Scoring
« on: December 03, 2015, 02:59:48 PM »
Hello! I am new here but this seems like a great forum. Anyway I got into Carcassonne via the iOS game which is great and then my wife bought me the classic base pack. Now I am slightly obsessed.

Some things I have questions about if people don't mind answering:

- scoring. I was surprised the scorecard only goes up to 50. So I used a cribbage board which is actually really good. What do others use?

- inns and cathedrals - the man in Orcs Nest (board game shop in London) said the new 2.0 expansion was compatible with the 1.0 base game. I think he said the old artwork was on the flip side but maybe I misunderstood? Are these still going to make expansions for the 1.0 version?

What some people do for scoring is use a dice on the scoreboard instead of a meeple and turn it round each time they pass 0.

With regards to the version 2 art work, the manufacturers decided in their infinite wisdom that the art had to be changed which most fans are fairly bitter about.  They said that the new version was compatible because the backs of both versions are the same and the size is the same!  Not many agree with that but you can play with both versions together even if it does look a bit shit.

They are not going to continue to make the old style art so you have a few options;
1, put up with mixing art and buy whatever versions you come across
2, stick to new art and wait for more to come out.
3, stick to old art and scour the Internet for old art versions.

Good luck and I hope you enjoy our forums.
Just lay the damn tile!

good call on the dice.

Wow now I understand - I like the old art style so this is a shame.

Thanks for your reply

Hi Johnny Rep, and welcome to the forums! :)

Not much I can add to Rosco's comments above, other than to refer back to your original question about scoring. Another option is to use the special 50/100 score tiles that come with the Inns & Cathedrals expansion to keep track of how many times you've been around the board. You simply give one out or flip it (it has "50" printed on one side and "100" printed on the other) with each circuit of the board. I quite like these and use them in my games, but you could use any kind of token really...

Hope this helps! :(y)

I agree with Dan, nothing feels better then a stack of 50/100 tiles in front of you during a big carcassonne game!

Hi and welcome to the forums  :orange-meeple:

The 50 scoreboard is a little small, especially in longer games, but the score tiles definitely help!

Also if you're looking for some expansions in the old style I think the best bet at the moment is big box 5 as they still seem to be printing this (or at least I've seen quite a few new copies about in FLGS's).

It's a bit of an investment, especially seeing as you already have a base set, but it comes with Inns and Cathedrals/Traders and builders/wheel of fortune and hills and sheep (as well as a special hills and sheep river) which is a decent selection of expansions.

We don't use the 50/100 tiles because some players play with their tiles and flip them over "accidentally".  Plus they are insufficient for larger games.  We just use poker chips to keep it simple.  Each chip is 50.  Stack up those chips!!    :green-meeple: :@
Who got a smudge on the tile?

Thanks for all the scoring tips. So definitely no more "old style" minis or expansions?

Not definitely, but it seems increasingly unlikely.

On the other hand, this year's Easter / Carcassonne on tour expansion (German Castles) was in the old style, so maybe that trend will continue at least.
