Title: Carcassonne Central: Advent Quiz MMXVI
Post by: danisthirty on November 17, 2016, 08:29:12 AM
I don't know if anyone else has noticed, but apparently it will be December in just two weeks! How I'm supposed to prepare for Christmas when things like this keep happening is beyond me, but I am at least partly prepared in that I've bought the kids their advent calendars in time for them to open the first door on 1st December. And while I was queuing up in the shop waiting to pay for them, I remembered just how much fun our Advent Quiz was last year! For anyone who either wasn't around last year or didn't take part in it, you can find out all about it by following this link (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=2186)...

So even though I haven't thought of any of the questions yet, I just wanted to make it known that I plan to be running another advent quiz this year following the same format as last year. The only difference will be that this time I won't be providing the same level of individual feedback as I did last time as this got quite distracting at times, especially while I was supposed to be working. Questions should still be answered via PM and there will still be 3 points for 1st correct answer, 2 points for 2nd correct answer and 1 point for all subsequent correct answers. Questions will be posted at a random time each day and the answers will still be the names of members of the CarcC community. Anybody who answers all questions - rightly or wrongly (and not even necessarily on the same day as the questions were posed) - will get some sort of prize. Last year I gave away a signed Carc 2 demo tile to everyone who took part and there will probably be a bonus prize for whoever has the most points at the end.

You'll probably find answers to any other questions on
last year's thread (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=2186), but feel free to ask here if anything isn't clear! Otherwise, good luck and merry Christmas to everyone who decides to take part!

Hi danisthirty,
I am not sure if the year is correct: MMXVII - in my opinion it is 2017 - but this year it is still 2016.

I changed your topic title to reflect the correct Roman numerals. If there was some snarky reason for it, feel free to change it back.  ;)

I'd decided to use roman numerals for the other thread I started at the same time about the 2017 league. But I forgot, and then pasted it onto this one without thinking. Thanks for correcting! :) :(y)

Happy December everyone! It's time to get this show on the road with the first of our 2016 advent quiz questions. :)

Here's a quick recap of the rules before we go on though...

The idea is that between the 1st and 24th December I will post one question per day on this thread, with the answer to each question being the name of a forum member here at Carcassonne Central. If you think you know the answer for any particular day (current or past), send me a PM with the question number and your answer, but please don't post it on the thread as this could spoil the quiz for anyone else who either hasn't seen the question yet or may still be trying to work it out.

Some of the questions are a little bit cryptic but most should still be obvious enough that you'll know the answer straight away or can find it after a few minutes of searching around the forums/ Google. Here's an example:

If you like to subscribe to certain posts so that you get an email whenever anyone posts an update, you'll probably know this person's name from emails containing the following:

"A topic you are watching has been split into two or more topics by _ _ N _ _ _ _ _ _ ."

The answer? MrNumbers of course! :)

If you're the first person to answer any question correctly you will receive 3 points, or if you're the second person to answer any question correctly you will receive 2 points. All other correct answers will receive 1 point, but you may only have one guess per question so don't rush it!

The person with the most points at 5am on Christmas Day (UK time – when I expect to be woken up) will win a small prize. Correct answers and points awarded per question will be disclosed during the period between Boxing day and New Year's Eve (and not before... depending on how bored I get at work).

Now that all that's out of the way we'll get things going with an easy one:

Q1:
In March, this forum member and two other players took part in a record-breaking game of Carcassonne that included 10,007 tiles.

If you think you know who this was, please PM me with the answer - don't answer here!

Thanks to everyone who answered yesterdays question! Here's another... ;)

Q2:
In August, Decar ran our 2nd "GenCan't SoloCon" competition which involved trying to score as many points as possible in a solo game of Carcassonne including the basic tiles + Inns & Cathedrals, Traders & Builders and the Phantom. Competition was fierce, but which forum member was the first to respond to the digital/ physical contest?

If you think you know who this was, please PM me with the answer - don't answer here!

Good luck!

Q3:
In October I had the honour of meeting Klaus-Jürgen Wrede and presenting him with a framed landscape of 150 Carcassonne tiles that had each been signed by members of the Carcassonne fan community from all over the world! Of all the names featured, which forum member signed the cfrf tile from Crop Circles 2 (hint: it features a pitch fork)?

Q4:
In June we held an auction for three hand-drawn/ painted prototype tiles that were used to demo Carcassonne: South Seas when it was first being tested. We raised over 150 Euros for charity in the process! Which forum member won the auction for the only tile (of the three we auctioned) with more than three distinct features available?

In August we were introduced to two new promo tiles that were given away to participants of the Russian Carcassonne championships. Which forum member thoughtfully contacted Hobby World (the Russian Carcassonne distributor) in an attempt to order some of these tiles (and other Russian Carcassonne sets) on behalf of members of CarcF and CarcC?

Q8:
In December, MrNumbers offered to host an online version of HiG's "Carcassonne Action Quiz" via our online chat room (http://sydby.com/carcassonne/irc/index.html) (this is due to be held this Sunday [11th] so please try to find time for it if possible - it's sure to be a blast!) However, when the quiz was first run at the Carcassonne fan meeting in Essen on 13th October which Carcassonne Central member won?

Hello everyone! We're into the middle third of advent now and I hope those taking part have enjoyed the quiz so far. :)

Don't forget, you can answer any question you haven't already answered so even if you've missed a day or two you can still go back to previous questions and PM me an answer for an extra point (assuming you get it right). This also means that even if you've only just discovered that this is going on, it's never too late to join in (provided you start before Christmas). Good luck! :(y)

Q9:
In April, the forums were beset with carelessness when many members of Carcassonne Central suddenly realised that they'd misplaced all of their Corn Circles 1 tiles! ::) Fortunately,
Cundco (http://www.cundco.de) were on hand to help out with their tile replacement service. In one particular case they provided full sets of CC1 tiles to an unlucky forum member who had lost not one, not even two, or three, but FOUR sets of Corn Circles tiles! Who was this?

In September I announced my 2016 Spare Bits Giveaway with a photo containing everything that was up for grabs. All items were freely available to any forum member who a) had a post count of 15 or above, and b) had something in exchange that they were willing to give away to the first person who claimed it. Cathars and Tunnels were among the first to go, but which forum member offered a set of Besiegers tiles in exchange for the item he claimed?

It was first spotted and announced on the forums in November that The Festival is now available for the new artwork edition of Carcassonne. It will be released initially in an exclusive boxed edition of the basic game before arriving at
Cundco (http://www.cundco.de) as a purchasable mini-expansion, but who was it that first broke the news of its existence at Carcassonne Central?

Q14:
In March, kettlefish started a new topic which encouraged everyone to share a little bit about their hobbies outside of board games and thus provided a wonderful opportunity for many people to showcase their numerous talents. It turns out we're generally quite an arty, crafty, sporty, musical, creative and generally pretty crazy bunch of people, but which forum member has released an album titled "Runaway Clay"?

Q15:
In April, a forum member began a new post about a hobby of his which involved collecting small coin-like tokens called "pathtags". He went on to reveal his plans to create his own Carcassonne-themed pathtag and, true to his word, a month later posted a photo of the rather awesome finished article! Several members of the Carcassonne Central community and even Klaus-Jürgen Wrede himself are now the proud owners of some of his pathtags, but which forum member was responsible for designing them and then having them made?

Q16:
This forum member initiated a plan to purchase a number of 140 piece meeple sets made of clear plastic/ "ice" from Carcatronn who used to run our much-loved Carcassonne Shoppe. He even had them posted to him in the US so that he could bring them back to the UK to reduce postage costs for those of us who decided to fork out for a set. What is the name of the forum member who made this happen?

In April, seven members of Carcassonne Central met up at Thirsty Meeples in Oxford to spend some quality time together playing quality games! A surprise highlight of the day however, was this magnificent Carcassonne-inspired mirror they had on the way to the toilets:

As those who've known me for a while will probably have noticed by now, I like and am interested in people which is one of the reasons why I enjoyed going to Essen so much as there were so many forum regulars from CarcC and CarcF to meet and spend time with. Decar and I both spent a while with one forum member in particular at the fan-meeting on 13th October when he kindly demonstrated his magnetic Carcassonne set to us (we both loved it! :(y)) What was his name?

In January this year a new topic was started which was instantly so popular that it was soon difficult to imagine the forums without the constant chatter about various KickStarters (most of which I couldn't afford to back). There are currently over 23 pages of discussion and it has clocked up over 22 thousand views! But which forum member was responsible for creating this wonderful thread?

Q20:
In August this year, What If? bumped an old thread in the "Other Games" forum despite there having been no posts there for fifteen months. It was well worth it though as his post reminded many of us (myself included) to list some of our favourite games that don't necessarily include Carcassonne. This wasn't the case for everyone though, as one forum member included nine Carcassonne games in his top ten list; who was this?

No problem! Glad you're enjoying it. On to the next question...

Q21:
In July, a new forum member introduced himself to the rest of the community via the "Meet the Members" forum. He is a fan of The Messengers and German Cathedrals, has a birthday in September and got a lot of positive feedback on the "I love the postman" thread after he generously gifted JT Atomico with an expertly printed copy of his first expansion: "Industries in Carcassonne". In November, jungleboy started a great thread where several of us have since posted about our Carcassonne highlights for 2016 (and there's still space for more contributions if you haven't posted there yet). Q23:
In April, this forum member posted photos of a very cool game of Carcassonne he'd played with his wife that consisted entirely of unofficial tiles (not even the base game!) His challenge to us was to identify all 12 of the expansions they used, although it looks as though 5 were left unidentified. What was his name?

Only one question left... ;)

Final question!

Q24:
In October, totor66 started a new thread where he suggested a new version of the CAR document for the new artwork edition of Carcassonne. There was much debate about this, and one of the comments suggested that there ought to be an Autumn edition of Carcassonne to go with the Summer, Spring (Carc 2.0) and Winter editions. What is the name of the forum member who went on to create this?

If you think you know who this was, please PM me with the answer - don't answer here!

That's all folks! I hope everyone who took part enjoyed the quiz and the recap of 2016 that I attempted to provide through the questions I posed. You have until 5am tomorrow morning (UK time) to make sure you've answered all questions and I'll be doing a recap of the correct answers over the following week so stay tuned for that.

All that remains is for me to wish you all a very merry Christmas and a happy new year. As always, it's been a pleasure sharing my passion for my favourite game with all of you over this last year and I couldn't wish for a greater bunch of boardgame fanatics to share it with! Thanks everyone for everything you've contributed throughout 2016; I'm already looking forward to 2017 and seeing what fun and games HiG has in store for all of us!

Hello everyone, I hope you're all enjoying your Christmas breaks.

Things are only just beginning to calm down in our house now so I thought I'd snatch a few moments to start going over the answers to the quiz. Expect a gentle trickle of these throughout the week as I don't know how much time I'm going to get to sit down in front of a computer, but I'll do my best! ;)

So, I kicked things off with a very easy one. News of Paul's 10,007 tile game was pretty much impossible to avoid back in March so it's no surprise that everyone got this. But just to be clear, the answer was: Paul (link (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=2382.msg37488#msg37488)).

Everyone got this right, but who got there first? Let's find out based on the points awarded below:

Question 2 proved to be a little tricker than I'd anticipated and of the 12 answers I received, 3 of them were incorrect :(

Competition was fierce, but which forum member was the first to respond to the digital/ physical contest?[/tt]

Decar ran two competitions simultaneously, there was a digital/ physical contest and a physical only contest. I was indeed the first to respond to the physical only contest, but the answer I was looking for was Adrornalin as he was the first to respond in the digital/ physical contest (link (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=2858.msg42237#msg42237)).

And so, on to the points awarded:

Question 3 was about the framed Carcassonne landscape I presented to KJW on behalf of the community and was straight forward enough for almost everyone to get

The most obvious way of finding the answer was to jump straight to the photo I posted of the finished frame, and look for the tile I asked about (the tile in question was fairly unique and so shouldn't have been too tricky to find [top left ;)]). However, there was also
this post (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=2162.msg35562#msg35562). Whichever way you found the answer, the forum member in question was clearly Valheru.

Question 4 was about the South Seas prototype tiles that we held an auction for back in June. I asked who won the only tile with more than 3 distinct features. The only tile with more than 3 distinct features was tile 16 (the crrr which features one city, three roads and three distinct fishing areas). This tile was won for 50 Euros by: JT Atomico (link (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=2800.msg41438#msg41438)).

Q5 was about the new Russian promo tiles that were spotted for the first time back in August. MrNumbers was lucky enough to get hold of a couple of sets from the reigning Carcassonne world champion, but my question related to who was behind an attempt to make a bulk purchase of various Russian Carcassonne items including these sets directly from Hobby World, on behalf of CarcC and CarcF. This forum member was: BigBoss (link (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=2852.msg42223#msg42223)).

Q6 - you didn't have to be there to know the answer to this one as this particular gaming event was covered in some detail on the forums by those who were there. I quite liked the idea that the four of them stuck to the same colours throughout the day, and naturally I was keen to ask who the blue player was? This link (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=2776.msg41440#msg41440) reveals that the :blue-meeple: was Curt194.

Q8 was another easy one, and another question for which there were no incorrect answers. I think I've seen it mentioned in a couple of places on the forums, but he's usually a fairly safe bet when it comes to winning stuff anyway! The winner of the Carcassonne "Action Quiz" at the fan-meeting in Essen was: MrNumbers! Question 10 was possibly my favourite question of the whole quiz. As with the previous question, it was supposed to be difficult but I did inadvertently trick a few of you into providing incorrect answers...

I referred back to February when Decar helped a new forum member named It_sme design some special meeples and a brand new expansion for her boyfriend. I asked who the lucky boyfriend was, and as is revealed in
this post (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=1205.msg35086#msg35086), the answer is: SRBO!

I can think of few people other than Decar who would be prepared to go to this much trouble on behalf of a bunch of fellow Carcassonne fanatics (link (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=2854.msg42131#msg42131)) (which is handy, because this was the correct answer)...

This was an easy one even by my standards as the topic in question has been something that people have gone back to time and time again. So who do we blame for burning these holes in our pockets and for spending far more than many of us are prepared to admit to our partners on exciting new games? I'm going to answer this with something that gets said a lot in our house: "It wasn't my fault! Chooselife made me do it!" I think this is probably going to be the last answer for today. You can expect the remaining 4 answers over the next couple of days depending on if and when I have a chance to sit down at a computer without being hassled by children wanting chocolate, drinks, CBeebies, my phone, attention etc...

Mr. Numbers has to win 3 of the next 4 or win 2 and come in second on 2 to have a chance to beat Kettlefish.  Assuming Kettlefish answered any remaining questions correctly, everyone else has been mathematically eliminated.

Good job Kettlefish and good luck Mr. Numbers!

Thanks again Dan.  This was fun!

I know, I know. Sorry! The fact that I was only at work on one day between Christmas and new year really messed up how much time I was able to spend at a computer without constant interruptions from kids.

I definitely plan to have them all answered before the end of the week.

On a side note, I've been working on something very special indeed to give away as prizes to everyone who answered all questions 8) :(y)

So, after a "slight" delay I'm ready to move on with answering the remaining quiz questions. This is the moment you've all been waiting for! ::) (sorry)

I decided to visit the "Meet the Members" forum for the first question but thought that my initial hint was a bit vague, so clarified it somewhat by referencing the postman thead as well. With hindsight this probably made it a bit easy as everyone worked out that the correct answer was: astargoth (link (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=2849.msg42058#msg42058) and link (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=1205.msg42848#msg42848))!

I'm a big fan of the post I described in this question as it was an interesting idea by itself (playing a game without the base set), which also worked as an open puzzle for everyone else to spot the expansions. But who do we have to thank for this? Of course, it was Leven (link (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=2292.msg37761#msg37761))...

Hopefully you'll agree that this is quite an exciting position to end up in with 3 tied positions (between active contestants at least) and just 1 question left to go! 8) Let's see how it all ended...

Although I was spoilt for choice with some of the wonderful creations that Carcassonne Central's members were responsible for throughout 2016, the quiz wouldn't have been complete without drawing attention to Carcassonne's Autumn edition which was originally suggested by whaleyland but subsequently created by the very talented wolnic (link (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=2944.msg43983#msg43983)).

So that was Christmas. And how have you done?

Congratulations to kettlefish for scoring most points, and thanks to everyone who took part too, especially the nine of you who answered all 24 questions (special mention to MrNumbers and Decar who were the only people to answer all questions correctly). Hopefully it was a fun way to end the year...

As promised, everyone who answered all questions (rightly or wrongly) will be on the receiving end of a prize of some description. More on this later.

All that remains for me to say now is to pretend that it's still 2016 and wish everyone a happy 2017! I look forward to seeing what this year has in store for us as a community and to doing my best to summarise it all in the next advent quiz! :) :(y)

What a race for the finish!

Thanks for organizing a fantastic review of last year Dan!

I hope third place still wins a copy of Dungeon Strike!

Thanks Dan!

I staggered it by making 3 separate visits to the post office. Hopefully my plan worked out for the people in the UK, US, Germany, Latvia, Netherlands and Hungary too!

Mine didn't arrive today.  I am way late getting something from Spielmaterial too, so no surprise.

I can't wait to see it!  Thanks again Dan!

That's disappointing. I was told that it would take the same time to reach US as it would to Thailand... >:(

Hope it gets to you soon. Fingers crossed for tomorrow.

Nope!  No luck today.

The good news is that my Spielmaterial order tracking number was updated saying it has entered the US.  It was shipped on the 9th, so that was 2 weeks ago.  They use DHL, so no idea how that compares to just the post office.

He said they were delicious.

Thanks Dan!

Package arrived. Thank you so much, Dan!
As Dirk only mentioned the candy, I only thought about candy when I saw the Queen's picture on the stamp.
When I flipped the package and saw that content was "boardgame piece", I was like "it's not good to lie to the customs, so there is gotta be something else that is really a boardgame piece!"
And yes! That's so nice a piece. In case someone hasn't got the prize yet, I shall not make this post a spoiler.
So, do I skip my turn out of astonishment when I get this? Or do I use that as a permanent farmer who is not affected by dragon, plague, tower or catapult? >:D
This came to my mind: "big brother is watching you" ;D

I can't believe it's only just got to you ny1050220! That's crazy...

Glad you enjoyed it anyway. I will post something about the tiles, with photos, at some point so that everyone else can see them in all their glory and we're no longer a secret society!

We'll be doing it all again 8 months. Where does the time go?
