Other Games / Dragon Dice
« on: June 30, 2019, 12:48:56 PM »
Apart from organising and playing in Carcassonne tournaments on here, I thought that one or two members might be interested in my other passion, Dragon Dice, for which I produce a blog, thanks to Decar's hosting.

It is, as it says, a dice game, which is not everyone's cup of tea, and has historically had mediocre reviews on BGG.

In October last year, the Version 4 rules were produced, and the game has been largely streamlined and re-written and is now an excellent, if not cheap, pastime.

The blog can be found using the link below and, if anything whets your appetite for the game, please let me know and I will answer any questions that you have.

We are sadly lacking players in the UK, and I am desperately looking for other like-minded people to join our small band of merry men, currently mainly based in USA, Australia and England (although I represent Scotland and have a friend in Belgium that plays).

MrNumbers - Princess & Dragon
Rosco - Cathars
TheSteveAllen - Count of Carcassonne

Fixtures

Each player is to play a single two-person game of Carcassonne using JCloisterZone against each of the other players in the division. The starting date will be today Monday 3rd June 2019 and all games must be played and the results posted on this thread before midnight GMT on Friday 27th September 2019. The starting player in each case will be chosen at random.

The tile set for each game will consist of the base game and each of the competitors' chosen expansions, i.e. two expansions are to be used in every match.

The Division

As a result of each match, each player will be awarded league points according to the following rules:-

Most game points for roads – 1 point
Most game points for cities – 1 point
Most game points for cloisters – 1 point
Most game points for farms – 1 point
Most game points overall (formerly referred to as 'a win') – 1 point
Tying any of the above with opponent – 0.5 points

A league table with points gained from matches played will be maintained and regularly posted to this thread by the tournament organiser.

The top ranked two players after all matches have been played will be declared 'Champion' and 'Runner-up' respectively. The lowest ranked two players will be eligible for relegation.

In addition to the Champion and Runner-up, the following will be awarded:-

The Brave Brigand – the player with the most league points for roads
The Knoble Knight – the player with the most league points for cities
The Crafty Cleric – the player with the most league points for cloisters
The Fruitful Farmer – the player with the most league points for farms
The Triumphant Tiler – the player with the most league points for winning games

After each match, it is the winner's responsibility to ensure that the result is posted to this thread clearly showing the points awarded separately for Roads, Cloisters, Cities and Farms.

I am pleased to announce that the CCDL will go on as promised, starting on Monday 3rd June and finishing on Saturday 17th August.

All rules will be as for the previous two tournaments and the divisions will be produced according to previous results and the amount of entrants.

Anyone who wants to play and is committed to playing all their matches in this timescale, please register your interest by commenting this thread with your first and second choices of expansion that you wish to play.

Anyone not registered by midnight GMT on 31st May will be too late, as I will be sorting out the leagues on Saturday 1st June and therefore need finalised numbers by then.

I look forward to getting at least 2 divisions up and running this time but, if you are not serious about your commitment to playing all matches without the need for being reminded, please do not enter.

Leagues (including expansion leagues) / Freshers' Week
« on: November 24, 2018, 03:13:09 AM »
We now have our 3 divisions confirmed for the Carcassonne Central Divisional Winter League 2018 as shown on my attachment.

This does not, however, mean that the tournament can start, as there are still a few things left for me to set up.

From now until midnight on Friday 30th November we have Freshers' Week, where I am inviting you all to participate in ensuring that everything is up and running well, and that everyone understands the rules and the tactics of the league point scoring system.

Please use this thread, Private messages or the Slack chat room to arrange pre-season friendly games against opponents in any division where you can try out the scoring system, in many cases for the first time.

I would like to ensure that the following criteria are met as much as possible before we start:-

Everyone has a working JCloisterZone that they are able to use.

We have tested out the public server and are happy that it is working properly.

We have reported all crashes (if any) to Farin.

As many as possible who are playing are able to use their own computer as a game server

Everyone gets accustomed to the league point scoring system (below)

Everyone knows how to make a screen shot with the required information and post it to the appropriate thread

League Points

As a result of playing league matches, players gain league points according to the following table:-

Most game points for roads – 1 point
Most game points for cities – 1 point
Most game points for cloisters – 1 point
Most game points for farms – 1 point
Most game points overall (formerly referred to as 'a win') – 1 point
Tying any of the above with opponent – 0.5 points

This means that all matches have 5 points available to be distributed to the two players.

I now invite you all to organise your friendly matches, especially with players in other divisions to your own, and get posting your results to this thread.

In the meantime, I will be constructing the 3 'official' threads that we will be using for the Winter 2018 tournament - one for the Premiership, one for the Championship and one for league 'A'

Please note that pre-season friendly are completely optional, but advisable in many ways. It will also allow us to iron out any problems before the season starts.

11
As promised in my previous post last week http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=4110.0, we are putting together a league which is suitable for all Carcassonne players, whether 'Grand master' or 'Beginner' and everything in between, and this is the official notification that it is to begin on Saturday 1st December 2018.

How does it work?

The league will comprise a set of seeded 'divisions' where each division will contain players who are about equivalent in standard. This should benefit all parts of the ability spectrum. Every 3 months, a new season will be run, and the top two from each division will be promoted, and the bottom two will be demoted. Every division will contain 6 players, so 2 players will therefore remain in the same division for another season.

The league is different from all our previous tournaments in that the objective is not necessarily to win individual games, but to accumulate 'league points'.

League points are gained as follows:-

1 points for a win
0.5 points for a draw
0 points for losing
1 point for winning the most road points (0.5 if a tie)
1 point for winning the most city points (0.5 for a tie)
1 point for winning the most cloister points (ditto)
1 point for winning the most farming points (ditto)

The other difference in this tournament is that each player 'adopts' their own expansion, which they will play in all 5 games in that division. Any bonus points from these expansions (such as trade goods) will not generate league points, but will assist in winning games. This means that an individual can gain more league points by having the majority of city points, road points and farming points, despite losing the individual game.

If you would like to join in the tournament, please 'sign up' by responding to this post before midnight on Friday 23rd November. This will allow us time to sort out the starting leagues for participants and to publish the full set of rules.

Assuming that all goes as expected, there will be 4 seasonal leagues per year, starting with Winter 2018 (December - February), then Spring 2019 (March - May) etc. I am hoping that we will be able to start off with at least 4 divisions (if not, more).

All games will be played on JCloisterZone which, for those who do not yet know, is completely free and runs on Linux, Mac, and even Windows.

We hope that, even if you have only just started playing Carcassonne, you will want to use this as a way of learning to play and meeting other players of a similar ability.

Please get signing up by responding to this post.

Leagues (including expansion leagues) / The Carcassonne Divisional League
« on: October 31, 2018, 11:33:58 AM »
I'm sorry if this has been a long time coming, but it is said that good things always come to those who wait.

I am pleased to be able to announce that, after what seems like a long time, but is, in fact, only a year, Carcassonne Central is to host a new on-line tournament to which all players, at any level, are invited.

The 'ANY LEVEL' part is the important bit here because I, as a relative newcomer remember clearly taking on some of our top players after having learnt how to play only a few weeks previously, and not enjoying the experience too much, as I was obviously outclassed and unable to give my opponent a proper game. This tournament is different. It is BIGLY different.

Firstly, we are going to have a divisional system where the top players will be in the 'Premiership' and us mere mortals will be in leagues below that trying to get promoted and avoiding relegation to the league below. Each league will consist of 6 players and each tournament will last 2 1/2 months, 4 times a year, starting with 'Winter league 2018' on 1st December until 14th February 2019. After each 'season', the top two players in each league will be promoted to the league above, and the two bottom players will be relegated to the league below. Obviously promotion will not apply to the premiership league, and relegation will not apply to the lowest league. In this way, and in time, all players will be playing others at the same level of ability as themselves and will find Carcassonne a much more enjoyable experience than playing to lose against the top players.

Secondly, and equally important, each match will be different and use different expansions. All players at the start of a season will select an expansion that they will use for each of their games. This way, every match consists of the base game and two expansions which will be a unique combination for that match only. This means that all players will get to try out their hand at 5 expansions every season, plus their own selection.

Thirdly, there will be no fixed dates for fixtures to take place. Players will arrange matches with their opponents either on this forum, or in one of the chat rooms. All you have to do is play 5 matches in a 10 week period. This should not be too onerous, even for those of you who are fortunate enough to take holidays.

Fourthly, there will be league points available not just for winning games, but for winning different parts of games. This will mean that Players will be able to win convincingly, easily, barely or lose equally convincingly, easily or barely, and there will also be draws. The points for each match will be awarded as follows:-

3 points for a win
1.5 points for a draw
0 points for losing
1 point for winning the most road points (0.5 if a tie)
1 point for winning the most city points (0.5 for a tie)
1 point for winning the most cloister points (ditto)
1 point for winning the most farming points (ditto)

For example, Dan and I have a match and Dan wins. I, however, beat him on roads and cities, but he outclasses me by getting an enormous farm score. We also manage to complete 2 cloister each and get the same amount of points. This means that Dan gets 3 for the win, 1 for the farming win and 0.5 for tying the cloister. I get 1 point for winning the roads and another for beating him on the cities and I also get a half for tying the cloisters. This means that Dan wins 4.5 to 2.5 points. He feels good for winning. I feel good for getting more points against Dan than Halfling!  :))

Lastly, (for now at least), we will be having competitions for who wins the most road points in a season, the most city points etc. So, even though you lose every match, you still might be crowned the King Monk!!

I am currently trying out the format for the league and the matches themselves with a selected group of friends on here that I have known for some time. Our aim is to iron out any bugs and problems before we start the season for real.

We are going to be open for signing up to join on a post in the near future (about a week) so that we can start 'for real' on December 1st. We will be 'seeding' players as accurately as we possibly can once we know who has signed up to play.

More to follow shortly ........

« on: February 14, 2018, 05:29:15 AM »
Mr Numbers did a random draw for me this morning, and I am proud to announce the fixtures of the 'Alternative' World Cup, which starts today and finished at midnight GMT on the day that the 'real' final is played.

I have broken the fixtures into three group, according to the set of expansions being used. These are:-

27   Rosco    v TheSteveAllen   322 - 329

28   Chooselife   v Hounk

Each competitor can play up to 7 matches, as given above, but must play at least 3 matches to qualify and be included in the championship table. In addition, each player must play each set of configurations (QF, SF and Final). Games can be played in any order. As usual, there is no Home or Away player, so use a random starter.

Once the first player has met these requirements, I will be making a 'league table' of all those that have so far qualified, which will be kept up to date on this thread.

The table will be according to score difference, and not according to wins (as other leagues). This should mean that the first place is up for grabs right until the very end of the tournament.

In addition to point difference, there will be a 30 point bonus for winning a match, or 30 points each in the event of a draw.

Please post the results of your games along with the game number (as given above) on this thread so that I can keep a tally at my end, and update the table.

This competition is designed to have all matches completed by the end but, given the lengths of the games, I realise that this is impossible to achieve. I only ask, therefore, that despite having a real life too, you all try to play as many of your 7 fixtures as possible.

Any questions? Please post on this thread.

Good luck to all and a big 'Thanks' for entering!

The configurations for the games are copied here:-

QF:
Traders and Builders + Abbey and Mayor + The Corn Circles + The Count of Carcassonne + GQ11 + The Phantom = 123 tiles (starting tile and 2 tiles from GQ11 are excluded).
GQ11 option "The Pig herd is present on the farm tile" is ON.

SF:
Inns and Cathedrals + The Tower + The Festival + The Goldmines + The German Monasteries + Mage and Witch = 134 tiles (cloisters from the base game have to be removed).

Final:
Traders and Builders + The Princess and The Dragon + Bridges, Castles and Bazaars + The River II + The Besiegers + The Flier + The Phantom = 163 tiles (starting tile is excluded).

It might also be a good idea if a group of volunteers of people like myself, assist Farin by helping him to playtest his program. A series of ‘dummy games’ for people who understand the interactions of the various expansions with people reporting problems encountered to Farin might be worth consideration. I, for one, would be more than willing to help, if I can find an equally willing partner.
