News and Events / Re: Carcassonne - new Edition - Is that true?
« on: September 26, 2014, 07:19:14 PM »
I just read through Mortiz's post on CarcF. I wasn't able to understand everything, but I think I got 90% of it. In the Big Box thread I said I would never buy a Big Box, but now that I'm thinking more about the new artwork, I would be interested to buy a Big Box version with all new artwork.

I don't think we should be stressing out about things which are not firmly decided yet. However, I do think it's valid for us to express our concerns about the future of our favorite game. Even better would be a collaborative discussion between ourselves and the publishers. I see an opportunity to do some things differently with this new era of Carcassonne than what happened in the past. Maybe this time around, Spielbox won't get exclusive expansions that the other publishers can't sell. Maybe this time around there won't be a Catapult.

As with any work of art, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I like both the old art style as well as the new art style. Of course, my preference is for the old art style because I've been living with it for the past decade, but if the new art style will help the game remain popular for the next generation of gamers, then I'm supportive of it.

As a veteran player with a nearly complete collection, I'm definitely not buying a Big Box (at least not with the original art style). If there's anything in the Big Box that I need, I'd be open to buying the things I'm missing if a certain retailer would be able to make them available to me separately. ;)

I would be very happy if your next redesign would also include separate product pages. This would be helpful for me to promote new products on Facebook when you add them to the catalog.

General / Re: Carcassonne – what is stopping you playing?

Two things keep me from playing:
1. Having people to play with.
2. Having time to play.

General / Re: About Cundco carcassonne ice cube tray

I have the ice cube tray. I stuck a meeple into it and it fits perfectly. I haven't tried putting it in the oven, but silicone is stable from -55 Celsius to +300 Celsius (572 Fahrenheit), so it should be fine. If you're going to try making cookies in it, you'll need to make sugar cookies or shortbread, which don't change size during baking. I'll stick to using the cookie cutters.

Lots of negativity in here...

I think the new artwork is beautiful, but I also think the old artwork is beautiful. It's like trying to decide between pizza and ice cream: I want both.

I saw some of the comments on Facebook, and the replies from Z-Man Games that the new edition is "compatible" with the old edition because the back side of the tiles have the same artwork. That doesn't fit my definition of compatible.

Likewise, I'm not impressed by the addition of a new mini-expansion. Last night I attended a presentation where the keynote speaker gave an example of toothpaste: 50 years ago, Crest made only one type of toothpaste; today Crest has more than 40 unique products (including different sizes, flavors, etc.). Retailers like Walmart are fed up and demanding that they reduce their number of unique offerings or lose their space on the shelf. Turning our attention back to Carcassonne, I'm concerned that all the different versions of the base game may dilute the brand.

But at the end of the day, I'm still a fan and will buy this new edition for my collection. I may not understand the rationale behind their decision, but getting mad about it doesn't help anything.

Anything Else / Re: Buying from Carcassonne Shoppe

There is a bit of a limit to economies of scale for me when buying from Carcassonne Shoppe. This might just be from USA to Canada, but we've found that over 4 pounds the shipping cost skyrockets. When I was working to complete my spin-off collection, Carcatronn weighed everything I needed and we divided it up into three shipments and staggered them over 3 months (to help spread out my costs a bit). The point of my story is this: talk to him about what you want; flat rate shipping is not always the best.

Now with regards to shipping cost in general, when Amazon gives you free shipping, they still have to pay for it. Their shipping costs are very cheap compared to most other companies because they deal in VERY high volumes. The company that I work for has very good rates with a particular courier company for similar reasons. Amazon absorbs the cost of shipping in the profit they make from selling each item. Giving you free shipping encourages you to spend a little more, which increases profits to help cover the additional shipping cost.

Turning our attention back to the Carcassonne Shoppe, his volumes are very small compared to Amazon and his profit margin is also less than other retailers, so he can't afford to give free shipping over a certain amount without raising prices. I'm not saying this to make anybody feel bad, just trying to explain the economics of logistics. My company gives free shipping to some of our customers, but they are spending a lot of money with us and we ship full truck loads so we get good rates.

Too bad that Flash Point got left behind, but with all the expansions it is among the heaviest games in my collection so not entirely surprising.

The Marketplace / Re: WTB Inqury for huge amount of Carcassonne tiles

I wonder if HiG would give you a bulk discount if you bought a full pallet of extra tiles? We buy copier paper by the pallet and save quite a bit compared to buying individual boxes.

The Marketplace / Re: Anyone going to Germany soon?

There's enough threads around here extolling the virtues of plastic storage solutions (I love my Artbin case!), so I won't say anything more on that subject.

I would urge anybody who is longing for the Besiegers expansion and doesn't care about the metal tin to hold on to their money, at least until Essen 2014. The last package I received from Germany contained a copy of this expansion, so I'm feeling optimistic that it will become available later this year when Mueller's 1-year exclusivity deal ends.

I'd like to see these codes added to the next CAR. I can't confirm this, but suspect that the number might somehow correspond to the printing layout, in which case it might be possible to deduce codes for other expansions not included there?

Appears to have been fixed at this time. Yellow and danisthirty have the ability to update the home page, in addition to myself and Gantry.

General / Re: Carcassonne for more than 6 players?
« on: September 02, 2014, 06:27:01 PM »
The ultimate challenge:

71 players. Each player gets one tile (base game only setup). Only difficult part is the farmers but followers could be replaced by a number token each representing a player.  ;D

I know it brings about all sort of adjustments but we gotta get crazy once in a while!

We need to make this happen! If I ever make it to Essen...

Put all the meeple in a bag and players draw from the bag at random (if they don't choose some other action). Meeple are returned to the bag as features are completed. Which color will win? Anything could happen!
