Title: Nominations - Top 10 non-Carcassonne games
Post by: Decar on April 16, 2017, 07:34:25 AM
Calling all Carcassonne fans!

I think it would be helpful for new gamers, who love Carcassonne, but looking for other great games to broaden their horizons.
Plus, I thought it might be fun to start a poll of our favourite (non-Carcassonne) games.

But first, nominate as many games as you like, then I'll start a poll:

Here's mine, in no particular order:

Stone Age
Isle of Skye
Agricola: All Creatures Great and Small
Finca
Cinque Terre

Some great nominations everyone!  Thanks for taking part.  I can't believe we've got 98 individual games already!

It's quite incredible, and it's also interesting to see the diversity of games that Carcassonne fans love.

I've updated the nominations at the top of the thread, feel free to give it a read and nominate anything you think is missing!

Here are mine additional nominates:
Power Grid (any map and/or expansion)
Ticket to Ride (any map and/or expansion). I understand you've listed three maps of TTR as separate games, but I'm a lumper as opposed to splitter. It's just a personal taste, but may I overwhelm the list with every map and expansion I know of >:D?
Bang! (any expansion, but no spin-offs)
Saboteur with the expansion. Geologist is my favourite role in the game, and I happen to a geologist in my real life. Well, not really a traditional geologist, but close enough.
6 nimmt!
No Thanks
Coup with the expansion

Great idea for a poll/ series of polls Decar! +1 merit from me... :(y)

There are only a couple of games that I enjoy which aren't already on the list. But I do have a couple to add:

- Dice City
- Flip City
- Glüx
- Monopoly Deal (a card game version of Monopoly which is much more fun and takes a fraction of the time)
- Quadropolis (playing this a lot at the moment)
- Tsuro (the classic version - I prefer this to the "of the seas" version despite obvious similarities)
- Zombies!!! (100+ games and no zombies? what's the matter with you people?)
- Zombie Fluxx

Looking forward to seeing how the voting works out!

In my opinion, the difference among various maps of Ticket to Ride (TTR) is comparable to that among Carcassonne expansions, so it doesn't hurt to bundle the TTR games with maps, just not The Card Game. Think about Puerto Rico (the board game) and San Juan (the card game).

Except I severely dislike Puerto Rico but like San Juan quite a bit. Despite similar mechanics, they are completely different games in my mind. Ticket to Ride games are certainly more similar to each other, but I never play (and don't own) the Ticket to Ride base game. I consider Europe and Nordic Countries to be the core game and if I saw just Ticket to Ride on a list, I would not vote for it, but I would almost certainly vote for Europe or Nordic Countries. So there is a difference.

Pretty much the same here. One big issue of Puerto Rico is that it's too difficult to see the words on the buildings and other player's islands.

(an awesome real-time dice roller)...

What makes a dice roller a "real-time" dice roller?  Just curious.

My understanding is that it's a game where everyone is playing at once and there is no turn-taking so to speak. All players are simply rolling (or re-rolling), moving, rolling and so on. They're quite chaotic with a lot of shouting going on, and there's usually a time limit to keep the pressure on!

Don't look now, but everyone else forgot to add Escape: Curse of the Temple (an awesome real-time dice roller)...

I'm still waiting for Escape: Zombie City to arrive, which I backed on KickStarter and which was available to buy there and then in Essen 6 months ago.

Tricky, as I now also play and love games with at first very intimidating rulesets like Brass or Robinson Crusoe, which I would rather not put on the list. But games, I think still are missing among the nominations, are:

51st State Master Set (or Imperial Settlers)
Exit: The Game series (have not played any other of the Escape Room games)
Firenze
Jaipur
Legends of Andor
Kolejka
Saint Petersburg
(although it is now uglinized: Doris Matthäus artwork had been replaced with one by Anne Pätzke)
Thurn & Taxis (for me the "better Ticket to Ride")
The Voyages of Marco Polo

Well I make that 156 entries - that's quite impressive!  I wasn't expecting anywhere near as many contenders for a top-10 list!

I think the next job will be to batch these into groups of 20 (I'll probably do this randomly) and create individual polls.  The top 2 or 3 votes in each poll will go to the next round.

Just to be clear, I'm not intending to rank all 156 games; just find the 10 most popular, so I think this mechanism will be ok.

There's still time to nominate before I create the first poll (probably tomorrow)!

Thanks to everyone for taking part!

Fab idea this Decar, it'll no doubt spur me on to discover loads more new games. It's a rather lengthy list, but there are some games that we currently enjoy which aren't listed. These are...
Star Realms
Diamonds
The Game of 49
King of Tokyo (although King of New York is listed)
Rummikub
Hive
Perudo

It's our most frequently played app at the moment (closely followed by Onirim). In fact, I've just bought Hero Realms with the character packs because of it. Only played once so far, but it'll be hitting the table in several hours shortly after breakfast!

Might have to start bundling Ticket to Ride and it's expansions.  I'm not enough of an expert of TTR to separate: expansions/variants/different games though.

We have a bunch of the ticket to rides.  The problem is there are 3 base games (USA, Europe, and Nordic).  The Nordic has bizarre colors that don't work as well with the other expansions.  Because of that and the bigger cards, TTR Europe is the best base game.  That being said, we never play it.  The expansion maps are so much better, there is no reason to.  Our favorites are Pennyslvania and India.
Title: Re: Nominations - Top 10 non-Carcassonne games
Post by: Decar on April 23, 2017, 10:01:09 AM
I've made some executive decisions:

Given the diversity of TTR games, I've grouped the three nominations for basegame/Europe/Nordic Countries into a single grouping.  If you want to cast a vote for any of these games, consider if your favourite one.  I think this is reasonable as fans of the games can unite to see it go further in the voting.  Imagine a split vote of Carcassonne spin-offs  :o

For similar reasons I've also batched:  King of Tokyo & King of New York and Also Tsuro and (Tsuro of the Sea).

I see these games as similar enough to warrant combining fan-bases.  Again imagine the Dominion fan-base being split over individual expansions for example.

I am considering combining colouretto and zooloretto for the same reasons.  I do not know the games well enough to determine how similar they are.

Did I miss any other games franchises that could be merged?

I've now opened the first poll:
Top 10 - Poll #1 - open until 30th April (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=3273.0)

Nominations are now closed.

My apologies for the delay getting Wednesday's post out - I've had an utterly terrible week of work.

I hope to find some more time this evening to get this week's out before Sunday's ends.

If it wasn't for work I'd play so much more Carcassonne.

I'd own far less expansions though....

If it wasn't for work I'd get the ones I have designed, or downloaded, printed and ready for playing with!

I'll add four of my favorites that aren't on the list yet:

Agricola
Battle Line
Clank!
Sushi Go! Party

Those who know Battle Line will be aware that the artwork is quite poor. Roland's Revenge Games is taking pre-orders for a new version with beautiful and rethemed medieval artwork. There are only 400 copies being made (after 100 copies were made in the first run) and over 230 of them are gone. Roland plans to sell 300 of the 400 by pre-order and the final 100 at Essen.

I just ordered a copy. If you're interested, you check it out here (http://rolandsrevenge.com/battle-line-2nd-edition/) or on the BGG forums here (https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/1714584/battle-line-new-medieval-edition).

I've been banging on about this on Twitter since Rich The Fish sent me a mail about it.  It really does look amazing!  I like the change to include locations too.  The GMT edition is quite expensive, so this luxury edition is really good value.

Do you mind sharing how much it costs? I couldn't see a price on the website and I didn't want to get too far into the form before realising that it's more than I can afford!

€20, + ~€6 for shipping. I was also scared that it would be a lot more than that, but that seems very reasonable.

(P.S. The domain battlelinecentral.com is available. It sounds like we might need it!)

I think the guy lives in Utrecht, a city nearby, so in the comment field of the form I asked if I could pick it up there. Lets see if it's possible.

For anyone who may be on the fence, pre-orders for the medieval rethemed version of Battle Line (http://rolandsrevenge.com/battle-line-2nd-edition/) close this week.
