New to carcassonne - borrow or buy? anyone in SE london?
« on: March 22, 2017, 08:07:53 AM »
Hi there,
I'm a time to time board gamer (campaign, risk etc)

Whilst idly googling on the subject a few days ago I discovered Carcassonne.

A few youtube videos later I was hooked.   Wow, I really would like to give this game a try.

Is there anyone in south east london that has a set that I could look at and / or even borrow?  Or perhaps even an unwanted set that they could bear to part with?

Ok, this is a long shot - but life has taught me that the strangest nice things can happen if one hopes for them enough.

have a lovely day

Fogarrach,

You do not need to borrow or buy anything. You can play Carcassonne on line using JCloisterZone. It is free and runs in Linux, Mac and even Windows!
http://jcloisterzone.com/en/

Just make certain that you have Java installed.

Good luck my friend!

Dear Steve,

Many thanks for kindly taking the time to reply.  I'm going to give the online version a try.

That said, I still hope to obtain a copy of the board game at some stage.  I am, after all, a board gamey kind of person.

For some reason Carcassonne has really caught my imagination, such a simple idea and yet it is as complex a game as you'd ever want to play

Thanks again for taking the time to read and reply to my post.

And welcome from my part too, Fogarrach!

Always nice to see people get hooked by this beautiful game.  You even might get lucky to play against one of us if you're playing this evening because thursday is the most popular on this forum to play our weekly online game.  Most of us can be found in the chat room to meet up. http://sydby.com/carcassonne/irc/index.html

I will be willing to introduce you in the game this evening starting from 20.00 CET.  Just look for "Thodekey".

Anyway, have fun!

And good luck to you for tonight.

You could print some fan made expansions in the download section, just on the paper, it will give you a little idea of the game in your hand, complete rules are available there.  :black1-meeple:

I agree with Draonglord that printing things on paper will give you a rough idea of the game, but I might go with the base game. The fan made expansions introduce extra elements and rules, anyway.

Thank you Dragonlord and ny1050220 for taking the time and kindness to reply.

All your suggestions have not only helped my understanding of the possibilities but also gone a long way to convince me that this is a nice community to be part of.

Therefore, partly as a result of you folks, I've only gone and done it.  Big Box awaited in post.

Pretty much the same here.
One day, a friend saw Carcassonne in the game store and bought it. Then we tried it out. The next thing is that I bought a Big Box.

Hi Fogarrach and welcome to the forums! It's always a pleasure to meet another Carcassonne fan, especially one who is so close to home...

I live in Reading which isn't so far away from SE London (depending of course on just how SE you are) but if you were looking for someone to try a few casual games against I'm sure we could arrange something. I know at least two other forum members from London too, so they might be up for it as well!

Anyway, good choice to get the Big Box. With all the expansions it includes you can quickly discover which you like most and include/ exclude whichever to customise the game to suit you and fellow players. Playing online is fun too (either through JCloisterZone or iOS/ Android apps, or whatever else) but nothing beats playing in person with real tiles and meeples!

Best of luck with it. Looking forward to hearing more about how you get on with it! :) :(y)

Hello!

I see that you already bought the big box, careful, next thing you know you will be driving to Scotland due to a rumour that there are two copies of the Cathar expansion at a second hand book store somewhere. After discovering that they sold them two weeks ago you sit in the car cursing your stupidity whilst creating an account for german e-bay and then there is no turning back.

Maybe I shouldn´t buy kathars, what would I do next?

Welcome.  This is a great community indeed.  I hope you enjoy the new drugs game and either have lots of money, or are not very fond of the money you have.   ;)

That made me chuckle.   ;D

Welcome to the forum!

One more suggestion for you: You may want to visit the boardgame Café called Draughts located in Hackney.  You pay a small fee and get access to their library of games.  Carcassonne is there plus lots of other things you might like to explore.  We visited last year:

Good luck on your hunt!

Hi Danisthirty,

Thank you for your kind words.  You know what, the idea of an intro game does appeal.  Not least because there is something of a social element about Carcasonne.  (I shall write later about how I stumbled across the game - or should  say, how Carcassonne found me)

Good morning to you What if? and CKorfman, your posts made me quietly chuckle.

To be more exact, What if?, your post made me smile, and then made me a tad homesick - as I wouldn't view any journey to Scotland as a chore.

And, CKorfman if your analogy is true, it simply reflects the passion that this game seems to generate.  Reminds me of my pre-internet days searches for Beach Boys Smile LP erm... how can i say, fan produced material.

Decar, thank you for welcome and for the tip re the board game cafe.  It looks like a great place to try new games, definitely worth a visit.

Dear theSteveAllen & Dragonlord,

Update

Ta for the tips,

While I wait for the post I've decided to make my own set on a thin card (a used takeway box if you must ask).  16 pieces complete, I'm currently wondering about the best way to cut them.
