Ticket to Ride UK and PA
« on: February 26, 2016, 12:51:09 PM »
Ticket to Ride is probably the game we play the most.  We have the USA, Europe, India + Switzerland, and now the UK and Pennsylvania map.

I have to say this expansion is both awesome and terrible.

The UK map has a technology aspect of it that makes the locomotives too important.  In most ticket to ride games, people pull cards from the visible choices.  That never happens in UK because everyone is pulling from the deck hoping for more locomotives.  Also, the technologies just weight the game down.  It is really no fun IMHO.  That being said, the map is BEAUTIFUL.  It is almost as pretty as India.

The Pennsylvania map is UGLY.  They forgot the legend and forgot to put in a card for the person who scored the most tickets.  The stock gimmick in this map is FANTASTIC.  My son's strategy is to forgo destinations and go after stocks.  My wife goes after a ton of destination and doesn't concentrate on stocks too much.  I am somewhere in between.  All 3 of us have won at different times with very different strategies.   We play this one the most with India being our second favorite.

Anyone else give it a go?

The UK/PA map was an instant buy for me because my home town of Towanda is on the map.  I was amazed because it's a tiny town, but all of them in that area are small, so there wasn't much to choose from.
Flee the fleas.

I've only played Ticket to Ride a handful of times and it didn't really grab me. I'd definitely like to play it again, but I preferred it with more than 2 players and most of the time games I play are between just Mrs_danisthirty and I. We tend to play either co-ops or games that are specifically meant for 2 players (such as 7-Wonders: Duel) most of the time, but when the kids are old enough I'm sure we'll be playing this a bit more.

Have played it mostly with three, occasional with four, never with two. But in our games of three, we quite often used the "Switzerland" map, witch is quite tight, and therefore designated to only two or three. You might give this one a try with your wife.

The Nordic Countries set is made for 2-3 players as well.

One of my friends calls Nordic Countries "Ticket to Divorce".

Brutal game. Access to the top of the board is only via three routes, including the massive 9-train route. I played with a complete noobie once and he rather slyly created a route right through the middle of the board, completing small routes along all three branches to completely cut me off from the north. Something like three of my tickets were all north-south tickets and he pretty much killed my game. I ended up drawing tickets in the hope that I could find some smaller southern tickets just to cancel out my failure in the north, but it was all for naught. I think he won by a landslide, or near enough.
