Hi MrNumbers,

I will inform Klaus-Juergen Wrede and the HiG-Team...
Did you send this information to Udo Schmitz (Carcassonne-on-Tour) by email?

Somebody is familiar for the price for this kind of event (something like Saturday + Sunday)

Unfortunately I won't be able to go to Essen this year after attending the last 3 events (2011,2012,2013).

I'll have to travel to France and stay there 2 months and a half for work.

Ofcourse I'll be there... :D
4th consecutive year...awesome.... I will be staying at Ibis Dusseldorf Airport, for 3 days and will visit Spiel Friday & Sunday.

Any news yet about new Carcassonne games/promos @ Spiel?
Another Carcassonne-Around-The-World spin-off? I expect the recently released Cloister mini-expansion to be available from Cundco/HIG booth?

We will get some admission tickets for the Spiel 2014 in Essen - One day tickets - for both forums (CarcassonneCentral and Carcassonne-Forum).

Who likes to have a one-day-ticket?

Just had an email conversation with Barbara from Spielbox and it looks like they might be willing to start reprinting some of their older expansions if there's demand... I know I'd be grateful if they reprinted Tunnels and I'm sure Cathars and Plague are also in demand.  If someone going to Essen could bring it up with them maybe we'll get somewhere with them and maybe even get rule clarifications with a reprint to finally answer our questions! Here is a segment of our email conversation.

At the moment there is no plan, but I could discuss it during the fair (SPIEL) in Essen

That would be great being able to get our hands on some of those expansions again. Regardless of how people feel about the expansions themselves it would at least stop them from going for hugely inflated prices on eBay.

I was of the impression that Spielbox had already decided never to reprint any of these expansions though?

Maybe I'm wrong, but it looks as though The Plague is still available for a fair price if you get it directly from Spieblox:

Reprints!

Oh say it is so. I'll buy ten copies of Die Tunnels, a vow I make here and now. They are so great for fan expansions and variants. This is the one expansion I want so bad but there is no way I am going to pay any ridiculous price for it.

A new Spiel 2014 tile was just announced and it uses the new Carcassonne 2 artwork, a very troubling move. The announcement also states that unlike previous expansions, this will be unique to a special Spielfest 2014 goodie bag and won't be available in the future separately. Tobias's worst two fears realized in one promo!

CundCo newsletter - I know - but see it easy - this tile is in the new graphics - if you play the tile in the standard Carcassonne (our beloved graphics) than the city has less points for score than usual...

what im doing now is that it is an expansion for a different game. a different collection. so not for mine.. it eases it a bit.

Regardless of which version of Carcassonne the Spiel 2014 tile is for or whether it should or shouldn't be counted as an expansion/ souvenir/ whatever, I must confess that I do quite like the look of it as it's bright and colorful and there's a lot going on with it.

So if per chance anyone should find themselves with a spare copy of this tile that they need to find a good home for then I'd be delighted to provide one! And by way of a thank you I'll name my next child after you (not that there's one on the way)  ;).

be carefull what you wish for!

My son (Ben) will have his first birthday on Saturday (hence why I am not on my way to Essen). Since he was born, my wife and I have had maybe 2 or 3 full nights of sleep. Normally he wakes up at least twice. His sister (Jessica) will be 4 in December and she has always been an excellent sleeper. If a third child would struggle with sleep as much as Ben does then I think we're happy to stick with two!

he he.... perhaps the next baby will get the name "kettlefish"...  >:D

"Aww, little baby Kettlefish..." That'll raise some interesting questions!  ;D I have checked the family tree though and there have been no Kettlefishs in the family that I can see as far back as I can go!

Well I guess that Europe gets the conventions that they deserve.  I had heard that board games were more established over there. It is nice to see all the linked stuff but would be better to be there.

Very considerate of Kettlefish to take the time to pass this along to us all.

We had a local gaming cafe open up a couple of moths ago  The Hexagon Board Game Cafe, the owners said they were inspired by the gaming cafes they had played in in Europe.

Again thanks for taking the time to pass it along.

Florianbelmonte - it looks like the Carcassonne New Edition - something to eat... (https://twitter.com/Florianbelmonte/status/522490575904571393)

Those look amazing. I can't imagine anyone actually eating them though. Or playing with them come to think of it...

I love cookies so I would totally eat them after taking heaps of photos of them first!   ^-^
Mmmm... cookies and juice!!!!  ;D (I don't drink coffee or tea)

Hi,

here are some impressions from the SPIEL.
Kettlefish is ill and couldn't write at the moment.

I went there yesterday and met Kettlefish, MrNumber, Ratz65, Strix and Udo (from CC-on-tour).

I met the first three mentioned above at the CundCo booth long before our meeting time. We had a short chat and MrNumbers gave Kettlefish and me a present.
A wonderful Meeple-Pictureframe with a picture of his home town Riga. Thanks a lot MrNumbers!!!
A standard meeple as a comparison.

At our meeting time we six have waited 15 minutes because a few other members had announced to come, but unfortunately they didn't come.
So we went to a nerby restaurant and in the gaming zone. Udo brought one game of Goldrush and one New Edition and some cookies to eat.
All of the cookies went quickly into our stomach ;D ... not all, because otherwise I couldn't make the following picture this morning ;-)

Than we had a look at the new edition. I must say that the details are very pretty, but the colors ... a lot of discussion takes place in both forums.

We had a test play of Goldrush. I think we (we testplayers) all could agree, that this is a good game with some interesting new mechanism.
At approx. 2 pm we separated and I went with Strix to the "Settlers of Catan" booth to get a special promo-card with an autograph of Klaus Teuber (the author of the game).
After we got one I went on a shopping tour through the halls on my own.

Now 4 pictures with impressions of the fair are following - 2 of them have nothing to do with CC ;-)

The first picture is from the booth of the scottish Lamont Brothers (Fragor Games). They are selling their new game Dragonscroll.
There was a pre-order time for 1000 games which I missed due to a vacation in Sweden. So I was lucky to get one of the approx. 250 copies they sold without pre-order.
At lunch time (2 hours from opening time) they are sold out - which means they only sell the pre-ordered games from that time on.

A giant puzzle for those who wants to do some other things than playing CC. But you need a lot of time and space (approx. 544 x 192 cm).
I think the puzzle is deliverd with a small handcart (no joke).
The puzzle is set together from the visitors of the fair.

A picture of the contents of the "Hans im Päckchen" Box
(http://www.carcassonne-forum.de/gallery/image.php?album_id=10&image_id=1776)

A picture of the CundCo-Shop booth.
I took the picture in the late afternoon approx. 1 hour before closing time.
During the whole day there were long waiting lines from both sides. So I think they have sold a lot yesterday.

That's it.
When I'm right, all of us 6 test-players forgot to take pictures of the meeting/test-playing  :'(
Sorry.

PS - I don't think there is anywhere in my house that I could fit that 32,000 piece puzzle!

Probably not here either.  ;D

At least not the space to build it. But one of my bedroom walls is plain white and easily 10 meters wide, which could hold the finished puzzle.
I like building them! I have the, back then largest puzzle, made out of 12 000+ pieces. It's a sundown painting with underwater life, beach, houses with festivities, mountains etc. This one is 3 meters wide. Built it twice!

I refrained from buying today's largest because I did not like the motif; Several framed images in orange and yellow depicting figurines.
The one shown in the thread here, of 32 000 pieces, looks like something worth hanging up. I will definately look to see if I can get that one!

Then there is the goodie bag with Carcassonne. 20 Euro sounds reasonable and would love to have it!

Don't know if the River will be available in the CundCo-Shop, but could be 'cause they mentioned it in the newletter.
All the 12 River tiles in the box are on one sheet and not in the original tuckbox  :(
I'm searching for the german river tuckbox. It's one thing missing in my collection ;)

Not for my part.
I thought Scott thought about the normal River I.
In this goodie box there is the normal River I sheet (like in the shop) and not the bb5 version.
So I don't think that the bb5 version will be available in the shop on monday.
But I'm not a clairvoyant and I don't have more information than you. We'll have to wait 'til monday.

No worries, I bought the River I from Cundco earlier this year, so that's why I knew it was there.

Of the things in the goody bag, the Besiegers is the only thing I want/need, and I'll also probably get the triangles from Cundco too (I've already preordered the Spielbox ones).

I'll be waiting for that day. :)

Thanks, Benny, for a good review! :(y)
From my side I can only add/comment few things:
It was so good to see forum members "offline" - Kettlefish, Benny, Ratz65, Strix... Also notable persons from HiG - Klaus-Jürgen Wrede, Udo Schmitz...
I really liked Carcassonne Goldrush! Cool mechanics, not so powerful "farms", opportunity to do something useful (steal some gold) when you do nothing with your followers. BTW, my copy of Goldrush is signed by Klaus-Jürgen! :(y)
Also I had a great opportunity to visit a special area (dedicated mostly for press), where you can examine all new games in almost complete silence. Unfortunately, rules mostly in German (what a surprise!), but still this experience was very useful to understand overall direction of this year's boardgames.
Since I don't like wargames and cardgames (mostly) and I usually play boardgames with my son or in not so experienced company, I bought two relatively easy games: "Dino Race" and "Gold Ahoi!". My luggage was limited to cabin free bag, so with Goldrush, 11 copies of Darmstadt and some other Carcassonne related staff, it was all I brought from Essen this year.
One more thing to add: after the fair I had a wonderful opportunity to visit a party, dedicated to "Queen Games" 25-years anniversary (BIG thanks to Udo Schmitz!), where I was introduced to "Queen Games" owner Rajive Gupta and have brief conversation with Moritz Brunnhofer from HiG. It was a lot of beer and a lot of Indian spicy food! :(y) :D

I visited Essen second year in a row and I want it to become a tradition! So much positive emotions - member meeting, new Carcassonne staff, many-many new boardgames. Isn't it complete happiness for a Carcassonne fan? ^-^

Thursday - 16 10 2014:

1. I had luck - no much people at the entrance, no long wait to get in the halls.
2. My first way was the booth from "Spielerei" where I bought my piece of "Darmstadt minis".
3. Then I went to the booth from HiG to get a coffee and to left my jacket there. A small talk with many of the HiG team.
4. Then I went to the booth from Spielmaterial.de - I bought my wooden pieces.
5. Then I went to the tournament booth from HiG - were I met Benny and MrNumbers. Also there were Christian H with his brother and the worldchampion from 2007 Sebastan Trunz.
6. I went together with MrNumbers to the booth from BGG - All day they make the videos and also they sell their pieces from their shop.
7. We walked around through the hall 1 - at the boot of Brain Games - MrNumbers liked to talk with them and I went alone back to hall 3 to by some more wooden pieces at spielmaterial.de
8. At 11:30 my appointment with Georg Wild - We had only time to talk about Carcassonne New Edition and short about the triangle tile from "Halb so wild". During our time - Georg was talking with ohter people. And guest came to me and asked me about Goldrush - I told them how this game works and what special function it has - then Georg came back and we finished our talk. Georg had much to write down for information - all about the abbot from the new edition.
9. At 12:00 my appointment with Barbara Nostheide from Spielbox. There she told me that they really like to republish some of the old Spielbox minis, but she liked to talk about it with HiG. I told her that I often told the people at HiG, that there is enough interest from the fan base.
10. At 12:30 I went to the tournament booth in hall 1 were I met Udo, Benny, MrNumbers, Strix and Ratz65. Udo went to the booth of HiG to get the games Carcassonne New Edition and the Carcassonne Goldrush. We played our game Goldrush and then each of us was running again through the halls.

Gardens are one of the things Abbots can be placed on (they can also go on cloisters). It's a new feature. I forget the rules for them, though.

Were the world championships held using Carcassonne 2.0 rules? I don't really know what the difference is to be honest but aside from the Abbot I've heard mention of Gardens which I have no idea about...
I've called with Thomas (Herner Spielezentrum). He told me that the championship rules were the same as the years before. No rule change this year, perhaps next year...

They played with the standard base game rules.

Thanks for this kettlefish!  :(y)

So the winner of the uk championship came 34th  :(n)

Even Latvia's champion came 20th despite coming 3rd (I think) last year.  :(

It must have been very exciting to watch!

How did they get there??

It varies I think. I don't know for sure but I imagine some will have driven, others may have got the train and some, especially those from further afield, will probably have come via plane.

and no doubt some used the magic portal tile from Princess and the Dragon -  but I think he was asking who beat who? to get to the final

Each year at the Spiel in Essen, I buy some wooden pieces at the booth from Spielmaterial.de.

Here are some examples from this year:

kettlefish - it looks like you bought all the colors of 12mm dice - is that for scorekeeping?  :)

I did not know those were available at Spielmaterial.de

You gave me the idea with the scorekeekping, I like to try it.

The dice have a size of 16mm.

Ah, I see. You'll find that the 12mm work better as they fit on the track better. The 16mm are very full on the track. But the 12mm are hard to find in all the various colors.

To get a brown 12mm for example, I had to buy a travel edition Backgammon game and rob one of the brown dice. It's a perfect brown. :)

For my custom color meeples (lavender, maroon, etc.) I had to spray paint some.

In the picture are 12 dice colors, but in the dropdown you can only choose 10 :-(
