Title: Carcassonne Central: Advent Quiz MMXIX
Post by: Meepledrone on November 27, 2019, 06:42:33 PM
Hi all,

For those unaware of what it is really going on, I will just break it for you: Christmas is coming!!! So does Winter... at least in the Northern Hemisphere!

In preparation of the coming events, here at Carcassonne Central a lost is happening behind the scenes. Just have a look at the Meeple Council in session while discussing...

The Advent Calendar Quiz MMXIX

(https://i.imgur.com/hP70GAt.jpg)

- Danisthirty: Well guys, what will be doing this year for the Advent Calendar? We are running out of time...
- Snowman: Lean back and chill! We have everything under control.
- Danisthirty: I should get started with our traditional Advent Calendar Quiz. You know, it is a  great opportunity to review what had happened over the course of the year within our little community, and to test our members' knowledge of who said what (or at least their ability to use the Search feature anyway).  ^-^
- Santa Claus: OK... Drink your tea or it will freeze.
- Gingerbread Man: What if we try something different this year? What if we ask questions about Carcassonne?
- Danisthirty: Yeah, Why not?
- Santa Claus: We could prepare 24 questions and post one each day...
- Snowman: Each of us could be in charge of questions with different levels of difficulty
- Gingerbread Man: Oooohhhh, that sounds terrific. I will prepare questions involving figures and/or tiles of one expansion only. Let's call it level 1.  ;)
- Snowman: Uhmm, I will do Level 2
- Santa Claus: Fine, I will be in charge of Level 3.
- Danisthirty: Awesome, and I will  pick Level 4... Don't faint when you see my qu...
- The Grinch: Well, well, well... Even though I was not invited I will prepare my share of questions. You know I love to ruin Christmas parties so thank you for the opportunity... I will take Level 5. Devilish ones... Mwahahaha!
- Santa Claus: Oh! This sounds lovely, right?
- Snowman: Er...
- Gingerbread Man: I'm hyperventilating...
- Danisthirty: Oh Geez! This is just getting started...
- Santa Claus: ...
- Snowman: Er...
- Gingerbread Man: I'm still hyperventilating...
- The Grinch: By the way, stop this gibberish and prepare the rules...
- Danisthirty: OK. I'll do it. In the meantime, guys, get your questions ready.
- Snowman: Er...
- Gingerbread Man: I'm still hyperventilating...
- The Grinch: You are lucky, you have a few days ahead to get yourselves together!
- Santa Claus: Would you care for a hot cocoa?
- The Grinch: No, thank you. I have no time for social calls. I have a lot of evil to do... Ciaaaaaaooooooooo!
- Snowman: Er...
- Gingerbread Man: I'm past hyperventilating... I'm fainting
- Santa Claus: Well, now more than ever we would need our members to help us solve all the questions no matter what. The Grinch cannot get the satisfaction of making us fail.
- Danisthirty: OK. OK. I will reserve a post to publish the rules once you recover from the shock and we can resume our meeting. A nice cuppa anyone?
- Santa Claus: So, let's get cracking!

What will be the outcome of the Meeple Council? We'll know soon.

Cheers!

- Danisthirty: Waiting for the rules, right? This space is reserved. I'll post them in no time. Thank you in advance for your patience...

...

- Danisthirty: Here you are a brief recap of the rules for the Carcassonne Central Advent Quiz!!! An excerpt of a summary of an excerpt...

Quote
:red-meeple: Between the 1st and 24th December I will post a small Carcassonne scoring question each day (at a random time), to which the answer will be points scored by one or more players according to the question.

:yellow-meeple: When you know the answer, don't post it on this thread! :-X Because then everyone will know, and we don't want that. Instead, send Meepledrone a PM including the question number and your answer for that day. He won't respond to your PM (please don't be offended), but if you get the answer correct you will win one or more quiz points depending on how many others have answered it correctly before you:

1st correct answer5 points
2nd correct answer4 points
3rd correct answer3 points
4th correct answer2 points
All subsequent correct answers   1 point

:green-meeple: There's no cut-off date for any particular questions so don't despair if you miss any. You can even answer all 24 questions on Christmas eve if you want, but don't expect to score big overall...

:blue-meeple: Once Christmas and boxing day are behind us, I will post the correct answers – one at a time – along with who won the big points (or indeed any points) and total scores per participant. This is where it gets really fun! :o :(y)

:black-meeple: The overall winner will be the person with the most points at the end of the quiz, but there is likely to be a small prize for everyone who answers all questions regardless of whether they manage to answer any of them correctly. It will be a surprise. O:-)

Any questions, please ask now. Otherwise, you can expect question 1 of 24 sometime on Saturday! O0

- Danisthirty: So now you know. I hired Meepledrone for menial administrative tasks. So be ready for some small Carcassonne scoring questions, one per day. The Meeple Council has already delivered and has selected 24 questions in various levels of complexity according to the number of expansions involved (from 1 to ...
- Gingerbread Man: My questions are the cutest ever!
- Danisthirty: Will you let me finish???
- Gingerbread Man: Uhmmm... OK
- Danisthirty: Were was I? Ah yes! The levels of difficulty go from 1 to 4
- The Grinch: Tsk tsk... You are wrong... I added Level 5... You will be overwhe...
- Danisthirty: Wait!! I hear your dog bark...
- The Grinch: ....OK... I'm off.
- Danisthirty: ...  ::)
- The Grinch: ...  ???
- Danisthirty: OK. Thank you for leaving! Uff...
- Snowman: (In the background) OMG! I left my Winter Edition questions outside the freezer and they melted...  :o
- Santa Claus: (In the background) Nooo, Not again...  >:(
- Snowman: (In the background) My rules in paper got soaked. What do I do now...?
- Santa Claus: (In the background) *Sigh* You can use WICA...  ::)
- Danisthirty: Everything is under control, I expect you all December 1st.... Ciaaaaaaoooooo!  ;D

The Meeple council is still up looking for answers... And they are not the number 42.

- Danisthirty: This is a tricky one, right?
- Snowman: You bet...

Question #2: The Snowman has completed this crowded city. How many points does each meeple score?

Important reminder to the participants

- Danisthirty: If there are several meeples involved in a question, please indicate which meeple is scoring what points in your answers.
- Danisthirty: ... There may be some meeples scoring X points, other meeples scoring 0 points and even others not scoring at all...  :o
- The Grinch: You are like a bearded mother! Let them have incomplete answers... and 0 points! Love it!
- Santa Claus: You are like a mother but green!

The Meeple Council is deliberating...

(https://i.imgur.com/yRG6YIV.jpg)

- Santa Claus: I can spend the whole day admiring it...
- Snowman: Yes it is very beautiful... Its triangular field crossed by that bridge. It was never clear to me if the bridge connected the two city segments or not...
- Danisthirty: Do you think it is a good prize for the winner of the Advent Calendar Quiz 2019?
- The Grinch: (distant voice) Will you please shut up? Some of us need a good sleep to be as mean as possible in the morning!
- Gingerbread Man: (distant voice) Stop whining and drink your glass of milk.

- Danisthirty: This is my first question this year...

Title: Re: Carcassonne Central: Advent Quiz MMXIX
Post by: Meepledrone on December 05, 2019, 02:36:31 AM
- Snowman: Did you read the Meeple Times yesterday?
- Gingerbread Man: Yes, I was surprised.
- The Grinch: I was delighted, Master. I loved the statistics: almost 30% of our participants didn't know Hans-In-Gluck had updated the rules for Halflings in October 2015. Nice change.... Yeeeesssss! I remember that post... Imagine CarcC members grinding their teeth while reading this:

http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=2125.msg29727#msg29727 (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=2125.msg29727#msg29727)

- Santa Claus: And what's the point? Does this affect our quiz?
- Gingerbread Man: Well, this means that any question with Halflings has two different possible answers depending on the rules applied.
- Danisthirty: I can live with that. But I think this is a great opportunity to let everyone know... I would prefer the new rules but if anyone applies the old ones, I won't complain.
- The Grinch: No!!! Zero points for the old rules, zero points!!!! I hate the WICA team because they have their Halflings rules updated, extended and commented. Shame on them!!!... My poor CAR v7.4 hasn't been updated since May 2015. I hate you all! I love zero points! My preciooooooussss!!!
- Danisthirty: Gingerbread Man, don't let him anywhere around the Christmas candies... He gets too excited with sugar.
- Gingerbread Man: It's not that. We are rehearsing The Lord of the Meeples and he is staying in character for too long.
- Danisthirty: What part?
- Snowman: Can't you tell?... Gollum. He loves it.
- Santa Claus: He is a real drama queen. *sigh*
- Gingerbread Man: Yep... Er... My turn.

Question #5: The Gingerbread Man couldn't help giving a try to Carcassonne Maps. In this case, he placed a tile that completes several features on the border. How many points does each player score if using the basic rules?

- Danisthirty: I thought someone was calling my name.
- Snowman: It must be the wind...
- Santa Claus: Whose turn is it? Who placed that CFRF tile?
- The Grinch: My precious scoring meeple... you deserve 50 points.
- Gingerbread Man: Yes, definitively... Too much sugar.

- Danisthirty: Has anyone seen my cup?
- Gingerbread Man: You never had a cup. That was more of a drinking bucket.
- The Grinch: Ha. Finally someone's telling the truth.
- Danisthirty: Guys, that wasn't the question! Where is my cup?
- The Grinch: Is it possible the cup has disappeared?
- Gingerbread Man: Grinch, did you take the cup to...?
- The Grinch: ts, ts, ts. I am always to blame when something happens here. That's how Christmas starts to be fun.
- Danisthirty: Stop it. My cup!
- Santa Claus: Something I just saw passing by.

- The Grinch: Don't tell me you are insisting on this...
- Snowman: Why not? I love triangles... in traffic signs covered in snow, in window panes covered in snow, in pizza slices...
- The Grinch: Yeah, covered in snow too, right?  ???
- Snowman: Nope, in doritos...
- The Grinch: Er...  :o  ... OK, whatever, I'm not an expert in snowman nutrition,...
- The Grinch: (in a low voice) Note to self: sleeve Carcassonne tiles ASAP.

Question #6: The Snowman is helping Red and Green to score their cities. How many points do they score?

- Santa Claus: He won't. Let's search the camp.
- Grinch: What's so special that the thieves took care about your cup?
- Danisthirty: May be, it's because that cup was made with love and nobody loves thieves.
- Grinch: Love, Christmas... hogwash
- Santa Claus: Stop talking! Let's go.

- DrMeeple: (storming in) What’s going on here? I think the C2 epidemic is spreading all over the Carcassonne’s world. Santa Claus, please don't distribute so much enthusiasm in the C2 version, and Grinch help me finish with the C2 version.
- Meepledrone: Well, I used the tiles I had at hand for the pictures. The Grinch was gnawing on my C1 collection... If you want to see the pictures showing bite marks all over the tiles, be my guest!
- The Grinch: C1 greens are sooooooo yummyyyy!!! Give me that 10th Anniversary scoreboard, will you?  >:D
- DrMeeple: Well,... Er... It seems I was barking at the wrong tree.
- Santa Claus: You bet...

- The Grinch: Well... YES!!!...  But I've also been scheming to drive all participants nuts with my first question...
- Fir Tree: (an owl hoots) ...
- The Grinch: Don't give me that look... It is my honor what is at stake here  >:D

Question #9: The Grinch also wants to test you... He doesn't like easy, so be ready for anything. How may points do Red and Yellow get at the end of this game?

- DrMeeple: After the last question by the Grinch, I think we deserve a bit of relax, right?
- Oldbonz: Oui, ma tête va exploser...
- Wolnic: Well, the scoring of that barn was a bit tricky...
- Meepledrone: Can't see why

- Snowman: Nope. I'm impatient.
- Fir Tree: (the wind passes) ...  >:(
- Snowman: I know you love documentaries on pruning, can't you pause it for a minute? It won't take longer than that...
- Santa Claus: Come on, you are going to miss it.
- Danisthirty: Shhhhh! We are watching something important here.
- The Grinch: Ah yes... Now comes the part about the fire.... Yes  >:D
- Fir Tree: (a squirrel runs along a branch) ... :o
- Gingerbread Man: Oh no! No more spoilers, PLEASE!  >:(

- Santa Claus: I this one is going to be fun.
- Danisthirty: Are you sure?
- Gingerbread Man: I agree... Everyone loves castles.
- Danisthirty: If you say so... There was a lot of discussion about castle scoring in the forum this year...
- Santa Claus: Because they are fun.
- Danisthirty: OK. I give up.
- Gingerbread Man:I'm impatient to see what you prepared, Santa.
- Santa Claus: Check this out!

Question #12: If you love castles, this is the right time to prove it to Santa Claus. After completing the city, what will be the scoring for each player? Think carefully!

- Danisthirty: Well. Here we go again.
- The Grinch: And you supposed to post a challenge?
- Danisthirty: Yes. Any comments?
- The Grinch: Well, whatever question you post, it will be like a bit of cake.
- Danisthirty: We know for certain you are not good at assessments... of any kind.
- The Grinch: (mocking Danisthirty voice)... you are not good at assessments... blah blah blah... Nonsense.
- Danisthirty: OK. Let's compare how many participants are right today and in your next question. If I get more right answers than you, I win, otherwise you lose...
- The Grinch: OK, sounds fair.... We've got a deal...
- Danisthirty: Let's talk after your next question is available.  ;)
- The Grinch: Can't wait to see the results!!!  I bet I'll win!!!!

Question #13: Danisthirty is back with another challenge for you. He is completing a city with a watchtower. How many points are Red and Yellow scoring?

- Fir Tree: (whistling in the wind) ...
- The Grinch: (maniacal laugh) Mwahahaha!
- Fir Tree: (a scared squirrel drops a chestnut) ...  :o
- The Grinch: (more maniacal laugh) Mwahahahahaha!
- Snowman: (mumbling) His inner devil is at large again.
- The Grinch: (almost shouting) Nobody will ever be able to tell me how many points will the red meeple score here...
- Snowman: (with a look of indiference) Really?... I would say zero.
- The Grinch: (with an evil look) How can you be so sur....? For the large meeple's sake! Whaattt? ...
- Snowman: Aha!...
- The Grinch: (almost hissing) How could I forget Red Meeple asked me to take the day off?  :o
- Fir Tree: (a twig falls) ...  >:D
- The Grinch: (with a threatening look) Another joke and you will suffer the consequences!!!
- Snowman: This is asking for it... Selfieeeee!!!  ;D ;D ;D

Question #14: If you thought the Grinch was satisfied with his previous visit, you are completely wrong. Can you tell him what is the scoring for the road he just completed?

- Danisthirty: Yesterday it was intense, right?
- Gingerbread Man: Yes... I'm in zen mode today, so anyone can join me with today's bucolic question. How's your bet going on?
- Danisthirty: I'm very confident I'll win but I don't want to jump into conclusions so soon.
- Gingerbread Man: I see.
- The Grinch: (approaching) I told you I always deliver...  >:D
- Danisthirty: (mocking the Grinch's high-pitched voice) ..and there is nothing like a participant's brain melting...
- The Grinch: Will you stop stealing my lines?  :(
- Danisthirty:Whatever... and I haven't forgotten. The game is one and I think I'm winning...  >:D
- The Grinch: No way... you obnoxious meeple.  >:(
- Gingerbread Man: Not a word!... You are behave like mini meeples!
- The Grinch: (pointing with his arm) He started...  :-[
- Danisthirty: ... :-X
- Gingerbread Man: OK, that's much better... Ahem, ahem!... Where was I...?

Question #15: The Gingerbread Man comes to the rescue with an easy one after the Grinch, right? He hopes you already recovered from yesterday's question.

So we have this nice completed road. Can help the Gingerbread Man with the scoring?

- Blue Mini Meeple: Can you tell us who is winning so far?
- Santa Claus: Don't be so impatient... You will know the winner personally in due time.
- Blue Mini Meeple: But you would need the address of all the participants, right?
- Fir Tree: (a twig cracks) ...  :-\
- Santa Claus: Certainly... Ahem! Ahem! Right away...

Important message to the participants

- Santa Claus: If you are participating, please send Meepledrone a PM with your full address so he can post the prize to the winner and a small something to the rest of the participants.
- Fir Tree: (a gentle breeze passes) ...
- Santa Claus: It wasn't that difficult, you see?
- Meepledrone: (form afar) I heard you... You are keeping me really busy here  >:(
- Santa Claus: Did you hear anything?
- Fir Tree: (a worm crawls) ...   ;)
- Santa Claus: (to himself) Always complaining...  ::)

- Blue Mini Meeple: So, Mr. Santa, may I claim road?
- Santa Claus: Nope!
- Blue Mini Meeple: What about a monastery?
- Santa Claus: Nope! Get you all back to the box! It's getting late...
- Blue Mini Meeples & Red Mini Meeples: (all together) Ohhhhh!  :-\
- Blue Mini Meeples: That's not fair...  :-[
- Santa Claus: Tell that to Mr. Grinch. Look! He's approaching...
- Blue Mini Meeples: Guys, we'd better get going...  :o

- Snowman: To place or not to place... that is the abbey dilemma!
- Santa Claus: You look pensive tonight...
- Snowman: (continues) It just the stare of the moon... O suspended icicle! O mirror in the sky!
- Santa Claus: (to himself) Anyway, he will be back to normal when he is -20ºC again. He should avoid those spicy tokens for dinner...

Question #16: The Snowman challenges you with a new scenario. Just for fun, he has placed an abbey tile to fill the hole in the city. How many points does each player score?

- Santa Claus: Why C1 abbots love to practice yoga?
- Yellow Meeple: Well, you tell me. I'm just a regular meeple. Maybe C2 abbots playing C1 abbots can tell you why.
- Santa Claus: ... :o
- Yellow Meeple: When this game is finished I will have a long chat with Hans-im-Glück.
- The Grinch: Can we besiege their HQ?
- Santa Claus: Yep, and don't forget to take some Cathars with you...
- The Grinch: Of course, who do you thing you are talking to?
- Yellow Meeple:(whispering to Santa)  He'll never learn, right?
- Santa Claus: ::)

Question #17: Santa Claus needs your help to evaluate this German monastery with a C1 abbot. How many points would Yellow score at the end of the game?

- Danisthirty: Today is my turn! BTW, congrats @Meepledrone for your 900th post.
- Meepledrone: Thanks, I'm working on it!  8)
- Decar: Oooohhhh! I see a lot of my "favourite" things...
- Danisthirty: ...  :o
- Decar: I know you are biting your tongue. Not a word about The Sound of Music...  :(
- Danisthirty: My lips are sealed...  :-X
- Decar: ...  >:(
- Danisthirty: I didn't ask for it.
- Decar: ...  >:(
- Danisthirty: Are you Julie Andrews?
- Decar: ...  >:(
- Danisthirty: Don't look like her...
- Decar: ...  >:(
- Danisthirty: Don't look at me with that grumpy meeple face.  >:D
- Decar: I hope you know the answer to today's question at least.
- Danisthirty: Er...  ??? ...

Question #18: Danisthirty also wanted to pay homage to his dear friend Decar, the author of countless sketches of scenarios with German castles, Halflings and barns, all of them tagged with a recurring question: "How many farms...?

http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=2649.0 (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=2649.0)

So here you are Yellow's barn placed on the intersection of two Halflings and the long side of a German castle. Danisthirty needs your help to score this barn, the field occupied by Blue and the meeples in the City of Leipzig. Will you let him down?

- The Grinch: Yes! Yes! YEEESSS!
- Gingerbread Man: I think you are overreacting.
- The Grinch: YYYYYEEEESSS!
- Gingerbread Man: Is it because this question you are about to post?
- The Grinch: Yes!!!
- Gingerbread Man: (in a condescending tone) If it is just another fashionable barn in a field.
- The Grinch: YES!!!
- Gingerbread Man: Don't tell me you watched Guardians of the Galaxy again yesterday...
- The Grinch: Y*E*S!!!
- Gingerbread Man: With someone?
- Fir Tree: I am Groot!!!
- Gingerbread Man: Oh, geez!... You too? :o ...  I QUIT!
- The Grinch: Y>>E>>S!!!
- Fir Tree: I AM GROOOT!!!

Question #19: Surprise! The Grinch is back... If you thought you could scare him away last time, let me tell you that you got it all wrong. So how many points will get Yellow after the Grinch connects the fields?

- Santa Claus: Hey guys! How is your bet going on?
- Danisthirty: You know I won right?
- The Grinch: That's impossible. My two questions were really tricky. I'm soon proud!  >:D
- Danisthirty: It doesn't matter... Everything is smoke and mirrors?
- The Grinch:Why do you say that?  :(
- Gingerbread Man: Can't you see? He tricked you... He wins no matter the result...
- The Grinch: (recalling the conversation) ...  :o

- Danisthirty: OK. Let's compare how many participants are right today and in your next question. If I get more right answers than you, I win, otherwise you lose...
- The Grinch: OK, sounds fair.... We've got a deal...

- Danisthirty: I tricked the trickster ;D

- Danisthirty: Don't be mad at me...
- The Grinch: (looking away) ...  >:(
- Santa Claus: (continues) Ho Ho ho!!!
- Gingerbread Man: Whatever!... Let's get back to our business...

Question #20: The Gingerbread Man comes back with a new question. How many points will Blue score after completing the monastery? Don't panic! In case of doubt, he wants you to use the basic rules for Little Buildings.

- Fir Tree: (evoking happiness) I am Groot.  ;D
- Snowman: You are right... I will reveal my question right now and we can grab an eggnog.

- Santa Claus: Who doesn't like a nice German castle of a pointy Halfling?
- Decar: ME!!!
- Danisthirty: (whispering to Decar) I think it was a rhetoric question...
- Decar: (whispering back) I don't care... They have hideous rules to begin with, so they spoil such fancy designs...
- Santa Claus: Ahem! Ahem! It was a rhetoric question....
- Danisthirty and Decar: (At the same time) Yes, we know it!
- Santa Claus: Good! Then?
- Decar: Then what?... I just wanted to share my dislike for them. That's all!
- Santa Claus: What about you, Danisthirty?
- Danisthirty: I don't care about expansions as I used to...
- Decar: What do you think of that?
- Santa Claus: That's a good starting point... Well, guys, our Carcassonne therapy session is over...
- Meepledrone:(in a low voice) Now I understand...  :o
- Santa Claus: I have an important announcement to make!

Important message to the participants

- Participants: (faint voices by PM) h...u...r...r...a...y!

- Decar: Uhmmm, tunnels! Let's see what happens!

Question #23: Danisthirty wanted to confer with the Yellow archbishop before Christmas, so here we are. By placing this last tile, the German cathedral will be completed. He wants to test you so please tell him the scoring for Yellow as soon as possible. Will you?

- Gingerbread Man: You may look a tough guy, but you are fluffy on the inside.
- The Grinch: No, I'm not. Fluffy? On the inside I'm GREEN! Like a Green Meeple >:(

- Santa Claus: The Scoring Circus on its Magical Mystery Tour. It has come to Meepletown.
- The Grinch: Yeeeeeees! And they will be performing for us... I got front row tickets for us all.
- Gingerbread Man: You see? You are a great guy after all...
- Danisthirty: I agree...
- The Grinch: (interrupting) Don't call me that... My skin itches... I'm just doing it to show off in front of our dearest quiz participants.
- Fir Tree: I am Groot!  ???
- Danisthirty: (shrugging) Whatever...
- Snowman: Can we stay for the show and then go to the Christmas Party together?
- Gingerbread Man: I don't see why not.
- The Grinch: (rising one eyebrow) So you are inviting me?
- Danisthirty: Quid pro quo, Clarice!  >:D
- The Grinch: How do you know the Fairy's Meeple name?
- Danisthirty: Never mind...  ::)
- The Grinch: (to participants) Are you ready? Hope this question gives a headache so you cannot celebrate anything...
- Gingerbread Man: (to Santa Claus) This is just a phase, right?

Question #24: The Grinch completed the German castle with a circus space tile. So, in this case, you will have to score not only the German castle but also the big top. The token under the big top shows the number 4. The acrobats also want to be scored so the show is over after this.

How many points does each player score?

- Santa Claus:Thank you for participating. Merry Christmas to you all!!!
- The Grinch: Let them alone! They will have to squeeze their brains dry...
- Danisthirty: Coming?

(the Meeple Council leaves. The Grinch stays behind.)

- Meepledrone: Can I come?

Hi all,

I will start posting the answers and the ranking. Remember that:
* The scoring scenarios happen mainly during a game except those indicated as happening after the game (featuring the scoring of a field, a barn or a German Castle, for example.) I've ignored the scoring after the game provided in those cases where only scoring during the game was necessary.
* The figures belonging to the Meeple Council are just a decoration. They don't represent a particular turn or player color. They just indicate the number of expansions featured (tiles or figures) in the scenario.
* I assumed new rules for Halflings but I will also consider valid those answers with old rules.

Before starting with the question of the quiz, I will provide the answer of the sample question.  ;D

Cheers!

Sample Question: How many points does Red score?

(http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=4427.0;attach=12094)

Answer to Sample Question: Red will score 18 points.

The city has 4 tiles, a 4-point bathhouse and it is participated by two German castles:
- City feature points: 4 tiles x 2 points = 8 points
- Bathhouse bonus points: 4 points
- German castles bonus points: 2 castles x 3 points = 6 points
Total points = 18 points (8 points for the city + 4 points for the bathhouse + 6 points for the two German castles.)

Question #1: The Gingerbread Man has completed the road for Blue. How many points does Blue score for the road?

(http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=4427.0;attach=12097)

Answer #1: Blue scores 7 points (4 points for road and 3 points for the German Castle.) The German castle tile is only considered once.
Title: Re: Carcassonne Central: Advent Quiz MMXIX
Post by: Meepledrone on December 29, 2019, 03:14:57 AM
Question #2: The Snowman has completed this crowded city. How many points does each meeple score?

(http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=4427.0;attach=12099)

Answer #2:
* Blue does not score points.
* Red scores 12 points
* Green scores 0 points

The tower is a separate feature from the city so the blue meeple on top is not actually placed in the city with the other meeples.
Red and Green share the city but red meeple is on top of a hill so it has the majority. As a result, only Red scores the city.

Question #3: Santa Claus wants to know how many points Red would score at the end of the game. Can you help him?

(http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=4427.0;attach=12101)

Answer #3: Red will score 6 points.

The road has 6 tiles and an inn. Since it is incomplete, the road would score 0 points at the end of the game. However, the Mage on the road gives you a 6-point bonus (6 tiles x 1 point each.) Don't get misled by the tile with the bridge; the tile can only be counted once.
Title: Re: Carcassonne Central: Advent Quiz MMXIX
Post by: Meepledrone on December 29, 2019, 03:28:16 AM
Question #4: Danisthirty is enjoying his Christmas tea while closing this road. How many points does Red score?

(http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=4427.0;attach=12103)

Answer #4: There are two possible solutions here depending on the rules for Halflings:
* C1 rules (updated version in 10/2015): 2 triangle tiles in a square space = 2 tiles
* C2 rules: 2 triangle tiles in a square space = 1 tile

It seems not everybody knew about this post where HiG clarified and updated the rules for Halflings for C1:

http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=2125.msg29727#msg29727 (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=2125.msg29727#msg29727)

But later, HiG provided clarifications with additional changes for C2 (overriding the latest rules for C1 and returning to the original ones from 2014):

https://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=5021.msg74239#msg74239 (https://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=5021.msg74239#msg74239)

So we will consider both rules versions valid.

C1 Halfling rules

Red scores 23 points (9 tiles x 2 points for the inn and 5 points for the bathhouse)

The road has 9 tiles including 2 Halfling tiles, which are counted separately. Red scores 2 points per tile as the road contains one inn. So the scoring is as follows:
- 18 points for the road (9 tiles x 2 points per tile)
- 5 points for the bathhouse

C2 Halfling rules

Red scores 21 points (8 tiles x 2 points for the inn and 5 points for the bathhouse)

The road has 8 tiles including 2 Halfling tiles in the same square space that count as one tile. Red scores 2 points per tile as the road contains one inn. So the scoring is as follows:
- 16 points for the road (8 tiles x 2 points per tile)
- 5 points for the bathhouse

EDIT: Updated to cover rules updates from 2021:
* The C1 rules reflect the latest Halflings rules according to the clarifications from 10/2015.
* The C2 rules were clarified in 1/2021 returning to the original intent of the ones provided in 2014.

Question #5: The Gingerbread Man couldn't help giving a try to Carcassonne Maps. In this case, he placed a tile that completes several features on the border. How many points does each player score if using the basic rules?

(http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=4427.0;attach=12105)

Answer #5:
- Red scores 4 points for the monastery (4 tiles x 1 point per tile)
- Yellow scores 7 points for the road (4 road tiles x 1 point each + 1 road segment abroad x 1 point + 2 points for the coat of arms.) Note how the pre-printed road segment abroad with the coat of arms is considered.
- Blue scores 6 points for the city (1 tile x 1 segment + 1 city segments x 2 points + 1 coat of arms x 2 points.) Note how the pre-printed city segment abroad with the coat of arms is considered.

Note monastery scoring does not consider:
- Pre-printed city segments unless they are full pre-printed tiles.
- Pre-printed road segments on the border.

Question #6: The Snowman is helping Red and Green to score their cities. How many points do they score?

(http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=4427.0;attach=12107)

Answer #6:

So we will consider both rules versions valid, although I personally prefer the new ones that make more sense to me: every tile you place counts as 1 tile no matter it is a Halfling tile or a double-sized tile (German castle.)

C1 Halfling rules

- Red scores 10 points (4 tiles x 2 points each + 1 coat of arms x 2 points)
- Green scores 9 points (4 tiles x 2 points each + 1 point for the Little Building)

The Little Building only affects the Halfling tile it is placed on. It does not affect the neighbouring Halfing tile sharing the same square space.

C2 Halfling rules

- Red scores 9 points (3 tiles x 2 points each + 1 coat of arms x 2 points + 1 point for the Little Building) where one of the city tiles contains 2 Halflings.
- Green scores 9 points (4 tiles x 2 points each + 1 point for the Little Building)

The Little Building affects both Halflings as they are considered one single tile together. It affects the scoring of both cities.

Edit: Updated to reflect latest rules for C2.

Question #7: Santa Claus wanted to help these meeples lost in the labyrinth. How many points do they score if using the Labyrinth advanced variant rules? Don't forget to raise the tolls too.

(http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=4427.0;attach=12113)

Answer #7:
 * Green scores: 19 points (11 points for the road and 8 points for the meeples on the road network (4 meeples x 2 points each) )
 * Yellow scores 0 points
 * Blue scores 0 points
 * Red scores the 12 points for the tollhouse, as follows:
   - 2 traveller groups x 3 points = 6 points
   - 2 sheds x 1 point = 2 points
   - 2 gardens x 1 point = 2 points
   - 1 farmhouses x 1 point = 1 point
   - 1 highwaymen group x 1 point = 1 point

The road network is shared by Green, Red, Yellow and Blue but Green's meeple is on a hill. As a consequence the tie is broken and Green has the majority. Therefore, Green is the only player scoring the road network and getting the points from the meeples in the labyrinth.

Question #8: We all know Danisthirty is a sophisticated guy. So he put together this scenario for you so you can tell him how many points Red and Yellow will score after completing the road. Good luck!

(http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=4427.0;attach=12115)

Answer #8: Red and Yellow score 12 points each.

The road has 12 tiles (don't be fooled by the printed and the wooden bridges.) As the road has a inn, each tile gets 2 points. But if you thought the players would get 24 points = 12 tiles x 2 points per tile, you are completely wrong. The witch on the road halves the points and both Red and Yellow will score 12 points each. In the end, much ado about nothing.

Question #9: The Grinch also wants to test you... He doesn't like easy, so be ready for anything. How may points do Red and Yellow get at the end of this game?

(http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=4427.0;attach=12117)

Answer #9:
* Red scores 0 points for the incomplete castle.
* Yellow scores 21 points for the barn.

The  field with the barn contains the following:
* 1 completed besieged city (the city top right has a Besiegers tile)
* 2 completed cities (the city with the bridge touches the field with the barn)
* 1 castle
* 1 pigsty (or pig-herd) by the river elbow that is not considered by the barn.

So the scoring of the yellow barn would be 21 points:
* 1 completed besieged city: 8 points (4 points x 2 if besieged)
* 2 completed cities: 8 points (4 points x 2 cities)
* 1 castle: 5 points

Question #10: The Gingerbread Man is back. He just completed a city and wants to know the scoring. Can you help him?

(http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=4427.0;attach=12120)

Answer #10:
* Red scores 15 points
* Green scores 0 points

Red scores 12 points for the city (6 tiles x 2 points + 2 coat of arms x 2 points.) Additionally both Red and Green have a meeple in the Coiners Quarter in Leipzig. Only Red, with a meeple in the city, is entitled to a 3-point bonus for the coats of arms in the city just completed.

The bottomline, Red scores 15 points (12 points for the city and 3 points for the meeple in Leipzig) and Green scores 0 points for the meeple in Leipzig.

Question #11: The Snowman wants to test your skills with a Darmstadt church. What is the scoring resulting from completing this feature?

(http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=4427.0;attach=12122)

Answer #11:
* Red scores 15 points (9 points for the Church itself + 3 points for the vineyard + 3 points for the Darmstadt church bonus).
* Yellow and Blue don't score points.

The Darmstadt church bonus goes to the player with the majority on the church tile and its adjacent tiles. The tie between Red and Yellow (2 meeples each) is broken by the red meeple on the hill. Therefore, Red gets the bonus.

This scenario only includes regular meeples. No large meeples are included.

Question #12: If you love castles, this is the right time to prove it to Santa Claus. After completing the city, what will be the scoring for each player? Think carefully!

(http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=4427.0;attach=12124)

Answer #12:
* Blue scores 13 points for the city and the fairy
* Orange scores 0 points for the city
* Yellow scores 10 points for the city

Blue gets 10 points for the city (4 tiles x 2 points + 1 coat of arms x 2 points.) As Blue's meeple is next to the fairy, Blue gets 3 additional points for the fairy scoring bonus as well on completion of the city.

The fief of the two castles overlap the completed city so the castles are also scored. Each castle is elegible for the 10 points of the city scored by Blue:
* Orange scores 0 points since the mayor on a castle cannot score any points due to the lack of coats of arms in the castle.
* Yellow scores 10 points for the city. It cannot score the 3-point bonus as they are associated to the meeple, not to the city.

Question #13: Danisthirty is back with another challenge for you. He is completing a city with a watchtower. How many points are Red and Yellow scoring?

(http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=4427.0;attach=12126)

Answer #13:

So we will consider both rules versions valid, although I personally prefer the new ones that make more sense to me: every tile you place counts as 1 tile no matter it is a Halfling tile or a double-sized tile (German castle).

C1 Halfling rules

* Red scores 7 points for the watchtower.
* Yellow scores 8 points for the city

Red's meeple is placed on the watchtower tile and get the bonus: 1 point per tile with at least one road segment. After checking the watchtower tile and the tiles in the eight adjacent spaces, we find 7 tiles with roads segments, including two Halflings and one German castle tile. So the watchtower bonus is 7 points (7 tiles x 1 points per tile.)

On the other hand, Yellow's meeple placed on the hill breaks the tie for the majority so only Yellow scores the city (8 points = 3 tiles x 2 points + 1 coat of arms x 2 points.)

C2 Halfling rules

* Red scores 6 points for the watchtower.
* Yellow scores 8 points for the city

Red's meeple is placed on the watchtower tile and get the bonus: 1 point per tile with at least one road segment. After checking the watchtower tile and the tiles in the eight adjacent spaces, we find 6 tiles with roads segments, considering the two Halflings as one tile, and one German castle tile. So the watchtower bonus is 6 points (6 tiles x 1 points per tile.)

On the other hand, Yellow's meeple placed on the hill breaks the tie for the majority so only Yellow scores the city (8 points = 3 tiles x 2 points + 1 coat of arms x 2 points.)

Question #14: If you thought the Grinch was satisfied with his previous visit, you are completely wrong. Can you tell him what is the scoring for the road he just completed?

(http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=4427.0;attach=12128)

Answer #14:

So we will consider both rules versions valid, although I personally prefer the new ones that make more sense to me: every tile you place counts as 1 tile no matter it is a Halfling tile or a double-sized tile (German castle.)

C1 Halfling rules

* Blue scores 20 points
* Yellow scores 31 points

The road has 11 tiles:
* The RRRR tile with two curves is only counted once
* Two Halfling tiles are counted individually
* The German cathedral is counted as usual as there are not loops back to the tile.

The road also has a inn, the witch and a German castle.

The orden of evaluation for the road would be:
1. Core feature scoring provided by the feature itself (1 point per tile), the inn (1 additional point per tile) and the German cathedral (1 additional point per tile). This means 3 points per tile in all. The core feature scoring is 33 points (11 tiles x 3 points per tile)
2. Next, the witch modifier is applied next, so the road without bonuses would score 33 points halved, that is, 17 points (33 points /2 rounded up)
3. Finally, we apply the German castle bonus, so the road would score 20 points (17 points + 3 points for the German cathedral.)
Expressed with a formula, the road scores RoundUp(11 x 3 / 2) + 3 = 17 + 3 = 20 points.

Blue and Yellow score the road, that is, 20 points. Additionally, Yellow's meeple in the Wainwrights quarter in Leipzig gets a bonus equivalent to 1 points per road tile. So Yellow gets 11 additional points.

The bottomline: Blue scores 20 points and Yellow scores 31 points (20 points for the road and 11 points for meeple in Leipzig)

C2 Halfling rules

* Blue scores 18 points
* Yellow scores 28 points

The road has 10 tiles:
* The RRRR tile with two curves is only counted once
* Two Halfling tiles are counted as one tile together
* The German cathedral is counted as usual as there are not loops back to the tile.

The road also has a inn, the witch and a German castle.

The orden of evaluation for the road would be:
1. Core feature scoring provided by the feature itself (1 point per tile), the inn (1 additional point per tile) and the German cathedral (1 additional point per tile). This means 3 points per tile in all. The core feature scoring is 30 points (10 tiles x 3 points per tile)
2. Next, the witch modifier is applied next, so the road without bonuses would score 33 points halved, that is, 15 points (30 points /2 rounded up)
3. Finally, we apply the German cathedral bonus, so the road would score 28 points (15 points + 3 points for the German cathedral.)
Expressed with a formula, the road scores RoundUp(10 x 3 / 2) + 3 = 15 + 3 = 18 points.

Blue and Yellow score the road, that is, 18 points. Additionally, Yellow's meeple in the Wainwrights quarter in Leipzig gets a bonus equivalent to 1 points per road tile. So Yellow gets 10 additional points.

The bottomline: Blue scores 18 points and Yellow scores 28 points (18 points for the road and 10 points for the meeple in Leipzig.)

Question #15: The Gingerbread Man comes to the rescue with an easy one after the Grinch, right? He hopes you already recovered from yesterday's question.

So we have this nice completed road. Can help the Gingerbread Man with the scoring?

(http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=4427.0;attach=12136)

Answer #15:
* Red scores 4 points
* Yellow scores 4 points

Red scores the road as usual, that is, 4 points (4 tiles x 1 point per tile.)

On the other hand, the completed road surrounding the field with Yellow's shepherd triggers the scoring of its flock automatically (action Guide Flock to Stable). Yellow scores 4 points (4 sheep x 1 point.)

After scoring the flock, the shepherd is returned to its owner and the sheep tokens are put back into the bag.

Question #16: The Snowman challenges you with a new scenario. Just for fun, he has placed an abbey tile to fill the hole in the city. How many points does each player score?

(http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=4427.0;attach=12140)

Answer #16:
* Yellow scores 2 points
* Red scores 18 points
* Green does not score, the abbey is incomplete.

The abbey tile fills the gap and creates 4 separate cities, two of which are occupied and have to be scored. The abbey is a different feature than the city so it is not scored as part of it. The scoring is as follows:
* Yellow scores 2 points for the 1-segment city (1 tile x 2 points)
* Red scores 18 points for the city with the cathedral (5 tiles x 3 points + 1 coat of arms x 3 points.)

Scoring 13-December

Is that scoring correct?
Following the rules you can‘t place a meeple on watchtower. For me the red meeple is placed in the city and earns 8 points for the city and 7 points for the streets (watchtower scoring) . In total 15 points for red and 8 points for yellow or did I miss something?

Best

Hi Murphy013,

You cannot place meeples on Watchtowers but on city segments or road segments next to them.

When a feature (city or road) with watchtowers is completed, those meeples on segments on the watchtower tiles, if any, will score watchtowers bonuses. Then the feature will be scored as usual.

Cheers!

Question #17: Santa Claus needs your help to evaluate this German monastery with a C1 abbot. How many points would Yellow score at the end of the game?

(http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=4427.0;attach=12142)

Answer #17:

So we will consider both rules versions valid, although I personally prefer the new ones that make more sense to me: every tile you place counts as 1 tile no matter it is a Halfling tile or a double-sized tile (German castle).

C1 Halfling and double-sized tile rules

Yellow scores 9 points.

Yellow would score 1 point for the German monastery tile and 1 additional point per tile in the columns and rows spanning from that tile until a empty space is found. Note that:
* Halfling tiles are counted individually.
* Triangular gaps are not considered as an empty space as there is a neighbouring Halfling tile.
* Double-sized tiles are counted as one tile (in this case we have German castle tiles.)

Bearing all this in mind, the German monastery scores 9 points as follows:
* German monastery tile: 1 point
* Column above: 2 points (2 tiles x 1 point), including one German castle
* Column below: 3 points (3 tiles x 1 point), including two Halflings in one square space
* Row to the left: 1 point (1 tile x 1 point), including one Halfling ocupying one square space. Note that the square space ends the row.
* Row to the right: 2 points (2 tiles x 1 point), including one Halfling ocupying one square space and a German castle.

C2 Halfling and double-sized tile rules

Yellow scores 9 points.

Yellow would score 1 point for the German monastery tile and 1 additional point per tile in the columns and rows spanning from that tile until a empty space is found. Note that:
* Two Halfling tiles are counted as one tile if placed on the same square , that is, as one occupied space.
* Triangular gaps are not considered as an empty space as there is a neighbouring Halfling tile.
* Double-sized tiles are counted as two spaces tile (in this case we have German castle tiles).

Bearing all this in mind, the German monastery scores 9 points as follows:
* German monastery tile: 1 point
* Column above: 2 points (2 spaces x 1 point), including one German castle
* Column below: 2 points (2 spaces x 1 point), including two Halflings in one square space considered as one tile together.
* Row to the left: 1 point (1 space x 1 point), including one Halfling ocupying one square space. Note that the square space ends the row.
* Row to the right: 3 points (3 spaces x 1 point), including one Halfling ocupying one square space and a German castle (two occupied spaces).

(http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=4427.0;attach=12144)

Answer #18 (updated):
* Blue scores 6 points
* Yellow scores 8 points
* Red scores 0 points

Blue's meeple occupies a field with 2 completed cities, including Leipzig. Thus Blue scores 6 points for the field (2 cities x 3 points.)

Yellow's barn occupies a field with 2 completed cities, including Leipzig. Thus Yellow scores 8 points for the field (2 cities x 4 points). Although Yellow has a meeple in the Tanners Quarter in Leipzig, barns do not benefit from this bonus, so Yellow does not get any bonus points for the shed in the field with the barn.

Red has a meeple in the Tanners Quarter in the city of Leipzig but no farmers. As a result, Red gets no points.

No C1 cottages in the fields are considered. The house rule would affect only those standalone cottages not located at the end of a road.

Updated on April 7th, 2020

To my dismay, I realized that the Tanners Quarter bonus does not affect barns but only farmers. The answer to this question was updated. As a consequence, the scoring for this question would change, but the winner of the quiz stays the same. Sorry for any inconvenience.

Important notice from 1/2021: The clarifications from 1/2021 stated that the barn position in this example is no longer valid in C2.

Question #19: Surprise! The Grinch is back... If you thought you could scare him away last time, let me tell you that you got it all wrong. So how many points will get Yellow after the Grinch connects the fields?

(http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=4427.0;attach=12146)

Answer #19: Yellow scores 8 points.

The tile just placed connected two separate fields. The resulting field is occupied by several Yellow's figures: the barn, a farmer and the pig. The pig seems to be in a separate field but they get connected under the wooden bridge. As a consequence, we have to score the farmer and the pig according to connected-fields-with-barn scenario. The resulting field has:
* 1 besieged city
* 1 castle
* 1 Little Building

The field scores 8 points as follows:
* 1 besieged city: 4 points ( (1 point for the city + 1 point for the pig) x 2 for the siege)
* 1 castle:  3 points (2 points for the castle + 1 point for the pig)
* 1 Little Building: 1 point for the shed.

After the scoring the connected fields, the farmer and the pig will be removed.

Question #20: The Gingerbread Man comes back with a new question. How many points will Blue score after completing the monastery? Don't panic! In case of doubt, he wants you to use the basic rules for Little Buildings.

(http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=4427.0;attach=12149)

Answer #20: Blue scores 11 points.

Blue will score 9 points for the completed monastery and 2 points for the Little Buildings on adjacent tiles (1 point for the shed and 1 point for the tower.) Little Buildings affect the whole tile, so the tower has to be considered even if it seems to be placed on a separate field.

Answer #21:
* Red scores 7 poins
* Yellow scores 7 points

Red scores:
* 2 points for the watchtower (2 points for the coat of arms in the adjacent city under the wooden bridge).
* 5 points for the road including the wooden bridge (5 tiles x 1 point per tile)

Yellow scores:
* 3 points for the monastery (3 points for the monastery adjacent to the watchtower)
* 4 points for the small city (2 tiles x 2 points per tile)

Question #22: Believe or not, by adding a tile, Santa Claus has completed this German castle. Halflings are a bit messy so please help him with the scoring. How many points will get Red with the C1 rules for Halflings?

(http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=4427.0;attach=12153)

Answer #22:

I'm requesting the answer for the new Halfling rules only: every tile you place counts as 1 tile no matter it is a Halfling tile or a double-sized tile (German castle).

C1 Halfling rules (requested answer)

Red scores 15 points.

The German castle is surrounded by 4 normal tiles and 9 Halflings. So Red will get 15 points (2 points for the German castle tile + 13 tiles x 1 point per tile.)

Note that a square space is considered full if it contains one or two Halfling tiles. Triangular gaps are ignored for this matter.

C2 Halfling rules (not accepted in this case)

Red scores 12 points.

The German castle is surrounded by 10 spaces occupied by normal tiles, 1 Halfling tile or 2 Halflings tiles sharing the same space.. So Red will get 12 points (2 points for the German castle tile + 10 tiles x 1 point per tile.)

Note that a square space is considered full if it contains one or two Halfling tiles. Triangular gaps are ignored for this matter.

Update on April 7th, 2020

This question was answered according to the rules in force in December 2019, based on the clarifications from 10/2015.

With the release of C2 Halflings, the rules for scoring monasteries have been updated back the the old rules from 2014. As a side effect, the scoring of German castles should follow suit. Bearing this in mind, the new new rules of 2020 would dictate that a completed German castle would score 12 points no matter the number surrounding it.

The response according to the rules from 04/2020 is as follows:

Halfling rules from 2020 (not in force during the quiz)

Red scores 12 points.

The German castle is surrounded by 10 spaces occupied by normal tiles, 1 Halfling tile or 2 Halflings tiles sharing the same space. So Red will get 12 points (2 points for the German castle tile + 10 tiles x 1 point per occupied space).

Note that a square space is considered occupied if it contains one or two Halfling tiles. Triangular gaps are ignored for this matter.

Edit: Updated to match the latest clarifications for C2.

Question #23: Danisthirty wanted to confer with the Yellow archbishop before Christmas, so here we are. By placing this last tile, the German cathedral will be completed. He wants to test you so please tell him the scoring for Yellow as soon as possible. Will you?

(http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=4427.0;attach=12155)

Answer #23: Yellow scores 26 points

The road network connected to the German cathedral contains a roundabout and several tunnels that connect the three road segments on the German cathedral. Analyzing the road network, we have to take into account the following elements:
- 7 road tiles
- 3 tunnel tiles that are considered only once for the road network
- 3 road segments on the German Cathedral counted independently
- 1 inn, so each tile and road segment on the German cathedral gets 2 points

So Yellow will score 26 points (10 tiles x 2 points + 3 road segments x 2 points)

Question #24: The Grinch completed the German castle with a circus space tile. So, in this case, you will have to score not only the German castle but also the big top. The token under the big top shows the number 4. The acrobats also want to be scored so the show is over after this.

How many points does each player score?

(http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=4427.0;attach=12160)

Answer #24:

Real game situation

Note: This is the correct answer if this scenario would be part of a real game, since figures are removed during scoring. Figure removal affects big top scoring.

* Yellow scores 20 points (28 points before 1/2021)
* Red scores 10 points
* Blue scores 4 points

Here is an explanation of the various layers of scoring taking place in this scenario:

1. Scoring the German castle:

* Yellow scores 15 points (12 points for the German castle + 3 points for the fairy)

2. Scoring the Ringmaster points (not applicable to German castles after clarification from 1/2021)

* Yellow scores 8 points (3 adjacent circus tiles x 2 points + 1 adjacent acrobat space x 2 points)

Action: The ringmaster is removed from the board.

3. Scoring the acrobats

* Red gets 5 points per acrobat (a normal meeple and a phantom), that is 10 points (2 meeples x 5 points)
* Yellow gets 5 points per acrobat (a phantom in this case), that is 5 points (1 meeple x 2 points.)

Action: The acrobats are removed from the board.

4. Scoring the big top

* Blue's farmer gets 4 points for the big top. Note that Yellow's ringmaster is not on the board at this point and the other figures in adjacent tiles cannot get points for the big top: the witch, the fairy, or Blue's pig are not followers so they are not elegible for the big top scoring.

The bottomline (after 1/2021):
* Yellow scores 20 points (15 points for the German castle and the fairy + 0 for the ringmaster bonus + 5 for the acrobat.)
* Red scores 10 points for the acrobats.
* Blue scores 4 points for the big top.

The bottomline (before 1/2021):
* Yellow scores 28 points (15 points for the German castle and the fairy + 8 for the ringmaster bonus + 5 for the acrobat.)
* Red scores 10 points for the acrobats.
* Blue scores 4 points for the big top.

Alternate evaluation not taking into account figure removal during scoring

Note: This is another valid answer for this limited scenario but it would be incorrect in a real game situation. Figure removal affects big top scoring.

* Yellow scores 24 points (32 points before 1/2021)
* Red scores 10 points
* Blue scores 4 points

* Yellow scores 8 points (3 adjacent circus tiles x 2 points + 1 adjacent acrobat space x 2 points)

4. Scoring the big top

* Yellow's ringmaster and Blue's farmer get 4 points each for the big top. Note that other figures in adjacent tiles cannot get points for the big top: the witch, the fairy, or Blue's pig are not followers so they are not elegible for the big top scoring.

The bottomline (after 1/2021):
* Yellow scores 24 points (15 points for the German castle and the fairy + 0 for the ringmaster bonus + 5 for the acrobat + 4 for the big top.)
* Red scores 10 points for the acrobats.
* Blue scores 4 points for the big top.

The bottomline (before 1/2021):
* Yellow scores 32 points (15 points for the German castle and the fairy + 8 for the ringmaster bonus + 5 for the acrobat + 4 for the big top.)
* Red scores 10 points for the acrobats.
* Blue scores 4 points for the big top.

Note: This scenario cannot happen at the end of the game as the Big Top has to move to the a new location with a new animal token underneath. If that tile is the last one in the game, the Big Top should be scored before the field with the blue farmer and the blue pig is scored.

Note 2: After the clarifications from 6/2021, phantoms cannot be acrobats, so this scenario is not completely valid anymore. Moreover, the ringmaster should not provide the ringmaster bonus when placed on the German castle (as per the clarifications from 1/2021), but we keep both scorings for the time being until HiG confirms the rules of the ringmaster bonus. They seem to be under review.

Edit: Included note related to latest clarifications for C2.

Congratulations to Vital Pluymers, the other participants, and to meepledrone for running this so efficiently.

I must admit if I'd taken a little more care, and looked more carefully at the actual tiles and figures in the images, before submitting my answers, I might have got a few more correct - I now see I missed a couple of halfling tiles filling a whole tile space, and know I nearly missed a hill and besiegers tile early on. According to my notes I thought I'd got the last question scored correctly, but maybe just added the numbers up wrongly!

Actually, I'm pleased with 5th, as I don't actually play with most of the expansions included in the questions! The wiki helped quite a bit, though!

Were there any common misconceptions about the scoring in any of the questions, meepledrone?

Congratulations to the winner, it's a truly remarkable score.
Congratulations to Meepledrone for the hard work they did to entertain and amuse us for the holiday season.
Congratulations to all the participants who animated this quiz and made this competition come alive.
As for my own ridiculous result, it can only improve, and as a certain de Coubertin used to say "the main thing is to participate".

Answer #24:
* Yellow scores 32 points
* Red scores 10 points
* Blue scores 4 points

Here is an explanation of the various layers of scoring taking place in this scenario:

1. Scoring the German castle:

* Yellow scores 15 points (12 points for the German castle + 3 points for the fairy)

2. Scoring the Ringmaster points

* Yellow scores 8 points (3 adjacent circus tiles x 2 points + 1 adjacent acrobat space x 2 points)

4. Scoring the big top

* Yellow's ringmaster and Blue's farmer get 4 points each for the big top. Note that other figures in adjacent tiles cannot get points for the big top: the witch, the fairy, or Blue's pig are not followers so they are not elegible for the big top scoring.

The bottomline:
* Yellow scores 32 points (15 points for the German castle and the fairy + 8 for the ringmaster bonus + 5 for the acrobat + 4 for the big top.)
* Red scores 10 points for the acrobats.
* Blue scores 4 points for the big top

Maybe you shouldn't say the last sentence 'The show is over after this' because the score doesn't reflect It.... If it's not over, then it's a little cheater don't you think? emoji code12]

The show would be over for the acrobats: you score them and remove them. It was just a literary license so to speak. The game cannot be finished as the big top has to be moved to the newly placed tile... before the game ends with the final big top scoring before the scoring after the end takes place.

In any case, that's why I didn't take into account any references to the scoring of the blue farmer and the blue pig.

I don't think that this is correct.
Roads leading to a German Cathedral and its road segments are worth three points each when there is an inn next to the road.
So total score should be 39 points.

Actually, I'm pleased with 5th, as I don't actually play with most of the expansions included in the questions! The wiki helped quite a bit, though!

My question here is if the quiz helped you learn a bit about some expansions and you would like to try them in a game.

Were there any common misconceptions about the scoring in any of the questions, meepledrone?

To answer your question, I had a look at the questions with correct answers under 50%.

Some of the mistakes in the answers were caused by lapses in the tongue, so to speak. You can see the participants knew the rules but a calculation error got in the way, or they didn't pay attention to the small details: hills, vineyards, cities connected with a bridge to other fields, cities under siege...

Some other questions reveal some issues with particular concepts or certain expansions:
* Features scored by segments and not by unique tiles (with the exception of German cathedrals): this has affected roads with loops, bridges, tunnels, tiles with several road segments... where the tiles were counted several times by mistake. This affected also questions with cities.
* The barn: some participants had some issues with the scoring a field (with a pig added in the last second!) connected to another one with a barn
* Castles: some participants have issues with what points a castle can get from the feature triggering its scoring.
   - Castles can only get feature-related points.
   - Castles cannot get figure-related points such as the fairy.
   - Mayors on castles score 0 points: the lack of coats of arms renders them useless.
* Hills as majority tie-breakers: not considered by some of the participants in there scoring.
* Big Top points: some participants applied the Big Top points to non-meeple figures.
* Mage & Witch: some participants didn't know how to apply these modifiers or what features could be affected.
   - The Wizard on an incomplete road with inns at the end of a game (The same would happen with an incomplete city with a cathedral.)
   - The Witch on a road when combined with other modifiers and bonus (Markets of Leipzig)
   - The Witch applied to features other than roads or cities (The rules do not consider this)
* German cathedrals: the scoring of the road and the archbishop became an issue for some of the participants.
* Watchtowers: some participants didn't know who gets the watchtower bonus when scoring the feature containing a watchtower.

I hope this satisfies your curiosity.  O0

Yes, many thanks.

By the way, would the result have been any different if just a straight 1 was awarded for a correct answer?

Hi wolnic!

Here you are an exercise comparing the rankings. The left table is the resulting ranking with 1 point for each correct answer, so participants get no extra points for responding early with a right answer. Total time-to-respond is used as a tie-breaker.

The winner doesn't change but the order of some participants vary as no early responses compensate for their errors in other questions.

You stay on the fifth position  8)

Let me know your thoughts.  ;D

Happy New Year!

PS: I didn't think hills were going to be such a source of problems...  ;)

On the other hand I was ready for the controversy around Halflings... That little triangular gate to Carcassonne hell.  :o

Hi Meepledrone - thanks for the excellent set of questions that had me putting WikiCarpedia to good use, it's a pity my powers of observation were not good enough to spot some of the subtleties in the different scenarios.   At least I now know to look out for hills and halflings in future...

Best wishes for 2020

- Danisthirty: Do you think it is a good prize for the winner of the Advent Calendar Quiz 2019?
- The Grinch: (distant voice) Will you please shut up? Some of us need a good sleep to be as mean as possible in the morning!

Question 18: The yellow barn receives only 8 points, because the Tanners quarter applies only for farmers (http://wikicarpedia.com/index.php/The_Markets_of_Leipzig#cite_note-14).

Question 18: The yellow barn receives only 8 points, because the Tanners quarter applies only for farmers (http://wikicarpedia.com/index.php/The_Markets_of_Leipzig#cite_note-14).

Yes, you can see I found out on April 6th 2020 and added that precise clarification to WICA you refer to. Later, on April 7th 2020, I extended the response to question #18 in the quiz explaining this case (scroll to the bottom of the post here):

http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=4427.msg65473#msg65473 (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=4427.msg65473#msg65473)

The winner of the quiz wasn't altered so no harm done.  :o

New Halfling rules

Old Halfling rules

Now Red would score 2 points for the double tile and 1 point for the halflings.

New Halfling rules

Old Halfling rules

Yellow scores 8 points.

Yellow would score 1 point for the German monastery tile and 1 additional point per tile in the columns and rows spanning from that tile until a empty space is found. Note that:
* Two Halfling tiles are counted as one tile if placed on the same square.
* Triangular gaps are not considered as an empty space as there is a neighbouring Halfling tile.
* Double-sized tiles are counted as one tile (in this case we have German castle tiles.)

Bearing all this in mind, the German monastery scores 8 points as follows:
* German monastery tile: 1 point
* Column above: 2 points (2 tiles x 1 point), including one German castle
* Column below: 2 points (2 tiles x 1 point), including two Halflings in one square space considered as one tile together.
* Row to the left: 1 point (1 tile x 1 point), including one Halfling ocupying one square space. Note that the square space ends the row.
* Row to the right: 2 points (2 tiles x 1 point), including one Halfling ocupying one square space and a German castle.

Now it would be 9 points (https://wikicarpedia.com/index.php/Castles_in_Germany#cite_ref-5).

(http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=4427.0;attach=12144)

Answer #18:
* Blue scores 6 points
* Yellow scores 10 points
* Red scores 0 points

Additionally, Yellow has a meeple in the Tanners Quarter in Leipzig, so Yellow will get 2 bonus points (1 farmhouse in the field x 2 points). As a result, Yellow scores 10 points (8 points for the barn + 2 points for the meeple in Leipzig.)

Red has a meeple in the Tanners Quarter in the city of Leipzig but no farmers. As a result, Red gets no points.

No C1 cottages in the fields are considered. The house rule would affect only those standalone cottages not located at the end of a road.

Update on April 7th, 2020

To my dismay, I realized that the Tanners Quarter bonus does not affect barns but only farmers. The answer to this question would be different as shown below. As a consequence, the scoring for this question would change, but the winner of the quiz stays the same. Sorry for any inconvenience.

Answer #18 - updated:
* Blue scores 6 points
* Yellow scores 8 points
* Red scores 0 points

Although Yellow has a meeple in the Tanners Quarter in Leipzig, barns do not benefit from this bonus, so Yellow does not get any bonus points.

Red has a meeple in the Tanners Quarter in the city of Leipzig but no farmers. As a result, Red gets no points.

Invalid barn placement.

* Blue scores 6 points
* Yellow scores 8 points
* Red scores 0 points

Although Yellow has a meeple in the Tanners Quarter in Leipzig, barns do not benefit from this bonus, so Yellow does not get any bonus points.

Red has a meeple in the Tanners Quarter in the city of Leipzig but no farmers. As a result, Red gets no points.
Why the barn should be scored? It is the end of the game?

Answer #18:
* Blue scores 6 points
* Yellow scores 10 points
* Red scores 0 points

Added some notes and rewording to keep up with latest C1/C2 rules for Halflings and double-sized tiles. This affects questions #4, #6, #13, #14, #17 and #22.

New clarifications turned some placements invalid:
* The barn in question #18
* The phantoms as acrobats in question #24.

The ringmaster bonus is not applicable to other features that those in the base game. This cha ge affects question #24. We are waiting for HiG to clarify their final rules (they may extend the ringmaster bonus to all features).

Edit: Updated to reflect latest rules for C2.

Why 1 point for the German castle?

Because until this year, double tiles were counter as 1 tile. Due to patterns used from City of Leipzig. This clarification was made for new double tile in River 20 years Carcassonne edition
Due to this year clarification that double tiles except city of Leipzig are counter as two tiles, this has to be also updated. Because red will get bonus for 1 point for upper part of double tile for one road there and also 1 point for lower part of double tile with two roads.
I suppose, that was the question, right?

This is one open issue I asked HiG some time ago but got no reply yet.

We have several possibilities in this case:
1) The watchtower considers the German castle as one tile and counted once no matter if it occupies one or two adjacent spaces.
2) The watchtower considers the German castle as one tile but it is counted twice if occupying two adjacent spaces.
3) The watchtower considers the German castle like two square tiles considering the features/meeples on its two halves separately --> This can lead to odd cases when onely one half is adjacent to the watchtower when dealing with meeples on farms spanning across the two spaces or placed in the German castle, also when dealing with long roads on Leipzig tiles and the meeples on them. Are long roads counted one or twice? Are meeples on features on features present in both halves counted once or twice?

We are considering here option #1, which seems simpler. Option #2 seems weird since there is no precendent in Carcassonne. Option #3 is very problematic since meeple location in a feature suddenly becomes relevant and there is no precent for this case either.

So in option #1 we do the following mapping:
* One or two Halflings in an adjacent space are considered as one tile.
* A double-sized tile occupying one or two adjacent spaces are considered as one tile.

Any comments?

Hmm. Due to we have clarification by Hig. That road started on first half of double tile of German castle and ended on same tile but on second half is counted as two then we have pattern how to count it, haven't we?
