Title: Carcassonne Challenge 1 - Expand the World
Post by: Paul on August 18, 2014, 08:32:38 AM
Hi, everyone!

Thought I share a challenge I tried few days ago. This requires a lot of expansions but I managed to come quite far using only the most common releases.

-The idea is to start with the castle (The 12x tiles from The Count) and build outwards.

-Building around the castle needs 18 tiles. However, each expansion(s) you choose to use needs to be a total of 18 tiles and all must of course be used and have legal placements as a real game (road-road, city-city etc).
You can use The Tower for example, has 18 tiles, or use Abbey and Mayor + Windrosen totaling 18 tiles as well. Princess and the Dragon is 30 tiles and thus cannot be used (yet).

-Next step is to build around the previous finished area, this time it requires 26 tiles using any combination of expansions. Three minis makes 24 so that won't work well, unless you have the School!

-Continue building around using the method above and see how far you can make it! Post images here if able to. I managed to build 4 times around the castle and the image will be revealed in September!

Good luck! Looking forward to see the results.

lol im stuck at the 4th level so far haha 42 tiles.. i only have 1 exp of 30, 4 of 8 and 1 of 6 left.. and the base game (72) and the 2, rivers (12 tiles each, but they block the next ring..)
so if i had the school, i could finish the 4th ring..

just for info, every ring there come 8 more tiles in it,
so at the 8th ring (not counting the count)you can use the base game for the first time!

But my try:

1st ring(18): Corn Circles II (6), Abbey and Mayor (12)
2nd Ring(26): Inns and cathedrals(18), Witch and Wizard(8)
3th ring(34): Traders and Builders(24), Cult and heretics(5), King and Scout(5)

Not bad at all!

I'm stuck at the fifth ring myself. It would be interesting to see if someone can reach the base game ring (usage of the base game), sort of speak.

Is there even enough expansions to go around or should we tweak the rules and let everyone use the same expansions in several 'rings' but only one for each?

City of Carcassonne
1st ring (18 tiles) – Inns & Cathedrals
2nd ring (26 tiles) – Count, King & Robber + The Tunnels
3rd ring (34 tiles) – Traders & Builders + The Festival
4th ring (42 tiles) – Princess & The Dragon + The Catapult
5th ring (50 tiles) – The Tower + Bridges, Castles & Bazaars
6th ring (58 tiles) – Carcasonne Minis + Cathars/Siege + Corn Circles I + Corn Circles II
7th ring (66 tiles) – Abbey & Mayor + Hills & Sheep + Wheel of Fortune (expansion tiles only) + The Cult (Spielbox edition) + The Plague
8th ring (74 tiles) – Carcassonne + The School
9th ring (82 tiles) – Wheel of Fortune (basic tiles only) + Windrose + Monasteries + Mini Expansion + Besiegers + Porxada

There. See if anyone can get to all 9 rings of Carcassonne!

I think inns and cathedrals cant be in the first ring, because some parts wouldnt connect

I am certainly going to try this again. Hopefully I can complete the fifth ring this time.

Using The Ferries on ring 2 caused a lot of roads, tough to connect further. I don't have the Tunnel, Cathars, School, nor Quarterly or the Festival. But one could use substitute that matches these.

Wheel of Fortune I have the old version, not sure how Big Box 5 relates. But going by watermarks is the intended general rule. My Count, King Robber has one watermark for all (10 tiles) but the River is excluded in the challenge.

There. See if anyone can get to all 9 rings of Carcassonne!

If you are following the Dante Inferno model for your rings then the 9th circle should be the Winter edition, Unfortunately it is 84 tiles but you can always hide the extra tiles under the hills from the Hill and Sheep expansion.

Shoot! I forgot about the River II tiles in Count, King & Robber. Regarding Wheel of Fortune, I was talking about the original, which included 19 tiles with expansion elements and 53 without.

That being said, I wonder if the Rivers I & II (plus one of the tiles from Games Quarterly) could be used to make most of a ring. The split on River II may be a problem, though.

My Wheel of Fortune box, all the tiles bear the same watermark. So in this challenge, this would be used no earlier than in a ring of at least 72 tiles.

As for the river, it's a pickle. Best we have it excluded. There's only so much crazyness we can fit into this challenge.  :@

Here's my second try. Not only did I manage to complete the fifth ring, but all the expansions are placed in a symmetric shape.

There were no more expansions for me to try the sixth ring. I wanted to use substitutes but I do not have Hills and Sheep tilesheet to compare with.
Sixth ring is 58 tiles and it may be possible with this:
- 18 Hills and Sheep
- 12 Castles, Bridges and Bazaar
- 10 The Festival
- 10 GQ Expansion (without the 2 river tiles)
- 4 The Cathars
- 4 The Tunnels

- Alternatively replace The Cathars and The Tunnels with 8 tiles from The Plague. The Plague is only six tiles. Thanks, MrNumbers.  :(y)

I have not checked this yet, but It may be possible to use River I in one ring and then use River II in the other to have the river sections joined between rings.

Great job done, Yellow!
You have a big patience to make this :)

The Plague has only 6 tiles.

Yellow,
how long did you need for this Carcassonne Puzzle?

Yellow,
how long did you need for this Carcassonne Puzzle?

You mean how long it took for me to make it? The fifth ring version took me 2 hours while watching Transformers 2 - Revenge of the Fallen.

@Yellow, you have an illegal tile placement. Are you aware of it?

That god-awful tile from Catapult? Its design is so bad that it can hardly count as a fail.

If you mean some other tile I did not catch it during a quick skimming.

I think they saw the wrong placed tile but the Catapult tiles are placed correctly.

I see it now. Can't believe I missed it. Then again, staring for 2 hours at tiles focusing on a task like this, hardly surprising.

Fear not! For I have a fix:

1. Rotate the Robber tile 90 degree to the right
2. Switch the Dragon tile with the cloister with the Dragon tile 2 squares to the right, the one with the volcano
3. Rotate the Dragon tile with the volcano switched above 90 degree counter clockwise
4. Lastly, the Crop Circles tile above the recent switched Dragon tile with the cloister is rotated 180 degree

I still have the tiles in this order tucked in a box, if you demand (as a punishment) a new image.  :@
