Title: Freshers' Week
Post by: TheSteveAllen on November 24, 2018, 03:13:09 AM
We now have our 3 divisions confirmed for the Carcassonne Central Divisional Winter League 2018 as shown on my attachment.

This does not, however, mean that the tournament can start, as there are still a few things left for me to set up.

From now until midnight on Friday 30th November we have Freshers' Week, where I am inviting you all to participate in ensuring that everything is up and running well, and that everyone understands the rules and the tactics of the league point scoring system.

Please use this thread, Private messages or the Slack chat room to arrange pre-season friendly games against opponents in any division where you can try out the scoring system, in many cases for the first time.

I would like to ensure that the following criteria are met as much as possible before we start:-

League Points

As a result of playing league matches, players gain league points according to the following table:-

Most game points for roads – 1 point
Most game points for cities – 1 point
Most game points for cloisters – 1 point
Most game points for farms – 1 point
Most game points overall (formerly referred to as 'a win') – 1 point
Tying any of the above with opponent – 0.5 points

This means that all matches have 5 points available to be distributed to the two players.

I now invite you all to organise your friendly matches, especially with players in other divisions to your own, and get posting your results to this thread.

In the meantime, I will be constructing the 3 'official' threads that we will be using for the Winter 2018 tournament - one for the Premiership, one for the Championship and one for league 'A'

Please note that pre-season friendly are completely optional, but advisable in many ways. It will also allow us to iron out any problems before the season starts.

I found this. I don’t know if it helps. Basically set up a game port through your firewall, give your opponent your IP address and port number that you have opened. You run the game locally, they connect remotely.

I did it very easily on Ubuntu. Still can’t get it working on Mac after 2 years.

Thanks Steve!

I've attached a short guide I wrote a few years ago explaining the basics to the home network reconfiguring which may be required to host JCZ games from home without using the online server. Hopefully this will help.

If not, I'm always open to questions! :) :(y)

If anyone in the Premiership (or anyone not involved in testing in the Championship) would like a pre-season try-out of the game to get used to the idea of winning league points, instead of trying to win just the game, I should be able to make myself available in the evenings for this purpose. I can usually be contacted in the Slack chat room.

I downloaded the JCloisterZone file and extracted it, but I can't work out how to run it. I've just got loads of folders of stuff.

What operating system are you using Jack? This will make a big difference as to what to do next. You need to have Java installed.

Hey Jack.

You just need to run the JCloisterZone.jar file. This is assuming you are running Java on your machine? If not, you can install Java from here: https://www.java.com/en/download/

It may sound like a lot of work, but it's really quite straight forward and I'm sure it'll be worth it when it's running! 8)

OpenJDK is required for Linux, not the one from the oracle site. This works perfectly. (Just in case Jack is running Ubuntu, despite the amount of 'U's in its name). ;D

Thanks for the game thodekey!

Interesting how you benefited from my chosen expansion and I benefited from your chosen expansion. 13 gold bars is a personal record though!

You're more than welcome, Dan.
It made me:
1. doubting my choice of expansion
2. persuade me that i need to turn the switch in my head for the scoring mechanism in this new kind of competition
3. i still need a lot of practice
4. enjoy a game of Carcassonne since a long while

So thank you for a game that wasn't dull at all  ;)

Good to see that you enjoyed the 'different' challenge. It is not too late to change your expansion, as I agree that the goldmines does not really add much tactically to our new format. Let me know if you want a change Thomas.

It does add more cloisters than any other expansion that springs to mind though. And that most definitely could lead to some interesting tactical decisions.

Thanks for the offer, TheSteveAllen but I'll stick to my first choice.  It's a perfect alibi when i loose  ;)
AND it adds both 4 more cloisters and 2 interesting ways to lengthen/share a long road...so i'll take the risk.
I won't be playing in Dan's (the golden hold-up) league so maybe my opponent won't snatch 13 gold bars right in front of me...  >:(

Hey! I let you keep 3 of those gold bars for yourself didn't I? If anything that was very generous of me. Next time I'm going for all of them... >:D
