairy in it, worth 20+3 pts) so the score does not really show how close this game was! In fact, Andrew was in the lead for most of the game and towards the end I had no meeples left in my supply... I think I did a good job at trapping his meeples and while he was busy trying to untrap them (rescued 2 out of 4), I took control of the main farm, which made the difference. Well played Andrew!

Do you know how many points were "lost" ?  If you both agree, I suggest to manually add the points to the final score.

While watching, I saw monwil lose 3 points, and Andrew lose three points.  There may have been others, but nobody was keeping track, and those two canceled out.

The important thing is that this has happened often enough to see a pattern.  That may be enough for Farin to figure it out.

It might resemble a little tsunami but it is definitely not a walk in the park. Last 2 games were particularly difficult!

Usually, before a tournament I'm like whatever and don't practice at all. This time I had an impromptu practice game with master Khalid and he taught me how to play. :)

Jéré  156   -   Curt  114

Curt played very well and game was pretty even until the last quarter where I took control of the fields while Curt had unlucky draws. We were fighting for a big incomplete city: we both got a princess tile but I got mine first and his no longer fitted after I placed mine... That was lucky!

Jéré  172   -   Decar  147

Bizarre game.... Fun though! Crazy fight for a huge city... It became unoccupied then claimed back several times. Finally, I got a tile to close and score it... The thing is that it was a princess tile that Decar could have used to remove my knight so I got definitely lucky there. I'd say that Decar clearly dominated the second half of the game but while he was scoring features I positioned my farmers and that was it...  Decar played amazingly, better than me. That enormous city allowed me to steal the win.

It was quite a game, most of the Dragon and portal tiles came out early as did the princess tiles.  This made is next to impossible for me to count anything.  I'm not sure I played better, but I completed quite a few features while Jéré was busy. After losing that ~45 point city (because, as it turned out, I misplaced a volcano), I didn't think there was much hope, it was closer than I thought it was going to be. I didn't really appreciate how much the farms were worth and they all start to add up.  There were some very good chances to make one big farm, but I left it late to create opportunities.  If I'd played in the bottom left a turn sooner, it may have been different, there were plenty of chances to join the farms together.  And even if I did I'm sure Jéré would have been able to block at just the right moment.

Good luck in your last game Jéré

Sorry I've not been playing so far everyone, I have had a busy week and haven't been on the forum much! The busyness included a game of Mega Carcassonne on Sunday which I hope to post about later tonight :)

Jéré and I just played our game and I managed to eke out a close victory thanks to some lucky tiles. There were two cities (the complete one with the start tile and the big incomplete one in the bottom left) that we fought for with dragons and princesses and I fortunately got the tiles to win them both.

We played on the iPad version, here is the final board:

Well done JT !!  Indeed, I ran out of luck... but you also played like a pro!  :(y)

We had big fights for cities, using many princess tiles back and forth... The dragon too but I didn't have the last word, so JT scored an enormous amount of points just with cities. Winning the main field was not enough. Congrats!

Played all my games now (if you're wondering why so fast, well, I'm usually fast... But it's mostly because I'll be unavailable for almost the entire month of February). Because I lost my last game, I think the door is wide open for someone from the group to win all his/her remaining games and steal the first place!! My PD is not so impressive (as usual!) so it definitely possible...

I played 3 games this evening.

Actually the first was a short one as our game with rfielder was broken last Sunday due to internet connection problems, and now we had to play only the final 8 tiles.
As you know, there are problems with fairy scoring in reloaded games, so I wrote up the extra 3 points for myself: if I'm not mistaken there were 3 occasions where I did not receive the usual 3 extra points for the fairy. I'm not sure but I think rfielder had no such situation.
The original score calculated by JCloisterZone was:

:violet-meeple: Leven 179 -  :green-meeple: rfielder 141

Please make appointmentw with your opponents.

In this group - there have been played less than a half of the 36 games - only 17 games till now.

JT Atomico and Curt194 have played only one game each.

Title: Re: Princess & Dragon League: Fairies
Post by: Leven on February 13, 2016, 01:38:16 PM
A very tense game with JT Atomico.
It all started well for me. By finishing some minor cities plus placing a lucky cloister tile I had a slight lead halfway through the game while I was able to trap two green meeples as well (although one of them could join a 11 pt incompletable city with the CCCC tile). But then I suddenly started losing the ground under my feet: at first JT Atomico picked my knight off a promising little city using the princess, and with his next tile he completed a big (22 pt) city and won it by 2:1. He also drew the CCCC tile. At this point he took the lead and kept it for a long time. My hope was in the main farm (with 8 cities in the end) where I could join 3 farmers (though two of them and also a thief of mine were threatened by the dragon) while my opponent only had one. But two more could have been joined with the only remaining RRFF tile but I had the luck to get it. Considering that I also drew the last volcano tile (which pretty much rescued my farmers) I have to admit that was a quite lucky win for me.

The final score:
:violet-meeple: Leven 145 :  :green-meeple: JT Atomico 126

That means I need a victory with a point difference of +26 in my last game with Curt194 to (have a chance to) win the group.

Post by: Leven on February 14, 2016, 05:02:48 AM
If my calculation is correct then this 23 point victory over Curt194 is just not enough to overtake Jéré. His point difference is better than mine by mere two points.
But I cannot complain as Jéré had a well deserved victory over me while he suffered his only defeat in a very close game.

:violet-meeple: Leven 143 : :blue-meeple: Curt194 120

Not enough just two points, Leven!  :-\ Yeah, every point counts.
Kettlefish, there is a possibility for JT Atomico to overtake both Leven and Jere! So C groups winners are not decided yet C:-)

EDIT: OK, while I was posting this, the picture has changed, C1 and C2 labels are gone :)

Yes - Leven told me that JT Atomico has still the chance to win the fairy-group.
I have changed my x-score list.

We can meet in the chat room.

Saturday night's results are in:

Decar vs rfielder - 145:120 to Decar
Decar vs monwil - 145: 128 to Decar

A rare sighter: me playing two games in one evening!  An even rarer sight: me winning a game! An even rarer rarity: me scoring the same points in 2 consecutive games?!

I have to be honest, I wasn't very happy with my play.  Having lost to Robert in the last 2 tournaments due to over play & blind greed; I decided to play the slow game; today I was lucky.

I got a few early traps, and Robert trapped my meeple in a dango city.  Later I allowed the Dragon to eat my meeple here.  Later though, by playing two cloisters so near each other, I was left with little choice - 3 trapped!

Regardless of being meepleless for most of the game Robert had scored a great deal of points early on in the game.  I had a lot of work to do!

I was able to complete the city in the north (for +3 with the fairey).  Robert put that meeple to good use and took the farmer.

With the extra meeple in hand, I was able to secure the farm.  But, with the last 2 tiles, I stupidly played the CFRr tile in the bottom right of the map.  If Robert got the last Dragon tile, I would have lost the farm, the Dragon was in the square next to this on the left.  however, I got lucky and was able to play the last tile and score a city:

A great result for me, but not necessarily well deserved. It's tough to keep up in the game when so many meeple are trapped.  You'll see Robert scored a lot of fairy points and kept my Dragon plans very difficult.  I knew if Robert got another meeple, it would be tough to keep the lead.

-------------------------------
As soon as the game was over I had the chance to play Monwil.  This game was even closer!  I got off to a very slow start and lost that 7point city, twice to princesses.  I decided to trap in response, I was lucky to get the tiles I required.  Most of the game I was struggling to find good places to play meeple.  I didn't even notice Monwil use a princess to remove me from the large city on the right hand side; another princess.  This city had quite a few points which held a great deal of points near the end of the game.  Being a few meeple up, I was able to fight for the main farm and score the smaller farms on the peripheries.  I had to play carefully to not leave city caps lying around.

Thank you both for taking the time out of your day to play.  Hopefully we'll get to play again soon - maybe with less Dragons next time ;)

Hello Fairies!

It looks like there are 15 games left to play which may take a while based on progress so far. If anybody is struggling with anything or is away/ unavailable please let me know so that I can try to help out, otherwise, I'm keen to see a few more games taking place in this group so would encourage anyone who still has games outstanding to please contact their outstanding opponents in order to arrange a date/ time for their matches. :)

Cheers! :(y)

Time to update that sheet!

I've just played Andrew The Ambo.

Decar (168) : Andrew The Ambo (123)

A pretty unfair game for Andrew I thought.  He started strong and stole a valuable city from me at the start.  I seemed to lack focus, but refrained from putting my meeple to work, until a little later in the game.  This seems to have paid off,  Andrew seemed to run out of threats, while his meeple were busy and I was able to claim the large farm (and the second largest) well before Andrew claimed the two in the north.  There was a valiant attempt to threaten the main field, but the tiles didn't come up.  I was able to get the point scoring machine whirring and pick off small points to create a safe lead.

A fun game - Thanks for taking the time to play Andrew!

JT Atomico 124 :green-meeple: - Decar 104 :black1-meeple:

A close one between me and Decar! It came down to the dragon eating one of Decar's farmers in the big field right at the end of the game.

We had a bug in JCZ that meant that fairy bonus points for completion were not being scored, so I have added those manually to the score sheet.

It was a really close game - Thanks for playing!

JTAtomico's game disconnected near the start, so I saved the game, then his next move he used the princess instead of the fairy when completing the city.  As it was the first move, I reloaded the game.  So I get to claim the moral victory even if the 9 points made no difference to the end result.  ;D ;D

I was gutted to lose my farmer to the dragon so near the end, ultimately it was my fault.  I had a choice to play it on the portal (directly above) or on the cloister when the dragon previously moved.  A silly decision given one dragon tile was left, which cost me the game.  Take heed and don't rush!

The dragon saw was great action in this game.  I think it only moved 2-3 times without eating anyone!

Look forward to playing you again JT Atomico, best of luck in your final games!

JT Atomico 183 :green-meeple: - monwil 108 :red-meeple:

Thanks to monwil and rfielder for being patient with me through more internet issues! My connection has been terrible today.

Having to reconnect meant that the fairy points went wrong again, so I have again adjusted the final scores based on manual recording of missed fairy bonuses.

This was a high scoring contest, monwil got unlucky with a couple of dragon feasts on her farmers and nearly closed a big city at the top of the board but for one tile which I was fortunate enough to draw.

JT Atomico 162 :green-meeple: - zone2 119 :blue-meeple:

zone2 managed to grab a big incomplete city, but I was able to take the main field which cancelled that out. The dragon was my friend again, eating a couple of zone2's farmers!

The end of the game took me by surprise, I hadn't kept an eye on the tile count! I could have scored 4 points with my last tile but didn't deploy - I hope that doesn't come back to haunt me in the points difference!

What a game!

I took an early lead, but Curt did a fantastic job of glomming onto anything and everything he could.  I snuck a lead with a small city to the north, but Curt quickly started to do the same thing.  I decided to trap one of my meeple for 2 of Curts (which I later recovered with the Dragon).  I think this was the decisive move as it allowed me to throw a few farmers in fields.

The tiles at the end were poorly played by me, and I couldn't see a good way to get the last farmer I needed in the field, but if I had counted better, there were plenty of chances.  Curt took the lead with another cloister and 8 point cities, but the last tile was the Cloister with a Road, allowing me to join my last farmer to the biggest field, I had originally planned to attack on the right.

Thanks a lot for the game Curt, best of luck in your remaining games!

Decar: 193  Curt194: 177

Although it looks like the league points and PD is correct, the font colour in the table suggests that zone2 beat JT Atomico despite losing to him by 43 points! I know it's only a superficial thing, but please could you correct this when you next update the scoresheet?

Just finished my game with AndrewTheAmbo - my first win of the tournament, mostly because of the big city in the middle of the board which I ended up getting the majority in after some fighting.

Andrew fought well for the farm but it didn't ultimately make up enough points. I had some very lucky tile draws which helped me out a lot too!

Final Scores:

Curt194: 168
AndrewtheAmbo: 142

The tiles did not like me at all this game.
Near the start, I kept drawing Road tiles while Curt got the cities.

Mid game, I thought I had successfully blocked the big city, trapping 2 of his meeples, and with a CCCF to comlete (which I thought were all gone. I even had a meeple in the city of my own, so when I had a chance to use the dragon to remove it, I was all smiles. Next tile though....the last CCCF. Damn!

I also lost the city down the bottom with Curt getting a princess tile to clos it and removing my meeple at the same time.

At least I got to keep the main farm to myself. So close, and yet so far.

Please email or PM any outstanding opponent's directly (and include me) to arrange final games. Messages on here are too easily ignored.

How are these last games looking, is anyone having problems making contact with anyone else?

JT Atomico 184 :green-meeple: - Andrew the Ambo 107 :red-meeple:

A nice, high paced game between Andrew and me. The main field covered pretty much the whole board by the end, so that was the biggest fight. Andrew had a share of it right up until the very last tile which was a dragon drawn by me! One of his farmers was right beside the beast so I was able to chomp my way to a much bigger winning margin than it would have been if luck had gone the other way.

JT Atomico 184 :green-meeple: - Andrew the Ambo 107 :red-meeple:

Congrats, JT Atomico!  :(y)

This result means that if you win your last game vs Curt194 (regardless of the point difference) you will win this crazy group (where one can finish 3rd with only one defeat  :o ).

Well done JT.  I lost against you so a 1st place in our group would be well deserved, no doubt about that.

Thanks Jéré, but the good news for you is that I just lost to Curt! He will be updating here shortly.

That is all of my games played now - thanks everyone :green-meeple:

Curt194 184  :blue-meeple: -  JT Atomic 157  :green-meeple:

So my third win of the league so far. Excellent game with JT Atomico, quite a few smaller fields in this one which lead to a lot of farmer placement towards the end of the game.

The dragon didn't come out for pretty much the first half of the game which lead to a lot of dragon movement towards the end, and he was on my side allowing me to remove quite a few of JT's meeples late on. We shared the mega city at the bottom of the board in the end after quite a bit of fighting for it.

It seems when Dan's away the mice do play Carcassonne!

Apparently so. I should stay away more often!

Well done to everyone for getting these final games in. 2 games left in the other group, one of which is scheduled (I think), and then we can move on to the final round. I may need to remind myself of the rules to P & D before we move on though; it's been so long since my last game that I've pretty much forgotten... ::)

Curt194 and zone2 - please include me on any communications between yourselves to do with arranging your match. Hopefully the 2-hour time difference shouldn't be too much to overcome.

Curt194, zone2 have you had any luck arranging a time for your last game?

Final game has been played!

Curt 194 :blue-meeple: 194 - Zone 2 :violet-meeple: 176

Good game with Zone 2 with lots of fighting for the main farm! The dragon got quite a bit of food too. Ultimately me getting the large city on the right of the field swung it. Very close game! Thank you zone 2  :)

Another big screenshot (sorry!)

This time I really had to look at the final x-score sheet to believe that I finished first!

This is how I would have described the situation towards the end... (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Photo_finish#/media/File%3ATriple_dead-heat.jpg)

Good job everyone!
