European Union
« on: February 12, 2020, 07:31:10 AM »
So I just received my third major expansion. Having received the base game at Christmas, I bought Traders & Builders [2] in January from Amazon UK as it was the only one (of the two I was sure I wanted at that time) that they had in English. Later in January my impatience for Inns & Cathedrals [1] resulted in me buying it, from the same source, in French. By the time February began I'd decided that Under The Big Top [10] was the third and final major expansion I wanted. For similar reasons I ended up buying it in German.

By then of course I had found the fabulous Wikicarpedia and so the English rules weren't going to be necessary anyway. In fact I ended up embracing the idea of buying it in German. I'm not going to be a Carcassonne completist, but I do understand the appeal of all these beautiful boxes, tiles and figures and the links between them in terms of theme, game mechanic and artwork. By adding a third language with my third expansion I've added another link. How many other, European, languages is the game available in I wonder? If ever I change my mind about the other major expansions, other languages will help me justify them to myself.  ;)

Also of course I could justify a post titled "European Union", sadly the only EU that the UK is still a part of.

(@moderators, I won't touch on politics again, promise!]

Thanks for the info wolnic.  :(y)

it's almost like you're trying to tempt me! ;)

But I think I should keep some languages in reserve for future expansions. I wonder what and when the next major expansion will be? (Goes to look at Wikicarpedia to see if there's s pattern to the sequence of release dates ...) Is there any information/opinion out there as to what HIG's plans are for the future of Carcassonne?

There is a Chinese, probably not legal version on Ali Express. I almost ended up buying because the low cost and lot of expansions, but later I read it somewhere the tile sizes are not compatible with the original.

Yes, it is a Chinese knock-off...  :'(

They don't have any shame in manufacturing replicas of anything and selling them at low priced all over the world.

I'm a little late to the party here as I didn't know this thread existed. So apologies for that.

However, I am quite interested in how many different languages Carcassonne rules have been translated into. I too ended up at the Carcassonne page on wikipedia and found the list of publishers there to be quite useful. From this (and with meepledrone's additional comments) it seems Carcassonne is available in the following languages:

1. Bulgarian
2. Catalonian
3. Czech
4. Dutch
5. English
6. Estonian
7. Finnish
8. German
9. Greek
10. Hungarian
11. Italian
12. Japanese
13. Latvian
14. Lithuanian
15. Polish
16. Portuguese
17. Russian
18. Slovak
19. Spanish
20. Swedish

This list doesn't include Norwegian or Danish, although it was pointed out that Safari is available in these languages. Can someone clarify whether the basic game/ expansions are also available with rules in these languages? Potentially though, the answer is around 20 - 22 by the looks of it?

There there is the issue of the game being available in Chinese, but since this is unofficial I haven't included it on the list here.

Does anybody else have anything to add to it?

Arabian - Superheated Neurons
Bulgarian - Fantasmagoria
Brazilian Portugese - Grow Jogos e Brinquedos
Catalan, Spanish, Portugese - Devir
Czech, Polish, Slovak - Mindok
Chinese, Thai - Swan
Danish, Norvegian, Swedish - Bergsala
Dutch - 999 Games
English - Z-Man
Estonian, Latvian, Lithuanian - Brain Games
Finnish - Lautapelit
French - Filosofia
German - Hans in Gluck
Greek - Kaissa
Hebrew - Monkey
Hungarian - Piatnik
Italian - Giochi Uniti
Icelandic - Nordic Games
Japanese - Mobius
Korean -  Korea Boardgames
Romanian - Cutia
Russian - Hobby World
Turkish - NeoTroy Games

By my research there are these versions.

There are also versions from others publishers (Rio Grande for English, Albi for Czech, publishers which not have licence yet for publish Carcassonne).
Then are versions in languages which are not published for that country where this language has majority, like Russian version exists from Brain Games, but its not with K at back, becaouse it's not for Russian market, but for russian minority in baltic states.
Also exists by finish publisher Lautapelit swedish translation, because there is big swedish speaking minority in Finland.

So 32 languages?
(Updated 29.7.2020, added Icelandic)
(Updated 30.7.2020, added Arabian)

Enjoy the info compiled by Murphy013 here:

http://wikicarpedia.com/index.php/Collections_and_Expansions

Not only the languages but also the releases available in each language: base games, major expansions, boxed and unboxed expansions, spin-offs and their expansions, magazines,... you name it :o

Sit and cry if you are a completionist at heart!  ;)

I want call some of them my own, but I rediscovered Carcassonne to late.

You find some languages/publishers which were on no list.

I wanna thank Carlium which provided expansions which weren’t on my plan. I also updated BGG with >60 “new” versions.

P.S.: the list is also available in German. Just add /de.

Have fun.
