Title: Carcassonne Minis League: Wizards
Post by: MrNumbers on June 15, 2017, 10:49:05 AM
Wizards:

If you are new to the competitions, please, carefully read the following tournament notes/guidance/rules before continuing.
If you already participated in some Carcassonne Central competitions before, the following rules are pretty much the same as always, except final stage (points 9-10). Let's try this format this time and see how it goes.

1. Players have already been divided into three different groups (Fliers, Goldminers, Wizards). Each player will play one game of Carcassonne against every other player in their group individually via a series of 2-player/ head-to-head games. The winner of each game will be awarded two league points whereas the loser gets nothing. If the game is tied, both players receive one league point each.

2. Players in each group will be ranked according to the number of league points they have scored. PD (Points Differential) will be used as an initial tie-breaker if there is no clear winner based on league points alone, and total combined score (from all games) will be used as a second tie-breaker if necessary. Your PD is calculated by taking the total number of points scored by you and subtracting the total number of points scored against you (combined across all games).

3. Games will be played online through the latest stable version of JCloisterZone (currently 3.4.3). Please ensure you have downloaded this and are familiar with its controls and features before the competition begins. It is also recommended that you have played at least one practice game against a live opponent in order to identify and resolve any technical problems before your first game.

4. JCloisterZone includes a number of artificial aids such as farm hints, projected scores and even tile-counting assistance. We all are busy people, and time is valuable for all of us. Many players spend decent amount of time anyway to count points for farms and uncompleted features, so with the purpose of speeding up our games, I allow to use "projected scores" feature. Other aids are still prohibited. I can't stop you from using them anyway, and won't know if you do, but I do urge you to play as fair as possible. I know it's a competition and we all want to win, but let's keep it fair, fun and friendly as far as possible...

5. Each game will include the basic tiles plus four expansions: Flier, Goldmines, Mage & Witch and Crop Circles. This is 102 tiles including the start tile, so 101 tile will be shuffled and randomly drawn for you and your opponent in turn. The starting player should be chosen at random through JCZ by selecting the "Randomize seating order" checkbox on the pre-game screen.

6. If any unexpected behaviour occurs during your game (for example if you think you have discovered a bug within JCloisterZone which may have altered the course of the game for you), please consult with your opponent and the CAR/ anyone else who happens to be in the chat room at the time to determine whether it appears to be a genuine bug. If it is, please save your game and post details of the bug along with anything else relating to how it came about on the forums. If however, you and your opponent are both happy to continue with your game despite the bug then feel free to do so, but don’t forget to mention the bug afterwards no matter how minor it may have seemed!

7. Please post a screenshot of your game, including final scores and score breakdown, back to your group thread as soon as your game is complete. It's always interesting to hear what happened during the game too, so please feel free to post any thoughts/ comments at the same time if you wish. If you're not sure how to capture/ post screenshots, please ask on the forums and either myself or someone else will explain how to do this (we're a friendly bunch!)

8. It is the players responsibility to liaise with their fellow group-members in order to find a mutually convenient time to play their game. This is expected to be done predominantly through Private Messages but feel free to use your group thread (here) too if this is easier. Please do keep any appointments you make, or at least give your opponent as much notice as possible if something occurs which prevents you from playing at the agreed time (more on the "Unwritten Rules" is available here (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=2700)).

9. Each of the 3 initial groups contains 6 players so the first stage of the competition will end when every player (all 18 of us) has played 5 games. At this point, the pool will split again into 3 groups of 6 depending on finishing position in the initial groups. So, the 2 top-ranked players from groups will form group F1, those who came 3rd and 4th in each group will form group F2, and 5th and 6th - group F3.

10. Play in groups F1 to F3 will constitute the second stage of the competition which will run in the same way as the first. League points, PD and total score will be reset at this point (but remembered for overall stats) so that no single player in any group has any kind of advantage. Finishing positions in groups at the second stage will determine overall rank: 1st=F1-1, 2nd=F1-2, 3rd=F1-3, 4th=F1-4, 5th=F1-5, ..., 15th=F3-3, 16th=F3-4, 17th=F3-5, 18th=F3-6.

Finally, you may find the following links helpful:

Good luck everyone! ;) :(y)

First game in the Wizards group (possibly in the league too!)

Will write a few words tomorrow... bit late now.

  :yellow-meeple: Jéré       175
  :black1-meeple: WhatIf   141

  :yellow-meeple: Jéré            158
  :green-meeple: Adrornalin   143

The kind of game that make you sweat...  >:( :o :))  Adror is a very good player and proved it once again: none of his guys got trapped despite me trying... Felt a bit that luck wasn't on my side during the game regarding the draw of Mage/Witch (got only 2 out of 8 I think) and Goldmines tiles... but I managed to take control the main field for the win.

cool game, I really like the minis, ofc mostly because I am drawing them! ;) Pity that I couldnt close the small gold mine city in the east you offered me. but I think I could have recognized that there was no more suitable tile to close.
Drawing the cccf to split points in city we occupied both with two meeples each was the perfect moment as you ran out of meeples in the late game. Before that turn I slightly smelled victory because I had one meeple left to score the needed points for overtaking. But then a smart move followed where you were joining a small farm with the rrff, so my goal to build up on own fields because main field was lost wasnt possible to reach anymore.
congrats Jere!
cheers you Wizards! :D

It is not often that I have a lot of luck playing Carcassonne but, it would appear, the reason for this is that I save it up for when I play my Dutch friend Jere!

We played our Minis match tonight and the good lady luck was very much on my side, unusually. I think that if I had been losing heavily, we would both have had a power cut, lost the game, and would have had to start again!

Any way, enough of the rambling....the score was:-

TheSteveAllen  :green-meeple: 141 v Jere  :yellow-meeple: 125

Although my fliers were up to their usual sub-standards (missing everything of use), the gold and the run of the tiles more than made up for my avian ineptitude.

Thanks, once again, Jere. I wish you a bit more luck in your next matches (and even more luck for me).

Hello Wizards!

I am sorry to say that my family has been struck by tragedy and I am not in a gamy mood. I tried to play Leven in the base game but couldn´t focus. I hope I will be back (sort of) in a week or two. If the round is finished before then I have to forfeit, so sorry about that.

I hoped that a good game of carc would help me focus on other things, alas it did not. Enjoy your games / WI

hello wizards,
another cool mini league game took place today. after I drew a tile that got me 23 pts city with mage, 9 pts cloister and additionally 2 gold nuggets and gave me a large lead, Steve achieved a great comeback. but with my last tile I could tie the 42 pts farm. expansion tiles came a bit in my favour I think, so the result margin in the end doesnt mirror the game correctly.
thanks Steve and lets rock on in your next games

edit: forgot the screen. here it is.

Thanks for the excellent game Adror, as I said before, these games rely a bit more on luck than the base game, but I had my overdose of luck against Jere. I must admit that I nearly fainted when you turned over the CCRR tile with the cloister and the gold, but that is the way things happen. You had a very deserved win, and if you would like another bite, by way of practice, please contact me in the Slack channel some time.

Another extraordinary game in the Wizards group of the minis league. This is really turning out to be a great championship.

After a very late kick-off, we played this match well into the small hours of this morning with both players getting, in my opinion, equal shares of luck, both good and bad.

The result was:-

Jma03  :red-meeple: 140 v TheSteveAllen  :green-meeple: 178

The difference in the scores was largely down to me winning an unfinished city containing the mage. A new tactic for me, and a very useful one.

Muchas gracias mi amigo Jma03, y buena suerte en tus otros partidos!

Thanks for the game steve !!
Enjoy much because it was very even and as well said Steve had the same opportunities, he decided for that castle to the east where I caught a meeple.
My pleasure my friend

Have any of you wizards managed to arrange a match with Singing Dwarf yet? I have sent PMs, but he has not replied. It would appear that he has not been on the forum since June 24th, so I am starting to suspect that me might have a 'no show'. I hope not, as we are already one member down, albeit, temporarily.  :(

In the end, jma03 and I did not play last night. First I thought that 30 minutes past midnight was too late, so we exchanged a few messages to try to see when we could play but after that I couldn't fall asleep so I wrote again a bit later to see if we could still play... but probably he didn't check his messages again. My fault, sorry for acting like a weathervane. :)

I am also unable to reach Singing Dwarf. I sent him 2-3 messages about 2 weeks ago and no replies.

hello wizards,
I could manage to win the mini league game vs WhatIf. a really cool and exiting game. Distribution of the mini tiles was equal, drawing some well fitting tiles in general I had bit more luck, especially closing cities and winning the gold. But whatif had a great comeback on the farms, I was 2-0 in front and he did not even tie it to 2-2 but nearly took the farmers lead. In the end the result was 222:189.
Again I wish you good luck in the ongoing tournament. Lets rock and beatem all ; )

If we don't manage to arrange our match in the coming days, jma03 and I, then no problem because I'll be in Canada in 2 weeks until September 2nd. It's going to be very easy to play our game in the middle of the night in Europe!  ;D

As part of tonight's marathon Carcassonne session, in which I played What If? three times and Danisthirty once, I am pleased to say that I am down to 1 game remaining in this league, which seems to have been running since I started to shave.

As it is very late, and I am very confused over what happened in which match, I will just post the result, and let you all make up your own stories about what happened.

Result was:- TheSteveAllen  :green-meeple: 195 v What If?  :red-meeple: 137

For some strange reason, the more I play this combination of expansions, the luckier I appear to get.

Thanks again What If? for all 3 excellent games tonight. I really enjoyed all of them, but especially this one where, for once, my flyers actually hit their target!! All the best of luck in the rest of the competition my friend!

Una partida loca!! A crazy game! Really thought I would lose with jacobo's last tile (used to remove the mage from an incomplete city worth 16pts). Very close game! Gold helped me to win as jacobo has been a bit more efficient with farming.

What a game that was! For my first ever game against a real player on JCZ, that was very close until the end.

Jéré managed to get a sneaky CFCF tile which opened up my top farm, giving Jéré an extra 39 points, as well as the 11 gold pieces collected.

Good game!

I've just finished one of the most enjoyable an friendly games of Carcassonne that I have every played since joining Carcassonne Central.

Not only did the tiles come out fairly and evenly distributed, but we both had our share of good and bad luck in equal proportions. One fly in the ointment was the fact that I managed to place the Mage in his large city for a while, when I was trying to place the witch but, to my opponent's credit, help helped me back in return by assisting the closure of one of my cloisters.

The strange thing about this game was that the two farm crop circles came out very early, and this, combined with a bit of viscious blocking by myself, resulted in a game that was not all about the farms (or indeed, the gold), but was about all aspects of Carcassonne in equal proportion.

The result was:-

TheSteveAllen  :yellow-meeple: 149 v ARabidMeerkat  :red-meeple: 123

I think that this result almost guarantees a top spot for Jere, but I will be interested to see how Adrornalin gets on in his final games.

Once again, thanks for the game Will. I really wish you the best of luck against the others, especially against my old friend Adror.  >:D

The best of luck to both of you in tonight's match. I will be watching Sky news tonight to see how you both got on!!

Congratulations, too, to Jere for winning this group where the results have been more than a little unpredictable. With 3 games to go, there are still 4 places which are undetermined. I wish that the Scottish Premiership was as unpredictable. They might see attendances at matches improve if they were.

Indeed, it was a great game. Definitely got lucky with the gold!! It was a close game overall, much closer than the final score indicates! Connecting the fields towards the end was the killer move. I think for the very first time of my life I got the last Mage&Witch tile, which normally gives an enormous advantage but I did not manage to steal the big incomplete city so it was not worth placing the Mage there.

Hello all again!

Adrornalin 211  :yellow-meeple:
Me 72  :red-meeple:

Very bad game for me! I played my meeples all too early and ended up having all of them trapped by the end (only managed to free two due to Crop Circles).

A very well played game by Adrornalin!

thanks for playing and for posting the screen!  :)
for next games, try to save some meeples, dont put them in too risky places too soon, especially not on cloisters in games with expansions. I gave some space to rescue your meeples but after couple of turns I couldnt resist anymore trapping them ;)
the more you play, the better you get, I wish you good luck and lot of fun playing carc!

the group is speeding up I see. arabidmeerkat and i have our game today 9pm uk time. I think this is my last game in group stage. afair, I have played jma couple of weeks ago, and I lost. but he still has to post the results. thats why I am meanwhile wondering has this game really took place or not. or he posted it and i oversaw and mrnumbers as well in the group standings.

Adror, I would need the date the game was played. Do you have this info? Score is nice to have too, but not required for Elo. Thanks!

On Fr 14/07 I posted lets play today jma. But neither I dont remember if we played that evening, nor if the game really took place, at least in this competition. I am getting old.. But little I remember I lost a minis game quite close, and it was not against you. So it had to be against jma probably. We need his information in that case.

11 games played, 4 left.
The results of the game Adrornalin vs. jma03 were never posted. So, it would be nice to know at least the score. Until then I assume Adrornalin could be the winner of the group :))

I think both players should always take the screen capture, to have a backup just in case.

Good, please don't forget to say when the game was played. Maybe you can look at the timestamp of the image file?

So, last day and I haven´t played my two last games against ARabidMeerkat and Jma03.

Jma03 haven´t gotten back to me and I´ve had problems finding a time suiting me and ARabidMeerkat. This was not my intention but probably my fault and I beg my pardon to you all for not finishing in time. Not that it matters much for me in regards to placement but a tournament should always play out. Happy competition to those better than me.

Since I allowed Piet_Agoras to play his game on this weekend, 24.09 is now final deadline. Try to play your game till that time.
If jma03 won't show up till that time, his results will be crossed out from the x-score list.

If jma03 won't show up till that time, his results will be crossed out from the x-score list.

That would bring some significant changes in the group standings: Adrornalin would jump to the first place as his PD would be the best among the three players having 3 wins.

I realize that, but I can't wait forever. Given that we know official results of only 2 matches (both were lost), I have nothing left but to disqualify absent player, eliminating all his results.

It is looking like this group is going to be a 3 way tie with all three winning one game each. Hey ho!!  :(

jma03 didn't respond, so I have to erase all his results from the table. Besides, game ARabidMeerkat
vs. What If? never happened. After that we left with very interesting situation, when 3 players have 6 group points and 2 players - 0 points. So final standings are determined by PD. And, as I said previously (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=3405.msg52291#msg52291), Adrornalin could and actually became the winner of the group!

It's a shame things had to end up in this way for those who took part fully and played all their games to have favourable results withdrawn.

Congratulations to Adror for finishing at the top of the list, and commiserations to Jere and TheSteveAllen who were equally deserving.

Thanks MrNumbers for making the difficult decisions and for enabling everyone else to move on...

Completely agree!

Yes, this was very difficult decision to make, but since it is a competition after all, we should be stricter than with ordinary, friendly games. I hope I won't be forced to repeat such decisions again in the future.
