Anyone Going?
Sometimes it is good to know if anyone local is attending the convention. Anyone going? Potential for a Carcassonne Meet 'n' Greet.

We will have at the Spiel 2013 in Essen a Whiteboard.

The whiteboard is for the members who like to give some messages to others or if they like to say "hello I was here".

Please post here if you like to come to the Spiel 2013 in Essen.

We are making some actions together with HiG...

Great idea with the Whiteboard!

Can even set up a live stream.  :meeple:

What you need:
1. Lightweight (preferrable) notebook
2. Webcam
3. Free livestream available on the net
4. Internet (should be free or cheap for those living there already having this or able to use the convension's)

Hook up the webcam on a trolley or attach to a cap if you can walk without bouncing.  Post the cam url here and anyone can go there and see the convension live.

Laugh! I had this idea for my half-marathon having the notebook in a backpack streaming my run few years ago but never fulfilled it.

No, we have real whiteboard marker and the members can talk together by real writing some words.

Your option might be a little bit expensive.

I called with Udo Schmitz (Carcassonne-on-Tour) today.

He is also at the Spiel 2013 in Essen.

And he will look at us on Thurday 24.10.2013...  ;D

He tells me that also Klaus-Juergen Wrede will come
to the Spiel 2013 in Essen.

It is possible that he will say hello to us...  ;)

In North America, convention centers charge you an arm and a leg to use their WI-FI. Not sure if the same holds true in Germany.

Let us know if the new Mueller exclusive is there for some reason.
The Spiel in Essen - the publisher present their new stuff, not old stuff. In that Mueller-Box is no new expansion, only some new tiles or with new design.
The choice for the Mueller box is really small.

Hi Carcatronn,
I thought you will be in France that week.
But now you like to come to Spiel 2013 - that is great.
I am only on Thursday at the Spiel.
Do you like to be a part of our forums meeting on Thursday?

Hi Khonnor,
are you there at all days of the Spiel 2013?
No, only on Friday and Saturday.
So sorry - we don't meet each other. But perhaps next year...

Some members are on Friday at Spiel 2013.
On Friday there is also the possibility to meet the members and can play at the Carcassonne Tournament booth in the hall 1.

Next week on Friday 04 10 2013 I will meet Moritz Brunnhofer (HiG) in Leipzig.
There we will talk about the members meetings and how they can meet each other. For Thursday and Friday it is not a problem, but with Saturday and Sunday - I don't know. On Saturday is the German Carcassonne Tournament and on Sunday is the Carcassonne World Tournament.

We created some nice surprisings...
More information follows...
I will update the meeting list.

Main Game:
- Nothing new?

Main Game Expansion/promo:
- The Windrose (Spielbox)
- The Windrose (HiG)
- The Festival (HiG)

Spin-off:
- South Sea

Spin-off Expansion/promo:
- South Sea: Friday

I'm really curious what will be available, also so I can be sure to get everything and not miss out on anything nice.... ;D

The Main game has a new design? Didn't know about that, do you have a picture?
But no new main game...like Wheel Of Fortune, or the base game with Kornkreise a few years back. I know there is the Muller box, but I doubt it will be at Essen.

Do you also know when The Festival reprint (with thicker tiles hopefully) will happen? In time for Essen or probably later?

I am back from my trip to Essen.
It was a great day and also to meet all the members.
Especially to meet Carcatronn and MrNumbers.  ;D

As always we were looking for "lost" items... But then we found all the "surprising bags" for the members...

Tomorrow on Friday 25 10 2013:

We put for the members (Khonnor, terkina, bulifm) the two bags in one bag.
The bag you can find in the hall 1 at the HiG-tournament booth.
Please ask for Udo (Carcassonne-on-Tour) or if he is not there then for Thomas (Herner Spielezentrum). Udo has the bags.

Khonnor,
I've talked with Carcatronn and I told him that you will come tomorrow to the Spiel 2013.
He likes to meet you at the HiG-tournament booth at around 12:00 pm.

There you can talk about Carcassonne and play Carcassonne-South Sea.

Please name your members name and the CarcassonneCentral forum to the people at the HiG-tournament booth then you can get in there...

Awesome news, Kettle!

So I don't have to run from hall 3 to hall 1 in 15 minutes?  ;)

Great to meet Carcatronn. I'll be with two friends, so if possible we could play South Seas with the four of us, if Tronn is available.  :blue-meeple:

We're leaving for the fair right .... NOW!  8)

Thomas knows our place with the whiteboard.
Did you ask him if Udo is around somewhere?

That is the typical chaos at Spiel...

Ask if you can write a message on the whiteboard and when you will be back at the booth.

This is a short report what I have written to Scott:
Quote
We were around 16 people and Klaus-Juergen and Udo (Carcassonne-on-Tour) were looking at us also Thomas from Herner Spielezentrum.

I met MrNumbers - that was one of my highlights - he comes from Latvia.
Also I met Carcatronn - he presented some of his items from his Shoppe, but not for selling, only for promotion.
The items are looking good at the whiteboard.

I've talked with Barbara Nostheide from Spielbox and the complete HiG team.
Some rule clarification with Georg Wild, but I have to say, that I can't clear all questions, because the time was so short to talk about it.

And the members meeting was great. They all took photos with Klaus-Juergen and they have now their signs from him and they played the Carcassonne-South Sea...

My members at CarcF gave me a gift: The Mueller Edition...

Klaus-Juergen has now his birthday fan-expansion...

Interesting - the surprising bags were not there - we looked here and there no one knows - it costs around half an hour to find the big box with all the small bags... That is a typical chaos at the exhibition...

I just got back from two very long, but awesome days at Spiel!

On Friday we arrived at 11:00 and I went straight to the Tournament area to wait for other members and Udo (nobody from the booth seemed to know where he was). I waited till 12:25 and decided to leave and come back later. When I returned later I met Carcatronn and his friend. Amazingly kind people!

Udo was also there and gave me the goodie bag! I was flabbergasted to find Die Belagerer tiles inside! Awesome stickers and signed tiles from Klaus! After that we tried desperately to find a spot a play South Seas, which we finally managed to do, but we had to play it standing up... 8)
I really like the colors/artwork, but have to get used to no scoring taking place during the game (not really). Tronn, it was really great to meet you and thank you so much for the die! Hope we'll be able to play a game of carc again sometime soon.  :blue-meeple:

On Saturday I participated in a meeple-stacking contest and won a copy of The Windrosen. My friend played twice, but unfortunately lost both times.
I also got the Festival and Freitag tiles and The Spielbox magazine with a different Windrose.

All in all a pretty good Spiel again. Unfortunately the hotel was not that good and I hardly slept, so the second day Spiel was very tiring. The fair was also very crowded on Saturday imo. Next year we'll probably go on Thursday and Friday, like we did last year.

Also, thank you Kettlefish for arranging the goodie bags! It was really appreciated and made my day! Hope we'll meet next year.

Hi Khonnor,
I am happy to "hear" that you and Carcatronn met each other and that you have now your bag.
The HiG team was very hard working last week to pack all the bags (the small one and the big one for each member).
In your big bag is also the small bag.

I hope you enjoy it... I was not sure if you would meet Klaus-Juergen, so I put a autograph card from him inside the bag.

We like to make the members meeting for both forums (Carcassonne-Forum and CarcassonneCentral) as a regular institution. The best day is the Thursday at Spiel, because there is each year a small tournament for Carcassonne and thematically that will work fine together.

As for me, I haven't felt so ignored as a non-White person for a long time.  I had an entire day of 'don't know', 'ask that other person', or 'I'll come back to you later'. The only person whom I managed to have more than one line of conversation was the Dutch national champion, who talked to me in a friendly, but slightly condescending manner, but at least he bothered to talk to me.

I made some purchases, but otherwise I gave up and went to Duesseldorf where people spoke to me politely in Japanese.

Just got back from my very long trip to Europe. The first part was in France and was definitely the highlight of the trip! Playing Carcassonne in Carcassonne had always been a dream of mine and was finally fulfilled.  :blue-meeple: The castles and countryside were simply breathtaking and is definitely a place I will travel back to.

The second part was in Germany for Spiel. Meeting kettlefish, Khonner, Ratz65, and all of the other forum members was so much fun! Had starter tiles from all of the Carcassonne games signed by Klaus-Jurgen Wrede, and had an exclusive interview with him upstairs in the press-conference area with all of the new releases. Got some games of South Seas in with a few different forum members with Udo from Carcassonne On Tour helping us with the rules. Had a few meetings with Moritz and the HiG team as well. Lastly, was able to hunt down the last copy of Carcassonne The City (wooden box first edition) at the fair literally as they were closing down.  8)

All in all, had a very fun, relaxing, and eventful trip.

Khonnor, Carcatronn,
I've called today with Udo.
He sent to you many greetings.
He is happy to met you at Spiel 2013 in Essen.
He told me that on Friday the tournament area from HiG was full with the Stone Age tournament. So you both (and your friends) had to play somewhere else...

I think next year on Thursday - that is the best day to play Carcassonne...

(Thank you for the support from some of you. Still feeling very distressed after a week.

At many stalls I would stand at the counter, the counter-person would (pretend to) be busy doing some other things, and then served customers who arrived after me. I knew that it wasn't a language problem, because often they would be speaking in English with those other customers. And then there were the people whom I wanted to ask questions from, and then they would pretend to have not heard me, or tell me that they were busy, or they had to ask someone else, and then forgot that I existed.

I remember there were two hotdog stalls, not very far apart from each other in the corridor between Hall 1 and 3.  One was staffed by a White middle-aged lady, and the other by a Black young lady. At least when I was there, the stall staffed by the White lady had a queue, and the stall staffed by the Black lady was empty. I chose the stall that didn't have a queue. I could tell from her tone, and her facial expression, that she hasn't been very busy that day.

I was there watching the German tournament for quite some time. (I saw some marvelous moves that I learnt from, thanks.) There was also a meeple-stacking table. People were invited to meeple-stack, but then perhaps I look uninterested, or perhaps I was invisible, I was never invited. At one point, I realised that I was standing at a position too close to the meeple-stacking table, and I would be in the way of people who wanted to meeple-stack. Before I had the chance to move away, the meeple-stacking table was moved away from me. Perhaps they were packing up, but then the table was certainly still there at its new location for quite some time, less than 5 steps away from its original location.

People whom I managed to get a response from were mostly polite, and I think most do not have overt xenophobic feelings. However, many seem to not know how to interact with a non-White person. This is quite different from the Germany that I knew; I've had extended stays in Germany, I live on the German border, I worked for a German research institute, and many of my current colleagues are German. This is one of the most scarring experiences I've had in Europe.)

Joaquim00,
I don't think that has anything to do with the colour of the people.
Last year I don't know much people at Spiel so I went a long time around without much personally contact for talking or to play with other peoples.

Sounds like it was good time for most of the Carc Central members.

A real shame to hear about Joaquim's experience. Good that you can see it wasn't necessary a German problem, but a world problem. I hope you can find some peace. I married a darker skinned (by Thai standards) Thai lady. In Thailand the darker you are the worse you are treated. Then because she's married to a white guy they treat her even worse.

I can comprehend that but can't say I understand that...  Sounds something like what I've heard happens in India re lighter coloured skin.  I'm wondering whether your wife is treated worse because the rest of them are jealous?

My day at Spiel 2013 in Essen - 24.10.2013:

The new halls at the Spiel:
The halls are big and high. It was very loud in the halls. And there were so many people at the Spiel...

We had some highlights at the Spiel 2013:
- my talk with HiG
- the whiteboard
- the surprising bags
- the members meeting
- Klaus-Juergen visited us at the Spiel
- the present for Klaus-Juergen Wrede - his birthday fan-expansion
- the game play: Carcassonne-South Sea
- my talk with Spielbox

- my talk with HiG:
My first date on that day was at the HiG booth with Georg Wild - clarification of the rule questions.
I was about 15 minutes to late - so we had only a short time to talk about the rules.
Some points are still not really clear for me, that means, I need to talk or to write again with HiG... - but more about the clarifications will come in the correct forums.

- my talk with Spielbox:
After the members meeting I had my appointment with Barbara Nostheide from Spielbox. It was a nice talk, but the result is, that I didn't get my answers for the still open rules questions (especially for "The Plague").
We decided that should be useful for all the Carcassonne fans that we will get one day some answers and we will work together the next time for logical clarifications.

more information follows....
Title: Re: Spiel 2013 at Essen
Post by: kettlefish on November 14, 2013, 01:33:39 PM
- the whiteboard:
After my talk with Georg Wild:
I've got a banana from someone at the HiG booth. Together with the HiG-team we were decorating the whiteboard. Georg Wild gave me some meeple magnets. First we had to unpack each magnet and then I put the meeple magnets on the whiteboard.  At the whiteboard we pinned the plans of the halls and some other information.
The whiteboard is big: 90x60cm - The transport in the train was interesting and at the metro in Essen: there were to much people - I had no choice to get in. The third one was mine - that was the reason why I was to late at the meeting with Georg...

- the surprising bags:
Then we were looking for the big box with the surprising bags... - we can't find the box. In the meantime I've got a banana from the HiG team...
Then someone from the HiG team rembered - the box could be at the tournament booth in the other hall. Together with Jasmin and Gerog I went to the next hall and we gave the people some cards for the HiG prize competition.
Then at the tournament booth: Thomas was not there - only he knows where he had put the box with the surprising bags... Again I had to wait...
Finally he came back and he gave me the big box. I looked inside and saw at the botton of that box the small box (a Dominion game box) with the small bags.
With that small box I went back to the HiG booth in hall 3.

more follows...

Title: Re: Spiel 2013 at Essen
Post by: kettlefish on November 14, 2013, 02:02:08 PM
- the surprising bags - part 2:

It was 10 minutes before 12pm... and I came back to the HiG booth.
Some of the members were waiting... But first I had to go inside the HiG booth (they had a small room) there I put in each of the small surprising bag my mini bags...
The small bag had a mini expansion and some other things...

And then I gave the members the small surprising bags at the booth . The laugh was great when they saw the Dominion box...
After that all the members went to the hall 1. I took the whiteboard with me...

A week before I called with Moritz Brunnhofer. Together we decided what pieces should be inside the two bags... He was thinking - hmm - something should come inside what I did not know - and yes he remembered correct - there were some surprising which I never bought in the past, because it was made of plastics...

The second surprising bag (the Carcassonne bag) included some stickers and a second mini expansion.

- the members meeting:

At the tournament booth the members meeting took place.
The members got the second surprising bag.
We talked together...
It was great to meet the members - and they gave me a present (the mueller box  ;D )
MrNumbers (our special guest) gave me also a present a cup from his home.
Carcatronn was also there. He had shown us his articles from the CarcassonneShoppe.
Lupa had made some meeple biscuits for all of us...
At CarcF we have the members: Udo (CoT), Herner Spielezentrum and Klaus-Juergen. At both forums (CarcC+CarcF) we have also the member: Hans-im-Glueck (HiG). With that power of these - we had the perfect place to talk and play and all the surprising bags...

Excursion:
- whiteboard - part 2:
Carcatronn put his magnetic pieces at the whiteboard. I have to say - the magnetics were looking perfect on that whiteboard...

- Klaus-Juergen visited us at the Spiel
And then Klaus-Juergen came... (earlier than I thought) - I was sitting on the floor at the botton of the small stage near the whiteboard and did some "office work" for the fourms... I looked up and Klaus-Juergen stood in front of me...
And we members didn't finished our signs for the birthday card for him...
He was laughing... - but we all finished our work...
Finally Klaus-Juergen got his present...
After that the members got some autographs from him and they made some photos and talked with him...

- the present for Klaus-Juergen Wrede - his birthday fan-expansion

Excursion: some moths before the Spiel:
Udo (CoT) told me that Klaus-Juergen Wrede would have this year his 50th birthday.
At CarcF we decided to create a fan-expansion to his birthday in August.
We created some ideas in August but we hadn't any rules only a starting tile and some ideas for landscape tiles.
Through HiG I've sent to Klaus-Juergen the first draft of the fan-expansion.
Maik and I met him at Leipzig in October. Klaus-Juergen asked for the finished version of his birthday present. There we promised him that he would get that present at our members meeting three weeks later.

So the members at CarcF had much to do in the short time. And we finished it. The rules and the fan-expansion are great.
"The chronicles of Carcassonne - birthday in the land of milk and honey"

The birthday fan-expansion:
- a new starting tile (2x3) with a picture from Klaus-Juergen
- 10 landscape tiles (10 different symbols)
- 90 tokens (9 tokens of each symbol)
- rules

Here is the link to the download section at CarcF:
http://www.carcassonne-forum.de/viewforum.php?f=31 (http://www.carcassonne-forum.de/viewforum.php?f=31)
The thread is:
Geburtstag im Schlaraffenland (http://www.carcassonne-forum.de/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=1248)

(we still haven't translated the rules in English yet - so it is only in German)

- whiteboard - part 3:
Excursion:
The whiteboard was also a part for the meeting that Carcatronn had with Moritz Brunnhofer at the HiG booth...

Thanks for all the nice reports kettlefish. The meetings, interaction and detail really gives us an idea what it will be like to actually be there.

What games did you get to play? Any really good new ones?

Did you get to play any Carcassonne with any of the members?

Thanks for all the nice reports kettlefish. The meetings, interaction and detail really gives us an idea what it will be like to actually be there.

What games did you get to play? Any really good new ones?

Did you get to play any Carcassonne with any of the members?

- the game play: Carcassonne-South Sea

We had five tables at the tournament booth. Each playing team: 3-4 members. We all play the Carcassonne-South Sea. I played together with Maik, Koregan and Benny.
Four of the tables were round - it was not easy to play Carcassonne-South Sea at this small tables...
The best place to play had Carcatronn and his girl friend and mentor09 - they had a correct table for game play.
The other tables were used for a tournament. The people had in that tournament the last chance to came in into the German championsship. Two of our members (Christian H and his wife Cymoril) are playing there in that tournament. In that tournament the people also played the Carcassonne-South Sea.
Thomas from Herner Spieleverlag and Udo (Carcassonne-on-Tour) were also at our tables and they explain to us the rules and game play Carcassonne-South Sea.

At CarcF facebook are some photos from the members-meeting.

Yesterday I received my swag bag from Germany:

No copy of Frietag (Friday) mini-expansion, but I'm happy to get my hands on the Besiegers.

If somebody knows what the two things are in the top-right corner of the picture, please explain because I'm very confused. I tried to peel one of them apart thinking they were stickers of some kind, but that didn't work out very well.

BTW, if Gantry is lurking out there somewhere, I have a bag of this stuff for him too.

Hi Scott,
I am happy to see that HiG remembered that you should get two pieces of this surprising bag, because one is for gantry.

The two pieces on the right are cards, we had also such sickers.
The members at the members meeting got the card with their name on them.

At the Spiel we had "two" surprising bags. You and gantry got both bags in the big cotton bag.

The Friday expansion was not a part from this surprising bag. Some people bought it at the CundCo Shop in Essen.
Perhaps Carcatronn got his Friday expansion as a gift directly from Moritz Brunnhofer.
