In the beginning there was "The Concept".
Next there was the cunning decision to use the magic number "72". One can print in batches of 12 and it is a number ideal for 2, 3, 4 but not 5 [ we'll fix that later ] players.
Then there was the "Play Testing" and "The Rules" and betwixt and between there was the "Cock-up". For someone maketh the decision that there must be a tile on the table at the commencement of proceedings. This then leaves 71 playable tiles which is devisable by 'not-a-lot'.
Thus the question to follow all the not-getting-to-the-point-quickly-enough is this.........
What design should the 'other' tile, the missing 73rd tile have been?
I can't offer a Spiel de Jahres trophy, but there are a few things that I have from which a prize can be chosen and posted to the forumee who posteth the tile design that I agree is the one that I would have included back in the day.
(Obviously the rule to have a tile on the table could've been over-ruled - but that is a completely different discussion IMHO)
So, what sayeth the populous of Carcassonne Central?

I would go with the cfrf tile (No. EJ in the Inns & Cathedrals). It's got all types of edge, just like the official starting tile. And it's symmetrical! But it's not one of the basic game tiles.
Sidetrack a bit, now I might try starting a game with this one. Thanks for inspiring the idea.

A tough one. Maybe a joker tile like cfrf as suggested but with a cloister in the middle. The forest would be one area and the road would lead to the cloister.

I really don't know which one, may be this one. ;D ;D ;D ;D

I'm sure I shared my thoughts about this somewhere else...but hopefully I don't contradict myself. I think one additional CRFR tile just like the starter tile would be the most suitable. But sometimes I wonder if another CCRR splitter would make for interesting glomming and farming opportunities.

What about 'Le vendeur d'oignons'

A simple tile with a bit of everything and a reason to go to Carcassonne in the first place.

I would go with this one, from I&C:

In the base game, there is no tile that splits cities once you have it surrounded on 3 sides which can be annoying if trying to keep someone out of your city!
It's also a fun tile to farm. :D

This reminds me of a thread I started a while ago: Carcassonne is missing a tile? (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=720.msg7741#msg7741)
Perhaps it's better just to keep the 72 tiles that already exist as part of the basic game but abolish the idea of a starting tile. The starting player draws the first tile out of the bag or whatever tile dispensing mechanism you're using, places it as a normal tile and may claim something on it as they wish. Then play continues in the normal way and all 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 players get to place the same number of tiles.
If another tile had to be included I'd suggest a 3 or 4-way city splitter such as the ones included in I & C, or perhaps an rrrf (or rrrr) where at least 2 of the 3 (or 4) road endings are connected would be most interesting.
