Title: Essen Spiel '18 25th Oct - 28th Oct
Post by: Decar on July 12, 2018, 01:53:18 AM
The hotel is booked!

Mrs_Decar and I are coming to Essen :D (But we travel back on Sunday, so will miss the last day)

Who else is coming?  Would we like to organise a meetup one evening to play games?
Carcassonne Forum usually meet one afternoon too!

Which hotel did you book? I consider going, but this would be my first time there.

We booked at the place we stayed last time - NH Essen.  It's quite pricey and about 25 minute walk from the Messe, wish I'd looked a bit sooner tbh.  But at least I know where it is!  There are some cheaper places further north, but that's getting to bus ride territory

Sadly, still no Essen this year, (though we do have a nice trip planned for the fall for an in-laws wedding).

My wife is up for a trip next year! I hope to do a Carcassonne - Essen pilgrimage :)

Still a just a dream at this point! Hope all 2018 attendees have a great time!!!!!

I will be there all 4 days, but it will be hard for me to manage some event at the evenings: our apartment is ~50km away from Essen, and my friends won't wait for me while I will be with you at our evening event. So it will be too hard for me to get back to apartment after the session. But let's see, maybe we could manage something.

Is there a special tile this year?

From what I read, because I'm was wondering the same, they printed Speil 14-17? all at the same time, there was no word for a 18+ printing that I found. I hope so though, I still have some stuff on Cundo I can buy, and I only have the '17 tile, would be nice to have antoher one.

currently, there is no information about Carcassonne tiles for Essen.

I'll go to the Spiel! I will represent Chile in the World Tournament :)

I take advantage of asking, Any information about hotels? I think that Devir will not pay for my stay, so I must start now to look for one :(

Btw I hope to meet all the people from the forum that goes to Essen  :D

Welcome to CarcC Khaosk - you have 3 options to play at the championships at Essen:
1) Win yoir national championship to be invited to the world championships
2) Enter the Carcassonne tournament the day before the world championship and win - this involves playing various Carcassonne spin-offs to win a seat  (this may no longer be the case)
3) win the world championship last year, you're given a free slot to defend your title.

Good luck!

Xander12:  wonderful news!  It may ne worth asking Devir, they may have an apartment rental.  I would advise looking north of the messe essen. Maybe an hour walk from the location, i understand there are busses.

Xander12,
please contact the organizer of the Carcassonne World Cup "Spielezentrum Herne". I think they have rent some rooms for the participants of  the world cup.

I have good news and bad news, guys:

First of all, I already have the tickets ready to go to Duesseldorf (Thanks Diego of Devir Chile!). I will leave Santiago on October 24th and I will arrive on the 25th at noon, and with luck I will be able to be on the four days of the fair!  ;D Until Monday the 29th at night, which will be when I will leave  :)

And the bad news is that I do not have lodging. I am a student, and unfortunately I am not able to afford the money necessary to pay for 5 days of stay (nope, not even the cheap hotels with low qualifications), although my options are:

1.- AirBnB (hopefully maybe get something not so expensive and in time)
2.- That some contact within Devir Chile give me the data they used for previous years.
3.- Spielezentrum Herne (I'm still waiting for their reply to my emails)
4.- That some other Chilean who is going to travel to Essen take pity on me and, or, pay half an accommodation, or if there is a recidente there, be my host.

Obviously, I do not expect any option to be free, but from there to pay ~$100-80 every night, I can not (I would have to use the savings I had planned for the fair, but even that would not reach me  :-[)

That for now. Just have more details or, I find a solution in time, I will let you know immediately  C:-)

Good luck finding somewhere!

Perhaps you could hook up with MrNumbers and his companions? I don't know what his plans are this year, but previously he has shared an apartment or similar near to Essen. There may be space with him, and it would probably make it all the more affordable if there is an extra person to split the bill between. Plus he is an excellent Carcassonne player so you will have someone to practice against before the big day!

I asked over on CarcF for you Xander. Sometimes lodges are booked.

When will you make a decision on flights?

Muchas gracias Decar!  :(y)

The roundtrip flights are ready, the only thing that remains is transportation, lodging and internet (this one is almost finished), and in AirBnB I am seeing a very cheap option near Düsseldorf: half an hour from the airport and two from Essen (I'll have to get up very early those days!), but I have to decide quickly, because I have 48 hours so that they do not charge me the service charge. And about transportation, I guess I'll use Google's help. (I take this opportunity to request information on public transport for tourists there :-[ )

2hrs by public transport, that's going to be tough! I've heard that there is work on some of the rail lines.

We arrive Wednesday night and plan to leave on Sunday morning, we have a small hotel room about 30 minutes walk from Messe Essen. You'd be welcome to squeeze in with my wife and me, if you fancy putting up with our snoring.

btw, there is usually a meetup with lots of Carcassonne fans at the Cundco Booth on the Thursday afternoon (2.30 I think).

We usually book Airbnb apartment, and amount of people and beds is strictly defined. This year is not an exception, sorry.

Usually it is at 12:30, but everything could be changed :)

To tell you the truth, my way to the World Championships wasn't really straightforward. Actually I finished 3rd at the qualification tournament but the two finalists couldn't afford the trip to Essen...

I'm sure you have as much right to be there as anybody else. And I'm sure you will do well too! 8) :violet-meeple: :(y)

It's much less of an achievement, but I was only able to finish 3rd (joint) at the UK championships because one of the top 16 players couldn't continue into the elimination stage. Fortunately I'd managed to scrape 17th so went through by the skin of my teeth!

In many countries (including Baltic States) organizing company pays all the trip costs for representing player. It's not the case in Hungary?

Thank you. Yes, see you there. :) By the way, where and when exactly?

Unfortunately the Hungarian publisher pays neither the travel cost nor the accomodation. But under these conditions it maybe wasn't the best idea to arrange the qualification tournament only one month before the WC final. It's not an easy task to find anything for cheap now. In the end I decided to book a room in Düsseldorf, so I'll need to travel ca. 1 hour by train to reach the event each day. I can live with that, but others may have found it too complicated.

There is a CarcF meet up at 1pm on Thursday, it seems no one wants to move that.

Given most of the CarcC members cannot make this time, how about meeting at the Cundco booth at around 4:30pm?
That should avoid any traffic problems!
Or perhaps later and get some dinner?
Mr Numbers your friends would be welcome too if you need a ride back home, I'll have my car too (back at the hotel), if necessary I'll drive you back :)

I'm in. Though my apartment is in Düsseldorf, so I should leave around 7 p.m I'm afraid.
It would be great to play some Carc games with fellow CarcC members as a preparation for the tournament on Saturday.

Hi all,
I am at the Carcassonne Tournament booth or CundCo booth at around 1 pm with all the members from the CarcF Forum.
I am not long at the exhibition. To meet at 4 pm - that would be almost the time when I have to leave the halls.

Booth 2B110 Hall 2 - CundCo Shop

For the members who are earlier at the "Spiel" in Essen tomorrow, please let us see. I am really interested to meet Jeré and also the rest of you.

Sorry, that I am not talking much in the last time. More will follow.

I also meet at 4:30 pm Jére, Jeven and again Decar, Mrs_Decar, MrNumbers and Xanderx12. But I had to go away around 20 minutes later, because of my booked train ticket.

I hope to meet the members again at the Spiel '19 in Essen next year.
