I’ve had a lot of time on my hands recently and have become pretty addicted to playing Onirim.
Early on, I had a win rate of about 25-30%. Then I gradually got better and my win rate slowly began to increase. By the time I had played 125 games, my win rate had risen to 40%.
The game was getting easier and easier and I was now winning most games I played. Even so, it wasn’t easy getting that percentage up, given my slow start. It took me 59 more games (with 33 wins) to get my overall percentage over 45% for the first time.
I then set myself a goal of reaching an overall 50% success rate. Last night, unable to sleep (ironically, given the theme of the game), I played a lot of games at some ungodly hour and I did it! To get from 45% to 50% took me 72 more games (with 45 wins).
I’m now going to ‘retire’ from the app, because the base game is pretty easy for me now. After winning 40% of my first 125 games, I won 59.5% of my 131 games since. I have the physical game, and it will suck having to shuffle the deck all the time, but I need the seven expansions to add more variety and a new challenge to the game. Still, 99 cents well spent!
Meanwhile, here are some screenshots from various games showing some curiosities.
1. My five-card hand consisting entirely of keys. Keys are the key (as you might expect) to winning the game, but having five at one time is not helpful.
2. Three only three brown keys in the game being the next three cards in the deck (they were naturally the first three of the five revealed cards here; I did not manipulate them). Someone smarter can me could work out the long odds of this happening.
3. With five doors already opened and 48 cards left in the deck, not a single nightmare card had come out yet. Needless to say, this was a pretty easy victory.
4. Discarding a key at the outset of the game to see the next five cards in the deck and turning up one nightmare and four of the eight doors in the deck.
5. With a hand full of red cards already, these weren't exactly the cards I was hoping to see when I discarded a key!
