Title: Including all three sets of cloisters?
Post by: ny1050220 on September 26, 2017, 03:00:47 PM
I understand that the official ruling is that the German cloisters replace the regular ones in the base game, and the same for the Dutch and Belgian ones. And I guess this idea will get frowned upon, but I still want to bring it up, as this is what we do with the physical game anyway. Can we have the option of including all these cloisters in JCZ? I remember there were discussions on the forum about the (low) number of cloisters when many other expansion are added.

The expansions try (poorly) to include enough cloisters to keep the general balance of 1 cloister in 12 tiles that the base game establishes. The problem with playing with more than this balance is that players will likely run out of meeples at some point because so many are trapped on cloisters. And cloister trapping may also become a lot bigger strategy. Remember that if you allow players to also play with the German Monasteries rules, then those meeples may stay on the monasteries for the rest of the game. I'd say keep the original balance and just replace the cloisters. I've played with German and Benelux alongside the original cloisters and it was way too many cloisters/monasteries.

I'm sorry NY1050220 - we're going to have to send the Carcassonne Police force around to stop your shenanigans  C:-) C:-) C:-)

I'm joking of course, I imagine the only issue you would have is there would be too many locations where your meeple may be trapped, or have to remain until the end of the game to score.  I suspect an additional meeple, or an abbot would balance that out; or maybe just adding another expansion with meeples, like Inns and Cathedrals or Mange Frei, would help.

Yah, I totally understand the concerns expressed by y'all.
In practice, we use the fffr tile with a cloister to connect two farms far more often than try to score the cloister.

With new art the Abbot is useful when there are more than the usual ratio of monasteries especially as he cannot be trapped. We also include the phantom are score on a laptop which frees up the meeple that would be allocated to the score track.
