Personally I think that continents are a convenient yet silly way of dividing the world, and New Zealand is a good example of that. The usual definition of the Australian continent includes only the country of Australia as an island-continent. But if you want to include New Zealand and the other Pacific Islands, saying Oceania or even Australasia as the continent name is better. If you ever told a New Zealander that New Zealand was part of Australia, well, you would be looking for your teeth on the ground very shortly thereafter :)

See, when I grew up, we referred to Australia as a continent consisting of Australia (the country) and New Zeeland etc.

But that has now been changed. Instead, it's referred to as Oceania.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oceania (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oceania)

Personally i don't like to say australia as an continent either.. its like calling north america the united states.. in my opinion its Oceania,
although there are many people who even say that it is split in 2 continents:

It is interesting how us Kiwis (New Zealanders) have such a love hate relationship with Aussies. We are very competitive in sport between the two countries.

Geologically, Australia and New Zealand are separate continents. New Zealand is on the southeastern fringe of a mostly sunken continent aptly named Zeelandia. Much more of it used to be above the surface.

On the other side You're both very proud of your ANZAC history.
