Title: United Kingdom Carcassonne Central Meetup Event 2015
Post by: Decar on June 24, 2015, 09:11:26 AM
Riding on the success of the UK Championships, some of us thought it would be a nice idea to organize a Carcassonne Central Meetup Event (CCME for short)

It's all pretty simple:

1) See who wants to come.
2) Organize/Pick a date (probably a Saturday) most of us can make.
3) Find a venue which is reasonable for us all to get to.
4) Turn up and play Carcassonne all day.
5) Cake?
6) Beer?

The Date is Confirmed:   31st October - Shadow Games - http://www.shadow-games.co.uk

Rugby  10am - 5pm

Confirmed Attendees:  Me, Dan, Curt, Rich The Fish, Piklach, JT Atomico

Basically Wooden will be attending the meetup - http://www.basicallywooden.co.uk
They're bringing prototypes and if you're thinking about placing an order you might be able to pick it up there and save on postage :)

Check the Poster Out below!

The cheapest place to park for the day is opposite the council house on Evreux Way, Rugby CV21 2DT. It is about £3.50 a day and is open for 24 hours. Failing that then I would use the John Barford car park, CV21 2SL which is £5 for up to 11 hours. Both of these are less than a five minute walk to the shop.

ORIGINAL POST - please ignore
I've picked 3-semi random dates later this year, at different times during the month; so maybe people can let us know if they would like to come & if they can make any of these dates:

Possible Alternative Date:

August (28-29) - Jungleboy

I'm open to suggestions too; but trying to keep it simple for now.

Decar - Cardiff
Danisthirty - Reading
JT Atomico - London
Curt - London/Cambridge
Koremu - West Yorkshire
Rosco - Cumbria

- Current Mid Point (http://www.geomidpoint.com/?ml=52.51262&mn=-1.43961&l=51.481581|51.454265|51.507351|52.205337|53.810818|54.577232&n=-3.17909|-0.97813|-0.127758|0.121817|-1.76261|-2.797483&a=Cardiff,+Cardiff,+UK|Reading,+Reading,+Reading,+UK|London,+UK|Cambridge,+Cambridge,+UK|West+Yorkshire,+UK|Cumbria,+UK&cl=52.67775&cn=-1.5252&z=7&x=0&c=0&p=1&r=0&w=0)

This sounds like a great idea.

I’d love to be included as long as I’m free on the chosen date. I don’t think any of them are booked up yet so I’m easy about all 3.

Looking forward to it already!  :) :(y)

Defnitely keen for this :) I was really disappointed to miss the UK Championships.

At the moment I am free on any of those dates. I am based in London but happy to travel.

I will check dates - I am in Cumbria by the way.

I'm in West Yorkshire. I could make any of the dates, as long as I get enough advance notice to buy train tickets.

I'd prefer somewhere on a mainline route, and if possible not requiring some ridiculous multi-train journey that'd cost the earth.

Also: Beer!

Guys, I might be in the UK in late August (28-29) for a couple of days. If the meetup was anywhere near Cambridge or London then I might be able to swing it.

Well that all sounds pretty awesome  :)

I'm good for any of those dates at the moment and love between London and Cambridge. Happy to travel if there are places that are easier for people to get to!

This sounds great but with my first child due around those dates I'm afraid I'm out. Maybe next time though  :)

A great response so far!

I've updated the bit at the top - hopefully it's all correct.

Guy perhaps the August date is better...and maybe if we're close to the hospital?

I'm good for any of those dates at the moment and love between London and Cambridge.

Let's hope you're lovers don't find out about each other  ;D

I should also add that I don't want to hijack the meetup. If my dates don't suit enough people, feel free to do it on a different date without me.

Post by: Decar on June 26, 2015, 02:23:18 AM
I think we're all pretty flexible!

Maybe we can plan a impromptu trip to see you in London in August and pick one of the later dates for a meetup.

I've started looking at board game shops, hopefully they might host us for the day.

I think there's still a few Brits hiding on the forums that might want to come along though :)
Title: Re: United Kingdom Carcassonne Central Meetup Event 2015
Post by: Decar on June 30, 2015, 04:03:25 AM
I should just make it clear that everyone/anyone from the forum is invited to attend.  If you fancy a Carcassonne holiday in the UK, let us know :)

I've made a list of game shops in the Birmingham area - this seems like a reasonable mid-way point; so our Northern contingent has best opportunity to attend as well.

If everyone's happy with a general region - I'll make a list of shops I've found in the area.

My solo trip to Cambridge in late August is fast turning into a weekend away with my wife, so I think I'm out.

Post by: Decar on July 10, 2015, 06:54:23 AM
It's a shame you can't make it, but I hope your wife enjoys the trip!

I've found two potential venues to hold our event.  I've whittled the list down, so if anyone else knows of a better place let me know.

I've not contacted either place about hosting; but would like to get some feedback:

This place already holds a Carcassonne Tournament and is located in Rugby:

The room seems cheap to hire:
http://www.shadow-games.co.uk/welcome/

This place is right in the centre of Birmingham (which may be bad for car drivers, but good for those on the train):

Rather than being in a room, we might be in the middle of the shop; which could be nice for members of the public coming into the shop (and joining in  :(y)):

http://www.waylandsforge.co.uk/

They also have a shelf of games with a few Carcassonne boxes on it  :(y)

-----
Maybe we can have a quick vote and I can contact either venue and see what they could do for us.

Thanks guys!

If you decide to hold your meet-up in Birmingham and would like other gamers to join you, then let me know and I'll advertise it among the local gaming clubs. I haven't been to Wayland Forge's new shop, but I know the location - it is not quite in the centre of the city, being a 10 minute walk from the main railway station (Birmingham New Street) in a former custard factory. It should be okay for car drivers as traffic is not too bad on Saturdays and parking should be available in nearby side streets.

Come on people, Decar is doing us a big favour here by offering to organise a UK meetup! Let’s at least try to make his life easier by offering some feedback on the venue or other support...

I’ve had a quick look around their website and from what I’ve seen I think it looks awesome (although I may just be saying that because it used to be a custard factory and I’ve never played Carcassonne in a custard factory before [or indeed done very much at all in a custard factory]). So it’s a big :(y) from me!  :)

Post by: Curt194 on July 15, 2015, 06:18:47 AM
Birmingham works for me ^_^ he custard factory is a great venue although I haven't been to the game place there before. It's definitely not too much of a walk from new street so I think it would work well  :(y)

I contacted What land's Forge last week, but have not heard back from them yet.

So I decided to contact Shadow Games today (in Rugby) and they got back to me within an hour and said they can pencil us in on our October date and they'd happily host us for free.  An awesome response  :(y)

I'll with the forge a few more days; but how do people feel about travelling to Rugby?
Title: Re: United Kingdom Carcassonne Central Meetup Event 2015
Post by: danisthirty on July 23, 2015, 05:25:49 AM
Sorry for the delay in getting back to you Decar.

Travelling up to Rugby is fine with me, but I'm not sure if the October date is going to work out for me anymore (sorry :-[). September and November are still OK, but we're now going to be having my son's birthday party on the 17th October and this isn't the sort of thing I can miss (or would want to if I'm honest, regardless of the alternative occasion).

If October still works out for everyone else then by all means go ahead with it! :(y)
Title: Re: United Kingdom Carcassonne Central Meetup Event 2015
Post by: Curt194 on July 24, 2015, 06:12:31 AM
Rugby isn't too far from Birmingham so should be easy enough to get to!

As for dates I'm still pretty flexible with them at the moment so if there are specific dates that work best for the majority then I can work with that.

Thanks for the feedback guys - It wouldn't be a meetup event without Dan, so I may ask them if they have some more dates free around our original October date.

Awesome, it sounds like 31st October is good.  I'll get back to them today to confirm:

Any other takers?

I feel like we should do some external advertising, any ideas who we could/should contact about Board Game events?

I'm going to hit a few random game shops.

We're booked for 31st October - http://www.shadow-games.co.uk/welcome/

Cheers for organising this Decar. Just out of interest, during your discussions with Shadow Games to arrange this, I don't suppose they mentioned the free parking incentive from Rugby Town Centre did they?

It looks like we might be able to get 4 hours of free parking at a nearby car park - see http://www.shadow-games.co.uk/freeparking/ (http://www.shadow-games.co.uk/freeparking/) and http://rugbytowncentre.co.uk/freeparking (http://rugbytowncentre.co.uk/freeparking) for more details, but I wouldn't want to take advantage of this if it was for customers only (or whether it's expired). Not to worry if not, I can always contact them but didn't want to hassle if they'd already mentioned it. Cheers.

Good spot Rich, I'll ask them when I email  them next.

It looks like the 4hr things are ok and we can use more than 1 if/when needed.  There's a multistorey near-by so I don't think we'll be taking advantage.  Undoubtedly, some of us will buy something when we're there (even if it's just coffee).  They've been really supportive so far!

So I'm thinking of things everyone could do to prepare for our big day, it's not long now, only 2 months.

I'm putting together a loose schedule for the day:

Mini-Expansions
I'm working on some mini-expansions to be played with the base-game at the Carcassonne Meetup Event.  I won't be giving anything away until the day.  If you're thinking of coming, perhaps you can think of a mini-expansion too.

Challenges
I'm also putting together some challenges for the day; again I don't want to give too much away, but feel free to think of some things or share them.

Bake-Off
I'm also considering a Meeple Bake-off - a challenge to bring the best meeple cake to share on the day.

I've not taken any inspiration from this blog:

Tonight I will share some images of the exclusive fan-expansion I have been working on.

You have no idea what you're getting yourself into. At work I was named "Coolest person in my chair" 2006 - 2008 and 2010 - 2014, and I was a finalist in 2004 and 2009. (*)

I don't really like to talk about it. Suffice to say that it was a travesty and I made my feelings pretty clear at the time. Names were called. Eggs were thrown. Cars were scratched. That's the end of it as far as I'm concerned.

What stuff do you want people to bring along? I can bring along the base game with all of the expansions if needed. I don't have any spin-off stuff though, but I'd love to play some during the day.

Also, is anyone up for watching the Rugby World Cup final at 4pm? I assume there'll be a good pub nearby :)

Fantastic news! Glad you're all sorted.

I've not got any firm plans for the day, so open to suggestions. You're welcome to bring whatever you like. I've got various OCDs so will be bringing 3 copies of the base game, some mini-expansions, a crate full of gifts and prizes (thanks to kettle and Ailurus) and a bag of stuff i owe Dan.....and if I'm lucky some chilli-cheese-scones.

Would probably be good to have some expansions too.
We should have the room 10-5; I'm not too fussed about rugby now that Wales are out :( But watching the Rugby world cup final in Rugby while Andrew is watching it at home does have some appeal.

No doubt we can find a pub with a table for some pub-carcassonne.

Any preferences on Spin-Offs? I was hoping Over Hills and Dales or Star Wars would be here, but it seems unlikely now.

I've got a copy of Discovery & New World I'd like to try too.

Also are there any fan-expansions you've wanted to try? I might be doing one more print run tonight - so could include some smaller expansions.

Half way home but thought I'd stop to share one more photo:

An enormous 7 player game with: myself, Rich_The_Fish, Piklach, JT Atomico, Curt, Dan and a local called Alan (I think).  It consisted of 3 core boxes and the fan  expansions everyone had brought along.

The Astronomers (6 tiles)
Carcassonne: Rugby (6 tiles)
The Chronicles of Carcassonne (4 tiles)
Tug of War as normal tiles (3 tiles)
Trick or Treat (4 tiles and a meeple)
And
I think it's safe to say everyone's favourite: Sinkholes!

It took about 3hrs but we did stop for 30minutes for lunch!

Thanks to everyone for coming. Ill keep this brief, but Ill be posting some more photos and include some rules for the expansions very soon.

Big thanks to Kettlefish for the prizes and big thank you to Ailurua for this fantastic Dragons, which were used in a game with some local gamers but I think I missed a photo!

Hi,

Thanks for the commemorative tiles and dragon, just need to buy the expansion to go with it now! We had a fun couple of hours today playing Carcassonne. Nice to meet other players. If this becomes a regular thing I'm sure we would attend again if we are free.

Daniel and Sarah (from near Rugby).

I'm very happy for you, definitely a great day, but at the same time I am sad for not being them.

Welcome to the forums Daniel. It was good (albeit brief) meeting you! Hopefully we'll be able to catch up properly next time...

Hope you have lots of fun with Inns & Cathedrals. It's a classic. Traders & Builders is a good next step once you're ready to add something else. :)

Best regards,
Dan

PS - another post coming soon, with photos, but I might leave it at this for this evening, other than to say that it was a fantastic evening and I really enjoyed meeting everyone. Thanks so much for masterminding it Decar!

No time for a proper write-up now but here are some of the photos from the day...

We started off with a game of Carcassonne: Star Wars and it was excellent. The new mechanics were very popular amongst us and we liked the battles as well as the team play. Despite their winning a huge city/ asteroid field, Curt and I were victorious against Tom and Jamie. :green-meeple: :red-meeple: :(y)

Psyching ourselves up for the big game which included 3 sets of basic tiles and 5 of our own specially made expansions. 7 of us played and it took somewhere between 3 and 4 hours to play (including a break for lunch)!

When the first sinkhole appeared, meeples belonging to Jacob, Curt and I all fell into it, forming a neat stack in the process! The Trick or Treater had just been introduced into the game as well, and was about to have a very productive evening...

The landscape grew...

...and grew...

...and grew!

Jamie points out where he wants Tom to place his tile with just a few tiles to go until the end of the game.

This is how things looked at the end of the game; and what a game it was! Despite several unfortunate incidents involving sink-holes I was able to win an equal share in the main farm (too big for us to bother counting properly at the time, but approximately 25 to 30 cities) with my last tile of the game.

EDIT: I've now counted this several times from the photos and it looks to me like it's 31 cities/ 93 points! :o

Rich and Jacob checking out some of Basically Wooden's latest creations. :(y)

Jamie pits his wits against a meeple jigsaw puzzle. :)

Some of the other local gamers who joined us for parts of the day; I believe this is the back of new forum member DanielRF's head (left).

A photo of all of the Carcassonne Central members together before Rich and Jacob went home.

We just about managed a quick game of South Seas with Andy from Basically Wooden before Shadow Games closed at 5pm. Jamie won!

Piklach and I just wanted to say thanks for yesterday, we really enjoyed meeting you guys. That huge game was good fun, particularly with all the fan expansions - lots of great work there, especially with the Halloween and Rugby themed ones which were perfect for the occasion! I will upload instructions for Sinkholes in a moment. Sorry that we had to dash off a little early, it would have been good if we could have stayed until the end, but as you know we were already pushing it given our other commitments - thankfully though we got back reasonably quickly and weren't in too much trouble!

Cheers for the gifts and Welcome Tournament prizes, it was very kind and generous of you. These will be added to the (rather rapidly) growing collection and I can't wait to try Wind Roses I (thanks Kettlefish). There were a few other expansions and character meeples that we saw, which will definitely be going on our Christmas lists!

Finally, a big thanks to Decar for organising the day and to Shadow Games for hosting it. We're already looking forward to the next time.

I don't know where to even start!

I had a fantastic time yesterday - my only intention was to ride on from the success of our preliminary Meetup at the UK Games Expo.  I think it's safe to say we managed it!

DanielRF, great to meet you both; I hope you enjoyed Inns & Cathedrals when you got home!

I think most of us thought that a Carcassonne: Star Wars would lead to more Star Wars fans playing Carcassonne.  However, based on this photo I think we may have a new Star Wars fan in the making  :(y)

Having recounted that enormous Asteroid field (34 points), I can only assume that , due to an unforeseen clerical error, perhaps we were actually 41 point ahead of you by the end of the game rather than 9 points behind.  However such is life during galactic times of strife - I suspect we'll have a rematch soon enough.

We all loved the dice rolling elements; though we forgot one rule about scoring points for losing battles (it was winner takes all at our table!).  Carcassonne: Star Wars was great fun as a 4-player team game, I'm looking forward to the Dream Team Tournament - http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=2129.0

The enormous game of Carcassonne (described above) was great fun.  I love the way the sink-hole sits in the middle of the board too.  Rich & Piklach both deserve merits for this expansion (+2 from me).  The rules were intuitive and easy to pick up.  I love game elements that can be used to remove meeple from the board; it's good fun deciding whether to sinkhole your own meeple or one of your opponent's.

Over the next couple of days, I'll be releasing the mini-expansions we made use of during the game - Watch this space!

Yesterday, was the first time I had played South-Seas (thank you Dan); there were some really interesting decisions to be made there too.

Here's a photo of something Basically Wooden had been working on, definitely a surreal Meeple Temple of some description:

(http://www.tehill.net/carcassonne/fun/20151031_153757.jpg) (http://www.tehill.net/carcassonne/fun/20151031_153757.jpg)

In hindsight - I wish I had turned it upside down, filled it with meeple and offered them as treats to any trick-or-treaters that knocked at the door.  There's always next year!

A tremendous event all in all.  I forgot a big thank you to Niell from Shadow Games & Andrew/Sue from Basically Wooden.

Just one last photo from me: a nice close up of that commemorative Dragon & Rugby 2015 tile.

Thank you so much to everyone who could find the time to make it!

It really was a great day! Thanks so much to Decar and danisthirty for organising it and brining along all the games and prizes! Thanks also to kettlefish for providing some of the prizes and the signed tiles, and to Ailurua for the awesome commemorative dragons :D

It was great to meet everyone, I really enjoyed the games that we played. The only problem is that I might now be tempted in to buying several of the spin-offs after just about convincing myself that all I wanted was the base game and expansions!

For those of you who received a copy of Dan's Trick or Treat expansion, I have made a little Halloween-themed tuckbox for it. It should be attached to this post.

Thanks again to everyone involved - I look forward to the next meetup :yellow-meeple:

You keep telling yourself that! ;)

We had a good lead before you took that asteroid field and we caught you up pretty quickly afterwards too. Remember, most of those planets were worth 11 points and Curt had the uncanny ability of being able to take your planets over just before they were completed. At one point he even completed 2 at once (I think) and I got a couple of pretty valuable trade routes too (and a few asteroid fields).

In a game of traditional Carcassonne, a city that big would win the game easily. But I think with Star Wars Carc the features are much more balanced and I do think Curt and I managed to complete more things than you did overall... :P

Looking forward to that rematch already. :(y)

Time to share the first mini-expansion!

It should be noted that these expansions were intended to work with the base game alone - I've not had chance to consider the impact of other expansions.

The Astronomers

In mediæval Europe astronomers would classify phenomenon of the sky.  This evening, a new light can be seen above Carcassonne and astronomers have been sent to record it.

“6-astronomer tiles” – At the start of the game shuffle 6 Astronomer tiles into the deck.

Playing an Astronomer Tile – If a player draws an astronomer tile it can be placed in accordance to the normal rules.  However, a player may decide to place a follower on the ‘Star’ instead of playing it elsewhere on the tile.

Scoring an Astronomer Tile – When a player places a follower on a ‘star’ it may score immediately.  It scores 2 points for every star in the constellation.

Forming a Constellation – A Star is said to be in the same constellation as another star if the star is played in-line with another star, either horizontally, vertically or diagonally.  It does not matter how many tiles are between stars and it does not matter if there are gaps between stars.  Stars may be connected to a constellation more than once; this does not affect the score.

Example

So now we have a fan-made expansion where the box is better than the expansion itself, thanks Jamie! :)

As a follow on from my post the other day I just wanted to say how great it was to see everyone's fan expansions!

I'm looking forward to introducing them to my gaming group and you've all inspired me to think about some of my own fan expansions! Something I hadn't considered before going to the event.

Thanks again everyone for what was a great day. I look forward to the next!

I've just released the Tug of War mini-expansion:

We didn't get change to play it, but the tiles were used in our big game.

I've just released the Carcassonne:Rugby expansion we played at the Meetup:

http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?action=downloads;sa=view;down=304

Only the 'The Chronicles of Carcassonne' are left for me to share.  I may wait and include these 4 deck-manipulating tiles  in a later expansion.

Hi Decar,

As we're fast approaching the 7.5 years anniversary of the meetup, I was wondering if you would consider sharing with the rest of us the Chronicles of Carcassonne...  ::)

I'll have to dig up my notes!
